It is said that moving house is more stressful than divorce, but relocating doesn’t need be a nightmare. The trick is in the planning… the more you plan ahead, the easier your move will be. Here are some helpful hints:

First Things First

* Make a packing priority list
* Take photos of all valuable belongings and record the serial numbers of all your electronic equipment
* Check that your contents insurance will cover damage to your belongings during a move
* There is no better opportunity to go through your personal belongings and have a clean out. Perhaps setting things aside to give to charity or sell either online or at a garage sale
* Hire a ute and make a trip to the tip with any rubbish you’ve sorted
* Consider what size moving truck or van you will need for your furniture and whether you will need one with a hydraulic tail lift or ramp.
* Book your moving truck along with any moving accessories you may require, such as blankets, ropes or moving trolleys
* Notify your electricity and gas companies that you are moving
* Arrange for disconnection and reconnection of telephone, Internet and TV services
* Arrange to have your mail re-directed at the post office
* Keep a list of incoming mail and start notifying organisations of your change of address. Australia Post will contact most major companies on your behalf
* If you are moving interstate or a long distance plan your whole journey ahead. Book accommodation before you set out and ensure that the hotel can accommodate your moving truck
* Depending on the size of your truck and length of your journey, you may need to get a log book. These are available from most newsagents
* If you have young children or pets, organise care for them during moving day
* Arrange for a cleaning service to take care of cleaning your old house, if you’ve decided not to do it yourself
* Eat all the spare food in your freezer and pantry.

Tools Of The Trade

You’ll need to stock up on these items before you begin:

* Strong Boxes in various sizes. Freebies can be obtained from major warehouse/building stores.
* Wardrobe boxes
* Packing tape
* Scissors and box cutters
* Bubble wrap or wrapping paper
* Moving blankets
* Zip lock bags
* Zip ties
* Permanent markers
* Labels
* Good music to keep you motivated as you pack!

Bag It, Wrap It, Pack It

* Packing often takes a lot longer than we anticipate, start early to avoid a stressful lead-up to moving day
* Use good quality, strong boxes in a variety of sizes to suit different items. Make sure they are properly secured at the bottom
* Pack the items you don’t need on a day to day basis first
* Be systematic, pack one room at a time and clearly label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in
* Pack heavy items in smaller boxes to ensure that the boxes aren’t too heavy to carry. Keep the weight of packed boxes minimal to help avoid back injuries
* Use bubble wrap or wrapping paper to wrap any fragile items
* Use moving blankets to wrap and cushion breakable items
* When packing, place the heavier items at the bottom of the box and the lighter items at the top
* Use zip ties or tape to secure rolled up power leads and cords for electrical equipment. Clearly label each cord with its respective appliance or intended use
* Use heavy duty garbage bags to pack items like towels or linen
* Use Ziploc bags for small bits and pieces that usually clutter your drawers
* Pack important items and documents such as certificates, passports or jewelery separately so you can keep them with you on the day
* Roll up your carpets and rugs and secure with rope or tape
* Pack an overnight bag for everyone including a change of clothes, towels and toiletries
* Pack a box of the essentials you’ll need for the first hours in your new home – include tea or coffee, kettle, mugs and teaspoons, water bottle, snacks, milk, small first aid kit, toilet paper, a torch, spare light bulbs, paper towels and cleaning materials. Also include unpacking tools suck as scissors, box cutters and heavy duty garbage bags.

The Heavy Stuff

* When you dismantle your bed, bind the frames together with tape or rope
* Remove the legs of tables where ever possible to allow for easier packing into your moving truck, put any screws or allen keys in a zip lock bag and tape it to one of the legs
* It a good idea to use a trolley to shift items like heavy whitegoods. If you have stairs, make it a sturdy stair trolley.

Packing Your Truck

* The key to a well packed moving truck is keeping furniture and boxes tightly packed in together. Think of it as a jigsaw puzzle; aim to keep empty spaces between items to a minimum. This will help prevent your belongings from moving and potentially being damaged
* Start packing the truck from the front and stack things up to the top before you move towards the back
* Make sure all your belongings are secured, don’t balance anything
* If you will be stopping somewhere overnight make sure you have a padlock to secure the truck.

In The New Place

* Avoid ending up with a daunting pile of packed boxes by delivering them straight to their allocated rooms
* After a long day moving, the last thing you’ll want to do is set up the beds. Unpack beds and bedding first so you wont have to deal it with late at night
* Approach your unpacking in the same way you packed; your essential items first, then systematically unpack one room at a time
* Dispose of packing materials thoughtfully. Recycle where ever possible.

And finally, try to take any mishaps in your stride and remain Zen in the face of adversity. Because no matter how organised you are, something is bound to surprise you along the way!

When the time comes and you need to move, the easiest way to sort out your belongings is to put them

When the time comes and you need to move, the easiest way to sort out your belongings is to put them in boxes. Why do that? Well it beats filling your car with your plants that tip everywhere. The only time I think you may not need to use boxes is if you only had ten items that you are moving.

Okay so you need boxes, you get it. The question you may ask is where to get moving boxes? Well my friend, there is a couple of places that I can tell you of. So sit back and take notice!

Moving Companies Can Help

If you are using a moving company to do your move, they can supply you with the boxes and even help you pack for an extra fee. This way you do not need to worry where they come from, just pack away!

This works the same for international moving companies; however, they must actually pack your belongings by law in case you are a terrorist trying to plant a bomb on a ship, you cannot blame them really.

If you are doing the packing yourself, or are going half way and just using moving companies for their trucks or containers, you can purchase or rent the moving equipment from them or retailers. What I mean by that is, if you are using some of their services then they will be happy to sell you the products they use at a normal price. On the other hand, if you are not using a moving company then the answer as to where to get moving boxes is a retailer.

Buying from a retailer is easy; you can buy the boxes online or at the nearest box supplier. To find an online company just do a web search for moving boxes and a list will appear magically in front of your eyes.

The real tip however, is getting the boxes for free. What? Why keep this from me? I’m not, wait a second, I will tell you where to get moving boxes for free, do not worry!

Free Moving Boxes

If you are looking for the best deal for boxes, then this is it. Everyone works or knows someone that works in a place that uses cardboard boxes. And even if you do not, you know of a supermarket.

These cardboard boxes are 99% of the time wasted, thrown in the bin. If you befriend the staff and just ask for them, it would save you loads of money! So that sure does seem to answer to where to get moving boxes! Of course these boxes won’t be as good looking as the brown square boxes, and may not have the amount of strength, but they will work and they are free after all.

Supermarkets do give away cardboard boxes usually, so long as you ask nicely you could have them. Because the boxes are made for carrying heavy objects such as tin cans, drink bottles, they should be able to carry your belongings. Be sure to not put your clothes in the banana box though, and check for any rips or tears that could ruin your items.

So where to get moving boxes comes down to three main sources:

Your moving company (if applicable),

Online or at a local retailer,

Free at work or a supermarket.

So now all you have to do is go and get them!

Why is packing for a personal trip so hard? For a business trip I can literally pack in twenty minut

Why is packing for a personal trip so hard? For a business trip I can literally pack in twenty minutes, from outfits to toiletries to boarding pass. For most casual trips I agonize for days over what to pack, making list after list, crossing items out, figuring what I still need to buy…For the Alaska cruise I took with my family in the summer of 2008 my packing list was three columns, and took up three pages! Literally. Now, that was not all clothes of course. I had to figure out what I was taking, then I had to figure out all the different outfits these clothes would make. Then I had to decide on accessories and shoes. And of course there was a page devoted to what I was going to take on the plane (seven hour flight!). Now I may be admitting to a little bit of OCD here. In fact, my mother might say this is the only area of my life where I am OCD at all. I am very laid back about most things, but packing for a personal trip is not one of them.

I have a few theories about this. First of all, there are many more situations on a personal trip than on a business trip. For work, I know that I will either be on an airplane, in meetings or trainings, at dinner, or in the hotel the entire time I am gone. I can basically wear the same thing to all of those places. Once I am in the hotel I change into my yoga pants and I am set. The one crazy thing that *might* happen is that I will go down to the pool, so sometimes I bring a swimsuit. For a personal trip though, there could be all kinds of activities. In Vegas, I could go to restaurants, go gambling, go to the pool, go shopping, walk around the Strip, go to a show….the possibilities were endless. In Alaska this was compounded by not completely knowing what kind of weather we would have. Plus, what exactly should one wear while whale watching? (Layers, in case you were wondering.) In Maui, we had the addition of a formal dinner.

I have started getting better at packing lighter, but I still have to make all of those lists. A few weeks ago Home Warrior and I went to Napa for wine tasting, which I followed up with a short trip to Salt Lake City for work. It was definitely tricky combining clothes for a fun trip and a work trip, and still be able to carry on my suitcase. One of my big weaknesses is shoes. I want to bring a different pair for shoes for every outfit. In fact, on my initial Napa list were seven pairs of shoes. For a six day trip. Sigh.

Although I am evolving it all the time, this is basically what I pack for a fun trip. Obviously add or subtract as needed, and vary as necessary for weather, but start with this list and you will be in good shape.

One pair of pants/shorts for every two days (for my 6 day Napa trip I took three pairs of pants), including one pair of jeans

A shirt for every day (ideally each shirt will match more than one pair of pants)

One or two nice tops/outfits

Two pairs of shoes, one pair of flip flops, one pair of tennis shoes**

Jacket appropriate for weather

Clothes for exercising

Clothes for sleeping

Swimsuit and cover-up

Make-up and toiletries

Undergarments

**All of the packing lists I have read say take three pairs of shoes, including the pair on your feet. I think this is a good rule of thumb. I also don’t think flip flops should be included in the shoe count. They are small, don’t take up a lot of room, and are good to have around the hotel regardless of whether you wear them out.

Everyone dreads moving because it never fails that something always gets broken. Try some of these packing tips for a move so you will not have any broken items or knick-knacks. We all have precious things that we cherish like special gifts, ceramics, dishes made of fine china that we want to take with us when we move. However, we do not want these things in pieces when we arrive at a home location. It is possible to prevent these things from becoming broken and useless junk after a move.

Everyone has heard of the bubble wrap this is clear plastic sheeting with different size air bubbles through the entire length and width of the wrap sheet. Use the bubble wrap to wrap any precious items in and then tape the bubble wrap securely with a masking tape. Put the precious items into a large moving box; do not try to pack too many items in the same box let the items simply lay on top of one another. By packing the precious items this way you are not adding weight and pressure to the fragile items and crushing them.

The bubble wrap should be, used on fragile things like porcelain, bisque, China, things easily broken or chipped. Each precious item box should be marked fragile and moved at the very last. You do not want a toolbox on top of your fine china.

The next things you will want to pack up are the dishes in the kitchen. You can use the bubble wrap here as well. Alternatively, you can pack these in newspapers, and thin sheets of foam. The thin sheets of foam will prevent the dishes from jarring, rubbing, or bouncing together during the move. First, you will wrap each dish, cup, saucer, bowl, in the newspaper then place a thin layer of the foam in the bottom of the large moving box. Next, add one layer of plates, then a layer of the foam, and so forth alternating the newspaper wrapped dishes and the foam.

The last dishes placed in the box should be the bowls, then the cups, and again pack the items loosely so they are not heavy and crushing one another. Mark this box as breakable dishes and hold it back to be loaded last in the moving truck or vehicle with the fragile items. When you arrive at the new location, these will be the first thing to unload and get too easily.

You can use your towels, hand towels, and blankets to wrap around any large bulky items. The masking tape will secure the towels around the items but will not create a messy film like duct tape. Packing tips for a move can also be found elsewhere on the inter net.

I have moved enough in my life to learn a few helpful tips that will save you time and headaches in the long run. Some of these ideas may sound trivial, but I promise if you put them all together, you will have a more pleasant experience in your move.

1. Set up a alpha-numeric system to assign to all your boxes. Such as assign the letter A to Attic and then label the boxes A-1, A-2, A-3, etc. Get a notebook and have a page for each box with a description of items in that box. When you arrive at your new home and Johnny wants one of his toys, you will not have to dig into 20 boxes before you find it. Also, if you don’t unpack all your boxes at once you will be able to find things faster as the need arises.

2. Buy your boxes at a half price box store. Don’t pay premium prices for boxes that you are only going to use once. In addition, you can also buy other supplies at these stores for your moving needs. You can always sell your boxes back to another box store once you’ve unpacked.

3. Establish an open me first box. Pack a box of all the essential cleaning supplies, tools, etc. that you will need as soon as you arrive. Take this box with you and if you can’t, make sure it’s the last box on the moving van, so that it will be the first off.

4. Sell, donate or throw away things you no longer need. Don’t move boxes of junk that you don’t need it’s a waste of time. Start fresh and new at your new house, with everything cleaned out. This will make you feel so much better, I promise.

5. Don’t try to unpack in one or two days. The boxes aren’t going anywhere. Take your time to move in right. Don’t get stressed, go out to eat the first night. Celebrate the move with the family or by yourself.

I hope these moving tips will help you. I know once I put them into practice it made my moves a lot easier.

  When selecting a professional moving company to move your belongings, consider this: what am

When selecting a professional moving company to move your belongings, consider this: what am I willing to leave behind when I move? Ask yourself this question, because if you pick the wrong company, you could be doing just that. Your possessions, in the wrong hands, could be damaged, lost or destroyed. So, do your homework. Below are some criteria you should consider as you begin your moving company research:

• Cost – Yes, cost is important, especially in today’s economy, but it is certainly not the only factor to consider. Remember the old adage, “you get what you pay for…”

•	References – Ask your family, friends and colleagues for recommendations;

• Insurance – A low price is no bargain if your treasured heirlooms are uninsured. Licensed movers are required to provide limited liability coverage at no additional cost; also, you can generally purchase additional coverage for an extra premium;

• Better Business Bureau (BBB) – The BBB is a private organization that attempts to mediate disagreements between businesses and consumers. They can be a good resource to measure a moving company’s reputation. You can contact the BBB to find out how many complaints have been filed regarding a particular moving company, and how quickly those complaints have been responded to/resolved. The mark of a good company is one who responds quickly to any complaint/problem;

• Storage Facilities – If your belongings are going to be put into a storage facility (instead of being immediately delivered to your new residence), with whom does your moving company contract their storage services? What do you know about the storage company and their facilities? Are they climate-controlled? Is there on-site management? 24-hour security? The answer to these questions is as important as the moving company you choose, so do your research;

• Licensing – Moving companies must adhere to both federal and state level licensing and insurance requirements before they are allowed to transport your valuables anywhere in the US. However, insurance and licensing can lapse, be revoked, or the movers may have simply not renewed on time. If you have any questions about the moving company you are considering for your relocation, take a moment to verify the status of your potential mover.
Visit the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

• Worker’s Compensation – Be certain the moving company you choose carries worker’s compensation insurance. Failure to hire a licensed company with this insurance means the liability of the workers is transferred to you;

• Moving Staff – Are the movers who will show up at your door permanent staff or temporary help? Look for moving companies who guarantee their staff is drug/alcohol-free;

• Rates – Does the moving company you are considering offer binding estimates (rates) based on the cubic feet being transported? Does the company offer different rates for local, intra and inter-state moves?

The bottom line: Yes, most things can be replaced… but wouldn’t it be easier if they didn’t have to be?

When you are getting ready to move from one place to the another you must make it smooth and avoid problems. Moving itself it is a stressful process so you can organize yourself and avoid as much stress as you can.

How to find the right way of packaging boxes for your move?

Let’s start from the beginning. Before packing up you have to develop a plan – this way you can organize the whole process and do not go mad.

- Pack every room at a time. Most of items will go in exactly the same room at the other end, so it will be easier to unpack. At the same time you can actually see what your progress is and how much left to do.
- You can star packing well ahead of the move. Just pack all unused items, winter clothes (if it’s summer), you can organize your garage, loft. Pack a few boxes a day and you will be surprised haw easy it can be.
- Make sure you have your marker pen with you. By marking every box with its destination and content you can make your life much easier when unpacking. It will also help the removal guys when loading and unloading the lorry during your removals to Paris.

They will not put a box with “plates” all over it anywhere it can be damaged. Simple but very helpful.

- When starts to packing make sure you have enough filling material with you. You can use old papers and catalogs to wrap your fragile items. Be creative use your cushions to secure the lamps in the boxes, some clothes you can pack with you expensive china or crystals. This is all make it secure. Off course your move is insured but some of the items have more personal than market value
- When you are setting up a box make sure you use enough tape to hold all the weight, the most annoying thing is to load up the box and then droop everything on the floor because the bottom was not secured properly.
- When you use the tape make sure you have a packaging tape or gum tape, the masking one may be cheaper but trust me, and it is not much difference in price but real trouble saver.
- Pack heavier items (books, Cd’s) toward the bottom of the box and all the light stuff (clothes) towards the top. It makes it safe to transport during Removals London Paris.
- The total weight of each box should not exceed 25kg and 40k for large suitcase. If you can lift your box why to think that removal guys will do.

There is always the way out. Make a plan and stick to it otherwise you will remember this move for a long time. Get everything in place a well ahead. Shop around for packaging materials and services, there is always some special deals available, but remember not all the cheapest prices are winners. Look for quality and friendly service. Make sure that your transport from London to Paris provider has a game plan – just like you.

Happy hunting!

Whether moving across the town or across the country, the experience is still stressful and time-consuming. While many times you choose to move for personal reasons, perhaps to be closer to family, you may be forced to move for your job. Uprooting from your familiar home and location is never easy, especially if you have children accustomed to their friends and school. Besides these main concerns, the act of moving itself can be nerve-wracking. Thoughts of your fragile china being crushed or your grand piano getting scratched can cause you great concern. However, there is no need to lose sleep over moving. Make it easy on yourself and hire professional movers. You simply have to box up your small and personal items and let others transport them safely to your new home. One of the biggest benefits of hiring a moving company is that it can easily handle your large and heavy furniture. Professional movers that know how to transport such heavy yet delicate objects as pianos only have to be directed where to place the furniture, leaving your furniture and nerves deftly intact.

Another concern that arises when moving may be furniture storage. Especially if you’re building your own home, you may have to take up a temporary residence while it’s under construction. However, moving from an average-sized home to a small apartment doesn’t quite work when you still have the same amount of furniture. With easily rented storage units the problem is quickly solved. Again that piano may cause you some trouble; yet, in climate controlled storage your climate-sensitive furniture is free from damage. In a storage unit, your furniture is secure and out of your way for as long as you need it to be. With the advantages of home movers and furniture storage, moving from your home can be a relatively stress-free endeavor.

Relocation is one of the most strenuous and tension filled job in anybody’s life, be it a bachelor or a family man. Of course, the family man has the additional burden of ensuring that his family has a hassle free transition to the new place. Relocation can either be temporary or permanent. Depending upon the kind of relocation there are certain issues that you need to take care of, so that they do not become too big to disturb you in the future. Even if you have carefully planned things, you may encounter costly problems when you move, especially if you have failed to anticipate the risks. Relocating involves a carefully thought, planned and executed process. While relocating, certain problems that you had never though of could arise, especially if you do not anticipate these problems. These problems can become so grave that they could lead to great financial loss and emotional distress.

The first thing that you need to be careful is the relocating process, which primarily involves the relocating companies. There are so many scams that you need to be careful while choosing the relocation company that you would like to entrust the responsibility of moving your belongings. There are rogue movers in the market who can take you for a ride. Another important factor is the adaptation of children to the new environment. You need to take a few steps to ensure that they are both adapted as well as excited to move to the new house and environment. Once you relocate there are a few things to bear in mind. Never ever finalize a vendor for any services before taking the advice of your neighbors, who have been living there for at least two years. These people have a fair idea about the credibility of people around and hence finalize only after taking advice, so that you are not cheated of your valuable money.

Once you finish reaching your destination, make sure that you are careful while unloading your belongings. Always track the damage and cross verify the contents to make sure that nothing is lost. Professional companies are always a safe bet as these companies are very careful and well organized as far as the entire process is concerned. Make sure that your documents are all in order while relocating, as most states require you to furnish a list of items that you are relocating, in order to ensure that no business is taking place. In the absence of any proper documentation, these items can be classified as commercial, and tax levied on them. Hence, make sure that you have all documents to prove that the belongings are being moved for personal reasons of relocating.

Why do we obsess over what we pack? The worst things to forget are a cell phone charger, passport or photo ID, enough cash and the name and address of your hotel.

Nevertheless, packing can be painful even for an experienced traveler. The night before my trip to Chile I found myself in frenzy mode packing one small roll-aboard suitcase for 3 weeks and covering climates from Santiago and Buenos Aires warm and sophisticated, to Patagonia trekking, to Tierra del Fuego freezing and zodiac boat cruises right up to glaciers. Seems like I always need more time to pack and plan and research. It helped a lot to Google the weather for the next 10 days in all three areas of Chile (north, Patagonia and extreme south). So I packed 3 pairs of shoes…light sandals for the city, light but sturdy and water proof hiking boots, and very light tennis shoes. I’ll need the tennis shoes when I bike through the wine area. Heavy things I can leave at home: hair dryer and more than one reading book.

What does one do on a 16-hour flight? I’ve downloaded podcasts, news programs, music and my favorite CD’s, and I always bring my inflatable pillow and silicon ear plugs.

Now I’m euphoric. Packing done, boarding pass in pocket, good music, good book and time to relax and read the pages I copied out of the guidebooks. Adios!

The process of moving home can be daunting. Deciding where you are relocating to, where the children

The process of moving home can be daunting. Deciding where you are relocating to, where the children will go to school, even the implications on your social life all play a part in adding to the strain. So if there is a way to make life easier for yourself, you should take advantage of it. Preparation is the key.

One way to reduce the stress, (and get a better quote from your removals company) is to start your packing as early as possible. If you have a good idea of the number of boxes you need moved, your quote will be easier to calculate and you will be unlikely to get a nasty surprise on the day of your move. Most removal companies base their price on the amount they are moving, though there are other considerations, such as access and distance.

The first step is to throw away or give away everything that you don’t need. There are almost certainly several boxes that you don’t need to pack. That means fewer boxes to move and a cheaper quote. You don’t want to be paying to move things to your new home if they are just going straight in the bin.

Start packing all the things you don’t use very often. Packing materials can usually be purchased from your local removals company. If possible, use recycled boxes. Newspaper is fine for packing some things, but you can buy packing paper quite cheaply.

Your packed boxes should be closed, sealed and labeled. The label should indicate to which room the box is destined, (so the removals men know where to put it) and which room it came from, (so you have an idea what is in it). Remember that these boxes will need to be stacked on the van, so don’t overload them or leave them open. Use scrunched-up paper to fill voids and keep fragiles from knocking against each other. If you can hear items knocking together in a box when you move it, there’s a good chance of those items getting damaged in transit. The removals company is not responsible for the content of boxes that you pack yourself, unless the box shows signs of external damage.

Often, poor packing can make large heavy items difficult to lift and carry. Get advice from whoever is moving you.

If you are not sure how to pack your fragile items, or if you don’t have time, many removals companies offer a packing service. This may be limited to just packing the kitchen, or fine china from your display cabinets.

In the later stages of packing, keep one box open for the things you will need access to throughout the actual move. For example, medicines, mobile phone charger, etc. Don’t pack your kettle until last. Occasional cups of tea or coffee will keep your removals team happy and a happy team will make the day less of a strain.

Relocation is often a very stressful and overly pressing ordeal that most people are dealing with. However, despite of this more and more individuals are resorting to moving to a different area reaching up to half a million relocation cases in every year. This decision is usually influenced by different factors and reasons such as going to college or a new school, new opportunities or career advancements and even new home acquisition. It is therefore an imperative notion that a checklist for moving must be thoroughly studied and reviewed.

Having a good and systematic checklist of the things you are going to do definitely facilitate your relocation and make it more convenient and easier. The transition process of dealing with new environment and people is already a tension filled activity in the first place hence, make your endeavors less stressful by integrating organization and orderliness in everything you do from start to finish. You may begin with an objective guideline that you are going to base everything you need to do and accomplish in the process of moving.

One of the most important and initial steps in moving is through a proper inventory of all your belongings and possessions. You need to assess your items and try to evaluate if you still need them or not. For those that you can actually give up and do without, you may still have a better use of them and gain extra income by putting them on garage sale and the like. This is a very noble and sure way of generating income while you are de-cluttering your surroundings. Hence, you are definitely hitting two birds with one stone as you utilize this practical tip.

When you are going to relocate, you definitely need to consider hiring a contractor or movers to help you with your endeavor. Promptly make a reservation for the moving vehicle or truck that you need to transport your belongings. Take advantage of the different incentives and promotional packages that most moving companies give to their clients who make early reservation for their relocation processes. Making sure that you are ahead of time in your vehicle reservation is also very important if you are to choose the most appropriate size and type of vehicle for your transport needs.

After making sure that you have thoroughly dealt with all of these initial entries in your checklist, you need to review and re-assess everything from the packing to the truck reservation to the exact moving ordeals. This is to ensure that you are not missing anything and that everything is in proper system and place. You can never compromise any trivial mistakes that would definitely affect your relocation.

Always create your own checklist for an efficient and effective moving pursuit and to make your endeavor successful and something to remember. It is definitely a valuable investment thus never allow any mistakes in your preparation to ruin this important venture. Bear in mind that system and accurate forecasting of all your needs is vital to enjoy productive and efficient results when you move.

Today I’m continuing the tips from my last post on basic packing for moving tips. These ideas should help make the moving process easier and more manageable. NOTE: Steps 1-5 were in my last post, and steps 6-10 are in this one.

6.    Furniture with small parts.

When taking apart items to be moved, such as tables, you want to make sure that all the screws and other small parts don’t get lost or confused in the move. To prevent this problem, wrap all of the tiny parts in a freezer bag. Then securely tape the bag to the underside of the item. This keeps the parts with the item they came from, saving hours of time and worry.

7.    Alternate packing materials.

Here’s a way to solve two problems with one solution. When packing fragile items, use old towels, pillows, sheets, rags and t-shirts to use as cushioning around the objects. This provides extra protection against damage in transit, and will save plenty of room in your boxes.

8. Criss-cross tape on box flaps.

Tape boxes along the seams where the flaps meet together. Then tape perpendicularly at the center of the first tape, forming a cross. This method provides extra protection against seams bursting in the move.

9.    Stacking boxes.

Stack boxes by putting the heaviest on the bottom and the lightest on top to prevent crushing. Don’t stack boxes higher than shoulder height to reduce the chances of toppling. Where possible, stack them against walls, leaving plenty of open space to handle wrapping and moving furniture. Make sure there is an easy path to enter and exit the room.
10.    The 30-pound rule.

Keep each box below 50 pounds absolute maximum and below 30 pounds wherever possible. Heavier boxes lead to a number of problems, including injuries; rips, tears, and burst seams; and chances of being dropped when loaded or unloaded. Keep a bathroom scale in the room you’re packing so you can keep the boxes below the weight limits.

Packing for a move is never a fun experience. The good news is that taking just a few steps can lead

Packing for a move is never a fun experience. The good news is that taking just a few steps can lead to less stress and better results. I’m presenting the tips in both today’s post (part 1) and the one to follow (part 2):

1. Luggage for Everyone.

Before packing boxes and wrapping furniture, pack a suitcase or backpack the same way you would if you were going on vacation for a few days. You’ll nee top pack 3 full outfits, eyeglasses, toiletries, prescriptions (very important to include), etc. The idea is a simple one- if you have all the basics you’ll need in the suitcases and keep them nearby (kept separate from all the boxes), you can avoid a lot of scrambling and hunting through boxes when you reach your new home.

2. “Open Me First” boxes.

This is a similar idea to the suitcase suggestion listed in Step 1. For every room in your house, there will be certain items you’ll need right away. Rather than mixing all your items together in different boxes, keep those “needed immediately” things in one or two boxes for that room. Label these special boxes with bright red markers so they’ll stand out from all the others. This will make it easy to get the basics set up right away.

3. Focus on one room at a time.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with packing all your treasures. That can tempt you into trying to pack parts of different rooms, then ending up with a sense of chaos and little actually finished. Instead, focus on packing just one room at a time. This will do wonders to keep things focused and organized.

4. “Clean house” before “packing house.”

One of the big reasons that packing takes so long is because of the shear volume of possessions we accumulate. Use packing as a way to clean out items for donations, a moving sale, and/or the recycling center. Aim to eliminate 1/3 of your belongings- that might be more than you can stand, but will give you a noble goal. You’ll save time and expense.

5. Try using a card table.

Whenever possible, use a portable table (such as a card table, a completely cleared-off furniture top or counter in each room for packing boxes. Using the floor limits your mobility and can cause aches and cramps. You’ll find you get much more accomplished if you stick to the card table.

If you are considering moving your belongings into storage, you will most likely need to pack your things into boxes. You may be asking yourself, “How many boxes do I need, and where will I get them?” It can be difficult to estimate how many boxes your will need up until the day you move your items into storage.

The best way to determine how many boxes you will need is to go room-to-room and create an inventory list of items that will be going into storage. An inventory is already necessary if you are purchasing storage insurance, and is recommended for all storage users–after all, if you won’t see your stuff for some time, will you remember what you put in storage if you suddenly need something? Once you have a list, you can determine what size boxes and which types of boxes you will need.

Here are some suggestions on where to get your boxes:

Purchase from moving/storage company: This is one of the pricier options, but brand new boxes sold at your storage or moving company will be sturdy and will safely transport your belongings. Most companies offer a variety of boxes, such as file boxes, T.V. boxes, mattress boxes, and wardrobe boxes.

Collect used boxes from grocery stores, liquor stores, and other retailers: Wine and liquor boxes are particularly handy for fragile glass items as many of these boxes contain cell packs (cardboard dividers). Be careful not to use flimsy boxes.

Ask your friends and neighbors: Most likely you will know someone who has recently moved or who has a bunch of boxes that they want to recycle.

Some moving companies offer box exchange programs: Ask your moving or storage company if they know where you can get donated boxes from prior customers.

Go onto Craigslist, and check the free section for moving boxes: All you need to do is be the first to respond to the ad.

Borrow plastic containers or purchase plastic containers: To reduce the number of cardboard boxes used, plastic is a great, reusable alternative. Some eco-friendly moving companies now rent moving containers made from recycled plastic.

Good luck on packing and moving your belongings into storage!

Moving is something many people dread. The packing, the unpacking, and all the boxes can be overwhelming quickly!

To avoid a frustrating moving experience, here are a few tips to make it a little easier, on both you and the environment:

Purge before you pack – have 3 bins labeled as Trash, Donate, and Sell. Make sure anything that belongs in one of these categories is sorted, purged, and doesn’t go with you to the new place!

If it doesn’t sell, give it away – remember, the goal is to get rid of the item. Posting on websites such as Craigslist and Freecycle are great ways to advertise.

Use Frogbox reusable moving boxes – these plastic moving boxes are used hundreds of times, saving trees and preventing tons of cardboard waste from entering landfills. Frogbox also provides recycled packing paper. They are one of my favorite moving tools!

Packing in same-size boxes means easier stacking – whether you use Frogbox or just regular cardboard boxes, try to get multiples in the same size.

Label, label, label – not only should you label what’s inside the box but also what room the box belongs in. This will make it straight forward for movers to place the box in the correct room.

Avoid mixing items in a single box – as you pack, limit adding items from another room into a box just to fill it up. It will be a lot easier to unpack if the contents of each box go with a specific room.

Limit loose items – make sure you pack everything! Tossing small items into a car or van will only create confusion later. No matter how silly it seems to pack some items, it will be easier for your movers to stack and move similar size boxes than several odd-shaped items. It will also allow for unpacking at your destination to go much smoother since each item will be labeled inside a box.
