<title><![CDATA[Anouar Brahem, or How I Love ECM]]></title>

<p>Walking into the &#8220;World Music&#8221; section of any record store is terrifying. There are awful clichés everywhere–so much of the music is handcrafted to appeal to &#8220;spiritual&#8221; assholes, or housewives that want to appear culturally diverse at their next book club meeting. The last thing I want to hear is sitar over some shitty house beat. On the other hand, sometimes braving the world music section is worth it. I find non-western music fascinating because I know nothing about it; it lets me approach it as a pure consumer, rather than with my own preconceptions of how a guitar should sound, how a pop album should be recorded, how the head should come around in a funk song, or whatever. It is like reading a book without recognizing any of the allusions: only the immediate melodies and sounds matter.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.anouarbrahem.com/" target="_blank">Anouar Brahem</a> is worth braving the World Music section for. He is a Tunisian <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oud" target="_blank">oud (fretless lute)</a> player that is a master of both traditional Arab music and post-jazz stylings.  I&#8217;ve only been exposed to the recordings he has done with <a href="http://www.ecmrecords.com/" target="_blank">ECM Records</a>, but they are amazing. I know that the ECM Records approach has become somewhat of a cliché in itself; sparse, compressionless recordings, art photography covers, simple typography, &#8220;aesthetic&#8221; jazz albums, etc&#8230; populate their catalogue. That being said, the attention to detail that the label brings to <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">world music</span> non-western albums is refreshing.</p>

<p>This song comes from Khomsa, an album of Brahem&#8217;s compositions played by an eclectic mix of jazz musicians. Apparently most of the album&#8217;s songs were originally for film scores, though I don&#8217;t know which film this song is for [Does anyone? I'd love to know. -BP]. This song features my favourite drummer, Jon Christensen, as well as amazingly busy yet unobtrusive bass playing by Palle Danielsson. Richard Galliano has the surprisingly gentle solo on accordion, while François Couturier&#8217;s piano holds everything together. This has an amazing melody; if <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0211915/" target="_blank">Amélie</a> had been set in Tunis, this could have been one of the sad themes.</p>

<p>From his new album, The Astounding Eyes of Rita, this is a more traditional (not that I&#8217;d know), gently swung song. It is plodding, but hopeful, and definitely catchy. The playing isn&#8217;t as good as on previous albums. The drumming especially is weak, but the electric bass falls somewhat flat here as well. This isn&#8217;t just coming from my love of Jon Christensen, the drums  too often sounds like a college drum circle. Despite that, this is a beautiful song: the melody floats, and the the bass clarinet compliments Brahem&#8217;s playing well. My favourite part of this song is the major/minor toying around with the lead riff.</p>
<p>Hope you all enjoy it. Buy the albums and put them on while you&#8217;re trying to seduce that white chick with dreadlocks and the Arabic script tattoos. No seriously I&#8217;m kidding, please don&#8217;t do that, they&#8217;re amazing songs.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Eje Thelin svensk jazztrombonist (1938-90) var en ledande kreatör inom svensk och internationell jazzmusik. Jag upptäckte honom under tidigt 70-tal, Thelin hade då redan varit etablerad på allvar sedan sent 50-tal. Han började som dixielandmusiker, för att tämligen omgående övergå till modernare jazz. Han spelade då med bl.a. Lars Gullin och Putte Wickman. I mitten av 60-talet, ägnade han sig i någon mening åt avantgardejazz. Han ledde en egen &#8220;pianolös&#8221; grupp, med den franske saxofonisten Barney Wilen och en ung Palle Danielsson på kontrabas. De framträdde bl.a. på Gröna Lund. En liknande konstellation på dagens Gröna Lund vore närmast utopisk.</p>
<p>Eje Thelin jobbade sedermera som lärare i improvisation vid en musikhögskola i Österrike. Efter återkomsten till Sverige ledde han ånyo egna grupper. Företrädesvis spelade han med yngre musiker, t.ex. pianisten Harald Svensson och basisten Bruno Råberg. Under namnet Eje Thelin Group,  gjorde man en del uppmärksammade konserter. Jag kommer ihåg en teveinspelning från 1974, då E.T. Group spelade tillsammans med den engelske barytonsaxofonisten John Surman.</p>
<p>Karakteristiskt för Thelin var att han under 70- och 80-talen, använde sig av vid denna tid &#8211; för jazzmusiken &#8211; ovanliga taktarter. 5/4, 7/4, 7/8, etc.. Dessa taktarter hade då sedan flera decennier används inom konstmusiken. En viktig ingrediens blev också rockmusiken. Trumslagaren levererade ofta ett häftigt rockbeat.</p>
<p>Thelin komponerade också en del för större ensembler under 80-talet. Några verk för radiojazzgruppen. Jag antar att han var autodidakt, vad beträffar orkestrering och trots en del hantverksmässiga brister i skrivandet , lyckades han ofta i sina kompositioner presentera sina okonventionella , komplexa och spännande idéer. Hans skrivande för större ensembler, var dock inte i paritet med hans improvisatoriska förmåga på sitt instrument &#8211; trombonen.</p>

Dozens were picked up at a stoop sale somewhere near Union St., manhandled into recycled plastic bags between 5th and 6th Avenues in Park Slope. Here are ten of the most interesting.</p>

<p>Para los que vivimos los 80 o emergimos musicalmente de ellos, fue complicado encontrar alternativas que encajasen con una sensibilidad más personal, si se quiere diferente de un sentir generacional o popular, populista diría yo. Era aquel un momento musical en que el rock y todas sus variantes junto con el punk arrasaban en todos los pueblos y capitales, y formar parte de una tendencia era casi imprescindible para lograr cierta integración social (rockabillys, moods, heavys, rastas&#8230; lo que quisieras). Las modas eran más definidas y fuertes si cabe que hoy, y tenían un componente muy importante de conciencia de clase.</p>
<p>En ese contexto tan agitado y belicoso, el sello discográfico ECM se convirtió para algunos en salvavidas estético, oasis para el oído y brújula que colocaba al norte de Europa en un lugar importante dentro de una nueva corriente dentro y fuera del jazz. De la mano de <strong>Manfred Eicher</strong>, fundador, ideólogo y productor de la mayoría de los discos, desde 1969 se dedicó a grabar a artistas que por no ser su propuesta convencional, etiquetable o fácilmente explicable para un sello mas claramente englobado en un género, no encontraban su lugar en ninguna otra discográfica. De ahí que artistas de la talla de Pat Metheny, Keith Jarret, The Art Ensamble of Chicago y muchos otros, que desde dentro del jazz apuntaban a músicas más abiertas y que no tenían el swing en su raíz, terminaran por cruzar el Atlántico y recalaran en Munich para grabar sus discos, donde ECM tiene su cuartel general.</p>
<p>Un buen ejemplo del sonido ECM, es este You never know, firmado por el batería Peter Erskine (aún hoy uno de los baterías en activo más respetados), al que acompañan el bajista Palle Danielsson y el pianista John Taylor, tres de los artistas más importantes y proliferos del sello. No es new age, no es jazz, no es pop&#8230; creo que la mejor definición es que es puramente música.</p>
<p>El disco se abre con New old age, una joya de tema, en el que el piano juega con un motivo rítmicamente reiterativo para crear una atmósfera de aire impresionista, en verdad delicada y de gran belleza, donde el bajo y la batería han de desarrollar nuevas formas de acompañar para no romper el clima. No es esta la única joya del disco, que pasa por diversas fases musicales, acercándose más al jazz por momentos y alejándose en otros, habitando en un lugar propio y donde se habla con una voz muy particular.</p>
<p>Volveré a hablar sobre ECM, pues no me cabe aquí y ahora todo lo que este pequeño e independiente sello a conseguido, navegando en un terreno casi abandonado, sin singles en cuarenta principales, con una música a veces experimental, otras tremendamente hermosa, dando cabida a la música clásica que nadie quería grabar, extendiendo su influencia a Sudamérica y a Norteamérica gracias a dos sub-sellos (Carmo y Watt respectivamente), donde un buen número de artistas tuvieron la posibilidad de realizar trabajos con cierta continuidad, y de crear música que no hubiera podido materializarse de otra manera, quizás.</p>
<p>Solo me queda estar agradecido, porque me ha dado mucho, y me consta que no soy el único. No seremos muchos, pero no estamos solos.</p>
<p>Trago recomendado: una buena taza de café, mañanero!</p>
