So it’s Tuesday, and that means it’s time to discuss something cool! I love Tuesdays for this reason. I get to surf around, jumping from magazine excerpts to online articles to past projects we, at DBS, have done. I understand that the whole reason something is a “trend” is that it is spicy, new, innovative, different, and it won’t be around for long - ::cue sad face:: – but if you have the patience to tweak these so-called ‘trends’ every few years, you will be ahead of the bunch and will start setting trends. Then you can credit us for giving you that little push that you needed to step outside of the box! (There’s also that burning hope that the trend will become trendy again, i.e. bell-bottom jeans!)

So I found this trend that I am absolutely loving, even though it’s a little modern for my taste. It really livens up a room. Hey, accented colors could help liven up your mood, as well! Even if you’re thinking, ‘not my cup of tea’, at least check out the gallery. It’s something to be inspired about.

Trend: Painted Glass Backsplash

Gray is the new Black

“More and more kitchen and bath remodelers are incorporating gray color schemes into their designs. Gray’s ability to provide a clean, sophisticated look without overpowering the design is the reason the color tone is becoming popular. Off-white and white are still the most common color schemes in kitchens and baths, with beige and bone coming in second place. Brown is the third most popular color in kitchens, and fourth in bathrooms, just behind gray. There has been an increase in the use of bronze/terracotta, and well as green in kitchens. Green has been popular in bathrooms as well, along with blue.” -CaseIndy.com

Have a good rest of this rainy Tuesday!

I was originally inspired by the painted glass I saw on Pinterest and I read about several different ways to do it. I loved the idea of doing a design on the bottle but then I thought a message would be really special and who better to honour then my Mom and my Mother-in-law!

So I have been waiting for a good reason to do another version of the painted glass. (I did the Painted Glass Jars for Easter already) I read about two ways to write a message. The first way is to use your glue gun. I used a baby food jar and gave this a go. The great part is that if you make a mistake it can peel right off! However, I found it hard to be precise when holding and squeezing the glue gun. I have a big old one that I have had for a long time so you may be successful with one of the smaller glue guns.

Here is a baby food jar that I practiced on. I used the glue gun to make hearts.

Here is the spray paint I used! It is Krylon indoor/outdoor.

Hey, this turned out cute too. The hearts were all different and some were better than others.

In this next photo I practiced my writing in hot glue and with 3D paint. It was much easier for me to be neat with the paint so that is what I decided to use for my project. I bought two 1/2 litre wine carafes at the thrift store for a couple of dollars. I already had the spray paint from my last project (sorry for the same colours again!) so I put all of my money into beautiful flowers!

I made myself a stencil on lined paper and i stuffed it inside the jar. I put a squished up bag in behind to hold it tightly. I loved the idea that the message was in my own handwriting.

Here they are! I left them overnight to dry.

The carafes are ready to be painted.

Find a place where it is well ventilated to spray the glass. I just kept going back and recoating until I was happy with the coverage. My glass carafes are now vases for Mother’s Day!

My Message

I am going to be away this week-end so my Mom and I celebrated Mother’s Day today. I took my Mom out for lunch and presented her with her vase of flowers! My Mother-in-law will be getting hers later so don’t tell her! ha ha

I loved this project and I hope you do too!

As we move from rain to more rain and even more rain, I start to think of ways to make the world a bit brighter. I have decided that yellow, orange and gentle reds are the colour of the moment to try and pretend that the world is slightly warmer and brighter than it really is. This is the magic of glass. It is such a simple idea. Plain glass lets the light in and brings the light into our homes and workspaces but a little bit of colour can add a warmth and glow to that light. This can lift our mood, make us more positive and make us nicer to be around. Is it all that simple? Yes it can be. We all now know that we can recover quicker in hospital if we can see out a window and can see trees, fields and animals. So as you walk across the room and you pass through a warm glow of light coming in a stained glass window it can lighten our mood and lift our spirits. It does not need to be a great deal of colour but a small additional pool of light can make so much difference to us all.

There’s nothing I love more than personalizing a gift. That’s part of what makes me sooo

There’s nothing I love more than personalizing a gift. That’s part of what makes me sooo excited for the Tenereze launch on May 10th. One of my favorite items are the gorgeous, jewel-colored bud vases sets. I was super inspired to give them a mini makeover with a detailed paint job. This is a project you can do in an hour or all afternoon – it’s up to you.

Here’s what you need:

A small, detail paint brush

White acrylic paint

Tenereze bud vases

Acrylic gloss or Mod Podge (optional)

Large flat brush (optional)

1. First, gather your materials. The gloss medium or Mod Podge is optional since it depends on whether you’re going to get the vases wet or not. They’re not totally waterproof but they give it a nice glossy finish.

Acrylic white paint

Optional materials like gloss medium or Mod Podge give the vases a shiny look.

2. Mix the paint with just a few drops of water to give it a nice, workable consistency. You want it to be easy to work with but not become too thin. You’ll know it’s too thin if it gathers and pearls on the glass surface.

3. Holding the neck of the vase, start on the bottom with a pattern. Acrylic paint dries quickly so working efficiently is key. Don’t fret about individual marks, it’s the collective shape and design that matters. If you feel like you messed up, take a damp paper towel and wipe away the mistake. If you need to start over, you can wash the vase with soap and water.

Holding the neck, start at the bottom and work your way up.

4. Once the bottom is dry (after 5-7 minutes), stand the vase upright to get the finishing details on the top.

5. Let your vase dry completely, another 10 minutes. This is where you would apply a layer of sealant to further protect your pretty work. Experiment with different color paints, patterns and layers of paint.

The arrangement I made here was simply to add to my studio. I may or may not add flowers to them but I really do think they look handsome without. What do you think?

Connected waves, little slashes (these remind me of fish!), dots galore

This would make an awesome gift for bridesmaids, girlfriends or sisters. I could totally picture having an evening of wine and painting with my girls. I hope you’ll try this easy project and send me your photos. Have a lovely day!

April 2, 2012

We arrived early Monday morning to begin the careful removal of four windows on the Northern facade of the building. Over a century of vandalism has left little to conserve but we were determined to salvage every little shard for our records. Here you can see for the first time that we are dealing with a combination of flashed glass and painted glass… no typical stained glass here!

A frail skeleton of lead-work with a few (mostly broken) pieces of glass remain… it took a lot of patient chiseling before we were able to free the windows from the shallow stone channels in which they were set, but we were able to pull all four in just one day.

During the next few weeks the windows will be thoroughly documented, disassembled, cleaned and completely rebuilt at our school in St. Clairsville, OH.

So the new design is a vintage style bird cage with 2 hand painted love birds sitting in it on clear, seedy glass. All made using traditional leading and painting techniques, just like church stained glass windows, these panels are fresh and contemporary and will look great in any home. On my first batch I have painted the words love birds into the coloured glass areas and they are perfect for any sunny window; however, they come into their own when the love birds inscription is changed to the names of a happy couple for a wedding, engagement or anniversary. I can also make these in any colour, one of my current commissions is to use blue and yellow glass as this is the colours of the brides favourite football team! Fancy one? I have 3 sizes for every pocket, from £45 to £8. Have I solved your present problems? Then order one off my website or my folksy shop!

A few months ago as I quickly gathered my books after pathology class I turned to Brian and said “I just had a great idea, I’ll run it by you this evening.” He laughed and said that he had an idea too and that I better not have stolen his… it wasn’t until later that day on our way to pottery class that we had the chance to discuss the ideas that had occurred to us during lecture that morning.

We’ve all heard it said that great minds think alike and while making no claims to greatness it is at the very least one heck of a coincidence that has led to the project behind this blog. As it turns out we HAD been thinking the exact same thing and we quickly made our way to Greenwood Cemetery to wrap our minds around what we were about to propose.

This blog follows the restoration process of the tracery windows of one of Wheeling’s finest mausoleums. We are deeply humbled by this opportunity and are committed to honoring those that reside within its walls by conserving as much of the original materials as possible and replacing that which can not be saved with historical accuracy.

Hey all. Since I’ve been crafting like a mad-woman, I have had to keep myself inspired. This is something that is actually an important thing to note as a designer and artist. Some people argue that they have not a creative bone in their body but I honestly think it has to do with constantly keeping yourself inspired and part of that is your own research. That is a big reason why I started this blog. I thought, “How could I come up with a new blog post 5 days a week?” The truth is that the more I get into this blog, the more inspired I get and the more I am able to share. I look at other blogs daily, keep up on magazines, design shows and Etsy has actually been one of my favorite spots for inspiration. So I wanted to share a few awesome products that have inspired me lately:

Tissue Pom Poms I love the muted feminine color palette.
