America Jones makes it back to London without Phaeton, and has no idea where he is, only that he is missing and seems to have deserted her. The only message she has received was a short note that said he had been shanghaied in Shanghai, she did not know what that meant or if she even believed him.

America goes to the flat that she and Phaeton rented, as it is familiar and she is sure Phaeton will return if he arrives back in town. On the way, she is attacked by a strange creature with skeleton arms and legs; she gets away with the help of Edvar, the gargoyle that has been by Phaeton’s side since he was a small child. She is told by the creature that there are many more of them in London. Meanwhile, Phaeton wakes up while still in the bowels of a vessel that he does not remember boarding, he only knows that he is soon to arrive in London and as he easily escapes the ship, he heads to the flat and is happy to see that America has already arrived.

America greets Phaeton hesitantly as she is not sure why he disappeared however she believes him when he tells her that he truly was kidnapped and forced onto this ship returning to London. They find out there are strange things going on in London and it seems some entity wanted Phaeton back no matter how he got here. They soon find out that the reason Phaeton is wanted back in town is because the orb (Moonstone) that was gifted to Phaeton by a Goddess has been stolen from Dr Exeter’s lab and according to several, Phaeton is the only one that can unlock the powers.

With the help of Gaspar Sinclair, a man who has been a thorn in Phaeton’s side for years and his team of Nightshade warriors, they piece together what they believe is happening. They find out there is an alternate London called Outremer, that exists and is unraveling and creating havoc in their current London. The Moonstone is the key to correcting the problems and must be retrieved as soon as possible.

Unpredictable danger follows Phaeton, America and the Nightshades while they travel back and forth between the two London’s following leads to the Moonstone. The story grips you from the beginning and does not slow down until the end as the gang tries to prevent a catastrophe. The ending is startling and leaves you wanting more.

What a wonderful gripping steam punk fantasy. I truly enjoyed the story. This is the second installment in the Paranormal Investigation series however it can stand alone as the author catches you up. I enjoyed both Phaeton and America, the chemistry between them is wonderful, and the secondary characters are a joy, the Nightshades are an entertaining group and I am looking forward to seeing them in future books.

The Highlands are all about clans, feuds and loyalties and the King is worried that some of his valued supporters, the Montgomery’s and the Armstrong’s are at war, which can hurt him in the long run. In his infinite wisdom the king thinks he has found the perfect solution, a marriage in an effort to halt the feud between the two clans. Although there is disbelief amongst the clans, they will both go through with the arrangement because to do otherwise would be to sign their death warrant.

Graeme Montgomery, the clan chief is worried, it is said that Eveline is still a young girl and it is thought that she isn’t right, that she is touched. Graeme would not want to hurt or scare the simple girl so she could never be a proper wife to him. Therefore this marriage would prevent him from having children to carry on the clan’s legacy; and although he does not like the idea, this responsibility will have to go to his brothers Bowen or Teague.

Eveline has not spoken a word in three years, ever since she fell from a horse and woke up several days later. At the time, she was betrothed to another man named Ian McHugh who is the son of a powerful clan leader that the Armstrong’s wanted an alliance with. The wedding had been called off after the accident when it was found that Eveline was not talking and did not seem right in the head.

Eveline is keeping a secret from everyone, she is so afraid of Ian that she is lying to all about what is wrong with her. During her betrothal, Eveline found that Ian was an evil man who enjoyed telling her in great detail of what would happen to her after their wedding, her life with Ian would have been a nightmare and although her parents love her and want nothing but happiness for her, they believed her fears were just normal fears before the wedding to someone she did not know well.

Eveline did suffer from her accident; she has been unable to hear anything and has been unsure of her voice, however she has developed the ability to read lips and is able to follow most conversations. She knows what others say about her, yet with the threat of Ian still around, she is keeping quiet.

She finds out about the marriage with Graeme and at first is shocked that the king would try to unite her clan with their sworn enemy however when the wedding party arrives and she first meets Graeme, she knows immediately that he is the man for her and she is all the sudden smiling. Graeme is taken back by her smile and is amazed that she is a very beautiful woman, not a girl at all. After the wedding, they head back to the Montgomery land where Eveline is introduced to very hostile clan members who do not welcome her and make her life miserable. She is very grateful for Rorie, Graeme’s sister as they form a friendship and bond which helps Eveline deal with several situations.

What a great story teller Maya Banks is, she blends wonderful tales with great romance. The characters are likeable and you enjoy getting to know them, the chemistry between Eveline and Graeme is electric and you see how close they become as the story progresses. The danger that finds both Graeme and Eveline on several occasions is exciting and gripping. They grow to love each other with trust and affection and are pleased when the clan begins to realize that although Eveline was born an Armstrong, she is quickly becoming a Montgomery in every aspect.

Roberta has some large gambling debts and does not want her abusive husband to find out and Jonas has given Roberta a way out. She is scared and a little immature to face her problems so goes to her sister for help. After eight years of marriage Roberta has changed into someone Sidonie does not like however Roberta is still her sister and she would do anything to protect her.

Roberta is the Viscountess Hillbrook and is married to William who is the cousin of Jonas. William gained his title when it was revealed that Jonas’ father and mother were not married. The hatred between Jonas and William is mutual and has a long history, including a time when they were in school and William attacked Jonas and ruining his face before anyone could intervene. When Jonas’ father passed away, he could not give his son the title however he could give his son the wealth, so even though Jonas is considered a bastard, he is very rich while William has not managed the small amount of money he inherited and is almost broke.

Sidonie has been living at Barstow Hall with Roberta and William however in a few months she will be able to go off on her own when she receives her small inheritance. Sidonie decides to take Roberta’s place and goes to Castle Craven to meet with Jonas, who is more than surprised to see the spinster sister.

After the first night, Jonas finds he does not want a martyr in his bed and wants Sidonie to come to him willingly, so they make a bargain, in return for her presence at Castle Craven for seven days, he will consider Roberta’s debts paid. Over the next week, they grow to care for each other and while on a visit to William and Roberta’s a sudden turn of events changes everything.

I really enjoyed this novel; a story about one person sacrificing for someone they love and another person finding how to forgive through years of heartache. Although in the beginning it took awhile for Jonas and Sidonie to grow on me because their connection seems rushed, however as the story progresses their feelings become more real and it broke my heart when Jonas felt betrayed and turned away from Sidonie, I truly knew the depths of their feelings for each other as they found their way back toward love.

Abby is not pleased with the rescue effort because she was not able to complete the assignment and is determined to go back and finish what she started.

Abby was recruited by Noelle after surviving a horrific childhood; she was bouncing around several government jobs when Noelle found her, knowing about her because she knew Jeremy Thomas, the man who adopted Abby when she was a teenager and knew she was trained well. Now Abby is working with a group of women undercover all over the world as an assassin. Noelle gives her the assignment to assassinate Blanco, an arms dealer and trafficker in Columbia. While undercover Abby finds he is also dealing in other items for sale that she can’t ignore, it seems he has found a lucrative business dealing with human cargo and most of them are young girls. Abby feels the only way to stop the auction is to be a part of it so blows her cover to be taken prisoner in order to save the girls. Abby had it all planned and had a hidden key to use in case she needed it. While being tortured and threatened by Blanco’s main man, Devlin, she gouges out his eye just as the mercenaries are storming in to grab her.

Kane Woodland is a former SEAL and has been working with the mercenary team for several years and is Jim Morgan’s second in command. Abby and Kane find they have an immediate connection and although he would like to pursue it, Abby has closed herself off from all feelings and does not trust Kane enough to support his pursuit. The only thing that is on Abby’s radar at the moment is to heal from her wounds and rescue those girls from Blanco and she will do anything to achieve it. Abby talks both Noelle and Morgan into helping with her plan of rescue the girls, they even bring in a few mercenaries from other places. While planning Kane receives phone calls from Devlin asking about Abby, trying to find out where she is and as soon as he finds Abby is with Kane and the team, he will only talk to her. Devlin obtains past information about Abby, tormenting her with the pain from her past in order to bring her out of hiding so he can get his revenge.

As the team plans the rescue and Abby deals with what to do about Devlin, she and Kane grow closer together and start forming a bond. Since Abby is unable to trust, the bond is stretched thin at times as Abby takes things into her own hands, jeopardizing the rescue of the girls as well as the tenuous relationship with Kane.

A wonderful exciting story that keeps you guessing and engaged until the end as you feel a part of the team. The characters are believable and the back stories keeps your interest as you want to find out what happens in the end. I enjoyed the relationship with Kane and Abby as well as the secondary characters that also seem to have a connection that could be developed in future books, both Noelle and Morgan and Isobel and Trevor all had connections that hopefully will be in the next in the series.

When he finds out his father is coming to town to make some changes in his life, Merrick immediately looks through his mail and accepts the Earl of Folkestone’s invitation to a house party. A two week stay in Kent, well away from his father sounds perfect. Merrick knows the Earl’s son Jamie, as they went to Oxford together.

Although Merrick has never used the money his father deposits into an account each month, he still does not want his father chastising him for the various scandalous behaviors that have become legendary. Merrick has always lived by the turn of a card or a good wager, and it is those wagers that sometimes get him into trouble.

On the way to Kent, Merrick meets up with Ashe Bedevere and Riordan Barrett who also are second sons and have become great friends, they decide to cool off and finding a pond to swim, this is where a young maiden comes upon them and Merrick has some fun teasing her by making her blush and run away.

Lady Alixe Burke is the Earls daughter and needed to get away from the house, so sets out for her favorite place with a book. She has decided that she is done with London and the Season and has firmly put herself on the shelf. Her family is not done with trying to find her a husband so decides to bring London to her – hence the two week party. When Merrick and Alixe are introduced they recognize each other from the pond and he decides to tease her on several occasions, much to her dismay.

Archibald Redfield is a man trying to pass himself off as a gentleman and has his sights set on Alixe because of her money. Feeling there is something sneaky about him, Alixe has shunned his advances. While sitting around bored one night, the gentlemen (Merrick, Redfield, Bedevere and Barrett) plan a wager between Redfield and Merrick, Merrick has to steal a kiss before sunrise from a lady. Redfield decides on the library for the scene and Merrick accepts thinking that there is no one up this late visiting the library and if no one shows there is no winner or loser. However, Alixe comes in to work on translating an old manuscript and while talking she finds out that Merrick knows a bit of old French and starts to help her with the translation. While they were working, Redfield burst into the library with the Earl of Folkestone to catch them in a precarious situation, however innocent it seems the Earl purposes a deal to Merrick to make his daughter the toast of London in the six weeks left of the Season and find her a husband or marry her himself.

The rest of the story is how Merrick and Alixe grow close while spending time together in Kent before going to London, there are several twists and turns, as it seems Redfield still has things he is willing to try to get Alixe and there is still the problem of both Alixe and Merrick not wanting to get married. However after a dangerous situation arises, they find that true love does change your mind. This was a good book however sometimes hard for me to connect with the characters. I was not sure I liked Merrick or Alixe in the beginning , however they both grew on me. I enjoyed the two secondary characters, Ashe and Riordan and I will be picking their stories up when they come out.

They were together for twenty years and although he taught her a lot about fighting and assassinating people, he was very vague about what she was and what abilities she has. One day Azriel abandons her and vanishes into the night, and leaves her to her own fate, she believes he is dead and since he always told her they were the only two surviving Shaedes, she picks up where he left off and becomes a highly trained assassin.

After several decades living as an assassin, Darian finds Tyler, he runs a temp like agency for the seedy people of the world, and he becomes her employer and benefactor. She makes herself believe they are doing good deeds as they only assassinate the truly evil that do not deserve to live. Darian and Tyler have a tight bond of friendship however, she knows that Tyler wants more and as he begins to act on the feelings they have for each other she holds back as she has been hurt several times in her life and is not very trusting.

On a routine job that Tyler has been hired for, Darian finds a surprise, there are others like her, she is not alone in this world. She leaves without the kill because the mark is faster and becomes a shadow like her, in order to find Tyler for some answers as to who hired him. It turns out that they were hired for the main reason to meet Darian and introduce her to the King of the Shaedes, Xander.

Suddenly Darian’s life has drastically changed, not only are there other Shaedes in the world like her, there are other non human beings that have always lived around her and she never knew. She begins to train with Raif, a fierce warrior, as Xander has hired her to kill an unnamed supernatural being that is stronger and faster than most and who is on the verge of causing a war that would end the world as they know it.

The story is a fast moving thrill ride from start to finish with so many twists and turns. I almost had a heart attack close to the end when the plot went in a direction that I did not expect. The story is fascinating and the character depth is amazing. The ending brings many surprises with both main and secondary characters that are not what they seem to be.

I really enjoyed this book; Darian is a very strong woman that has had a hard time in life and has trouble accepting her new role, and Tyler has some secrets of his own that they must work through. The plot wraps up satisfactorily with enough of a story left undone for the next book.

So they changed the name to Black Knights, Inc and started a business working for those that need special clandestine missions around the world.

Frank (Boss) Knight is the ex-SEAL running the operation, handling work from all over, with Becky as the main expert on the chopper business. Although Becky and Frank set off sparks between them, Frank will not pursue anything, thinking the age difference is too great and things would not work between them. Becky does not have anything to do with the Frank’s operation and is angry about always being left out. She does not want to be an operator but hates when they have meetings and conversations without her. So with Frank pushing her away and feeling left out, she tells Frank she is going on a month long vacation with her friend.

While Becky and her friend Eve are on their vacation sailing near the Seychelles, Somalia pirates board their catamaran and kidnap them. The pirates want money and believe the US will pay for the two women. So they contact Black Knight, Inc. who immediately make arrangements with the USS Patton to rescue the women. In the meantime, Becky and Eve have been with the pirates for a week when the pirate’s boss (Sharif) comes along. By this time Sharif knows that Becky is a mechanic and wants her to fix an engine on a British oil tanker that is stranded and the pirates want to take. This is where Frank and his men find Becky and Eve, working on the ship with Sharif watching over them. As Frank boards the oil tanker, Sharif escapes on the towed catamaran with a damaged arm with everyone wondering if this is the last time they see him.

Everyone returns to Chicago and back to living their lives while Frank and Becky settle into an uneasy truce, both not knowing how to act around each other. Things come to a head when Frank goes into surgery and a woman with a small child comes to visit him in the hospital and Becky must make some decisions. And to make matters worse, Sharif finds Becky and wants revenge. This book is a wonderful addition to the series, with misunderstandings, danger coming from their past encounter with the pirates and the tension escalating between Becky and Frank, the book keeps you interested until the end. I loved the relationships between all the different characters and enjoyed the romantic conflict between Frank and Becky. I am looking forward to the next story.

The Guardians of Eternity are trying to stop the apocalypse and with the help of Cassandra, a prophet whose sisters are mated with other Guardians and Caine, a full blooded were who is protecting Cassie and has been a pain to the Guardians in the past, they hope that they can prevent the Lord of Darkness from coming through the veil where it is being held prisoner.

The Dark Lord had been banished beyond the veil and kept there by The Phoenix (Abby) for several years, however over the past few months The Dark Lord has been trying to come through and allowing other dark creatures through as well. She created twin babies to use as a vessel for her return and has succeeded in capturing the girl child and currently looks like a young cheerleader.

As Cassie and Caine are on the run, they feel they can be more helpful on their own then with the other Guardians, as they feel the Guardians would just hamper their progress, however even as they try their best to stop The Dark Lord from finding the boy child, he is taken and reunited with his twin to become the Gemini that helps The Dark Lord become powerful enough to come through the veil.

The Guardians along with The Phoenix stand against The Dark Lord at the rift to fight to the death to prevent her from coming through. Cassie has another vision in the middle of the chaos showing that in order to win the battle they must tip the balance in their favor. She believes she knows just the person to help in that matter and sends a message to Levet, the small gargoyle who has little magic but can see through all illusions.

This is a great book that the action does not stop from start to finish. I enjoy this series and this book is a wonderful addition to the overall story arc. I have enjoyed watching Caine through several books and was very curious about Cassandra. They are a perfect match for each other and the attraction is very believable. The characters that come back in each book are a joy to see again and I am looking forward to more.

Cody Tucker is Silas’ son and the father of Shelby Lynn’s son, Jake. He left town years ago and promised he would never return because of his father. He did not even go to his father’s funeral however after the reading of the will, he knew he had to come home as he did not want his brothers (Noah and Beau) having to come anywhere near the ranch. The will stated that someone would have to live at the ranch, and he decided he could work there while running Tucker Industries, his business in Austin.

Cody is surprised and confused to find Shelby Lynn when he walks into the house. He could not believe she was living and helping the father he hated. They had a relationship ten years ago and after they shared a night of passion the relationship disintegrated when misunderstandings and supposed friends interfered, leaving heartache behind. Shelby Lynn ended up marrying Cody’s best friend Preston and lived a miserable life until moving to Sweet Plains.

Cody is even more surprised when Shelby’s young son comes into the house; he knows right away that Jake is his since they look so much alike. He is hurt and angry with Shelby for keeping Jake from him for so many years so the beginning of a reunion starts out rocky. As Cody, Shelby Lynn and Jake try to sort out their relationship, strange things are happening on the ranch, things that are making the ranch be unprofitable.

As the story unfolds, we find out the reasons Cody hated his father and why Shelby Lynn and Jake have such a different relationship with Silas. Cody has to come to grips with the fact that his father was flawed and was truly sorry when he died. Shelby Lynn also has a past that she must deal with, and when the past threatens Jake, she protects him with everything she can and is touched when she finds that she does not have to fight alone, as Cody is there to help. I loved the small town setting; the characters are funny and quirky and made me laugh out loud. Those ladies and their competition over food are truly hilarious. A great debut and I am looking forward to reading more stories.

Ian Ranulf was at one time, attracted to Daisy’s sister Miranda and tried to turn her against Archer before they were married. Ian and Archer were good friends at one time until Ian’s father died and blame was laid on Archer who had brought Ian’s father into a secret society called the West Moon Club. The club was obsessed with immortality and when Ian’s father wanted to leave the group a demon named Victoria tried to burn him alive and scarred him badly, making him weak and unable to lead his clan. Ian comes from a family of werewolves or Lycan and should have lead his clan however he had left the clan years before when his wife and son died. Ian let his younger brother Conell take over, however many in the supernatural world are unhappy with Ian’s decision.

Daisy is what is considered a “nose”, a person with exceptional smelling abilities and knowing her husband would never provide for her after his death, started working with a perfumer to make a future for herself. She developed a signature perfume however someone took the recipe and sold it to other men to purchase for their ladies. This seems to be the connecting piece between the women who are being targeted by the crazed beast around London. Ian notices that the beast (who he knows is a werewolf) has the smell of sickness about him and that could be why he has let the wolf side take over his body.

The Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals (SOS) has a duty to be kept informed of all supernatural beings and their activities. The SOS, along with most supernaturals want Ian in control of his clan, he is the true alpha and they do not believe his brother Conall is a good choice and his right hand man Lyle has made some suspicious choices.

As Ian and Daisy investigate the murders, they seek help from others in the SOS and visit a man named Lucien who is a GIM, ghost in the machine, an individual that has chosen to live forever after taking over another body. GIM’s are the spies of the supernatural world. Ian ends up employing a GIM to spy on Conell to find out if he is hiding the werewolf in order to frame Ian.
The story is steady and fast paced with wonderful suspense as it comes to a roller coaster ending when they try to find who is behind the attacks, who is hiding the sick werewolf and why the werewolf is attacking these women. The conclusion is surprising and fascinating as they search for answers. As Ian and Daisy fall in love they must find the courage to fight one more conflict to find true happiness.

Family is the central theme of this wonderful story. Matt Fletcher’s family has lived on Dare Island for several generations raising families and living off the land. He is busy running his own fishing business and raising his teenage son, Joshua, with a little help from his parents who run an Inn on the island. Allison Carter is the new teacher on the island and just happens to have Matt’s son in her class. She likes to meet all the parents of her students; especially those students that she feels need a little extra attention. It is not that Joshua is a bad kid; just that she feels he can do so much more than what she has seen so far.

Despite what others think, Allison believes she has finally found a place to put down roots. She escaped her overbearing parents who have more money than sense and has lived in several different places until she found this place. Since she has been here she has loved the fact that she feels like she belongs here.

Causing more family drama, Matt’s brother, Luke, comes home from Afghanistan with his daughter in tow, a daughter (Taylor) who is now 10 that no one knew about until her mother recently died. Luke gets her settled with his family and leaves again for Afghanistan leaving a frightened young girl who is unsure of the Fletcher family and who is quieter than she should be as she is holding on to some difficult secrets.

A wonderful family drama surrounds the romance between Matt and Allison as Matt meets Allison’s family and Allison gets to know Matt’s family. Matt’s hesitancy becomes apparent as they struggle to form a relationship as he does not believe Allison is here to stay. Matt has always felt responsible, not only of his parents and his son Joshua but now he has the addition of a niece his brother left behind. Clair Spencer has a quiet life living in the home her mother left her and runs a Christmas shop in Williamsburg, Virginia that she owns. Her calm existence comes to an end when she arrives home one night after closing the shop and is attacked in her driveway. Thanks to the neighbor’s dog that alerts those nearby, she is rescued but the attack leaves her with several injuries and many questions. After telling her assistant, Mary about the attack she is referred to Ben Riley by Mary’s brother Ray. Riley works in security and can be available to hire for the right amount of money and motivation.

At first Riley does not want the job, as he is still reeling from a job where a small child was killed. Even though he could not have prevented the outcome, he still feels horrible and does not want to get involved. However, he is curious about her and goes to visit the Christmas shop to see Clair and assess the situation. While he is there Clair is attacked again and as he saves her, he reluctantly agrees to take the job.

As Clair and Riley try to piece together why someone would try to kill her they make some startling discoveries and Clair realizes she has grown up with secrets and lies all her life. Together with the help from Riley’s group of friends who all seem to have a specialty, they try to find out who she is.

The plot progresses at a fast pace and we are hurtled toward an ending that has many twists and turns to keeps you guessing. Clair and Riley find danger as they discover the secrets to Clair’s past. Riley and Clair take comfort in each other during the most trying times however they fight the attraction as they both know that Riley is not the type of guy that is looking for a long term relationship. The ending is satisfying and I enjoyed this book immensely as Clair finds out who she really is and Riley starts looking at a future that could involved Clair.

Victoria Schulman has become a shell of what she used to be, thanks to a husband who wanted a weaker woman to make him feel strong. She came home to claim her inheritance when her estranged father was dying and has decided to stay. She does not get the inheritance she wished for but her brother is willing to sell her the Crooked Creek Ranch after it comes out of escrow in a year. In the meantime she needs to pick herself up and learn how to run a ranch.

Eli Turnbull has been the ranch foreman for years. He expected to get something when Lyle Baker died, since the Baker family slowly bought his family’s land over several decades when they were in need of money. But all Eli receives is the prized Angus herd that he intends to sell as soon as possible. Eli is an extremely angry man and takes it out on everyone, including Victoria. He has offered her 2 million dollars for the ranch but Victoria sees this ranch as her salvation and a future for her son.

Selling most of the herd serves several purposes for Eli; it gives him money to buy the ranch (assuming Victoria will eventually sell), purchase some Stallions for the breeding operation he wants to start and takes away the monthly income for Victoria’s ranch, thereby hoping to force her to sell.

Although Eli and Victoria do not see eye to eye, he stays on as foreman since he wants to use the space and equipment for his breeding program. However when things come to a head with Victoria she fires him leaving him with nothing to do but make some decisions about his future and find the reasons for his anger.

Celeste Baker, Lyle’s ex-wife and mother of Luc (Victoria’s half brother) also decides to stick around after Lyle’s death although Victoria somewhat believes it is to see her fail since Celeste was never good to her while growing up. However as they spend time together, they form an alliance and start to become friends. Victoria throws out the idea of making the ranch a spa which Celeste loves and jumps to help with funding, they need additional funding so Victoria goes to Eli to see if he wants to buy some of the land he has coveted. He ends up purchasing several acres and as they work things out they become closer and find they have more things in common than they thought, they might even like each other.

As the story unfolds, we see that Eli deals with some of his anger and Victoria grows a backbone, and on several different situations stands up for herself, their mutual respect and growing friendship develop into love. The story is very good and we see two very different people deal with outside forces that seem to decide their fate until they realize they can make their own decisions and forge their own way in life.

A great start to a new series.

Gage owns a tattoo parlor called Asylum. He tries to live his quiet life flying under the radar because he has many things to hide, however nothing is ever simple in the world Gage lives in.

He meets Bronx, a troll with a mysterious past that is an excellent tattoo artist, as he comes to Gage’s rescue when a friend tries to distract him and gets into trouble.

As this short story unfolds, Gage and Bronx try to help Parker causing more trouble, the fix finds themselves in several predicaments.

A fun and compelling story and I am looking forward to meeting more characters that will surround the tattoo shop called Asylum.

Sebastian Greyson is a master chef and owner of the upscale restaurant, Helena. He was born in Star Harbor, Massachusetts and still likes to think of himself as a local, although he seems to be the only one that thinks that way as he has been gone for several years. He still comes back at least once a year to hook up with his brothers to honor their father who died twenty years ago on Labor Day weekend. Val is the oldest and became the man of the house when their father died, always the stable one, he still lives in Star Harbor. Cole is the next oldest and has served in Afghanistan, came home a little broken and now is the local sheriff after being a cop in Boston. Theo is Seb’s twin and an author living in San Francisco. While spending time with his brothers, Seb is also brainstorming a new menu for his restaurant and planning for a new cooking TV show.

Lexie Meyers is the owner of LM Kitchen which is a breakfast and lunch place in Star Habor, she will soon start a catering business and her first customer is her friend Emma who is getting married in a few weeks to another local boy, Jimmy. Lexie moved here a couple of years ago to start a new life. She needed to leave California and a bad relationship and has moved as far away as possible.

Lexie is working at her restaurant when Seb and his brothers come in for coffee, she knows who he is and thinks he is presumptuous and stuck-up. Seb on the other hand, enjoys her company and her special creation, coconut cake. He starts hanging out at LMK, disrupting the flow and bothering Lexie. He even goes so far as to challenge her to a cook off so he can spend more time with her.

While Lexie and Seb spend more time together their attraction grows and Seb keeps putting off several decisions and opts to stay for his friend’s wedding in Star Harbor. Strange things happen to Lexie, enough that Cole, as local law enforcement, gets involved. They find out that Frank (Lexie’s ex-boyfriend) is no longer in California. Even though Lexie hopes she has moved on from her past, she takes out a restraining order on her ex; their past relationship had deteriorated so bad that in the end he tried to rape her. She does not believe he knows where she is at, but is always mindful of what could happen.

Deep Autumn Heat is a wonderful story that is compelling until the end. As the story unfolds we find out the fears that both Seb and Lexie need to overcome, Seb needs to think about where he wants his career to go and how far and Lexie needs to overcome the past, however when the past comes to meet her she needs help from the community, including Seb to get through it.

Lyle Baker wants his estranged children home before he dies. And he has the money and power to bribe Tara Jean Sweet to help him in his scheme. So they publish an article in the paper along with a photo of the two of them together announcing their wedding plans.

Luc and Victoria are the children Lyle wants home, which is the last place they want to be. Even though they were from different mothers, Luc and Victoria are very close and spent several summers with their father on the ranch, however those were some of the worst times for each of them. Lyle was a brutal father that dealt out discipline with his hand and fist. At one point Luc’s mother stopped sending him to the ranch when Luc started talking about how to stop his father. Victoria also had the additional problem that her mother was the mistress and she was not treated well whenever Lyle’s wife Gloria was around. The only reason Luc and Victoria think about coming home is that Victoria wants her inheritance and she will do anything, including returning to the ranch, to make sure that a Bimbo Barbie does not get it.

Luc is a famous NHL Hockey player currently on hiatus before his last year of playing, he needs to successfully convince everyone that the head injury he recently received is not causing brain damage and will not bother him during games. Although Luc never wants to see his father again, he will go back for Victoria who is a recent widow after her husband conned several people with a ponzi scam. She has lost everything and has a young child to think about and lacking confidence in herself, believes she can’t do anything except live the way she is used to.

Tara Jean Sweet is helping Lyle with his wish to have his children home one last time before he dies. She does not expect to marry him and plays along with this fake engagement. As a reward, Tara will get a portion of his leather business to have some security in her life, something she never had. She grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and left home in her teens after her mother got mad at her when her mother’s boyfriend took advantage of her. Tara behaved badly in her younger years while trying to survive, things she is not proud of and does not want anyone to know about, she is hiding from a past and a man she hopes will never find her.

The story has unsympathetic characters and you have to dig deep to find positive qualities about them. Luc is angry at everything including a possible life without hockey and Tara is a past gold digger that only recently has lived the straight and narrow. These people are not perfect by any means and need some redemption to be likable; however throughout the course of the story, with the father dying, the reading of the will and Tara’s troubled past coming to find her, they begin to become human and we end up cheering for them to find happiness. Throughout the book we also get a glimpse of the secondary characters, Victoria and ranch foreman Eli, they too need some redemption as they are both very angry and unlovable but they have a whole story to go through to gain our love.

An engaging story about finding out who you are by looking at where you came from.

Sarah Landon hated where she came from and always thought that the grass would be greener on the other side. She left Two Shot, Wyoming to go to an Ivy League school and bury her past. She ends up working for Carrigan Oil Company in Wyoming, not far from her home town and even though she is close to home, she does not let anyone know she where she came from.

Sarah’s life growing up had several hardships. She lived with her mother and sister in poverty and when her mother married, they found happiness for a short while. Then an accident took her stepfather’s life and changed everything. Sarah had to sell the horse and quit barrel racing, her mother had a hard time coping therefore started drinking and eventually died too young and her sister seems to be falling into the same poverty rut the family has never been able to shake.

Lane Carrigan is from a wealthy family and spent his early years at boarding schools and hated every minute of it. His most cherished memories were spent on the family ranch during the summers. Never really settling down, he becomes a bull rider with the rodeo and just wants to be a simple cowboy. He recently was given the responsibility of running the family ranch while his brother runs the oil company. Carrigan Oil still owns the land and the mineral rights but Lane owns the buildings and runs the ranch.

Lane and Sarah meet when he is visiting his brother and she is working. They seem to be on opposite sides as Lane’s brother wants to drill on the land. Lane does not want the drilling operation to ruin the small town of Two Shot and Sarah as the publicist needs to convince the town that this is good for everyone.

Sarah needs to deal with going home again and the nightmares she left behind, she does not realize the destruction she is doing to herself as well as her sister while being negative about their past and trying to find blame when there really is no blame, life sometimes just happens without it being anyone’s fault. Lane has to realize that if you work things out in the beginning you can let progress happen and it will not destroy the small town life – it might enhance it.

As they work through their own problems they realize that they might just be fighting for the same thing and falling in love along the way. A wonderful book about how the past can form the present, but that you can still change. I will be reading more Joanne Kennedy books in the future.

At Last is the fifth book in the Lucky Harbor series, a wonderful series that takes place in a small Pacific Northwest town, full of fun characters that laugh and love. Amy Michaels has lived in Lucky Harbor for a short time trying to find her own version of hope, peace and heart. Her grandmother came to these Pacific coastal mountains more than five decades ago finding her own version and Amy is going on the same journey. As a teenager, Amy was dropped off at her mother’s house after her grandmother died, a mother that was too young when she had Amy and did not want her anyway. Amy left soon after and bounced around the country, when her mother’s husband got too close and no one wanted to believe her. After many years Amy has found a place in Lucky Harbor with a job, friends and harmony.

Matt Bowers has lived in Lucky Harbor for several years moving here after problems in Chicago working as a SWAT team member caused him to not trust himself anymore. He was also in the military and is currently the supervising park ranger working in the mountains surrounding Lucky Harbor. Matt eats everyday at the Eat Me Café where Amy works and they have been watching each other ever since Amy came to town.

As Amy reads her grandmother’s journal and travels the same path as she did, Amy’s thoughts about her grandmother change as well as how she feels about herself. While searching and several phone calls, Amy reconnects with her mother, who now seems to want a relationship after all these years. Amy also finds a troubled sole that she feels she can help when she meets Riley Taylor an eighteen year old who is hiding out trying to survive much like Amy did years ago.

This is a funny and touching story with great new characters and those we welcome back from previous books as we gain more insight into their world. As Amy and Matt grow closer she starts to find herself and therefore helps Matt deal with past issues that made him feel less than adequate about himself and his work. A compelling story about what life can throw at you and how you deal with them to grow.

Rick has done exceptionally well with the 1000 pieces we have done together over the years, but this year I,  “Graduated him”, ROFLOL  to this 1500 piece one we are doing now and he is doing fantastic with it, although he gets frustrated faster than I do. I have seen him advance in his experience and ability to do this size puzzle and pretty soon he will catch up to my experience level and then we will have to move on to the 2000 piece puzzles.  They will really challenge us, I am sure, although I have never done one, and will require much larger table too.

We are almost done with this one though, and we have another 1500 piece one waiting in the wings which promises to be of equal difficulty  <G>

This is the third book in the wonderful Sugar Shack series by Candis Terry, an Idaho author who is finishing up this series and recently signed a new deal with Avon for another series that will also come out in paperback.

Kelly Silverthorne has come home to heal. The murder trial she had put her heart and soul in came back with a not guilty verdict and it has hit her hard. This was the first trial she has ever lost and the fact that she knows the man is guilty is even worse. So she is sitting in her family’s bake shop questioning her future. She has a few weeks before another trial begins and since her brother is getting married to Emma, it is a good excuse to visit, stay awhile and make some decisions.

Kate, her little sister is running the Sugar Shack with their father. Kate’s new husband, Matt is the sheriff of Deer Lick, Montana and his best friend James Harley is the deputy, James also happens to be the one night stand Kelly had during her sister’s wedding reception at Christmas time. Kelly rarely drinks, always being Sister Serious, however, she let loose for the wedding and they shared an exciting night together, and then she left. She knows she would see James again, she just did not know it would be on the first day she is back in town.

Kelly is driving her mother’s old car while in town; little does she know that both her sister and brother experienced the same strange occurrence with their recently deceased mother whenever Tom Jones starts singing on the radio. Kelly never had a great relationship with her mom; she was the one that did everything right and therefore felt invisible. Her mother did not realize she treated the children differently and so, as with her brother and sister, seems to want to make amends with Kelly and tell her she was loved. Her mother just communicates is an unconventional way.

James has his own problems to handle, several years ago his mother suffered a stroke and therefore he inherited two Yorkshire terriers (Poppy and Princess) and has been raising his brother (Alex) who is a teenager that seems to be finding trouble. James was a troubled kid and knows what his brother is heading for, if not for a life changing event that almost killed him and a sheriff who took him under his wing, James would not have survived his younger years.

Kelly and James bump into each other several times, and although neither seems to be looking for a relationship, they appear to be having one. At one time, James tells her she needs to find her hidden talent, something that makes her and others smile. She meets Twinkie (a clown) at the hospital and as they talk about what clowns can do for others Kelly begins to think that she might have just found it. Sprinkles is born as her alter ego.

As the story unfolds, the road to a happy ending has some rough patches; Kelly and James have several obstacles to overcome. Kelly faces a decision about her future and how she feels about herself and her mother and James needs to deal with his brother Alex. It is a wonderful story about family, love and finding your hidden talents to make you and others smile. I love seeing characters from the first two books; the interaction is fun and entertaining. You do not have to read the first two books to jump in to this book; however they are great stories to read.

Deacon Berg is in Hawaii for his friend Kade’s wedding. Enjoying a little rest before he makes a big decision about the next step in his career, he has had an offer to teach at Coronado and is thinking of taking the job. Deke knows something is missing from his life and he is not sure how to go about getting it.

Samantha Walters is the something that is missing from Deke’s life, they were once married however ten years ago he walked away, but never stopped loving Sam. They have run into each other over the years and every time it is like they have never been apart. They drive each other crazy, but with Sam’s commitment issues and the fact that when they were younger they could never get past the arguing, they just did not fight hard enough for the marriage.

Deke runs into Sam while she and her two friends are walking on the beach near the reception and it is almost like they had never been apart, they have always felt that strong attraction as they pick up from the last time they saw each other and enjoy a wonderful night together. Deke is only in Hawaii for a short time and as he is leaving he makes a decision that will change the rest of their lives – Deke has finally decided that he will never be without Sam by his side. He just needs to set it all in motion and hope Sam feels the same.

When Deke arrives on Sam’s doorstep after six weeks, things are not as easy as Deke hopes they will be to gain the future he wants. There are several obstacles standing in the way of their happily ever after and we watch the roller coaster ride as they work through them to the end.

Melissa Schroeder never disappoints. Her books are always full of fun, laughter and love. I enjoyed this addition to the Harmless series about the military men and women and their lives. I loved seeing old friends and meeting new ones, looking forward to more stories that include these wonderful characters.

This book is a collection of three stories about military men and those that love them. Cathy Maxwell writes about an English captain fighting in Regency England and the woman that captures his heart while transporting her back to England. Lynne Hinton’s story takes place in Pie Town, the small town that is featured in her Pie Town series. A hometown boy is in a hospital in Germany recovering from injuries and the town that supports him. And Candis Terry’s story about a solder coming home for good and those that will not let him forget how much he is loved.

The Bookish Miss Nelson by Cathy Maxwell

Captain William Duroy is commanded to escort Miss Pippa Nelson to Lisbon and then back to England. She usually follows her father wherever he goes acting as his hostess, however he recently left her at Wellington’s headquarters as he went on a mission without instructions as to how long or what to do with her. So the general is making a decision, he does not want her there anymore and is punishing the captain by making him escort her.

Pippa is a headstrong young woman and has been following her father around for years, therefore does not like being pushed around. She is unhappy with the situation and let’s everyone know how she feels. While traveling, Pippa makes a decision that puts her and William in danger. While trying to get back to safety, they end up doing something heroic and then fall in love. A smart, fun story of finding love in the most unusual places.

Letters from Pie Town by Lynne Hinton

Raymond Twinhorse is a lifelong citizen of Pie Town who was recently injured and is now in a hospital in Germany. The town sends out an announcement saying they want to mail a get well parcel to him and ask if everyone would write a letter to Raymond to say how much he is loved. His girlfriend Trina is in charge of the project.

The letters are so heartwarming, full of love and humor as citizens of Pie Town write about what is going on in the small town and how much Raymond means to them. This story let’s those fans of Lynne’s series Pie Town, revisit some great characters.

Home Sweet Home by Candis Terry

Candis has dedicated this story to the men and women of the Idaho Army National Guard at Gowen Field and Mountain Home Air Force Base. As my son is a member of the Army National Guard this is a wonderful tribute.

Aiden Marshall has come home for good. He left with two other friends (Billy Marks and Bobby Hansen) several years ago to become Rangers, however he is the only one coming home and is having trouble dealing with the loss and deciding what he wants to do. Paige Walker, a hometown girl that works at the diner and has recently purchased her aunt’s place with plans for the future is waiting for him, as Aiden is the person she has in mind to share that future with.

As soon as Aiden walks into the diner, Paige is ecstatic, however she realizes he has changed, he has lost his smile. Aiden is unsure of what he wants to do, but he feels he is not good enough for Paige and has come home to tell her goodbye. After a heartfelt conversation in which he tells her all about his life in the service, she finds out about his dog Rennie that he had to leave behind. As Aiden hides out at the family ranch helping his brother and avoiding Paige, she decides that she wants to show him how much the town loves him and how much she wants to fight for him. In a small town, it does not take much for news to travel as she asks for donations to help bring Rennie home. This is a moving story about a woman who does not give up and the love she has for Aiden that helps him heal.

All three stories were wonderful moving tributes to those that are serving and have served in the service to protect our freedom. The love they all receive from friends and family is warm and genuine.

Lethal Rider is the third book in the Lords of Deliverance series, a wonderful and exciting series about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. After the thrilling conclusion of Immortal Rider book we find Thanatos who has been paralyzed for eight months and Regan in hiding and about ready to give birth to a child that can either start or stop the Apocalypse.

Thanatos is being held against his will, he knows someone comes in to change the feeding tube and turn the TV on and he knows that Limos and Ares said it would only be a few more weeks and they will release him. What he does not know is why and he is getting angrier by the minute. When his sister and brother leave him, Thanatos realizes that he can move his fingers and toes, and he is not waiting around for anyone to inject him with another round of Hellhound saliva. Using all his willpower he gets up and is immediately drawn to both death and danger, he visits death first in Australia and realizes his brother Reseph/Pestilence is causing havoc all around the world. He then follows his danger feeling as it takes him to Regan, not knowing why he is being pulled toward her until he finds out about his child and that he needs to save and protect them both.

Regan is feeling very guilty and regrets her actions of forcing Thanatos. She gains comfort from the parchment of a tiny book penned by an angel. As she is waits for her baby to be born, thinking she is safe, vampires enter the compound to both kidnap and kill her, which is when Thanatos arrives and takes her back to his place to keep her safe with him until the child is born.

The world is in a panic as the Horseman’s brother Reseph/Pestilence is gaining power and causing destruction everywhere. The Horsemen are split when it comes to killing Reseph/Pestilence, Thanatos believes they can repair his Seal however others do not and want to kill him. As they wait for the baby, Regan and Thanatos spend time together, she rearranges his home as her OCD goes into overdrive, he finds himself dealing with both the Daywalker and Nightwalker vampires he surrounds himself with. He has brought all the Daywalker vampires of the world to live and work for him and there seems to be some traitors in the house.

As Thanatos and Regan fight danger from his vampires and the ever emerging Pestilence, other things are happening around the world that are affecting the turn of events. The angel’s Reaver, Harvester and Gethel have several conflicts, a connection between Thanatos and all vampires comes to light and the Aegis seem to be taking sides leaving those with close ties feeling helpless to stop the split.

The ride to the finish of this book is thrilling and full of twist and turns you will not expect. This is a wonderful book and the story leads well into the last book as we wait to see what will happen with Reaver, Harvester, Reseph/Pestilence and all those that visit again from the Demonica series that have a part in the continued story in this world.

This is the fourth in the Lucky Harbor series, a great addition to a wonderful series.

Ty Garrison is in hiding. Not from anyone in particular but basically from life. He is recuperating from reinjuring his leg and he cannot go back to work until a doctor signs off. Ty feels that he lost everything several years ago in a plane crash when everyone died but him. He was a medic while with the Navy SEALS and could not save his friends, so has stayed to himself since, not making new friends or putting down roots anywhere. He needed a place to recuperate and a colleague from basic training, Matt, found him a place to stay in Lucky Harbor until the local doctor (Josh) signs off and clears Ty to work again. Ty is still in special ops but is now working for a private contractor to the government, it can be just as physically demanding and dangerous as before therefore the doctor wants him totally healed before agreeing he can go back.
Mallory has grown up in Lucky Harbor and has always been the good girl that takes care of everyone. Including her family, the neighbors and anyone else that comes along. When Mallory was sixteen, her older sister Karen took an overdose of pills on purpose and Mallory has blamed herself ever since. Mallory was the last one to see her and feels she should have known Karen was saying goodbye when she gave her a necklace and told her to be the good one in the family.
During a vicious thunderstorm fate takes hold of both Mallory and Ty and changes their lives forever. Mallory was at the Eat Me Cafe to pick up a birthday cake for her brother and decided to wait out the storm. The only other two people inside the Cafe are Amy a waitress who has not lived in town long, just waiting to decide what to do next and a new women with blond hair that Mallory had not met yet. Turns out her name is Grace and she was just stopping by on her way to find work after a job offer in Seattle turned ugly, she had a coupon for the B&B in Lucky Harbor so here she is.

While sitting in the cafe talking, several trees crash into the windows and the three huddle behind the counter to fend off the snow and wind now blowing into the cafe. While deciding what to do about their current situation, they hear a moan outside, Mallory being the person she is goes to find out who is in trouble . So the three end up helping Ty by getting him warm in Mallory’s car and calling the paramedics. While sitting and waiting in the car, Amy tells Ty he owes Mallory a date and the upcoming benefit auction was a great way to pay her back for saving his life.
The town of Lucky Harbor is full of characters that all small towns should have, funny, interfering and full of warmth. A Lucky Harbor Facebook page gets updated with the latest gossip and is hilarious, the fact that the town knows that Mallory has a date with Mysterious Cute Guy ( Facebook has been updated with sightings of him for the last 6 months)is so much fun. So when Ty shows up at the auction unaware he was supposed to be Mallory’s date (because he was out of it and does not remember) he surprises her by going along with the ruse therefore not embarrassing her. They share an extremely hot few hours together with Mallory promising she is OK with just one night and that he is her “walk on the wild side”. This suits Ty perfectly as he does not want any commitment, as soon as his leg heals he is out of Lucky Harbor and back to work.
This series is so good. I love the town and the characters. The story is a wonderful journey for both Ty and Mallory as they both learn that their rolls in life can change and grow still keeping their real selves.
I love the interaction with Facebook, the updates are classic. The story is wonderful and I laughed and cried while following Ty and Mallory on their discovery. We do not see much of the main characters from the first three books, these next three stories are intertwined with Mallory, Amy and Grace. I can’t wait for more.

About That Night is the third book in the FBI/US Attorney series that takes place in Colorado.  The three have a continuing story arc that threads its way through each book.  The first book is called Something About You and is the story of Cameron Lynde and Jack Pallas.  Three years ago she was a newly appointed assistant U.S. attorney and Jack was an undercover FBI agent who risked his life in a crackdown against the head of a crime syndicate.   Cameron was ordered to drop the investigation by the U.S attorney in charge which angered Jack and when confronted by journalist, Jack said some very colorful things in public about Cameron which came back against him and almost ruined his career.  Now they have to work together on an investigation of a murder she witnessed.  The second book is called A Lot Like Love and is the story of Jordan Rhodes a wine shop owner and Nick McCall an FBI agent who must go undercover to take down a money launderer.  Jordan is acquainted with the accused man and makes a deal to help the FBI and US attorney’s office in order to get her brother Kyle out of jail early, a year ago pleaded guilty to computer fraud.

In About That Night, Rylann Pierce is a new assistant U.S. attorney who has recently moved back to Colorado after a breakup with her fiancé.  Her first task is a simple “agreed motion” on the release of a prisoner; since it is a case that all parties are in agreement on, Rylann is just to sit in for another attorney who is busy.  She receives the file from Cameron (newly appointed U.S. attorney in charge) and almost falls over as she reads the title:  United States v. Kyle Rhodes.  Rylann is not sure if she should say anything to Cameron since nine years ago she met Kyle Rhodes in a bar and he walked her home.  They felt an instant attraction toward each other and if there had not been a tragedy in Kyle’s life the next day, they may have experienced much more than one amazing kiss.   Rylann decides she will keep quiet and represent the U.S. attorney’s office since this is just a fluke and it will be over quickly.

Kyle Rhodes is the son of a billionaire and brother of Jordan.  He is a computer genius and one year ago he did a very stupid thing because of a woman, he shut down the social media website Twitter for two days therefore causing worldwide panic.  The U.S. attorney’s office prosecuted him to the fullest, calling him a terrorist as they and the FBI wanted to prove that they do not show favoritism to someone just because he was from a wealthy family.  He plead guilty (because he wanted to own up to his mistake) and was sent to jail for 18 months.  He was recently granted a released when his sister Jordan made a deal with the U.S. attorney’s office.  At the hearing he immediately recognizes Rylann as the young law student he met years ago.
Rylann keeps her distance from Kyle even after the court date not wanting anyone to come up with assumptions.  During a murder investigation the U. S. attorney’s office finds out that while in prison Kyle overheard a prison guard plotting murder.  So the attorney’s office contacts Kyle to see if he would be their witness.  This throws Rylann and Kyle together, and as they work through the case, they realize that the chemistry between them has not diminished from nine years ago.

This story was very good however it did not have as much suspense as the first two books in the series; I kept expecting something more to happen.  It was as if this story just finished up the plot from the first two books.  You do not have to read the first two since About That Night will catch you up to date, however all are great books and you get to see how the character depth grows with each story.  The writing is well done, the chemistry between Rylann and Kyle is believable, and they are very likable people as they try to stay away from each other during the investigation.   However in the end she finally tells all that she is in love with the Twitter Terrorist.
