Kekurangannya keypad QWERTY tidak sebaik sebelumnya, fingerprint magnet, menggunakan micro-USB bukan mini-USB yang lebih umum digunakan, serta kamera hanya 2MB.

5. Nokia E63

Nokia E63 memiliki kemampuan SMS dan email yang kompeten, tapi pendahulunya E71 lebih baik dan menawarkan lebih banyak fitur. I’m really considering buying this phone. My phone is olllllllddddd. Flip phones are just old period. I keep saying I don’t really need a new phone because as long as I can text, I’m good. BUT I want something new. Sprint has a new phone coming out on the 6th, but I’m not trying to spend that much. It’s either this or the HTC Touch Pro, but the HTC is a little bulky to me so I think I’m going to go with this. I’ll decide by the end of this week.

Troubled times for the former leader of the smart-phone industry continue.

Palm’s new Pre receives accolades, but isn’t scheduled to ship until closer to June (the official target is the first half of the year).

In anticipation, the company’s present smart phones are tanking and the stopgap Treo Pro is late. That means Palm is burning money to stay alive: between $95 million and $100 million in the third quarter ended Feb. 27.

That will leave it will between $215 million and $220 million in the bank, not enough of a cushion to satisfy management.

On Tuesday, Palm said it would raise more money to conduct the Pre launch and weather the downturn. It also said third-quarter sales were roughly three-fifths of what they were expected to be: between $85 million and $90 million compared with the $157.8 million Wall Street had projected.

In this environment, the options aren’t plentiful. Here’s the plan: to exercise some of the shares underlying the Series C preferred stock owned by Elevation Partners.
In other words: convert up to 49 percent the Series C convertible preferred warrants Elevation received for a $100 million investment into common stock and sell them on the market. If they sold at $7, Palm would raise $67.5 million. (Thanks to Barron’s Tech Trader Daily for the details.)

“As expected, we’ve got a difficult transition period to work through,” said Palm CEO Ed Colligan.

After pioneering a revolution in mobile devices like PDAs and smart phones, Palm, as of recent times, has found itself more and more out of the market due to stiff competition. Currently it is ranked fourth after the likes of Apple, Research In Motion(RIM) and Windows Mobile. All that is pretty much set to change if what Palm showed in CES lives up to its promise. And there is a high chance that it would.

Enter the Palm Pre. This is Palm’s latest entrant in the land of mobile devices, more specifically the smart phone segment. This segment is dominated by Apple and RIM. Even though Palm did have some success with its Centro, Treo and Treo Pro lines of phones, it was nowhere near to regaining the coveted leader position. With the Pre, Palm is pretty well set to pose a challenge that is serious enough to even topple the revered Apple iPhone.

If looks could kill or rather dethrone the iPhone, the Palm Pre has it. If functions and performance can poach users, the Pre has that. If coolness is such an important factor that entire cults grow around that, the Palm Pre is well equipped. The new design features a touch screen interface along with a slide out full keyboard. It sports Palm’s latest operating system the WebOS. The combination is stupendous.

The Pre is not only a pretty looking phone, but packs a mean punch too. There is innovation at its best coupled with legendary usability. Here’s a look at a few innovations that the Pre comes with.

Wi-Fi, GPS and email are standard on the Pre. The new Synergy system also allows a user to see all the conversations with a certain contact in a chat style. The universal search feature allows searching across contacts, Google, applications and even Wikipedia. Pretty cool, huh!

The Pre treats each running application as an activity card. Multiple applications can run in parallel and a user can switch between these running instances or activity cards with the mere flick of a finger. No longer do you have to close your email application to browse a web site. All notifications, like the ones for new messages, appear at the bottom of the screen and does not interrupt the user’s current activity. Quite nifty I say.

The calendar application in the Pre can show a combined logical view of calendars stored in Outlook, Google Calendar and Facebook. Also if a single contact is stored in different applications, they can all be linked together.

The browser is full featured and fast. It supports full HTML and has the now ubiquitous zoom and pan functions. Also all the applications installed on the phone are constantly updated via the internet. This gets rid of the rather dull “Update now” function.

Another innovative feature is the Touchstone wireless charging station with which the Pre can be recharged. The Pre attaches to the Touchstone device through magnets and remains in position without any cables or wires connecting the two. The phone can be used while charging.

Der Palm Treo Pro macht es dem Anwender schon schwer: da versteckt sich erst der Softreset-Button hinter Stift und Akkuabdeckung, und dann steht der Anwender im Regen, wenn er ein komplettes Rücksetzen des Gerätes durchführen will: Der Hardreset funktioniert auch anders als bei anderen Geräten:

1.) Schaltet das Gerät ein
2.) Drückt die “Ende”-Taste (die ganz rechte, rote Taste) und haltet sie
3.) Drückt gleichzeitig den Resetknopf (auf der Rückseite des Gerätes unter der Akkuabdeckung/dem Stift)

Auf die Nachfrage, ob alle Daten gelöscht werden sollen, drückt das Steuerkreuz nach oben.

Vorsicht: Ein Hardreset löscht alle Daten und Programme vom Gerät und setzt es in den Auslieferungszustand!

Was schliesst Ihr daraus? Richtig… ich habe die Geduld verloren, mich von diesem ohne Frage technisch und optisch guten Gerät noch verführen zu lassen: Er packt mich einfach nicht. Schade drum, der Kollege Samaschke freut sich dafür über ein Zweitgerät…

Was ist bloss los? Es mag meine spezielle “Situation” sein, der ich mit einer Vertragsverlängerung bei vodafone dran bin und darauf warte, eines der neuen, interessanten Windows Mobile-Geräte wie das Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 oder den Palm Treo Pro subventioniert zu nehmen.

Unabhängig davon aber: Der Treo Pro, lange von Palm selbst immer wieder mit dem Verweis auf vodafone beworben, ist auf dem Markt, aber vodafone weiss noch von nichts (das Gerät steht immer noch als “Bald erhältlich” in einem separaten Bereich der Webseite). Dito das XPERIA X1: Der 30. September sollte der Tag der Tage sein, mittlerweile ist es Mitte Oktober und weder O2 noch vodafone haben das Gerät im Programm (auch hier wieder “Bald erhältlich”), geschweige denn ein anderer Online-Händler.

Es nervt… ich bin schon jemand, dem die “Vorfreude” recht wichtig ist, aber wenn sich Termine so hinter dem Horizont verstecken, dann ist die auch nur noch relativ. Zumal zumindest die Verschiebung des X1 für mich eine Warnhinweis ist, der auf Probleme in den abschliessenden Test schliessen lässt… da das Gerät eben auch in keinem anderen Channel verfügbar ist.

Hach… ist das so schwer, ein Gerät zeitgerecht, in der entsprechenden Qualität auf den Markt zu bringen?

Meinen Treo Pro habe ich im freien Handel gekauft, meine Vertragsverlängerung mit einem Touch Diamond abgeschlossen und das X! kann mir gestohlen bleiben… bis es auf dem Markt ist…

Nun ist gerade mein Palm Treo Pro hier angekommen, und ein wenig hatte ich die Hoffnung, dass der zumindest mit dem NN7 zusammen laufen würde. Hier ist der Effekt allerdings noch ein wenig extremer: Die Software installiert sich problemlos, allerdings blockiert sie das gesamte System, wenn man sie zu starten versucht.

Manchmal hilt ein Ausschalten des Geräts, oft geht selbst das nicht und es bleibt nur ein Softreset/eine Entnahme des Akkus. Ebenso verhält es sich übrigens mit dem Samsung Omnia i900…

Several weeks after the official unveiling, Palm has released its latest Windows Mobile-based smartphone, the Treo Pro, in the United States.

Palm Treo ProThis device is being sold unlocked and directly to U.S. consumers, rather than through a wireless carrier, for $550. It is now in stock at Palm’s web store, and customers who pre-ordered one should soon receive a notice that it has shipped.

In Europe, the Treo Pro is being offered through Vodafone, who has not yet released it.

More About the Palm Treo Pro

This smartphone has the design that’s become a hallmark of the Treo line, a candybar shape with 320-by-320-pixel touchscreen above a QWERTY thumb-keyboard.

It runs Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional on a 400 MHz processor from Qualcomm, and comes with the standard suite of productivity applications.

The Pro is a quad-band GSM device with tri-band UMTS/HSDPA support, which means it can be used for both phone calls and 3G wireless access around the world. In addition, it has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Other features include an external microSD card slot for additional storage, a built-in GPS receiver, and a 2.0 MPx camera.

First impressions are everything – and on the outside, Palm have hit the ground at a lightning speed. It’s sleek black exterior play host to a massive screen, a full QWERTY keyboard and several other features which (if you didn’t know any better) look like they’ve been taken straight from the most popular Blackberries and the World Dominating iPhone. Now I hear what you’re thinking because I thought it too: Why have stalwart giant Palm copied other manufacturers with their new Treo Pro? The answer: because it looks fantastic.

Palm and their crack team of accountant/designers have sat down and actually asked themselves: “What do consumers want in their phones?” When it came to the heading of style, they took the silent/standby keys from a Blackberry Pearl, a Widescreen body like the Blackberry Bold, Smartphone shortcut keys resembling Nokia’s E51, and a sleek iPhone like design on the back with the word “palm” emblazoned in silver. The iPhoneyness continues even when you open the box! I almost didn’t want to unpack it! Palm found all these features, recognized their popularity and said, “Yeah, why not us too?”, and dressed up their Prepaid frontrunner: The Palm Centro. It’s almost like they’ve put the Centro on a diet and given it a fancy suit to wear. To criticise gorgeous design inclusions such as these would be like criticising someone for looking too much like Scarlett Johansson…

Extreme Makeover aside however: This handset is loaded with everything to keep a user in touch and on the right track: HSDPA (for fast internet on selected carriers), GPS and Wi-Fi, all nestled into a sleek Windows Mobile 6.1 interface (that’s the newest one for those playing at home). It’s also a Blue Tick Smartphone – the first of its kind – on Telstra’s Next G network. It has the barebones Office suite that rolls hand in hand with 6.1 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote) and a split modified version of Outlook that separates the calendar and Email functions. A nice inclusion.

Getting around the handset is simple as most Palms are and it does the name proud. The camera (2megapixel) has a really sharp liveview feature – making everything look crisp and fresh. My only criticism is that it’s lacking the fast shutter speed most camera users are hoping for – further proof that accountants rule the way designers work. Need more proof? The Stylus holds the killing blow. For a semi-widescreen handset, users expect to be able to tap the screen from one side to the other without relocating their hand. That’s why it’s a smartphone: it’s cleverly designed and operated. The problem here is that the stylus is a solid, non-extendable piece of what feels to be shiny plastic which is too short for the screen and the users hand. I can safely say that because I know I have the smallest hands and fingers of most people I come across. It’s a safe bet see. The size issues continue on the QWERTY keyboard; while it’s wider and more spaced than its prepaid counterpart, I had issues with pushing one button at a time. As such, I was slowed to a crawl when inputting text. So Palm gives us a catch22 in heels and a suit: use the cramped keys or the stylus which leaves much to be desired. You can use fingers on the screen but you need a considerable amount of force to operate it (for a screen).

It might just be me but I think that style and design shouldn’t take a back seat to usability and functionality. If you can’t use the handset it just becomes another fashion dongle for you to show off to your friends, and while Palm are finally cracking the heights of technological sexy handsets, there seems like there’s something missing. Now that Palm are finally getting the hang of the design of handsets they know what works and they’re running with it – integrating it with WIndows Mobile 6.1 for a seamless user experience that enables both business and consumer customers to never be out of touch with their world.
