Wikileaks is an international non-profit organization that has released some 573,000 pager messages from the 9/11 tragedy. This corpus of text messages covers a 24 hour period directly related to the attacks in New York and Washington. As Wikileaks notes:

Text pagers are usually carried by persons operating in an official capacity. Messages in the archive range from Pentagon, FBI, FEMA and New York Police Department exchanges, to computers reporting faults at investment banks inside the World Trade Center

The archive is a completely objective record of the defining moment of our time. We hope that its entrance into the historical record will lead to a nuanced understanding of how this event led to death, opportunism and war.

There have been some interesting visualizations, applications and tools but this corpus is a research report waiting to happen. Journalism students, linguists, social scientists: get cracking.

Wikileaks veröffentlicht heute Mittwoch über 500.000 abgefangene Pager-Nachrichten, die meisten stammen von ranghohen Regierungsbeamten. Wikileaks will damit Licht damit dazu beitragen, die Geschehnisse des 11. Septembers 2001 besser zu verstehen.

Die Pager-Nachrichten werden heute 24 Stunden lang in “Echtzeit”, veröffentlicht werden. Über seinen Twitter-Account will Wikileaks den Lesern eine Möglichkeit zum mitdiskutieren geben. Es gibt sogar ein eigenes Hashtag für die Aktion: #911txts .

Kann Wikileaks mithelfen, die Geschehnisse besser zu verstehen?

Wikileaks erhofft sich von dieser Aktion, etwas zu einem tieferen Verständnis der Geschehnisse des 11. September beizutragen. Auf ihrer Seite schreiben die Betreiber: “Das Archiv ist ein vollkommen objektiver Bericht des prägenden Moments unserer Zeit. Wir hoffen, dass seine Enthüllung zu einem detaillierteren Verständnis der Geschehnisse und ihrer tragischen Konsequenzen führen wird.” Die User werden dazu aufgerufen, beim Einordnen der Nachrichten mitzuhelfen.

Cand eram in anul I, am aflat o metoda (muncitoreasca, politehnista, spuneti-i cum vreti) de a avea Yahoo Multi Messenger pe computer, fara a downloada nimic. Presupune doar putin lucru cu registri, iar cu instructiunile urmatoare, oricine poate face asta.

Va garantez 100% ca merge, indiferent de versiunea de Yahoo! Messenger pe care o aveti instalata. Asta daca urmati intocmai pasii de mai jos. O sa pun print screen-uri, si detalii multe. Succes!

Pe un calculator cu Yahoo! Messenger instalat, faceti urmatoarele:

Pasul 1. In fereastra de Run a Windows-ului, tastati “regedit” si apoi apasati butonul “Ok” (Start -> Run -> regedit)

Pasul 2. Va aparea o fereastra cu numele “Registry Editor”. Acolo, trebuie sa expandati tree-ul. Adica:

- un click pe semnul + din dreptul lui HKEY_CURRENT_USER

-un click pe semnul + din dreptul lui Software

-un click pe semnul + din dreptul lui Yahoo

-un click pe semnul + din dreptul lui Pager

-un click pe folderul Test

Recapitulam: HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Yahoo ->Pager -> Test

Pasul 3. Avand selectat folderul “Test” in tree-ul din stanga, in jumatatea cealalta de fereastra din dreapta, faceti click-dreapta -> New -> DWord value, si ii puneti numele “Plural”.

Pasul 4. Click-dreapta pe “Plural”, si apoi selectati Modify.

Pasul 5. In fereastra nou aparuta, in loc de 0 (zero), puneti cifra 1 (unu). Apasati Ok, si aveti multi Mess!

Avantajele sunt multiple si evidente:

• Aveti propria varianta de multi Mess, imediat ce a aparut o noua versiune de Yahoo! Messenger.
• Nu downloadati fisiere suspecte de la surse suspecte.
• Nu instalati nimic, deci scade riscul de a virusa computerul.
• Dureaza cateva minute (cel mult), si nu (prea) aveti ce strica.
• Nu exista probleme de compatibilitate, caci sunt aceiasi pasi de urmat, indiferent de versiunea de Yahoo! Messenger pe care o aveti instalata pe computer.

Daca aveti intrebari sau nelamuriri, va voi raspunde cu placere . Spor la tastat!

Firefox

Para aquellos que no saben Firefox permite agregar complementos a su software los cuales agregan nuevas funciones.

A continuación les pasare a mostrar algunos complementos que tendrías que saber que existen si todavía no las usas.

Los siguientes complementos fueron probados en el Firefox 3.5.3. O sea que es necesario tener el software instalado.

ADBLOCK PLUS

La verdad que todo el mundo tendría que tenerlo instalado. Es un plugin que quita la mayoría de la publicidad de las paginas webs (popups, la publicidad camuflada de google y demás).

Luego de instalado es necesario ir al logo rojo que dice ABP (con forma hexagonal), presionar botón derecho > preferencias > filtros > Añadir suscripción de filtros

Aparecerán varias direcciones con un círculo de form a su izquierda. Nos subscribimos a alguno, reiniciamos Firefox y ya tendríamos que estar navegando sin publicidad.

Si a algún website por alguna razón lo necesitan con publicidad, apretando botón derecho en el loguito de ABP se puede poner “desactivar para X sitio”.

AUTOPAGER

Cansados de buscar en google y tener que apretar “siguiente pagina” bueno, he aquí la solución. La función de “autopager” es automatizar ese click, así que al llegar al 75% de la página (verticalmente), el complemento se encarga de cargar la siguiente y pegarla abajo. Una screenshot así entienden mejor:

Luego de instalado cuando nos metamos en google por ejemplo, va a saltar un cartelito en ingles que te pregunta si querés habilitar el autopager para ese website. Presionar siempre okay, o aceptar y listo.

SKIPSCREEN

Lo que hace este complemento es omitir el tiempo de espera de ciertas paginas web de almacenamientos de archivos (tale como Rapidshare, Megaupload, etc.). Si por alguna razón no puede saltearlos, como es en el caso de Rapidshare, lleva la cuenta y cuando termina automáticamente pone a bajar el archivo.

We do get pagers so that we can be contacted at any time. I had a definite misadventure with mine.

I was all excited to have my first pager! I have never had one before, as cell phones are more practical for most members of society. Needless to say, I had a burning curiosity to see that it worked. So I sent my self a page. Nothing.. Okay. Maybe you should add a * at the end. Nope. Maybe a #? Nothing.. Do I need to set up my voicemail first? Still not working.. Guh. Technology. So I sent an email to the administrator of my program and then tried again every day, thinking maybe now it will work. By the end of this week I had tried every conceivable way to page someone, convinced that I was just doing it wrong. Well, Wednesday afternoon I was sitting in my office, studying away, when the phone rang. It was a classmate. Idly I wondered how she had gotten my home number, daft as ever to put 2 and 2 together.

Somehow, by the UNIQUE AS EVER power of technology, my pages were being sent, via wormhole, to another student in my class. The numbers were different, we had our own voicemails that were working correctly. It  was only the pages — which, according to the company hosting out services, do not have the capacity to be forwarded. I have no idea how many pages I sent this poor woman. Of course I felt terrible, but she was a good sport, and there was a lot of laughter. Eventually, I went to the administrator myself, and the pager was reset and working fine. Except, when I went to class, the other student told me she had been paged with another pager number…

There have been many a day where something like this would have come in handy!

Hier wieder einmal eine schöne Erfindung, die bei drängenden Problemen des Alltags hilft: Wer kennt nicht die Situation, dass man bei einer ansonsten recht netten Alkoholisierungs- veranstaltung das eigene Bier nur wenige Sekunden aus den Aufgen verloren hat, um es dann prompt nicht wieder zu finden?

Glücklich, wer sich dann Besitzer eines Beer Pagers nennen kann.

Der nämlich findet das vermisste Getränk auf eine Distanz von bis zu 20 Metern und veranlasst seine Verpackung, aufzublinken und ein Rülpsgeräusch von sich zu geben.

Getränkediebe werden in einer solchen Situation natürlich schamvoll erröten, besserung geloben und umgehend neue Getränke aus dem Kühlschrank besorgen, was die Investition von 20 Dollar durchaus lohnend erscheinen lässt. [dieter]

A través de este comentario en stackoverflow descubro que existe un mecanismo sencillo para enviar SMS, Simple Network Paging Protocol (SNPP). Me temo que aquí, en España, no habrá ningún operador que lo soporte.

Back in the day anyone who was anyone had a pager, doctors, nurses, business people, firemen, coastguards, IT pros.  I even had one myself for a short time.

The pager was in essence one of the most important pieces of technology of its time.  It offered for the first time a way to relay small pieces of information to people whilst they where away from a fixed line phone and is the reason why people like Sir Christopher Gent went on to develop the Mobile Phone technology we use today.

The first pager (type) system was introduced way back in 1921 by Detroit Police Department. However, it was not until 1949 that the very first telephone pager was patented.  The first successful consumer pager was Motorola’s Pageboy I first introduced in 1974. It had no display and could not store messages, however, it was portable and notified the wearer that a message had been sent.

By 1980, there were 3.2 million pager users worldwide. At that time pagers had a limited range and were used mostly in on-site situations for example when medical workers communicate with each other within a hospital.

By 1990, wide-area paging had been invented and over 22 million pagers were in use. By 1994, there were over 61 million pagers in use and pagers.

But their domonation of communications was not to last, in the early 1990’s as the 2G 900 MHz Mobile Phone network began to roll out, people began to prefer voice to voice communication over that of the pager.  In Finland in 2003 the first person to person text message was sent and the demise of the consumer pager had begun.

In 2001, with only 30,000 users in the UK – Orange decided enough was enough and switched off their pager network, offering customers £50 of executive gifts or a free mobile phone as a replacement.

Vodafone however kept on going and today has the only Pager network in the UK.  Pagers are still today a vital method of commication to the emergency services (and any business that must communicate vital up to date information) such as on call firefighters, doctors and coastguards.  The devices have the ability to receive text as well as offering signal where mobile phone’s fail, a long battery live and great robustness.

What amazes me most, that today we have not moved on from that of the people on the go in the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s. 70’s and 80’s We all crave data and information knowmatter where we are or what we are doing.

Since 2008, many patients in our practice are quite surprised when they actually reach a physician directly when they call our after-hours number.

What the patients don’t realize is that our practice is also quite happy with this set-up!

Why? Well, that after-hours number is actually a Google Voice number and it provides amazing functionality that is FREE that would have costed us thousands of dollars otherwise.

Using Google Voice, the after-hours number can be forwarded to any physician who may be on-call easily and immediately. When the physician answers a call, an automated Google message is heard alerting the physician that the incoming call is from a patient. Should the call get missed, the patient can leave an answering machine message. Google Voice TRANSCRIBES the voice mail message and emails it to the physician’s cell phone. This last bit is great as often calls come in while we may be in surgery or on another call.

SO, Google Voice provides options for the physician:

1) Answer an incoming call immediately and be alerted that it is a patient calling

OR

2) Read the transcribed voice mail (imitates an answering service and pager all-in-one) before returning a call

How cool is that… and all for free!

I generally find inspiration in the weirdest things. This morning as I lingered in bed in a sleepy daze, after a short nap because my husband’s off today and I’d gotten up at 6 AM—early for me—and wanted a few more winks, I tuned in to the various sounds of morning. My ceiling fan whirling around with its own drum beat, birds praising God, a neighbor mowing his lawn, cars driving by every now and again, my daughter laughing. Then I heard this unexpected intercom-type noise, someone being paged on a walkie-talkie maybe, and BAM.

It doesn’t seem like much at all. Just a voice. Just a call. Something tiny and insignificant really. But no, I didn’t see it that way, and neither did my new character who’s just been handed a baton she never asked for and can’t for her life get rid of. The burly doctor who held it before her committed suicide. What on earth will she do when people start dying at her hand? She can’t run. She tries. She can’t avoid people. She tries that too. She can’t escape her destiny. Nor can she forsake The List.

I don’t know where I’ll go with it yet. It’s inspiration that waits to be fleshed out. I have many such ideas for stories running through my head. Some leaning more adult, some more YA. This feels YA to me, and is aching to be in First Person–which I’ve never wielded before–but I need to wait to see where KINGS & QUEENS is positioned first so I don’t waste my time writing for the wrong peeps. I write for readers who love suspense stories, not really a particular age group, but in the end, it’s all about shelving and my main characters need to fit in a certain age bracket. Suspense with extra toppings, especially some weird ones, will be my niche for a while. Whether that’s YA or adult will be up to the big guys. My future projects wait for the almighty arrow.

Either way, I’ll write the same. Always building in complexity and layers in the plot points and prose, always promising multifaceted, engaging characters worth reading about,  always sharing something a little bit weird.

Where do you find your inspiration? I found mine this morning in a wake-up call. It can be found in a myth, a news article, a secret, a dream, a photo or a new development. Take up your pen. Go find inspiration. It’s paging you.

Wii sports are being used to help PAGER Members keep fit in Withernsea. The Wii ENABLE PROJECT has been helping them to use the popular games console to take part in beneficial exercise. They have been playing interactive games of boxing, tennis, bowling and golf.

Apparently the group members are having so much fun that they are quite keen to keep the project running after it finishes at the end of July.

The group has invited others to join in the fitness fun! It meets for the next three Thursdays in July 2009 at the resort’s SHoRes Centre.

I have started a new research project for Oldschool Linux, a taskbar roundup to pick the best lightweight pager/taskbar.

So far, I’ve been pleasantly surprized by tint2, and it’s become my new king. It lacks a menu, and has a few rough edges, but so far it’s really wonderful.

UPDATE: tint2 doesn’t seem to work with Openbox and tray icons.  Since the screenshots above show tray icons, maybe it’s some setting I need to make.  I’ll investigate that later.
