The Packard Motor Car Company comes to life again in America’s Packard Museum. The museum was founded in 1992 by Dayton attorney and long-time car collector Bob Signom. Located in the original Packard Dealership Building which was built in 1917, the museum has officially taken the name of the original dealership – The Citizens Motorcar Company – but has become known as “America’s Packard Museum”. The January 1998 edition of Car Collector magazine named the museum one of the “Top Ten” Museums in The United States. In 2004, the Society of Automotive Historians conferred the prestigious James J. Bradley Award upon the Museum for its exemplary efforts in preserving motor vehicle resource materials. Only six other U.S. museums have received the Bradley Award.

Signom brought The Citizens Motorcar Company “back to life,” as the only restored Packard dealership operating as a museum. The museum features over 50 automobiles on display in the restored Art Deco showroom, service department and pavillion. In addition, significant artifacts from the Packard Motorcar Company are on display. The museum has become a popular destination for travelers and residents alike. In 1993 the museum was acknowledged by the Montgomery County Historical Society with its Annual Award for restoration of a commercial building. The museum’s neighborhood has been named Dayton’s Motorcar District.

In 1993 Packard Automobile Classics (The Packard Club) relocated its headquarters from Oakland, California to the Dayton museum. In June, 1996, the Wright Brothers Region of PAC, in Dayton, hosted the Packard National Meet, with multiple events at the Museum, which attracted more than 400 Packard enthusiasts from across the US, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, and the UK. The PAC office is today located in Columbus, Ohio. America’s Packard Museum is an Affiliate Organization of The Packard Club.

A Section 501 (c)(3) organization under the Internal Revenue Code whose mission is to educate present and future generations about the Packard Motor Car Company, it’s products and philosophies.

This was the view from my room at college at URI back in 1969. We were eight guys in two rooms over a garage just off campus. The landlord restored Packards in the garage below and his father-in-law, who was a mathematics professor, raised pigeons in the barn next door.

When we were checking out of the hotel, we ran into OG ABEL who was staying there too. We walked over to the show together and we hung out at the House of Kolor booth while he did a demo.

Hi Leute,

Wieder einmal einen schlechten Fall über den HP Support (darf man das so noch nennen) in Deutschland.

Situation:

Ich habe im März/April 2009 von meinem Cousin aus den USA ein Notebook bekommen (HP Pavillon dv4z-1000).

Soweit so gut, das Notebook hat seine Arbeit super verrichtet, war schön leicht, daher also auch gut tragbar, eigentlich ein perfektes Gerät für mich (Abiturient, das heißt auch für Vorträge in der Schule mobil).

Bis vor ein paar Wochen. Es geht genau gesagt um die Woche vom 4.10. – 11.10. In der Woche fiel mir auf, dass mein Notebook beim Spielen anfing zu ruckeln, sobald Ich in die Bereiche kam, in denen viel Rechenarbeit erforderlich war. Es war paradox und lustig zu gleich. Beim Spiel “Burnout Paradise” sank die FPS-Anzahl passend zur steigenden Geschwindigkeit. Bei hohen Geschwindigkeiten war Ich gezwungen, die Handbremse solang gedrückt zu halten, bis das Auto still stand. Erst dann reagierte das Spiel wieder.

Nach ein bisschen Recherche stellte sich heraus, dass ja eventuell die Kühlung problematisch sein könnte. Also soweit, wie möglich gereinigt und siehe da, die Ruckler waren weg. Doch daraus habe Ich gelernt und erstmal die Temperaturen beobachtet, die teilweise die 90°C Marke ankratzten, was mir Sorgen bereitete. Im Idle, sprich im Leerlauf, schwankte die Temperatur zwischen 45°C und 55°C.

Doch nun fiel mir auf, dass Ich bevor Ich die Lüfter gereinigt habe, das Energieprofil auf “Ausbalanciert” gestellt habe. Und dann passierte das Unmögliche: Nach dem Ich die Option auf das Profil Höchstleistung (Akku war die ganze Zeit draußen, Laptop hing nur am Netzteil) gestellt habe, schoss die Idle Temperatur auf 60°C hoch. Und was mich dann letztendlich schockte: Beim Spielen ging der Laptop einfach aus. Ich hab dann sofort hinten am Lüfter gefühlt und es war heiß. So, jetzt war es mir genug. Unter dem Laptop stand sogar so ein Kühlerpad (Revoltec RNC-21000):

Naja, es hielt lediglich die HDD Temperatur einigermaßen kühl, was auch ein Fortschritt war.

Egal, weiter mit der Reise . Ich hab direkt bei HP angerufen und dem Techniker (der extrem verunsichert war und kaum wusste, wie er reagieren sollte) mein Problem geschildet. Er war kurz weg (natürlich angekündigt), um sich mit einem Kollegen zu beraten. Ihr Ergebnis: Der Akku könnte Probleme machen. Aber als Ich dann sagte, dass der Laptop ohne Akku läuft, wusste er gar nicht mehr weiter und ließ einen Abholauftrag erstellen.

Mich freute das erstmal. Ernsthaft. Denn mein Laptop war ja ein US-Gerät. Laut HP hätte ich lediglich 12 Monate Garantie ab Herstellung, die dann auch international gelte. Und Ich war gerade im elften Monat (ja, lustige Formulierung). Ok, also Anruf erfolgte am 06.10.. UPS sollte am 08.10. kommen. Ich selber war in der Schule, hatte jedoch jemanden zu Hause, der aber um 12:55 Uhr raus musste. Um 12:57 Uhr kam UPS und traf niemanden mehr daheim an. Egal, aufjedenfall wurde das Gerät dann am Tag danach abgeholt. Da danach erstmal Wochenende war (bei UPS die Chill-Zeit), kam das Paket erst am Montag an.

Dann der erste Schock. Der Laptop geht zu Teleplan (!!!!!!!!). Die Werkstatt, die für ihre Inkompetenz ja wirklich bekannt ist. Nach ein bisschen Recherche kam Ich sogar hierzu:

Es kommt ja drauf an. HP scheint mittlerweile 2 Werkstätten zu haben.
Zum einen wäre da Quanta(rep nummer TWDEU), zum anderen Teleplan.

Quanta ist Pfeilschnell, aber es kommt trotzdem darauf an, dass dort auch die Ersatzteile lagernd sind. In deinem Fall muss ja das gesamte Mainboard getauscht werden – sowas kann wohl auch bei Quanta 2 Wochen dauern.

Mist, hätte Ich doch am Telefon gesagt, Ich will zu Quanta. Bei mir machte sich schon Angst breit, aber die legte sich schnell. Es war immerhin erst der 12.10. und das Notebook war gerade erst angekommen.

So, eine Woche verging…

Die Woche danach rief Ich bei HP an und erfragte den Reparatur Status. Dort hieß es lapidar: Die Werkstatt hat eine Anfrage gestellt und wartet auf Antwort von HP.

So ging das weiter bis Freitag, als sich eine Mitarbeiterin ein Herz nahm und endlich mal eine Mail an die Werkstatt schickte, was man den wissen will. Ich soll bitte am Dienstag anrufen. Also zum Überblick: Freitag war der 23.10.09!

Ok, Dienstag angerufen und dann der Hammer: Das Gerät hätte einen Defekt und man braucht Einzelteile, aber da es ein US-Gerät ist, fehlt die Einzelteilliste.

Okay, Ich hab mich beruhigt und Google angeworfen. Und irgendwie kam Ich dann zu HP Böblingen.

Deren Telefonnummer ist 07031 / 140. Wenn ihr da anruft, verlangt einfach die Beschwerdestelle.

Okay, da kommt man einfach zu einer Mitarbeiterin und die hatte auch nichts besseres zu tun, als mich abzuwimmeln. Ich soll dankbar sein, dass man immerhin das Gerät angenommen hat. Naja, Ich wieß sie dann freundlich darauf hin, dass ein HP Techniker mich damals darauf hinwies, dass HP international 12 Monate Garantie ab Herstellungsdatum gibt. Und laut Seriennummer ist mein Gerät erst 11 Monate alt. Also Basta, fertig. Da mir das Gespräch zu blöd wurde, beendete Ich es irgendwann.

Die Woche ging so weiter, beim zweiten Anruf in Böblingen wieder das ähnliche. Doch dann kam der Freitag gestern (30.10.09). Ich rief wieder in Böblingen an und verlangte wieder die Beschwerdestelle. Zur Abwechslung ging mal jemand aus dem “Beschwerdemanagement” ran. Die nette Frau nahm sich meinem Fall an und klärte mich endlich mal auf (nicht falsch deuten ). Das Problem sei: Die Werkstatt braucht ein neues Mainboard und eine CPU (scheint irgendwie immer bei Teleplan vorzukommen) und da es ein US-Modell ist, stehen diese Teile nicht im System. Teleplan hat eine Software, über den die Techniker die Ersatzteile bestellen und genau in dieser Liste fehlen die Teile und HP soll diese nachtragen.

Ok, und was jetzt? Die Mitarbeiterin teilte mir mit, dass sie eine Beschwerde aufnahm und dem Fall Priorität gibt (ENDLICH!!). Sie sagte außerdem, dass sie die Werkstatt anruft und diese darum bittet, nachzuschauen, ob die Teile inzwischen eingetragen sind, da HP nach so einem Prozess der Werkstatt normalerweise nicht Bescheid sage und diese könne ja schließlich auch nicht immer nachgucken (Ja, ganz logisch, wie soll es dann vorankommen?). Man werde sich bei mir melden.

Seitdem warte Ich (also seit gestern ).

Update 1 (2.11.09): Habe angerufen. Laut Mitarbeiterin hat man jetzt endlich die Ersatzteile bestellt und wartet darauf. Freuen wir uns wieder auf 3 Wochen -.-

Update 2 (3.11.09): Habe gerade einen Anruf aus Böblingen bekommen. Die Frau vom Beschwerdemanagement. Die Teile seien abgeschickt worden, aber es gäbe ein Lieferengpass. Also fragte Ich nach, wie lang das dauern könnte. Sie schaute nach und musste (erstaunt) feststellen, dass die Teile laut HP bereits verfügbar seien. Naja, jetzt soll Ich warten, da sie bei Teleplan anruft und nachfragt, ob die Teile schon da sind. Dann erhalte Ich nen Rückruf

Update 3 (4.11.09): Erneuter Anruf aus Böblingen. Die CPU ist bereits da, das Mainboard muss noch geliefert werden. Also warten -.-

Update 4(6.11.09): Habe heute nochmal selber bei HP angerufen und erfahren, dass mein Laptop heute per DHL versendet wurde (JAAAA!). Habe auch ne Trackingnummer bekommen, die bisher nichts anzeigt, das liegt aber daran, dass sowas bei DHL immer dauert.

Update 5(6.11.09): So der Status von 23:31: Die Sendung wurde im Zustell-Paketzentrum bearbeitet. Das heißt also, dass das Paket mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit morgen ankommt. Ich kann es kaum abwarten .

Update 6(7.11.09): ES GEHT IN DIE VERLÄNGERUNG!

Ja, ihr habt recht gehört inzw. sind wir bei Update 6 und beim Punkt … 0! RICHTIG

Das Gerät kam heute per Post und Ich bin extrem enttäuscht. Okay, war erstmal froh, dass es nicht zerkratzt war.

Auf dem Reparaturbeleg steht, dass sowohl Mainboard als auch die CPU ausgetauscht wurden.

So, glücklicherweise hatte Ich ja bereits vor der Reparatur eine eigene Festplatte und meinen eigenen RAM in Betrieb, sodass Ich natürlich den RAM und die Original-HDD von HP eingeschickt hab, also musste Ich diese wieder austauschen.

Okay, beim RAM gabs schon Probleme, diese Halterung wurde extrem schlecht eingebaut, RAM rausholen war eine Kunst, aber ging dann doch nach ca. 10 Minuten. Dann kam Ich zur Festplatte und erlebte einen Schock. Dieser Idioten von Teleplan dachten wohl, sie können mich verarschen. Haben einfach die Abdeckung der Festplatte kaputt gemacht und schlecht draufgelegt, in der Hoffnung, Ich würde das nie entdecken. Hier ein Foto (klickt drauf, um es zu vergrößern ):

Hm..okay, Ich wurde schon wütend, hatte aber gerade keine Lust auf Stress also erstmal drüber hinweggesehen, man kann ja einfach anrufen und sowas neu anfordern, kann Ich ja auch später oder am Montag machen.

Also Laptop angemacht, ging ok, Windows startet und installiert plötzlich irgendwelche neue Treiber, Ich bekam schon Angst. Nach einem Neustart starte Ich Everest und erstelle erschrocken fest. DIE CPU WURDE AUSGETAUSCHT -.-.

Man hat einfach meinen AMD Turion X2 RM-70 durch einen AMD Sempron SI-40 ersetzt. Dieser neue Schrott hat nichtmal 2 Cores, was soll der Mist? Gleich dort angerufen und Stress geschoben. “Unsere System sind derzeit leider offline, rufen Sie bitte am Montag an!” Ich war natürlich schon auf 180 und habe einfach gesagt, Ich rufe in Böblingen an. Der Techniker bekam es plötzlich mit der Angst und wollte unbedingt, dass Ich da nicht anrufe. Aber Ich sagte einfach, dass es mir egal ist, Inkompetenz muss bestraft werden. An HP USA werde Ich mich auch mal wenden, mal sehen, was die sagen, wenn sie hören, was ihre Kinder da im Ausland treiben. So, jetzt warte Ich erstmal bis Montag und bin hochwütend. Habe inzwischen meinen Laptop wieder geöffnet meine Teile mit den Original HP Teilen ersetzt und ihn wieder verpackt. Der geht gleich am Montag weg, keine Lust mehr auf so einen Mist.

Update 7(7.11.09): Hier zumindest schonmal des Rätsels Lösung. Die Inkompetenz liegt mal wieder bei HP. Habe mal im Online Ersatzteilstore meine Seriennumer eingegeben und siehe da:

Update 8(8.11.09): Okay, mir ist noch was eingefallen. Wenn Ich Treiber benötigt habe, musste Ich immer die für das Laptop dv4z-1100 runterladen, weil irgendwie meine Teile nur bei dem gelistet waren! Dann hab Ich mir mal gedacht Ich such nach Ersatzteilen für das Gerät und siehe da:

Update 9(9.11.09): Wieder mit HP telefoniert. Das Notebook wird morgen wieder abgeholt, diesesmal steht im Reperaturauftrag explizit Turion X2. Das exakte Modell fehlt, das soll Ich nachtragen (:D). Mal sehen, wie lange das jetzt dauert.

Update 10(10.11.9): UPS war heute morgen um 10 Uhr da und hat den Laptop mit eigener Verpackung mitgenommen. Tracking ID funktioniert jetzt schon, das Paket ist unterwegs (Unterwegs, Zustelldatum: 11.11.2009) . Mal sehen, wie lange Teleplan (geht leider wieder dahin -.-) jetzt braucht, werde am Freitag da anrufen und fragen!

Update 11(11.11.09): Das Gerät ist laut UPS bei Teleplan angekommen. Auf ein neues Spiel -.-

Update 12(13.11.09): Habe heute bei HP angerufen und die Nachricht bekommen, dass mein Laptop rausgeht . Habe auch ne Tracking ID bekommen, aber natürlich funktioniert diese noch nicht. Was mich wundert ist eher, dass es so schnell ging, Ich habe eher Angst, dass die CPU einfach so belassen wurde -.-. Hoffen wir einfach das Beste.

Update 13(13.11.09, 22:00 Uhr): DHL Tracking sagt: “Elektronische Sendungsdaten liegen vor”. Ich befürchte, dass dieses verdammte Paket morgen nicht ankommt und dann ist Sonntag -.- :/.

Update 14(14.11.09): Das Paket kam doch heute . Der DHL Mann stand um 11 Uhr da und gab mir das Paket. Die CPU wurde laut Reparaturbericht ausgetauscht und ist jetzt wieder mein Turion X2 RM-70. Die Festplattenabeckung wurde einfach per Klebeband befestigt, aber scheiß drauf, keine Lust mehr auf den Aufwand. Die Story ist für mich zu Ende. HP ist für mich gestorben!

Update 15(22.11.09): Wir gehen in die zweite Verlängerung: Es hat sich einiges getan. Habe am Montag (16.11) gemerkt, dass mein HDMI Anschluss nicht mehr funktioniert -.-. Das Wärmeproblem ist natürlich auch noch da. Also gleich bei HP angerufen, die erstmal behauptet haben, Ich wäre schuld, besser gesagt, mein “überladenes Windows”. Der Typ behauptete natürlich gleich, Ich hätte sowas wie Messenger im Autorun, also wurds mir zu blöd und Ich beendete das Gespräch. Am Mittwoch (18.11) nochmal angerufen und eine Abholung veranlasst. Jetzt am Freitag (20.11) war UPS da und hat das Gerät mitgenommen. Morgen kommt es mal wieder bei Teleplan an. Selbst der UPS Mann hat sich schon gefragt, was das denn ist, denn er hat meinen Laptop die Woche davor auch abgeholt . Hoffentlich versagt HP bzw. Teleplan mal endlich wieder. Nach der dritten Reparatur habe Ich nämlich mein Recht auf Wandlung . Mal abwarten…

Update 16(23.11.09): Das Gerät kam heute morgen um 8:42 Uhr in Weiterstadt bei Teleplan an. Mal sehen, wie lange es diesesmal dauert…

Update 17(1.12.09): Ich habe einfach keine Lust gehabt, andauernd Updates zu machen, aber hier der neue Stand. Also nach ca. 6 Telefonaten mit HP in Böblingen wurde der Fall am Freitag, dem 27.11., vom Beschwerdemanagment weiter nach oben gestellt, und plötzlich wurde das Ersatzteil auf Express bestellt, was gefehlt hat (stand mal wieder nicht in der Liste). Okay also gestern, am Montag, dem 30.11., angerufen und dann der Hammer: “Ihr Gerät ist fertig, aber wir haben derzeit keine Recovery DVD lieferbar, installieren Sie es dann einfach selber?” Ich dachte mir nur: “HALLO? Dritte Reparatur, bisher war nie Recovery lieferbar, jedesmal hab Ich selber gesagt, dass Ich keine brauche”. Okay, gut, dann ist das Gerät fertig und geht in Versand. Heute wurde es versandt und Ich habe eine DHL Tracking ID bekommen, die auch funktioniert. Morgen kommt das Gerät, mal sehen, ob es auf ein Neugerät hinausläuft (Wandlung nach der 3. Reparatur). Update kommt natürlich auch .

Recently, Jason Linkins featured an article by Thomas Morton that ridiculed the standard Decadent Detroit journalist’s tour that always includes a photograph of the closed Packard plant on East Grand Boulevard. The deluxe, VIP version of the standard tourist itinerary is the one followed by Ralph Nader and Ross Perot, the one that includes a few private conversations with “real natives” that leave them experts on the state of the automotive industry.

Stale as it gets, the Packard plant does, in fact, symbolize everything that was once good about the automotive industry and much that’s bad about the city.

The building, designed in 1905 by Alfred Kahn, was the first to use reinforced concrete. His early factories were several floors high, and strong enough to support the weight of vehicle production and assembly. After the perfection of distributed electric systems, Kahn built the first modern glass and concrete, one-story plant for Dodge in Warren in 1937.

He innovated in materials, construction techniques, and design. More important, Kahn didn’t retire after making one contribution or simply cash in on his contacts with commissions for private estates, but continued to experiment with industrial architecture. However desolate, his Packard plant still stands after more than a hundred years, and until recently, it could have been renovated.

Although Packard Motor Car Company, then part of Studebaker, closed in 1956, the final destruction of the building is recent. In 1960, the compound was converted into an industrial park that degenerated into a half-vacant warren of small businesses, while the neighborhood, near an interstate, became increasingly more dangerous. Young people used it for raves and paint ball fights.

In the late 1990’s, the state held title to much of the adjoining property from unpaid taxes. In 1997, Detroit’s mayor, Dennis Archer, or his cronies, thought they saw an opportunity to convert the land into an Empowerment Zone with tax breaks, and began foreclosure proceedings for the million plus dollars owed the city in back taxes.

The next year, the state’s Department of Community Health was asked to evaluate the hazards at the 35-acre brown field. It determined the worst problems were asbestos, lead paint, bird droppings, tires and bales of plastic waste, costly to remediate, but not serious.

While the unnamed owners were fighting for title in court, the city evicted the tenants of Motor City Industrial Park, erected a protective fence, and posted guards.

Two years ago, the state supreme court ruled the owners had paid just enough of their taxes to retain ownership. The sitting mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, removed the city’s guards, and vandals moved in with welding torches to strip out steel beams. The fire department is called several times a month, but now limits its efforts to protecting the area, because the buildings have become too dangerous.

The names of the new owners aren’t published, but are known to include Romel Casab, a bottom feeding land speculator, and are suspected to include Dominic Cristini, a convicted drug dealer. When the netherworld moves in, a site is doomed. In the years when Archer was mayor, my hometown was discovering one of its abandoned industrial sites had been systematically used for illegal chemical dumping and qualified as a superfund site.

The stand-off between rivals with different visions for creating personal wealth that negate each other and result in nothing is one enduring city trait the Packard Plant symbolizes. After 50 years, no one has even been able to tear it down as a public health nuisance, not even when Detroit was using urban development funds after the riots to reduce most of the city’s landscape to barren rubble.

However, the magazine story that prompted Morton’s outrage hasn’t been without its benefits. Earlier this month, Senate majority leader Harry Reid used it to justify giving four states special consideration in the evolving health care bill. He said “The cover of Time magazine shows a dilapidated city, dilapidated streets, the debris covering the road and windows knocked out of abandoned buildings. It looks like a ghost town” and then made sure his home state of Nevada was the one that got the Medicaid break.

My grandpa used to own a 1931 Model A 4 door. It was the Crown Victoria trimmed model and he used it regularly in parades in Stillwater, MN. It still had the original rubber on it. That’s the first car I ever drove and every now and then, I see an old car and get nostalgic. I’ve been VERY nostalgic lately in general. Maybe that’s a birthday thing… anyways, here’s a couple of cars from roughly that era that would have blown my first driving experience out of the water.

I was pondering today’s pen choice when it struck me that I have been very limited in my selections of late. Sheaffers, Parkers, sine ad nauseam, with only occasional Watermans (Watermen? Water-many?) for relish. For the rest of this week I’m going to see about getting some of my less used pens of less known marques.

Today’s pen is a splendid example of the “third tier” pen, although that might be thought of as elevating it by some number of tiers. On my site, I’ve got a few mentions of the soft spot I contain for this sort of pen, although you’d hardly know it for their near-invisibility. They were as close to a disposable pen as the pre-post-war mind could conceive, yet they had to at least be able to withstand at least grazing comparison with the major makers of the day– Sheaffer had Wasp and Parker its Parkette to show a presence in the low end of the market, so if you were making a cheap pen you had to compete with something that had at least seen the inside of a proper pen factory.

So, here I sit, sixty… seventy?… eighty?… years later, with a still-functional and as far as I can make out all original-parts example of the thing peering out of my pocket at the monitor I’m composing this drivel on. That’s pretty good for notionally-disposable goods. Yes, the point is not particularly smooth, the feed is given to dribbling, and the plating is a mess, but it’s still in there slugging. Go buy a modern cheap pen, not a Bic but a Bic knockoff, use it intermittently for the next six decades, and see how well it’s doing at the end of that time.

The world is better now, I guess. Many reliable vaccines, refrigerators reliant on neither CFCs nor the ammonia they had replaced, easy communication (versus “Three Days to South America!” as the Zeppelin Line once bragged), and an end to lining the kids up on the sidewalk for a nice DDT hose-down. Seriously– take a look at this:


But we’ve paid a price for the improvements, and I sometimes wonder if that price doesn’t bring the balance back to where it lay in the era of rampant polio and endemic craftsmanship.

There’s a cheery thought. That’s the problem with these stream of consciousness entries– you never know where they’ll take you. To end on an upbeat note, then, I’ll say what I started out meaning to say– don’t turn up your nose at an old pen just because you don’t recognize the name. “Crappy” is not an absolute value, after all, but a relative and subjective one.
