If you are seeing this error thrown only when dynamic ASPX pages are requested; static HTML files, images etc are served just fine.

This error is caused by the fact that IIS 6 disallows the ASP.NET 2.0 Web Service Extension. To fix this, follow these steps:

1. Open up the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager (which you find under Administrative Tools)
2. Expand your server
3. Select Web Service Extensions
4. In the right hand pane, click ASP.NET v2.0.50727 (or a later version number) and then click the Allow button.

post this, IIS is allowed to serve ASP.NET 2.0 pages, and should’nt throw 404 errors for every page in your site

“Page Not Found” This is something just about everyone has seen at one time or another if you’ve spent anytime online at all. The “web” term for these pages are called 404-pages.

Now you are probably thinking why is a “page not found” or a 404 error page a website mistake, and that would be a fair question to be asking, so let me explain what this mistake is, how you can benefit from it and how to correct it.

First we’ve already mentioned “what” it is but let me explain how “people” get there. 404’s are usually found either from a broken link on your website some where; or someone has tried to type in a url to a specific page on your site and has either mistyped it or the page is no longer there. It is possible that you will see in your stats that there have been requests for your robot.txt fie which is a common file that search engine spiders look for, and if you don’t have one then a 404 page would be triggered.

Now to explain how 404 pages can “help” you. There is a lot of discussion about what should or shouldn’t be displayed on your 404 page or if you should even display the error page. My personal opinion is to display the page but have key elements on the page, such as a logo or look and feel of your website, along with a message saying that the page they are looking for was not found but click here to go to the home page of your website.

Another option is if the visitor hits your 404 page, automatically redirect them to the home page of your website. This option works really well, but in discussions I’ve heard people say that the visitor is a little confused as to what just happened.

By utilizing the custom 404 page, you don’t miss out on the opportunity to connect with that visitor. With out any information on that page the visitor would just enter something else into the web address bar and go else where.

The easiest way to remedy this issue is to log in to your control panel (cpanel) and look for the icon that says “Error Pages”. This will list all of them, be sure to click the 404 and enter your information there. If you are unsure what to put there you can search Google to see some examples.

If you are uncomfortable doing this you can easily hire a programmer from rent-a-coder.com or getafreelancer.com to quickly do this for you. It is a quick project and once you have a template you can copy and paste it into your other sites.

For the past week, I’ve been pretending to be a build engineer and trying to set up CruiseControl.NET to automate our builds. On previous teams, I’ve been fortunate to have a dedicated build engineer dedicated solely to this type of task, and after trying to set up CC.NET myself, I can honestly say I appreciate what they do – this entire process has been *NSFW* *NSFW*.

Case in point: CC.NET installs and sets up a web dashboard for teams to be able to look at the status of their builds from a browser. Ideally, it would work out of the box, but we know in reality that’s often not the case. Even after following the detailed instructions to set up the dashboard manually, I kept getting a Page Not Found error.

After pouring through the blogs and forums without luck, and nearly breaking down in tears, I remembered that the CC.NET server is supposed to generate the dashboard’s ASP.NET pages, and I chanced on this setting in IIS:

After allowing ASP.NET extensions in IIS, the dashboard rendered correctly.

I am using computer all day long for different works.  As a student, i find internet as a very useful source of knowledge.  I can also say that I’m very much dependent on computers so having the message “Page Not Found” is such a big problem for me.  I have called my internet service provider and they told me that I just have to renew my IP address each time this happens.  Here’s how:

1. Open Run and type in cmd.  This would open a black window which is the command prompt.
2. Type in ‘ipconfig’ then press ‘enter’ if you would like to know what is your IP address before renewing it.  If not, just continue to step 3.
3. Type ‘ipconfig/release’ then hit ‘enter’.
4. Next is type in ‘ipconfig/renew’.
5. Last step is to close the window or type exit and press enter.  You would now have another IP address assigned to your computer.

The Error 404 ” Page Not Found” is the error page displayed whenever someone asks for a page that is simply not available on the site. The reason for this is that there may be a link on your site that was wrong or the page might have been recently removed from the site. As there is no web page to display the web server sends a page that simply says “404 Page Not Found”. Now thw advantage of using customized 404 error page is highly useful because it enables you to benefit from traffic that would have otherwise been lost. But one dark side to it is it can make maintaining the site more difficult. Usually whan a server encounters a 404 error it records the details about the event into its log file. For example you accidentally linked to”abutus.html” somewhere in your page instead of using the correct filename “aboutus.html”. The functionality offered by log files makes it a great help to keep your site relatively free of insite broken links. If you replace the standard 404 error page you cannot utilize this feature. Finding and fixng errors will become a difficult task causing them to pile up over time and deteriorate the image of the website. So in my opinion one needs to audit the website to ensure that at all times the pages on your website are 404 error free.
