Love & enjoy! :)

Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood star in this searing war drama that packs plenty of explosive excitement and fervent passion. Directed by Delmer Daves (The Badlanders) from Joe David Brown’s gripping postwar novel (screenplay by Merle Miller), Kings Go Forth weaves elements of romance, war and miscegenation into a powerful, compelling and riveting film. In WWII France, Corporal Britt Harris (Curtis) is assigned to work alongside war-weary Sgt. Loggins (Sinatra)a man he soon rivals for the affections of the beautiful Monique Blair (Wood), an American who grew up in France. But when the men learn that Monique’s parents are racially mixed, it tests the character of each…and provides the powerful thematic framework that shapes Kings Go Forth into a hard-hitting and still timely film.

It comes from Hollywood’s era of grown-up “topic” movies, but Kings Go Forth has not left much of a trail. Two GIs, stationed near the French Riviera toward the end of World War II, compete for the love of a local girl (Natalie Wood). Her secret: Her father was black. The guys are Frank Sinatra, in his lost and lonely key, and Tony Curtis, as a spoiled kid breezing by on his looks (this was the same year Curtis did The Defiant Ones, also on race). Director Delmer Daves was very good at this kind of melancholy melodrama (see also A Summer Place), but this movie’s non-reputation is easy to understand; it’s mild and sentimental at its core. The only character that doesn’t seem to be Representing Something is Sinatra’s tender portrait of a soldier at loose ends, a far cry from his nervy Maggio in From Here to Eternity. –Robert Horton

" src="http://littlegirlbigvoice.wordpress.com/files/2008/10/837375_mouth1.jpg" alt="Julia F." width="291" height="300" />

You’ve probably already figured out from the title of this website that speaking up and being a voice against injustice is a kind of a big deal here. But it doesn’t stop at the moment of outcry. You can’t talk if you don’t walk. Least not in my book.

Here’s the deal. I get these emails from organizations that are involved in very worthy causes, calling on me to participate in an observance against one of the many injustices going down on our planet. Many of them are revolve around not using a certain common tool or resource for a day to make a statement–which is great. Statements are needed, sure enough and we need people organizing these drives for awareness. But what gets to me is that we so often jump on board to make these statements without any real action to back them up. What are we really accomplishing by refraining from drinking coffee for one single day as a symbol of “supporting” Ethiopian coffee growers that are being screwed by the global markets and so-called (entirely un) free trade? What difference will that make when we open our can of Folger’s tomorrow morning and continue to perpetuate a cycle of exploitation?

Like, “sorry you’re getting screwed. We acknowledge that it sucks to be you, but that’s all we have time for.”

That’s whack people.

We’ve got to stop these “unfunded statements” and start putting something behind our words and symbolic gestures. We can’t just sit by and continue to let our humanity become another “No Child Left Behind” (good intentions without any semblance of adequate backing). If something makes you ill every time you hear about it, then how about this: DO SOMETHING. THROW THE FOLGERS OUT AND BUY SOME ORGANIC FAIR-TRADE BEANS!!!

But I’m a poor college student! Or, I’m a poor just-out-of-college entry-level employee paying off a mountain of student loans! Or, I’m a parent-made-poor by putting a student through college! Or, I just spent every penny I had on my iPhone!

My 6th grade math teacher used to say, “Excuses are the nails you use to build your house of failure.” A quote I’m sure he ripped off from some great thinker, but it’s the only damn thing I remember from his class (I can’t even remember his name!). Funding doesn’t necessarily refer to throwing down your increasingly less available disposable income. It can mean devoting time to raising awareness or volunteering at an organization involved with the cause you want to champion. What about running a 10K to raise money instead of just donating? Or organizing a drive to collect items in need for a cause? Or spending part of your Thanksgiving serving meals to elderly citizens who don’t have any family?

Point is, saying you support a cause with your words is nice and should be commended (YOU USED YOUR WORDS! YAY YOU!). But showing you support a cause with your actions is at least 10 million billion gazillion times better, because it takes your involvement level from “aware sideliner” to an “agent of change” (ESTUPENDO!!!!).

You can guess which one we prefer here!

If you’re thinking to yourself that this little girl is throwing down a bit of a gauntlet–you’re right. I most certainly am. However, said little girl is NOT–repeat, NOT–making an unfunded statement (Lord in Heaven forbid)! The Eugene Marathon has my name written all over it with Train For Humanity reaping the benefit of my crazy desire to tear down my body to the point of breaking in order to extend the basics to those in the Darfur Region through Darfur Peace and Development Organization (And–HINT HINT–I will be accepting donations, love and free massages for my sure-to-be-aching body from January to May 2009).

To those of you already being champions at championing a cause–you freakin’ rock our world. PLEASE write in and tell us what you’re involved in! Who knows–maybe you’ll inspire an agent of change in-training!

If you need some inspiration, here are a few causes I’m getting myself into that you might connect with too.

Train For Humanity: “Was created as an almost entirely online organization in order to reduce overhead to as little as possible, and to show people that with a little creativity and innovation, anyone can assist and make a difference in the world. The concept is simple: getting fit + social media + blogging = social good. Train for Humanity uses the web, social media, and blogging in tandem with everyday athletes in training to support organizations that help prevent suffering and alleviate the pain of children, orphans, and refugees who have been displaced due to genocide or internal strife and war within their country (www.trainforhumanity.org).”

XDRTB.ORG: “Is an extraordinary effort to tell the story of extremely drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) and TB through powerful photographs taken by James Nachtwey. XDR-TB, or extremely drug-resistant tuberculosis, is a new and deadly mutation of tuberculosis. Similar in creation to multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) but more extreme in its manifestation, it arises when common tuberculosis goes untreated or standard TB drugs are misused. James’ photographs represent these varying strains. Learn more about TB, MDR-TB and XDR-TB, and learn how you can take action to stop this deadly disease at www.xdrtb.org.”

Pangea Day: “In 2006, filmmaker Jehane Noujaim won the TED Prize, an annual award granted at the TED Conference. She was granted $100,000, and more important, a wish to change the world. Her wish was to create a day in which the world came together through film. Pangea Day grew out of that wish. The first-ever Pangea Day took place on May 10, 2008. Locations in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro were linked for a live program of powerful films, live music, and visionary speakers. The entire event was broadcast — in seven languages — to millions via the internet, television, and mobile phones. Throughout the day, we heard from an extraordinary lineup of speakers and musical performers: Queen Noor of Jordan, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Lisa Ling, Dave Stewart and friends, Gilberto Gil, and Iranian rock phenoms Hypernova were among those taking part (www.pangeaday.org).”

Today I’m providing more information about it, hopefully to encourage you to let it influence your thinking and feeling in a way that inspires you to take action !

The usual news clips and the usual spiritual quote are not here today. I feel bringing this event to your awareness is the news and your response to it is the spirituality.

Take a little time and re-live the initial dream for this amazing event, the whole event, or some highlights:

Here’s some feedback, immediately after the event, from the Pangea Day website:

“The first-ever Pangea Day was a monumental success…People from everywhere tuned in to watch the live broadcast in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro and grassroots events flourished in cities, communities, and private homes.

“The response has been tremendous. Here’s a sampling of the voices we’ve heard from so far”:

“This has been my dream to have such day for years, and today I see it come to reality!”

“I just stumbled onto the last half hour of the Pangea Day show here in Toronto and am so happy I did…I’m 48 yrs old and got the most wonderful feeling of finally belonging to a community that speaks to and for me…I’m going to check out the web site and find a drum to bang and some people to hug and love!

Ursula of Toronto, formerly of Kircubbin, Northern Ireland

“It’s 4:00 am here and I couldn’t go to bed without writing to you and telling you how beautiful, thought-provoking and deeply moving the experience was.”

Rhea from Chandigarh, India

“Next year – and there MUST be a next year and many years thereafter – please have sponsors everywhere on our planet promoting and advertising this great event and making sure the world watches…”

Barbara, South Africa

“I did not intend to spend hours in front of the TV today but I could not turn it off. You have re-introduced hope in my life, and probably to millions of others today. You gave a gift to the world!”

Lisa, Victoria, BC

“Watching the different stories of people, I see that there is hope and will to come together, to unite. I hope to see Pangea Day every year.”

Nabeel in Karachi, Pakistan.

“We are Islamic people. We’re from Bangladesh. The Pangea Day event was great. We have to say, that was one of the greatest 4 hours of our lives!”

The Khan Family in Quebec, Canada

“I was touched, moved, and inspired. Coming from a third world country, which has a terrible reputation worldwide, where there is an extreme political unrest, suicide bombings all over the town…the events…made me feel a lot better. That maybe there is some hope.”

Fizza in Pakistan

“We started watching the event with the intention to go for dinner at some point… But… we couldn’t leave!”

The Mother of Pangea Day

Yesterday’s post was about how we can live peace in our daily lives, in spite of the horrific violence and crushing oppression that bedevils us. This post is about how Global Peace can grow from the seeds of peace we sow in our daily lives.

From the San Angelo Standard-Times: 11 DAYS OF GLOBAL UNITY: An introduction

From the Washington Times: Time for ‘Global Freedom Coalition’

May 10, 2008, Pangea Day, was historic—a Seed Day in humanity’s growth toward Global Unity—four hours of film, created by individuals around the globe, shared by individuals around the globe. In the words of the creators of Pangea Day: “In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it’s easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that — to help people see themselves in others — through the power of film.”

I covered the event here when it happened but it just seems like a good time to bring it to our attention again . . .

Here’s a video of the first 25 minutes of Pangea Day:

Today’s Spiritual Quote:

“The economic connection between disarmament and development represents only one side of the issue. A spiritual connection also exists. Resources spent for weapons drain not only national treasuries; they also drain the reservoirs of human hope and trust.

“The two issues must be approached in an integrated manner. Not only can disarmament further the cause of development; development can further the cause of disarmament. Indeed, the key to advancing the cause of both disarmament and development lies in fostering a sense of global unity. Unless unity is attained, true peace and security will remain out of reach.”

Vale a pena conferir : http://www.pangeaday.org/

The Ball by Orlando Mesquita 2001

Can film change the world? Probably not. But those who watch them can. I was recently introduced to Pangea Day, an organization who’s aim is to “use the power of film to strengthen tolerance and compassion while uniting millions of people to create a better future.” Through the power of film this organization seeks to eliminate borders and help people see themselves in others.

Among the many short films on Pangea’s site you can watch, I was captivated by Orlando Mesquita’s The Ball. Mesquita is from Mozambique and an award winning filmmaker. Since 1984, Orlando Mesquita has edited, directed, and produced over 20 films, including features, educational programs, and documentaries. His projects explore the many facets of Mozambican life such as the role of women and war, refugees, and demobilized soldiers.

The Ball is a football story, in which the children have found a very interesting way to make a ball using condoms. It pays homage to the creativity of poor children, many of them orphans in Mozambique’s central region. As you enjoy the short film Orlando Mesquita wants you to think about how mistaken our statistics are in relation to condom use.

Pangea Day will facilitate community-building activities around the world connecting inspired viewers with numerous organizations which are already doing groundbreaking work. I encourage you to visit their site for more information.

Pangea means entire earth. The supercontinent of 250 million years ago before the land masses separa

Pangea means entire earth. The supercontinent of 250 million years ago before the land masses separated into today’s configuration. At that time the world was one. Today it’s still one, of course, and we are all of the human race. But we have so far to go when it comes to tolerance, understanding and embracing each other’s differences.

Pangea Day 2008 took a small, but meaningful step towards bringing us together through the international language of film. The idea took flight in 2006 when filmmaker Jehane Noujaim won the TED Prize (Technology, Entertainment Design). She was granted $100,000, and more important, a wish to change the world. Her wish was to create a day in which the world would come together through film.

On the Pangea Day web site they define their mission and purpose as follows:

In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it’s easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that—to help people see themselves in others—through the power of film.

My description for Pangea Day? Sundance with a cause.

May 10th was Pangea Day. Films and speeches were streamed to a worldwide audience. Over 2,000 films were submitted for consideration. The broadcast was a 4 hour wonder for the eyes, ears, heart and mind. Here is one of my favorite films, shot entirely with a Nokia cell phone by Sumit Roy.

Telefonul fara fir
Palma
si asta:

I have already mentioned my predilection for bubbling over and this blog entry couldn’t help but effervesce a few profoundly nourishing moments that have occured over the last few weeks.

Pangea Day

Well there were both snacks and cuddling up in this household. It was an incredible event and as predicted I did get through many a kleenex during the 4 hours. For those of you who wanted to be part of it but couldn’t you can still view the films that were shown at Pangea.org. For those of you who did watch they have posted more award winning films to the line up. I HIGHLY recommend that you take some time to watch a selection and take part next year. It was heart warming to see the audiences around the world, even the British audience who were gathered outside Somerset House in the middle of the night were dancing to the closing ‘World Drum circle’. Scholar and writer Karen Armstrong closed the event with a call to action, “Look into your own heart and discover what it is that gives you pain and then refuse under any circumstance what so ever to inflict that pain on any body else”.

Serious Play

This was a nourishing highlight that had me giddy with anticipation. Three days of inspirational speakers, rope jumping and yummy food and goodies. This biannual event held by Art Center College of Design covered topics as vast as the next rover that is going to land on Mars, the intelligence of crows, what it is like to live a full and curious life as a double amputee, the coke and mentos guys, Origami as science, and visionary architecture, all under the guise of PLAY a necessary part of who we are. It was a mind expanding gathering of topics and people that will keep me on a high for weeks. But the nourishing story here is the topic of Play in our lives, Stuart Brown the Founder of the National Institute for Play stated that the opposite of play is NOT work it is in fact Depression. So if you feel you haven’t played recently, try it on, you will feel so much better for moving, laughing, going fast, twirling around, communicating playfully or bonding with others on a team. Children do not have the monopoly on play they just do it so well! Act like a child just once this week and feel your heart soar.

Spring Cleaning

Yes really, in fact we will be having a nourishing conversation on this very subject very soon. In the meantime I wanted to share that we had several spring cleaning conundrums; firstly was the disposal of our 9 year old sofa. It has served us so well across four moves in three states, it has been with us through the arm waving days of Dawsons Creek, the heady days of Gilmore Girl romance, seen us be held in suspense by Aaron Sorkin’s West Wing and it now sits to witness all the drama of Grey’s Anatomy. It has also endured a few xbox ’sit ins’, many thrills and spills and a burrowing puppy. It really is ‘time’ yet given all we had been through together we now seem to be hanging on to it out of sentimentality compounded by the graphic visual of our sofa balancing on the top of a landfill. Our much considered solution was to contact greendumptruck who are going to responsibly remove our old faithful (with ceremony) to make way for our new ‘green’ construction hemp sofa which brings me both to my point and the link that I have promised to share with many of you. The Story of Stuff, the animation on this site takes around 20 minutes to watch but it is well worth it if you want a recap on what the manufacturing and disposal chain really looks like or to consider your role as consumer, to help with some of your own spring cleaning decisions and more importantly to share with less enlightened souls than yourself.

I did however recently enter full blown consumer mode when buying the cleaning products to take on said cleaning. Having tried many green cleaners and using baking soda in the tub (it works!) I finally decided to convert all our products to Mrs Myers, our house will be smelling of lemon verbena some time soon, no really it will…..

Another area that saw a clean out was the make-up drawer. Just over a year ago I was made aware of ‘Skindeep’ the cosmetics database and I have to admit that even after reading about the lethal chemicals that were regularly making contact with my skin when they really shouldn’t even be coming within 2 feet of me, I still clung on to that Dior mascara and that Urban Decay sparkly green eyeshadow. So have I thrown everything out? No. But I have made a considerable dent, pretty much have my ‘chemicals of choice’ under control and a renewed commitment to making sure what comes into the house and gets lathered onto our faces or bodies is harmless. To see what might be toxic in your products check out Skindeep.

The last element I want to include in this topic was the question ‘Where was all our electricity being used?’ We finally made a concerted effort to go around the house plugging and unplugging all our appliances until we got our electric meter disc to spin at a speed that was a lot more satisfactory to our pockets and the planet. This has included actively unplugging all our chargers when not charging a phone, headset or computer and turning our computers off (not just to sleep) and unplugging them EVERY time they are not in use. It has made an incredible difference to our bill!

The awareness of what stuff we have in our house (yes there is still more to tackle, the comic collection REALLY needs to be sold – hint) but the first phase clean out has made me feel lighter, I have a sense of accomplishment and I am more able to concentrate on some of the priorities in my life. It is amazing what the benefits of a clean out can be.

Coachella

I didn’t make it out there this year but as a result of this West Coast desert festival we had a group of good friends come visit with us before they traveled back East. For me being able to kick back with good friends around the BBQ is very high on my list of nourishing things. Marc and I have decided that one of our nourishing intentions for the summer will be to have many stress free BBQ’s and make the most of our home.

Have a fabulous week…
