Here’s my Kitchen. As you can see there is very limited bench space which usually requires me to clean as I go when cooking. I have a 4 burner gas stove top, although it’s really difficult to fit 4 pans on at once. Underneath is an electric oven which has all kinds of awesome settings and a grill. Taking up far too much bench space is the microwave, rarely used, but no other place to put it other than outside, and finally a dishwasher (lifesaver). I have 2 cupboards for food, under the sink lives all my pots and pans and bakeware, and finally, another cupboard with shelves where the plates, cups and glasses, herbs, spices and tea live.

Here are my pans. They are Jamie Oliver, non-stick. I heart them.

I’m yet to learn the actually names of each knife. But I use them all regularly, apart from the bread knife as I rarely buy bread that’s not already sliced.

When I heard Nezzie banging pots and pans in her kitchen, I knew there was trouble in paradise. I asked Moe what happened and he told me…

“Nezzie’s not speakin’ to me. She’s been mad since last night. Before she ‘clammed up’ on me she said…

Moses, apologize right now and I’ll forgive your foolishness. I don’t want to go to bed angry.”

I asked Moe what did he do to upset her. And he told me…

“She’s going to Arizona and she asked me if I’ll miss her. I said, ‘If I miss you, I’ll reload and try again.”

I suggested he apologize.

1. Canapès de pa de motlle

Ingredients:

pa de motlle sense crosta

patés variats (fines herbes, salmó, tonyina…)

philadelphia

maionesa

olives

salsitxes

ous de guatlla (fregits i bullits)

gambes pelades

kiwi

salmó fumat

formatge

qualsevol cosa que us agradi!

Ingredients:

Pasta filo (només l’he trobada al Corte Inglés i al Bon preu).

Tomàquet Cherry

Orenga

All

Formatge de cabra

Mantega

3. Pasta filo farcida de gambes i xampinyons

Ingredients:

Pasta filo

Xampinyons

Gambes

Ceba

Carbassó

1 cullerada de farina

2 cullerades de llet

Mantega

Sal

Jo n’he utilitzat 5 i m’han sortit 24)

“Oblees” (les típiques per fer crestes)

oli

sal

Se li afegeix sal i alfàbrega.

Almost every Friday night in the general area there is an auction. I have been going to auctions with my parents since I was a kid, and I guess that it’s gotten into my blood or something, because I REALLY like going now that i have money of my own. The key of course is that if you are planning on bidding on any items, to figure out how much you are willing to spend on said items before actually bidding… it’s safer that way, because then you know when to stop and don’t get taken over by adrenaline (although if you’re an auction frequenter, we’ve all had those moments too).

A few months ago I was at an auction and in my opinion I got a steal! They had several different cake plates, and I was eyeing one that had a glass bottom with a silver foot. Well, I had made up my mind that I wouldn’t spend too much, and I got it for $15!

The other thing that I was really tickled with was a box full of pans, most of them brand new and in the package. I ended up getting the entire box for $35. It was a little bit more than I wanted to spend, but my parents were with me, and what’s funny is that if I hadn’t gotten them for that price, they were going to bid on them for me. I have awesome parents. So here are my auction finds:

Everything in the box on the right is brand new and in the packages. The pans and cheese grater that are on the table also came in the box lot, and if they have been used, they were kept in FANTASTIC shape. So far I’ve used some of the loaf pans, and the mini fluted pans, and the mini heart pans. They work really great and release the cake very easily. I didn’t really need the mini muffin pans because I have several already, but I guess that it doesn’t hurt to have some extras. All things considered, I think that I got a GREAT deal and I’m really happy about the purchase.

A lot of the things in our house have been purchased at auctions. We got our dining room suit (cherry I believe), our dining room table and chairs, and our living room furniture (all leather, wood inlay details, with a large couch, loveseat, large chair and ottoman) all at auctions. The best part is that even though the stuff is used, we couldn’t have afforded the quality of items brand new that we have, so it’s really great. I like auctions a lot. If you’ve never been to one I’d highly recommend it, they’re an adrenaline rush on top of finding some great deals and sometimes some unique finds!

Eh no, I’m not speaking about beauty and plastic surgery, but just about pans and molds. Yeste

Eh no, I’m not speaking about beauty and plastic surgery, but just about pans and molds.

Yesterday for the first time i discovered someone invented silicone pans and i was just horrified.

How can you cook in a plastic thing? what is going to happen to the taste and to the nice crust? Then i started to realize the positive points of the silicone, like the fact that nothing will stick on the mold and everything will come out perfectly shaped.

I looked a bit in internet and i found lots of positive comments and i decided to give it a try.

As some of you knows, yesterday i look all day in internet for a ring mold or baking pan, and i couldn’t find any cheap shop with something like this. The only solution seemed to be John Lewis, not so cheap but at least open until late and very well equipped.

So to cut down the story, at the end i bought a silicone mold but I’m not so convinced now. The major problem is that the mold is not so deep and i think at the end everything will come out in the oven. The second problem is that for the next dish i absolutely need the crust and i want to be sure the mold will make it. Finally i have some doubt about the taste and the fact to put silicone in the oven.

Has anyone tried one before? is it better to buy something like this just for little cakes or for very strange shapes? Or i just need to get used?

Please let me know, I’m very interested. For the moment i think i won’t risk and i will go to exchange it with a traditional one!

And what do you prefer more?

Use them all the time when playing baseball and soccer. I use it when I am working outside. It really works. The insects just veer around you. All this time you’ve just been putting Bounce in the dryer!
It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice.
Spread sheets around foundation areas, or in trailers, or cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle.
It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don’t get opened too often.
It repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.
Eliminate static electricity from your television (or computer) screen..
Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.
Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce.
To freshen the air in your home – Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet.
Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner.
Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew.
Prevent musty suitcases.. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.
To freshen the air in your car – Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat .
Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan.
Eliminate odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.
Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the lose hairs.
Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling.
Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth..
Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.
Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight.
Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away.
Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. It will keep them smelling fresh.
Wet a Bounce sheet, hose down your car, and wipe love-bugs off easily with the wet Bounce.

Bounce does a lot more than remove static cling. My family was out for fish and chips today at a boathouse restaurant. We had a great meal and while we were eating, we noticed Bounce Dryer Sheets tacked up on the centre post at our table. We were told they are there to keep the wasps away. Boy did they work!

I got home and researched what else they do and this is what I found:

1. All this time you’ve just been putting Bounce in the dryer! It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice.

2. Put Bounce around foundation areas, or in trailers, or cars that are parked for a time. Will keep mice from getting in.

14. Eliminate odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.

15. Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will
magnetically attract all the loose hairs.

16. Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling.

17. Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth.

18. Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.

19. Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight.

20. Golfers put a Bounce sheet! In their back pocket to keep the bees away.

21. Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. It will keep them smelling fresh.

22. Pack a sheet in with summer/winter clothes when putting them away.

23. Put bay leaves in your cabinets to rid your house of ants. Just put one where the ants are and they will leave.

24. Horse and buggy drives take a dryer sheet and rub it on their arms and face, to repel mosquitoes.

So in college you probably don’t have much room, or much money to buy fancy appliances. That’s ok–wait until you’ve got a house or your wedding gift registry to get high-tech, expensive, or just plain big kitchen gadgets. You don’t want to be lugging appliances from dorm room to dorm room each semester. It’s true that I have more kitchen gadgets than the average student, but I also cook more than the average student and I use my stuff fairly often. Here are some kitchen necessities. A lot of these can be found at your local thrift store–it’s amazing what people give away when they de-clutter their own kitchens! Now silverware and things like tongs, spatulas, ladles, etc. are a given, so I won’t list those, but here are my…

Must-Haves: not in any particular order

1. Mixing bowls: preferably a few of varying sizes. These are good for baking and for mixing anything really…they can double as serving bowls if they look halfway decent.

2. Measuring cups & spoons: you need ‘em. After you cook for awhile, you start to become better at estimating measurements, but to start you need a set of measuring spoons, a set of measuring cups, and a liquid measuring cup would be nice too (these look like mini-pitchers and usually have a pour-spout, and often measure things in ounces and millimeters as well as cups.)

TIP: Even if you get good at measuring by sight, don’t do it when baking!! Baking measurements are very precise and involve chemical reactions that just won’t be right if you use, say, a teaspoon of baking soda instead of a tablespoon.

3. A couple of good frying pans, also in varying sizes. Get one small and one large to start if you’re on a budget. I prefer non-stick, but many people don’t like to use Teflon-coated pans. Stainless steel are good too, but are sometimes pricey. Good places to buy cheap sets of starter pans: Sam’s Club (their Member’s Mark brand sells some), and places like TJ Maxx often have them. I’ve gotten pans at both places.

*If you buy Teflon-coated pans used, make sure the Teflon is not flaking off from being scratched. This means it’s too old and shouldn’t be used anymore–Teflon is a carcinogen when ingested.*

4. A couple of good saucepans. Pots don’t really need to be Teflon-coated. A small one, a medium one, and maybe a bigger one with a lid (sometimes called a Dutch Oven) to make bigger portions, but that’s probably optional for most. Again, Sam’s Club or TJ Maxx are good places. Sometimes department stores can have good deals on pots and pans too if you check the sales.

5. Good knives!! And a cutting board or two–I like plastic because it doesn’t absorb food tastes, smells, or germs like wood does. Knives are really essential, and perhaps the most important thing for me to have in my kitchen. In fact, the purchase I’m probably most excited to make in my adult life is an expensive set of knives. Really. The ones I have now are from various places. Several good ones are actually from TJ Maxx, a couple are from Ikea, and a couple are from who-knows-where. You can get knife sets anywhere, but try to get a starter set with a sharpener, and actually use the sharpener! You can find videos online of how to sharpen knives. I recommend a chefs knife, a paring knife, and something in-between to start. Google “different kinds of kitchen knives” to get more of an idea of which knives are used for what purposes, or look back here for a post on it in the future.

From top: chef's knife, utility knife, paring knife, kitchen shears.

Not Must-Haves, but Certainly Fun-to-Haves:

1. A blender or food processor. While these aren’t the same thing, they can often both get the job done. If you’re going to buy just one, get the blender–it’s a little more versatile in my opinion, and you can use it on margarita night! I actually have a combination blender-food processor that I got at Sam’s Club for a really good price. While it doesn’t have as much power as a blender that I could buy alone, it’s good for what I need it for right now.

2. A cast-iron skillet. I love cast-iron skillets. They heat up fast and retain heat, so they take some getting used to, but they cook things really well and are great for things like gravy, when you need a little crust and a little pan drippings from whatever you’re cooking, since cast-irons are not non-stick.

3. Stock pots. These are large pots that you’ve probably seen your mom or grandma make soup in. They’re good for, well, making stock. Or making things that just won’t fit into little saucepans.

4. Electric mixer. I have a Kitchen-Aid mixer and it is my absolute favorite kitchen item. I use it all the time, for things from mixing bread dough to making cakes to mashing potatoes. These are expensive, and fairly heavy, but they’ll last forever and you really can use it for so many things, plus there are all kinds of fun attachments to get for it–like a pasta maker! It’s perfectly fine if you just have a hand-mixer (or, frankly, a wooden spoon and elbow grease) at this point though.

5. A Crockpot. Great tool for busy people: you stick a bunch of stuff in when you wake up in the morning, turn it on low all day, and when you get home you have delicious food. Presto! I have a fairly small Crockpot that I actually got so I could cook in my dorm room–probably not allowed. Sometimes I wish I had a bigger one, but this actually works out for me most of the time. You can make some mean pulled-pork sandwiches with a Crockpot.

So those are the kitchen essentials. Try cooking with the bare minimum first, and see what you’re always wishing you had. Always reaching for a slotted spoon but don’t have one? Then get one. Wish you had a pan that could cook extra eggs for when you have people over? Then maybe it’s time for a bigger frying pan. Get what you need and you’ll be good to go!
