Here’s a quick, simple review of Thunderbird Coffee’s delicious peanut butter & jell

Here’s a quick, simple review of Thunderbird Coffee’s delicious peanut butter & jelly panino:

Thunderbird, formerly Clementine’s, underwent the name change in September, which irked a lot of people who didn’t realize that both the Thunderbird location on Koenig and Clementine’s were managed/owned by the same people! Nothing changed about this lovely little East side jewel, fortunately, and they still continue to serve what I opine is the best PB&J sandwich on earth.

I needz a DSLR and prime lenz.

At the corner of Manor Road and Breeze Terrace lies the cutest coffeehouse that ever was — always bustling with artisans, musicians, and the hipster intelligentsia working on their next big project. Seating indoors is a rarity, but that’s not an issue, seeing as how the outdoor benches and tables, on a good day, are a refreshing view.

I ordered the PB&J panino ($3.99), a simple creamy peanut butter/strawberry jam sandwich on ciabatta, grilled. Truth be told, there is probably no way to beautifully present a PB&J grilled panino, so when I took it apart for photo purposes, the bread flaked and stuck — but what it lacks in presentation, it makes up for in tastiness. Warm, buttery bread flaking off, strawberry jam and peanut butter offered in generous portions = deliciousness.

I also had Thunderbird’s largest Americano, and being a former coffee master at Starbucks and a barista at It’s a Grind, I felt like I at least had a little insight going in as to how good their espresso is. Rest assured, it’s great. They hand-tamp their espresso grounds, which I don’t see very much of often, but I think it shows in their coffee. It was rich, robust and the perfect accompaniment to my panino.

Thunderbird is also a sort of Mecca for cultured East Austinites — I’ve seen their productions and the shows they throw on, and they are typically nothing short of amazing. One such show featured all 4 discs of The Flaming Lips’ album “Zaireeka”, for which dozens of people showed up.

I’d like to be less glowing in a review, but there’s no denying it: Thunderbird gets the full 5/5 stars.

Well, sadly I don’t have that problem this Thanksgiving as we traveled south to my dear husban

Well, sadly I don’t have that problem this Thanksgiving as we traveled south to my dear husband’s father’s home this year. It’s a shame because the left-overs is probably one of my favorite parts of Thanksgiving turkey. I know the old joke, “turkey…again?”…and the one where everybody had a turkey sandwich on the first day back to school. But I like turkey sandwiches. Just old plain turkey breast on white bread with some lettuce and mayonnaise…it’s comfort food. But it can get tiresome after a while, so here as some ideas for you to use to shake things up.

Let’s start with a family favorite – Gail’s Turkey Tacos. Why they are called Turkey Tacos is kind of beyond me, they really are more enchilada looking, but I guess the toppings are more taco like…This was a staple after Thanksgiving in my husband’s home, brought to the table by his Tex-Mex cooking mom Gail Austin. Gail has since passed, but the family tradition lives on.

Gail’s Turkey Tacos

Gail's Turkey Tacos

Like I said before, I like a plain old turkey sandwich. You can always add some cranberry relish, tomatoes, whatever you like. I also like a plain hot turkey sandwich, layer of bread, layer of stuffing, some relish, turkey slices, pour some hot gravy over the top…a sandwich that can be found in diners across America. How about something a little different. Here’s my take on an Italian Style Turkey Panini. I didn’t have a Panini grill, so I created my version using a grill pan, plate and can of pork and beans. Worked pretty darn well too.

Italian Style Turkey Panini

Italian Style Turkey Panini

And last but not least, what better to warm you up as the days cool down. Left-overs Turkey Soup, that’s what. You could make the soup base in your crock-pot or slow cooker, or just let it simmer on top of the stove.

Left-overs Turkey Soup

Left-overs Turkey Soup

LindySez - SoSouMe – I like left-overs. I think I might just have to have a Christmas turkey this year…

As the plaintive cries ringing out from FAI headquarters become ever more pitiful, I think it’

As the plaintive cries ringing out from FAI headquarters become ever more pitiful, I think it’s time to have a stern word. You’re not invited to the World Cup Party. It isn’t like the craic. It’s not more the merrier.

We should first consider the hideous implications of an extra team on the format of the Panini sticker album. The publishers will already have to squeeze North Korea onto the one page at the back without having to slot the Irish in somewhere.

And then we should ponder on the dangerous precedent set by ushering a team into a latter round on the grounds of injustice. Cast your mind back to the World Cup in Mexico in 1986. On this basis we’d have had five teams lining-up in the semi-finals after Diego Maradona’s handball against England. We’d have witnessed a scenario where one team would have received a bye into to final. Which is not ideal.

The mathemetical chaos would not have been resolved by time of the final as three teams pitched up at the Azteca Stadium to battle out it for the trophy. Not only would one team be forced to get ready in the car park because of a shortage of changing rooms, but the only reasonable means of finding a winner would be a game of rock-paper-scissors. And as we all know, England always lose at rock-paper-scissors.

If you are like us, you are nowhere near the malls today!!

* Makes two sandwiches.

Ingredients:
4 slices sourdough bread (or whatever leftover bread you have)
2 tablespoons butter, softened
4 thin slices of Swiss or Provolone cheese
8 thin slices of leftover turkey (white or dark meat, your choice!)
A couple spoonfuls of leftover cranberry sauce or gravy (your choice…depends on your mood!)
A couple spoonfuls of leftover stuffing (optional)
Mayonnaise, to spread on bread
Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:
1. Spread butter on one side of each piece of bread. Spread mayonnaise on other side of bread, then layer with one slice of cheese, four slices of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce or gravy (or both). Then sprinkle with a pinch of salt and pepper, and follow with another slice of cheese.

2. Top with second piece of bread, butter side out.

3. Place on Panini grill over medium-high heat; put lid of Panini grill down to put weight on the sandwich while it cooks.

4. Allow sandwiches to cook for about 3-7 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove, slice on a diagonal, and serve warm.

In einigen Bildungseinrichtungen herrscht bereits radikales Datschkarten-Verbot.

Was guckst Du denn so?”

“Sponge Bob.”

Alles klar, keine weiteren Fragen.

538 Ramona St
Palo Alto, CA 94301
(650) 322-6872
www.coupacafe.com

I think this is one of the first places where I really felt like I ordered the wrong item(s) on the menu. A couple of friends and I wanted to have a lunch date so we looked up a few places on Yelp! and settled on this little cafe based on the positive feedback and the enticing photos. It was a little confusing at first because its door wasn’t a typical glass door. The door looked like it belonged to somebody’s house so we actually walked passed it a few times before finally deciding that it must be the right place.

I had read sooo many good reviews about the Spicy Maya Hot Chocolate so of course I wanted to try it out. While I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be about the taste, I do have to give them an ‘A’ for presentation. I guess I shouldn’t be complaining since how elaborate can you be with spicy hot chocolate? It was good, but it tasted exactly like the spicy hot chocolate that my roommate in college used to make…and she would just buy the mix at a regular grocery store in the Hispanic foods section. If you’re craving spicy hot chocolate, just buy the mix from the store. It’s much cheaper.

As for the food, none of us were too hungry so we wanted to sample California Mozzzrella arepa and Mediterranean panini. The panini was okay… nothing special but it wasn’t bad either. However, the only taste that was prominent were the sun-dried tomatos. I couldn’t make out the mozzarella or the pesto that was supposed to be in it. Next time I would probably order a different flavored panini…or just go to Panera Bread.

As for the arepas that we ordered, I found that dish to be rather bland. It might be because the one we ordered only has sun-dried tomatos, mozzarella, and basil. I personally didn’t like the white cornmeal griddle for the taste or the texture. That is just my opinion though. I definitely was expecting more but since arepas are pretty much a snack food, I guess it makes sense that there wasn’t as much substance as I expected.

Even though I wasn’t impressed with what I ate here, I would still be willing to give this place a second chance. A lot of their other items on the menu look good and I’m surprised I didn’t order empanadas! Honestly, I think it’s what I ordered that dampened my experience here. If I ever come back again, I’ll definitely be ordering something that has more flavor.

Here are the cool cards Mario sent when I finally got off my lazy butt and sent him a SASE:

First the 2009 Upper Deck Football Heroes...

I’m trying to spread the love by sending and trading most of the cards received from Mario to those who will appreciate them more than I could ever hope to. Paul Hornung is offered to Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius, and Tony Dorsett is now officially offered to BigD of Hey That’s Mine. I’m giving both Big Bens to a Steelers fan I know (other one coming up). The Maynard/Biletnikoff is the only for sure keeper from this scan, although the Alan Page is tempting, to get a TTM auto maybe. How epic would that look?

As it is, Alan Page, Plax, Calvin Johnson, Romo/Aikman, and the volleyball dude are available.

Beethoven, Florence Nightingale, and a couple Chicago legends...

Bobby Hull and Mike Ditka are the reason I got these cards in the first place, so they ain’t going anywhere. I dunno about the historical peoples though.

Kristi Yamaguchi and some rock-headed Presidents...

I used to have a crush on Kristi in my teenage years. Heh… :d

Do the Presidents look a lil’ toony to anyone else, or is it just me?

Yeah Woodstock! Woo!

Are there any bloggers out there who were at the original?

Malkin/Big Ben

This is also going to my Steeler fan friend.

Now we get to the higher end, a rare taste for me. But a yummy taste it is.

Prime Jersey or Patch (whichever you prefer) #ed /50

This one I offered up for BigD’s Hines Ward collecting son. I got a little something for the whole gang, if they want ‘em, that is.

And if they can wait till 2010 to pull off the trade. I’m a slow trader (slow at doing nearly everything, really) to start with, but I think I’ve got trades going with half the card bloggers right now. At least it seems that way, not to mention McCann’s great card blogger Secret Santa thing. I’m very excited about dat though, and hopefully the person I drew will be too.

Prime Time Prime (Jumbo) Jersey #ed 3/5!

I’m not trading away this one, I really like this one. It’s purrty. I may have to sell it at some point sadly though. I’m poor like dirt. I have iffy mental health as an excuse, but I’ve got to try and make good, the sooner the better, and that’ll take some moneys to start with.

Incidentally, if you’d like to commission a sketch card, gimme a shout. You can see a few recent examples on my blog. I’m okay I guess, especially with portraityness.

Enough shameless and very awkwardly done self-promotion. Last card!

More prime jersey patches, going way back with Frank Gifford #ed /25

That was a heckuva box Mario busted, all three game-used being of the prime jersey variety, if not the sickest of patches. I like Absolute Memorabilia, one day I will be able to afford a box of it without breaking the bank, or even poking it softly. I have no intention of being a poor bum my whole life.

That’s all for what I got from big man of the blogosphere. Maybe I’ll win some stuff from him again (and sign up for Card Corner Club @VOTC) if I can figure out what the heck happened with my Ning password. :/

Oh yeah, congrats to Real Salt Lake on taking down the evil empire of David Beckham and Landon Donovan. I hope it doesn’t effect the value of my Beckham jersey card though (scans to come when I get it scanned).

And big ups for Matthew Stafford showing some Leftwich-ian toughness in getting the win against the Browns in a surprising shootout.

Until our next…(Besos)

The Hobby is filled with a ton of strange and unusually cards you normally wouldn’t expect to

The Hobby is filled with a ton of strange and unusually cards you normally wouldn’t expect to find in a pack. With so many products based around historical figures and events, it shouldn’t surprise you that Thanksgiving has found its way into people’s collections. Upper Deck and Panini (Donruss at the time) steal the show when it comes to Thanksgiving themed trading cards. Most of them aren’t worth very much, but to player/set collectors they could possible fill that hole which has been in their collection for years.

From 2006 to 2008, Donruss printed base cards of their popular football products containing their Thanksgiving logo slapped on the front. There were a few ways you could obtain these. In 2006, Beckett inserted some of them into issues of Beckett Football Card Monthly. You could also get team sets if you attended the football game that was playing that Thanksgiving Day. Finally, Donruss inserted some of them in packs of their football cards that year. From 2007 to 2008 you could get them at the stadium on Thanksgiving Day or pull them from packs. Some of these cards contain rookies of popular (at the time they were popular) players such as Reggie Bush, Marshawn Lynch, and Jamarcus Russell.

This year’s Upper Deck A Piece of History probably contains Thanksgiving’s two best cards in existence. The one above features the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth and the one below could basically be considered Thanksgiving Day’s rookie card. Scholars have debated for years when and where Thanksgiving originally started, but most have agreed upon the year 1621 at the Plymouth Plantation. Its a topic that could be discussed by historians way into the night much like the topic of when and where someone picked up a stick and said lets play baseball. I’m sure if pieces of the Mayflower were available for sale, Upper Deck would be all over them to insert into the next version of A Piece of History.

I’m very very very happy to be sitting on my couch, on land, with my kitty, let me tell you. Apologies to Rosie for being a total crybaby . Now I’m a little freaked that I am going to be flying so much in the next month actually…

Anyway, aside from that we had a very nice last day in Sydney starting with a bit of a sleep in, banana oats which I made for us (she had hers just with PB but I added a little dried apple, sultanas and PB to mine).

This bar a few hours later whilst on the ferry from Watson’s Bay to the city, along with a skinny capp.

Just as yummy as the apple crumble one by the way.

Some snaps from the ferry! It was much much cooler today which was quite refreshing . As you can see it was windy on the ferry! That is the Sydney Opera House in the background.

And here is the lovely harbour bridge.

We had a nice walk around the shops in the Strand Arcade and QVB Building and shared a piece of toasted banana bread. Amazing, enough said. Love this stuff!

Then we met up with Merilyn for lunch at La Cantina in the CBD. We just had casual Panini’s. I had the chicken, avocado and cheese with pesto and it came with a Greek salad.

This was very very tasty and exactly what I was craving, though later it left me with indigestion . I am really finding lately that white breads and pizzas are giving me bad indigestion so I’m going to have to remember to avoid them… that or it could be that I’ve eaten lots of chicken this past week and its not agreeing with me…

Merilyn told us about a cute cupcake store called Cupcakes on Pitt where they sell mini cupcakes for $2 so we walked past on our way to get a cab. I chose the Oreo (and no it doesn’t come with a bite taken out of the biscuit Rosie just decided she would start eating mine before I snapped it ).

It was tasty but I prefer Rosie and Lily’s Magnolia Bakery buttercream icing from the other day . Love the mini size, Oreo touch and super cute decorating though!

Plane food = tasty and entertained us for 20 minutes. Unfortunately plates then started falling all over the place shortly after…

Soy chicken with rice, bread roil, cheese and crackers, tiny toblerone.

Jeremy and Eva picked us up from the airport and dropped me home (thanks!!) and I was welcomed by Little, a clean house and some food in the fridge from Adam’s mum (thanks!!).

This was a potato rosti that I nuked for 2 minutes and was very tasty. Just having a cup of Rooibos (oh how I’ve missed thee – must remember to pack for Hawaii) and am heading to bed soon. E.X.H.A.U.S.T.E.D.

Work tomorrow – 4 days to go!!!

My daughter has an away basketball tournament this weekend, that means the parents are looking for an upgrade on pizza and have asked me for a reprise on the last tournament: mortadella and capocollo panini; prosciutto wrapped breadsticks; and hot and mild cacciatore. Last time I expected the kids to focus on the sandwiches and leave the prosciutto and cacciatore for the parents, boy was I wrong! It could be the Italian influence of Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors, but I think kids today have been exposed to many more foods and appreciate a more sophisticated taste at a younger age.

I am happy to put the spread on because it really is very easy. There might be a couple things on the planet that taste better than cacciatore, but not with so little prep time. When time is of the essence, all you need is a mild and a hot cacciatore. Slice on a diagonal, lay out artistically and you are done. Honestly, people will tell you these are amazing. I like to slice the hot a little thinner to so I can get people to try it. I read the other day that chili peppers are the fastest growing spice in the world; people are eating more spicy things and spicier things.

With just a little more time I go with prosciutto wrapped around a bread stick. Cut a slice in half lengthwise and wrap down half the breadstick. My personal favourite is mortadella on the breadstick, but last time I learned it can only be done just before serving or the breadstick goes soggy. Sometimes I drape the mortadella, put the breadsticks in a glass and let people wrap their own.

For Panini I prefer the Italian way, bread and deli meat; nothing else to dilute the taste.

Wow, I was watching MMA all night and I didn’t realize the Knicks finally won a game.

This is the first pack of anything Panini that I opened but I expect I’ll be buying a lot more Panini products in the future. According to the site, this product should have been released early October but I can’t find it in most of the places where I buy my cards (Target and the two hobby stores near me). The K-mart near where I work just got the rack packs (Panini spells it Rak Pak) for sale. I really don’t know too much about 2009 Panini Prestige but I’m willing to give it a shot.

The top:
Udonis Haslem
Derrick Rose
David Lee
Danny Green
Hasheem Thabeet
Brandon Jennings
Nate Thurmond
Sidney Moncrief

The bottom:
Elton Brand
Marquis Daniels
Richard Jefferson
Dwyane Wade
Emeka Okafor
Ben Gordon Hardcourt Heroes
Clyde Drexler
Dennis Rodman

This product definitely feels like something Donruss would do and it doesn’t really excite me. I don’t know if Prestige is a low tier (base) or mid tier product but I much rather spend $5 and get 36 cards rather than just 16. Still I got a nice collection of stars, legends and rookies. Of all the rookies this year I have been getting Hasheem Thabeet the most. I hope this is a good thing. But I also believe I also got my first Brandon Jennings rookie card. Jennings has looked great so far and it is looking like the Knicks made a mistake passing him for Jordan Hill but it is far too early to say that for sure.

Anyways, the Card of the Game (CotG) is easily David Lee. Lee seems to be always looking to improve and he would be a good complement to any star player the Knicks sign in 2010. But it is unclear whether he has a future with the Knicks after this year and this is unfortunate.
