Palabea.com nennt sich auch “Die sprechende Welt” und zeigt sich als reine Sprach-Community. Ziel ist es, Freundschaften mit Leuten auf der ganzen Welt zu schließen und sich gegenseitig beim Lernen zu helfen.

Prinzip: Der eine kann deutsch und der andere kann z.B. portugiesisch ->gemeinsam hilft und ergänzt man sich.

Das Motto: “Teile dein Wissen”. Man kann sich auch Podcasts anhören oder Videolektionen anschauen. Dort erklären Nutzer die Feinheiten ihrer Muttersprache. .

Im virtuellen Klassenzimmer bieten professionelle Online-Lehrer (teils kostenpflichtige!) Kurse an. Hier gibts vor allem Grammatik und Schriftsprache steht auf dem Plan. Probleme liegen in der schlechten Strukturierung . Außerdem ist es nur für Anfänger mit guten Vorkenntnissen sowie Fortgeschrittene geeignet. Als kompletter Anfänger hat mans schwer.

Proponuję inną ciekawą stronę do nauki języków Palabea. To kolejny serwis pomagający nam w nauce języków obcych i nawiązywaniu znajomości. Pamiętam komunistyczne czasy, kiedy pisało się listy do różnych szkół w ZSRR (Związek Socjalistycznych Republik Radzieckich) w nadziei na zawarcie znajomości. Wystarczyło przykładowe imię, numer szkoły i miasto. Odpowiedzi nadchodziły za dwa tygodnie. Przyjemnie było otrzymać trzydzieście listów dziennie. Najpierw otwierałam te grubsze, zawierające kolorowe widokówki, znaczki itp. Listonosz się złościł. “Piszą i piszą te ruskie”- mówił. Ale muszę przyznać, że zawarłam prawdziwe przyjaźnie trwające do dziś. Czyż to nie jest piękne? Dziś nie musicie czekać tygodniami na list. Można błyskawicznie nawiązać kontakt i poznać ludzi. Ale czy to będzie przyjaźń? Czas pokaże.

This may sound a little like an advertisement or some such, but rest assured, that is very far from my intention. Sometimes you might wonder a convenient form to learn languages without going through the traditional way of going to physical classes with the high cost. Come the online world. And it is quite different yet exciting as well, learning through a network such as the Internet.

Enter Palabea. It can be found at http://www.palabea.net. I have been a member of this community for a few months now. I can say the website is relatively new with a really nice look and feel. Do take a tour of what I think is a promising environment for language students.

The idea behind Palabea, I believe, is that it does not have the traditional curriculum like physical classes do. Rather, users will leverage on one another’s skill to learn new languages. Say that you want to learn German, and you speak Malay. Then you may look for a German-speaking friend on the network who may also want to learn Malay. So you can exchange messages (most probably by using English, since many people speak it) and teach one another. Of course, the biggest drawback to this is that most of the time, you do not even know where to start. You are not a linguistic academician. But it does make for an interesting conversation, and you get to make new friends in an environment that is unlike a teacher-student nature.

You can have your own profile on the network where you can list down the languages you speak, the languages you want to learn, your proficiency level. You can also upload videos, photos, and presentations of the language you want to teach. Hence come the classroom. If you can spare the time to teach others, you may want to enroll for virtual classrooms that allow people to learn from the tutorials you prepare – through the use of videos would be effective enough. On the other hand, you can also join classrooms as well. There are many, many classrooms from what I gather, some active, some inactive – you have to see and feel which one is right. Often, like I mention above, there are no traiditional curriculum, but some users are very good enough in their presentation of the languages that you can learn a certain language’s simple gestures easily.

One further note, the website does offer professional education services via the actual courses that they offer, and also through the use of partners. Of course, this comes with certain price tags. I have not tried any of those so I cannot exactly make any comment on it.

If you want to become a true polyglot, you need to use different methods of study. Talking, reading and listening may eventually pay off, but the difficult part often lies in real conversation with native speakers of a given language. So, just a tip here, Palabea is a decent website devoted to making connections between language students.

While not having the feeling of a perfect site it’s good for making connections and finding material, and it should also be said that the site is still in beta which means it will get better. Don’t miss out on the chance to pick up a few spare languages while you are young!

On Primatology.net, I just blogged about some unethical marketing tactics by Palabea.com that I want you to be aware of. Palabea is a startup social networking site with something like 50,000 users. There are some press reports circulating the wires promising Palabea will provide users with an opportunity to talk with “Albert,” a cyber chimp who has a Facebook profile. They are using the “Albert, the CyberChimp” fanbase to leverage growth in their site and generate revenue.

In that post, I address how the principle investigator, John Marlowe is fake. I also talk about how the institutions and publications are also fake. A founder of Palabea is the registered owner of CyberChimps.org, the online platform of the Cyber Chimp spin machine. Furthermore, the photos of “Albert” are doctored images of Ayumu, a real chimp, who is studied to understand primate cognition. Here are two examples:

I have no interest in slamming down Palabea. But I do not want misleading marketing to affect the public’s understanding of primatology. There is some honest primate cognition research out there, experiments that explore non-human language capabilities. This sort of hyped up fake stuff jeopardizes the scientific process and the integrity of primatology; it needs to be regulated… Palabea’s marketing will confuse the public by establishing fake institutions, projects, individuals, and “information.” I really don’t want this misinformation to spread to the mainstream press.

In order to prevent this poor attempt at viral marketing from spreading further, I’ve submitted my Primatology.net post to Digg. Please digg this news up and let others know about it.

One other way to help out is to add Albert the CyberChimp as a friend on Facebook and report the fake profile. I would do it myself, but “Albert” banned me from being his friend after I published the Primatology.net post! It is against Facebook’s Terms of Service (under the User Conduct section) to have fake profiles, and Albert’s is no-where-close to real.

“In addition, you agree not to use the Service or the Site to: … impersonate any person or entity, or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent yourself, your age or your affiliation with any person or entity;”

John Marlowe, complete with an faux-array of primate related publications, has put out a press release announcing that a chimp he’s worked with, “Albert,” has ventured into the wonderful world of online social networking sites with his very own Facebook account.

You can request to become friends with “Albert.” I did, and along with 263 other people, am friends with “Albert.” (UPDATE: they removed and banned me from being friends with Albert after I posted this) You can also check out his second, more specialized profile on Palabea, another site dedicated to networking with people from different linguistic backgrounds.

Unless it was “Albert” that wrote the press release, I believe Marlowe or at least the person behind is to blame, hyping this up big time, writing that,

“With the help of specially designed software that recognises sign language (ASL), and a “chimp proof” adapted touch-screen, these leading scientists recently announced that the four apes can communicate using more than 1000 symbols, adapted to the most popular features of the online social network.

They can chat online with their best friends from around the world, write text messages, and even upload their favourite profile pictures. Albert gang has become very popular among Facebook’s users.”

He also writes that “Albert” is the first ape to join Facebook, the largest online social network. Well humans are apes, and Facebook is full of humans, so “Albert” is not the first ape to join Facebook. Furthermore, Myspace is the largest online social network.

I’ve done some sleuthing to figure out more about John Marlowe and his work with “Albert,” and I can’t find much information. The only profile of John Marlowe, as a primatologist, seems to be the only the source of the hype engine, Marlowe’s one-post-blog, CyberChimps. On CyberChimps, Marlowe says he has a,

“BA and PhD in Psychology and Biology from Stanford University. Upon completion of his PhD, he joined the Biology staff at the University of Northern Oregon.”

I can’t seem to find any reference to the University of Northern Oregon. There is not a website, which I find ironic. On other pages, the university is called Northern Oregon University (NOU). The only references to NOU I can find are fictional stories that mention it.

Oregon is a state in the United States, but John Marlowe’s very own Facebook profile says he lives in London. Furthermore, Marlowe indicates, “Albert” is at the Yorke’s Institute, which seems to be another fictional location… the only reference to Yorke Institutes I can find is a professional school that train people in hospitality and cooking.

I did a WHOIS on CyberChimps.org and it is owned by Sebastian Schkudlara, of Palabea.

The last clincher, and the most convincing evidence that we are being duped, are the photographs of Albert. Several of the portraits of Albert are actually of different individuals. And the screen shots circulating of Albert using Facebook are photoshopped screen grabs of Ayumu the chimp. If you wanna check it out for yourself, look at this video I shared of Ayumu’s cognitive abilities in January of this year.

With fake scientific publications, no real institutions, links between CymberChimp and Palabea, and above all poorly done Photoshop work, this all smells like a poor attempt to go viral, headed by Palabea. I know all’s fair in startups and marketing and is a cleaver tactic to brand your new product, but there is something at stake here… People do fall for crap like this and publicity stunts like this jeopardizes honest research in primate cognition, and the scientific process. I just hope the mainstream press doesn’t fall for this crap and further perpetuate the problem.

Ora nell’era del web 2.0 e dei Social Media esiste un nuovo metodo: Palabea. Mi sono appena iscritto e ho visto che ha molte cose intesresanti tra cui una chat per rendere più interattivo l’apprendimento.
