Most ladies’ shopping addiction is to clothes, jewelry, etc. My addiction is to buying compute

Most ladies’ shopping addiction is to clothes, jewelry, etc. My addiction is to buying computer stuff, gadgets, electronics, etc.

The economic downturn has provided me with a new foolproof method for justifying my penchant for buying electronic gadgets..helping the economy! It’s obvious that spending helps the economy, so I’m glad to step up to the plate and do my part.

Here’s the lineup of my new gadgets…

DeLorme PN-40 GPS

The DeLorme PN-40 is my new handheld GPS. I had DeLorme’s Bluetooth GPS, the BT-20, before this. I used it with my Palm TX, which ran DeLorme’s Street Atlas handheld version. That setup technically worked all right, but there were a lot of negatives to it, I’ll spare you the details.

So I thought about a new GPS, primarily for geocaching, but also for some road navigation, finding points of interest, and “tracking” during a trip, so I could take the “track” file and then geotag the multitude of photos I take during road trips.

A handheld model could fill all of these needs, and I chose the DeLorme PN-40. An added bonus on the PN-40 is the ability to have multiple types of maps (layers) on the device. One can have the map file, topo, USGS, nautical maps, aerial imagery, and custom stuff as well. This GPS comes with DeLorme’s excellent mapping software, Topo 7, but for a $100 upgrade, XMap can be used to import any custom images, maps, satellite photos, etc. I can create a very intricate route, transfer it to the DeLorme, and use it to navigate during my trip.

The cool thing with this device is that I can georeference old maps and transfer them to the device. I can then be out traveling and use the GPS viewing an old map. Why, you ask? This would be very helpful to identify old alignments of US Highways, auto trails, etc. If Only I had this when Pat and I assisted Thomas Repp of AMERICAN ROAD magazine with researching an old auto trail in Indiana, the Ben Hur Route.

Garmin Nuvi

Garmin nuvi 200

Well, even with having the awesome DeLorme GPS, I found that it wasn’t the best for street navigation when I was trying to look for a place “on the fly” and navigate there…fair, but not as responsive as I’d hoped. Wrong turn? Forget it…took too long to recalculate. So, I opted to also procure a Garmin Nuvi 200. Nice little device. It’s a more bare bones model, and doesn’t do multipoint routes (I think I can add one via point), no software to create routes, doesn’t speak street names (but of course, it displays the street name). It’s quite a nice gadget! I still love the capability of the DeLorme to transfer a route that I created on my map software, so there’s good reason to have both devices. Now only if DeLorme could make a street-routing device that functions like the PN-40 (integration with Street Atlas or XMap, waypoints, routes, etc.) but with added features like lightning-fast response for street navigation, spoken turn by turn directions, faster search capability, easier addition of large amounts of points of interest (that would be really sweet!) so I could load POI Factory files in no time, like I can on the Garmin.

Samsung Epix

I have been a Palm devotee for some time. First, I had a Palm IIIxe:

Then, I moved up to the color Palm Z22:

Lastly, I had the Palm TX.

I was very initially enthused about the Palm TX, and had high hopes: high resolution color screen, more memory, better processor…and wi-fi! Alas, this device wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Frequent resets, wi-fi was a joke, and the worst part…a faulty battery status indicator. At first, I thought the device had trouble holding a charge (well, I think it does, somewhat…because it does drain faster than one would expect, even when not used for several days!). But the real problem is that at any point, the battery indicator shows a full charge, when in fact, the battery is ready to fully discharge. The solution, was probably just to charge it every day, but that device was getting frustrating. It was time to move on, and perhaps look into a Smartphone or something.

This led me to the Samsung Epix.

3G, phone, Internet, wi-fi, organizer, contacts, etc. So far so good. It has its quirks, to be sure…but it’s pretty good.

Nikon D700 DSLR

I started out in high school with a Nikon EM, an entry level Nikon SLR, evidently marketed as an easy to use “SLR Camera for Women.” Hilarious! It was actually not a fully manual SLR at all! It was an aperture-priority only camera (huh…so funny in retrospect!!). Rather than manually adjusting both the aperture and shutter, one would only adjust the aperture ring on the lens, allowing the camera to select the correct shutter speed for the correct exposure. But since that was my first and only SLR experience, I was clueless.

Sadly, I no longer have this fine little camera. I sure wish I did, though. It would be nice to play around with it a little, for nostalgic reasons. I really liked it alot! **UPDATE: After reading this paragraph, my husband procured a working Nikon EM for my birthday!! So, I will get a chance to play around with one!

Nikon EM

Concurrently with the Nikon EM, I owned a series of point and shoot 35 mm cameras. Though unremarkable and forgettable, there was one that worked very well. Since it was forgettable overall, I don’t remember what kind it was, but it worked well for a point and shoot. It too, disappeared from my life along with the Nikon EM (but that’s another story!).

Several more point and shoots later, in 2003, I decided to go digital. While not a pioneer in adopting digital, I certainly am never one to shy away from new technology (unless finances prohibit…). I knew I didn’t want a point and shoot, but I didn’t go with an SLR either at that point. I opted for a camera with manual adjustments, but without interchangeable lenses, and selected the Sony Mavica CD-500. I liked it alot. It used relatively inexpensive media, mini CDs. Exposure modes of Auto, Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual, and some scene modes. 5 MP. It made decent movie files, too.

Sony Mavica CD500

In hindsight, here’s what I didn’t like: shutter lag. Unbearable. Useless at the Indy 500! For stationary subjects, all was well, but there were some action shots I would have liked to take! Startup: slooooooow…had to be at least 10 seconds. Maximum 1/1000 shutter speed. Aperture range of 2.0 to 8.0. Maximum ISO of 400. Zoom equivalent of 34-102 mm. It was also painfully slow writing data to the mini-CD’s. However, with this said, at first, the camera suited me quite well. It helped me learn about settings, manual adjustments, and so forth. Of course, the greatest benefit to digital is that I could look at my images immediately, and tweak the settings to get the right exposure, depth of field, subject motion, etc. The Sony Mavica CD500 served me quite well for three years. But I outgrew it, and was tiring of the shutter lag and slow performance. So, I opted for a Digital SLR and chose the Nikon D50.

Nikon D50

This camera had 6 MP, ISO ranges from 200 – 1600, the same exposure modes (P, M, A, S + scene selections and auto), the shutter speed went up to 1/4000! Instant startup time, no shutter lag and a host of lens selections. I added a Nikon SB-800 Speedlight to my arsenal, along with a Promaster 18-200 mm lens. I liked having one all-around lens for most purposes without having to switch lenses all the time. Using this camera greatly increased my photography skills, and I am pleased with having owned it.

The Nikon D50 served me very well for just over 3 years. Though nothing was wrong with it, and I swore I wouldn’t upgrade yet, the lure of the latest and greatest Nikon, along with an terrific offer I couldn’t refuse, led me to an upgrade. I thought about the Nikon D90, but that wasn’t enough of an upgrade for me at this rate. I pored over Ken Rockwell’s excellent site, reading all of the details about each one. The Nikon D3 was out of my price range, so I opted for the next best thing. Nikon’s very advanced consumer model, second-from-the top, D700.

Nikon D700

This camera is just terrific! I can’t and won’t provide a highly technical review (see Ken Rockwell’s site for that), but there are so many great things about this camera. First, it’s a full frame sensor (FX), so it’s not the smaller, DX size. This allows for wider shots, more light sensitivity, larger prints, and probably a ton of other reasons beyond my technical knowledge (or lack thereof). At 12.1 MP, it’s not huge, but short of printing huge billboard size prints, this is more than enough for me and 98% of consumers (in fact, I rather liked the smaller 6 MP files of the D50…). ISO ranges from 100 (LO) to 25,600. This camera is wonderful at higher ISOs, with far less noise than on a DX camera. Makes it so easy to take better photos in low light! 1/8000 shutter speed, and 5 FPS. There is an optional battery pack that can boost this up to 8FPS, but I’m not a sports professional, so not necessary.

There’s some other cool features I like, such as 51 point autofocus, Active-D lighting, face detection, and much more that I’ll be learning as I get better acquainted with the D700.

I bought Palm TX last April, which is called PDA(Personal Digital Assistant). Palm or Sony Clie (Palm based PDA) was recommended by someone online who has been suffering from ADD(attention deficit disorder).

The PDA is must have tool for ADD or people with attention deficit tendencies in general to help them manage schedules and cluttered notes consolidated in one location, which can put their creative minds in good use an otherwise their aimlessly drifting or disorganised thoughts.

We tend to focus on weakness of others or even our own weakness SO MUCH, we tend to overlook our strengths or of others. I noticed if people have obvious weaknesses in some areas then there also lies compensating strengths in proportions to the size of their weaknesses.

I say this to you because people with attention deficits are often blessed with superior imaginations, creativities, a sense of humour, abilities to hyperfocus on something they love and a high intelligence.

Thomas Edison who was a famous inventor in America was also said to suffer from ADD but he has succeeded because of his strengths were put to use more than his weaknesses- he never managed to complete a formal schooling though.

Our weaknesses especially those from ADD traits can easily overtake our lives and bring us down miserably in a real life. However, strengths can also reign if each of us recognised our strengths and listened to our own inner voice carefully.

There are always hopes to get us out of ruts in almost any situations. Attention deficit people often force themselves in an environment that does not nurture their strengths so weakness suddenly rules our lives again. Don’t let this happen to you.

What we only need is the ‘courage’ to move into ADD friendly surroundings so that our talents are better utilised. If we can stay in ADD friendly environment long enough then we will have a good life. Isn’t it what we all are after? No sound humanbeings volunteers themselves for sufferrings and unhappiness rather those things just happen because we do not understand ourselves enough.

School’s coming up the 25th and I’m almost ready. I got some of my books at the campus bookstore and it wasn’t that pleasant. They only had about a quarter of my books in yet so I went ahead and bought what they had. It turned out to be about $350 but I have about $400 worth on back order. Eep! The woman behind the counter was rather rude as well. One of the books the younger lady had given me didn’t have a rubber band on, and apparently that’s important for some reason? So, I had to go back to get another while the woman waited and apparently repeated things like Where is she? What is she doing? I’m not an idiot, I just walked to the back of the store to get my book, as she told me to! I couldn’t recognize her accent.

Getting past that experience (I’m ordering over the computer from now on. lol) I’m slowly accumulating all my fun little gadgets. I’ve had my cell phone for awhile, which I never use because I’m antisocial or something. lol I’ve gotten a new Ipod classic earlier this summer to replace the one that died last winter. Then, Tuesday I got my great new Palm TX for scheduling and assignments. Plus I need some entertainment for that awful 5 hour gap between classes when I don’t want to waste gas coming home for such a short time. My case should be coming soon so I may post a picture then.

I’m going up to Michigan this weekend to stay in our RV. I haven’t been to our new campground yet, even though we’ve been there almost a year now. My family usually goes every few weeks, but I’ve been staying home. Might as well start getting ready now since we’ll be leaving in a few hours. I’m bringing Lotus Wood to work on.

This is the first time I’ve had much to say on a post. Usually I’m very concise, but maybe I’m just adapting to blogging. Don’t get too used to it.

So I just spent a joyous few hours trying to figure out how to format my 2GB SD card for my Palm TX

So I just spent a joyous few hours trying to figure out how to format my 2GB SD card for my Palm TX and have it work both on my laptop and on the Palm. The Palm will happily format the card itself, and it’ll work just fine inside the Palm, but alas, nowhere else. So then I tried formatting the card on my laptop, both with Ubuntu and with Mac OS X, and then the Palm just wants to format it when I stick it in.

So I dove in deep into the various geeky tools to see what I could do. I tried to repartition the card using
cfdisk /dev/sdb1
but this lovely Palm format creates something that
cfdisk
doesn’t recognize:

FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 0: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder

Using
fdisk
allowed me to see that the partition and the filesystem were marked as
FAT16
, so I could mount it if I told
mount
which filesystem it should see, like this:
mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt/tmp
. So I can mount it ok, but not everything is happy:

[93139.773051] attempt to access beyond end of device
[93139.773067] sdb: rw=0, want=2797588, limit=2011136

Hmm, something is amiss. My guess is that this SD card is slightly bigger than 2GB in actual capacity, and FAT16 has a hard 2GB limit. The Palm is joyfully formatting the whole thing as FAT16, even though it should stop at 2GB. Anyway, back to making things work. I read lots of forums, tried some new tools like
mkdosfs -F 16 /dev/sdb1
and
dosfsck /dev/sdb1
, but still it wasn’t working. I had read somewhere that Palms didn’t support FAT32, which is the FAT for disks bigger than 2GB, so I didn’t try that… until now.

So I created a new partition using the lovely
cfdisk
and set the partition type to
0B W95 FAT32
, then I used
mkdosfs /dev/sdb1
to create a FAT32 filesystem (
mkdosfs
tries to use the most appropriate version of FAT). And…. voila! It works on my Palm TX, it works on Ubuntu, it works on Mac OS X. And I am happy…

Praise God from whom all blessings flow for the heavenly goodness in your every bite. Who can warm m

Praise God from whom all blessings flow for the heavenly goodness in your every bite. Who can warm my heart like you do? Macaroni and cheese, food above all foods. I say your name as if I’m reading a book to a group of Kindergarteners and I’ve just gotten to the most exciting part. Big smile, raised eyebrows, sparkle in my eyes.

But why you? Why now? Why the insane (but flattering) obsession?

It seems that my arch nemesis Evil Change is making yet another appearance in the comic book of my life. You remember Evil Change. He wears that crazy super-villain costume with the sequence tornado (No Capes!). He’s the party pooper usually lingering around graduations, weddings, going away festivities.

He enjoys small-scale attacks on children and the elderly, but is most commonly found besieging adultish Type A personalities. He can easily recognize them with his super-human radar that hones in on people who have more Excel spreadsheets than iTunes songs. People who are more likely to show off their PALM tx’s (which I’m sooo getting when I return to The Land of Plenty) than their own children.

Well, he must have pinpointed an inordinate number of lists, labels, and color-coded calendar items coming from my residence because he has flown in and caused quite a stir.

He has single-handedly transformed Fun!Cool! Amber into Crazy Amber. Fun!Cool! Amber is ok with change. She is superb at packing and organizing. She loves to check-off items on her To Do list, and she creates the perfect “Nine Hours on a Plane” playlist for her listening pleasure. She accepts change. She sometimes even delights in it—like adding corn to her salad or rearranging the furniture.

Meet Crazy Amber. She is not ok with change. When Evil Change crashes into her world, she transforms into a schizo compilation of all seven dwarfs. You never know when sublimely-Happy will turn into get-out-of-my-life-Grumpy or when ignorant-Dopey will become all-knowing-Doc. She does not accept change. She abruptly shifts between denial-anger-elation-shock-depression-bliss-lather-rinse-repeat. It’s not a pretty cycle.

Instead of the traditional therapies one might seek—journaling, shopping, meditating—I, Crazy Amber, have chosen you. Macaroni and Cheese. You never let me down. You are my constant. Joy in a bowl, smothered in processed cheese.

Comfort foods can be so cliché. Aww, you’re sick = chicken noodle soup. That fool broke up with you?! = One gallon of Double Fudge Brownie ice cream. Got some bad news about Grandpa = a cup of coffee. First time spending the night away from Mommy and Daddy = Oreos and milk. The team lost the big game = lots and lots of pizza and beer.

Macaroni and cheese has always been the answer for me. You’ve always been there. Elementary school every Thursday with two little smokies (Yeah, just two! Rip. Off. (P.S. Thank you Samantha Watts for thinking they were too greasy and always giving me yours)). At least once a week my mother made a big pot of it for dinner–with cut up hotdogs because we are cultured like that. It was a necessary nutrient on my plate every Sunday at Luby’s All-You-Can-Eat Cafeteria. One time Xboyfriend had his grandma make it from scratch just for me. And a definite college survival food…God Bless Sam’s Club for carrying it in bulk.

Remembering my first few hours in Mali when I was FreakedOut Amber, I vividly recall warm sensations of home coming from a packet of Easy Mac. When my friend Jenny arrived here without a clue–as most missionaries do–I pulled out the Kraft. On my brother’s first night here, we both cried over a hot bowl of cheesy noodly deliciousness.

And now, as our cupboards are nearly bare after giving it all away, I see 2 boxes of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. I see comfort. I see hope for Crazy Amber. I will defeat Evil Change. One bowl at a time.

One day I was using my Palm T|X, the next I was volunteering to train our Instructional Services group on some of the “in’s and out’s” of pushing the envelope with a PDA. Why?

Well, over the past 2 and 1/2 years my Palm has become that “itty-bitty” laptop replacement that has enabled me to:

write my formation assignments with ease on it’s handy infrared keyboard wherever I am and finish them in OpenOffice or Word when I am back home

use Wi-Fi to surf the web when it’s available (most of the time!)

quickly search the NAB for keywords and access any part of the Bible

carry AvantGo web pages and reading material off-line

listen to music or downloaded “podcasts”

keep a fully synchronized calendar

move files back and forth between my laptop or home media server with the nifty Wi-File application on the Palm

Outro recurso bastante divulgado é o acesso a mapas, utilizando o Google Maps.
