What do Christians Celebrate on Palm Sunday?

On Palm Sunday Christians celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, the week before his death and resurrection. For many Christian churches, Palm Sunday, often referred to as “Passion Sunday,” marks the beginning of Holy Week, which concludes on Easter Sunday. The Bible reveals that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds greeted him with waving palm branches, and by covering his path with palm branches. Immediately following this great time of celebration in the ministry of Jesus, he begins his journey to the cross.

The biblical account of Palm Sunday can be found in Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; and John 12:12-19.

MANILA, Philippines—Filipinos value Holy Week so much that they call it “Mahal na Araw” to symbolize how much they revere the commemoration of Jesus Christ’s final moments.

“To call something mahal means it is near your heart. The days unfolding are so dear to the hearts of every Filipino,” said Fr. Genaro Diwa, head of the liturgical affairs ministry of the Archdiocese of Manila.

Holy Week is the series of Church observances commemorating the various events in the final days of Christ’s life—His Passion and the events which immediately led up to it. It is the week which precedes the greatest of all Christian feasts, the Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

It begins on Palm Sunday, commemorating Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, and ends in the three sacred days of Holy Week.

Maundy Thursday, derived from Jesus’ “mandate” to love one another as he loves us, also celebrates Jesus’ institution of the sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Ordination. Good Friday commemorates Christ’s crucifixion and death and Holy Saturday is the final night before the Feast of the Resurrection, which begins at the Easter Vigil.

“Palaspas” or “Palm Sunday” is a moveable feast in the Christian Calendar, u

“Palaspas” or “Palm Sunday” is a moveable feast in the Christian Calendar, usually falls one Sunday before “The Sunday of Resurrection” or “Easter”. The Catholic Church always celebrates this on any of the 35 dates between March 15 and April 18. Indeed it is a feast/fast which has no exact celebration day each year for it’s always dependent to the Easter Sunday which is randomly calculated according to a certain complex formula.

“Jesus Christ enters Jerusalem..”

Biblically, this feast commemorates the Triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into the sacred place of Jerusalem in the days before his “Passion” (and later on his Resurrection), where he was rejoicingly welcomed by the people waving their palm leaves in the air.

This year, the “Palm Sunday” is celebrated today “April 1″ and i had my first ever “Palm Sunday Mass” of my entire life hehe. I’m really not THAT religious at all, though i do believe in God and His existence, i’ve always stood before that old saying, “only fools don’t believe in God”. I am certainly very vocal on the wrongdoings and “kabuktutan” of this very religion that i belong (Roman Catholic) and it steeply pains me to see how “catholicism” stunted the growth of the Filipino society (and our minds as well) in many ways, but what got me into this, is actually the experience that only this event could give and besides, this Catholic Celebration is also a part of our culture, a part of us being “Filipinos”.

“with Ate Tin before we had the mass”

“.. the palms”

“.. the vendors”

I was with my officemate/friend “Ate Tin” (though she’s just about my age, i still call her “Ate”.. i’m just really modest i guess hehe.. ^_^) and before we had the mass we first bought ourselves some “Palaspas” (Palm Leaves) and we kinda had a hard time buying for the vendors does have quite an array of decors to choose from, as IN.

“Sta. Ana Church, this wasn’t what i was expecting to see, look how few the peeps are”

I was surprised actually to see the output of people who came to hear the mass. I guess over the years, the significance for us Filipinos of such religious gatherings declines for some obvious reasons and i’d rather not talk about it here. Well anyways, i just picked a very simple yet elegant palm leaves with a japanese paper-ornamented flower as its centerpiece which by the way is hued in lovely fuchsia.

While we were inside the marvelous “Sta. Ana Church” (this was Ate Tin’s first time in our beautiful church, so being the frustrated historian that i am.. i shared to her bits of history about this church and that actually made me feel good in an abstract way.. ^_^) I silently stood still for a while and prayed to God to grant me the will to push further and to strengthen me more, enough to make a wise decision and clarify my mind from all the troubles that’s been eating me lately.

“my Aunt Marietta (r.i.p) used to hang these leaves on our main door like this”

And so this mass officially starts my holy week, i don’t really have plans to go out or something except that i plan to have a tour in “Intramuros”.. nor do i have plans to make a vow as my “penitent” for this lenten season.. i guess i just have to be nicer and put my thoughts together.
