Just when I thought I was done with the fashion world, here isAlexander McQueen’s offering for FW ‘08 His line is fashioned around the Victorian era, as well as Colonial India. But I must say, this line is decidedly STEAMPUNK. And that got my attention…

McQueen FW '08 - Decidedly Steampunk

It has recently dawned on me that this sub-sub culture is now becoming mainstream. Should I be worried?

I have watched and illustrated fashion for many years, and the latest trend (denim) just about killed it for me all together. I am not a label freaking fashionista. I would rather be restoring something than shopping. I have a passion for all things old, made new again. Literally. I find old brass, I have to polish it. I can’t help it. My little fetish turned into quite the obsession. I found that there was a term for technogeeks like me born of another time, and suddenly the world of Steampunk opened up to me. It was then that I realized that I was not alone in this madness.

With such movies as Hellboy II, (I’ve only seen the previews) and a slew of older movies (Brazil, City of Lost Children, Pan’s Labyrinth, etc.), it is obvious that the best directors have been onto it for years.

I have decided not to worry about fashion’s encroachment on our little heaven of old gears and oxidized brass. There are only so many who can truly appreciate the beauty of this art form of functional parts we have come to cherish. Besides, I think McQueen was spot on. Bravo chap! This we won’t be seeing at Forever 21.
