The ROM and its new addition: building of beauty or one of the world's ugliest?

TORONTO, the city that wants so badly to be considered world class, was dealt a bit of a blow in that quest the other day.

The website www.virtualtourist.com put the city’s Royal Ontario Museum on its list of world’s ugliest buildings.

The ROM opened a new addition two years ago. The Daniel Libeskind-designed aluminum and glass structure, which shoots out in sharp angles, contrasts sharply with the existing museum.

This architectural contrast is the primary reason virtualtourist.com gave for ranking the ROM the eighth ugliest building in the world (it beat out only a library in Kosovo and some yet-to-be built hotel in North Korea on the Top 10 list):

“What I.M. Pei’s pyramid is to the Louvre, so is the relatively new Michael Lee-Chin Crystal to the Royal Ontario Museum. While many praise the glass structure, just as many are troubled by the incongruity to the original, more traditional museum that still sits directly beside it.”

Some readers on the Toronto Star’s website concurred.

“It’s like sticking Godzilla’s head onto Pam Anderson’s body,” is how one commenter described it. (I’m not sure Pamela Anderson could ever be considered an apt analogy for a museum/heritage building – an inflatable bouncy castle, maybe – but I think I get his point.)

Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are just as many, like me for one, who think the ROM addition is a striking architectural achievement worth celebrating. And if the new building is being likened to the Louvre pyramid, that’s good company to be in.

For too long Toronto has been plagued by boring, ugly, conservative architecture. Thankfully times are changing and the ROM addition is one of many projects cropping up around town that take some chances, architecturally speaking.

We’ve seen Kate Moss knock off her own designer wardrobe for Topshop, had M, Madonna’s money-saving ranges for H&M, and “Lily [Allen] Loves” a bargain at New Look. But cheap-as-chips celebrity collaborations are looking old hat compared with a new wave of tie-ups that have more than just self-promotion and the retailer’s bottom line in mind.

Natalie Portman, the star of films such as Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium and the Star Wars prequels, is going one step further by designing her own vegan-friendly shoes for a New York boutique. The collection, for the Manhattan shoe emporium T Casan, goes on sale next month although keen shoppers can place pre-orders from 15 January. The vegetarian actor’s designs will sell for about $200 (100), making them a cheaper alternative to Stella McCartney’s leather-eschewing shoes which sell for at least 295.

So far eco-minded celebrity alliances have been few and far between, but retail experts predict that Portman’s shoes are the future of high street fashion for 2008. Leona Lewis, the X Factor winner turned pop diva and a fellow vegetarian, last week said she would “love” to create her own range of affordable non-leather bags and shoes.

Meanwhile, Debenhams has allied itself with Sir Steve Redgrave, the Olympic oarsman, who has put his name to a clothing range made with Fairtrade cotton that will go on sale for Fairtrade fortnight next month. And Katharine Hamnett, the fashion designer, is searching for a new high street partner after axing her nascent alliance with Tesco for her range of T-shirts made from organic cotton. Even Pamela Anderson, a spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has done her bit with a cruelty-free clothing line.

Richard Hyman, who runs Verdict Consulting, a retail consultancy, said shops ploughing the well-trodden celebrity endorsement route would not be enough of a draw for saturated shoppers. “This year shops will have to find the right endorsement that is sympathetic to their marketplace,” he said, adding that tapping into the consumers’ blossoming ethical consciousness with targeted tie-ups was one option retailers would choose. “Retailing today needs to be about offering a genuine point of difference,” he added.

Lauretta Roberts, editor of the trade fashion magazine Drapers, said eco-fashion was the “number one cause at the moment”, predicting more collaborations. “I don’t think we’ve had Lily Loves Organic Cotton. Not yet, anyway.” But she cautioned: “Whoever does it, both in terms of the celebrity and the fashion brand, would have to think very carefully. It would need to be a credible pairing on both sides, as you’re just asking for people to scrutinise your behaviour and business practices if you style yourself as an eco-warrior.”

Anya Hindmarch, the luxury handbag designer, knows this only too well. Despite being for an ethical cause, her limited-edition “I’m not a plastic bag” cloth bag, sold by Sainsbury’s, hit the headlines for the wrong reasons after it emerged it was made in China using cheap labour even though the supermarket said the factory pays double the minimum wage.

And although McCartney makes vegetarian-friendly shoes and clothes, Ethical Consumer magazine, which advises consumers where to shop on ethical grounds, points out that the designer’s eponymous label is owned by PPR, the luxury fashion giant behind several other lines that use furs such as fox, badger and mink.

Portman’s shoes will be made without animal ingredients: leather, fur and feathers are all off-limits. T Casan has said it will donate 5 per cent of the range’s profits to charity.

All along, some women are fighting to make men realize that a woman should not be hired in an office because she has good skills not because she has good boobs. But here’s this flight attendant making a strong conclusion that attractive women (what she meant by attractive women here are those who will willingly pull their skirts and show more skin just to get promoted and get accepted in a testosterone driven culture) should be the only ones to be hired as flight attendants. Well, what does she expect, loud gongs from all the women (what I mean women by women here are those women with calloused feet, skinny women, fat women, women with big glasses, women with scarred faces and finally women)?

Pamela Anderson’s infamous sex tape has finally come back to haunt her.

The former “Baywatch” star and Playboy model bares all in a candid interview
that will be aired on British television – including how she had to tell her two young sons
about the raunchy home video she made with ex-husband Tommy Lee.

Anderson’s coming clean to sons Brandon, 12, and Dylan, 11, about the tape was sparked by,
of all things, her cameo in the 2006 comedy “Borat,” reports The Daily Mail.

“I knew kids were going to watch the film and there was a reference to the tape in the movie
and they’re that age and, you know, people are going start saying things,”
Anderson tells British talk-show host Jeremy Kyle.

“I just said, ‘Look, Mummy and Daddy were massively in love, we videotaped everything,
everything was videotaped, and you’re probably going hear about something at school.’”

In the one-on-one interview, Anderson, 47, goes on to reveal intimate details about her turbulent personal life,
including her drinking and drug use, her rocky marriage to Lee,
about with Hepatitis C and her recent financial woes.

She admits to taking cocaine, and claims she has stopped drinking because it made her “crazy.”

“I haven’t had a drink in a month, I don’t drink,” she says.
“Champagne – sometimes I’ll drink it and I’ll get a little crazy, doing back flips and, you know,
wrestling people on the floor. But I’m taking a break right now.”

Anderson also admits to falling on hard times after spending $5 million on a dream home in Malibu
before running out of money.
“I’m going to sell it,” she says. “I hate (that). People commit suicide over constructions.
Relationships break down over constructions and I can see why. It rips your heart out.”

We’ve seen how they cast Cooking Mama as a heartless animal-goring sadist in the Unauthorized PETA Edition: Mama Kills Animals; now, they’ve cast Ronald McDonald as an evil cannibal clown with their new flash platformer, New Super Chick Sisters, to coincidence with the new Mario game. Stuwie would have a heart attack right about now. Surprisingly, the game’s actually pretty well-made (on par with the stuff at Kongregate), so be prepared to waste more than a couple of minutes with this one. The story:
