As history has revealed, no institution stands forever. Ubars are overthrown, cities are left for ruin….one great outlaw or panther tribe become instinct….only to find a new Ubar, a new city, a new group of rebellions with different ideas. Perhaps brute strength and a lust for power should be factored in as well. However, many times, these coups are the act of dreamers….people who believe in a higher cause.

So the question begs itself….when will it be the turn of the kajirae and kajiri? The signs are already present in many cities. Boys and girls trained in bows and swords….able to take down the mightiest warrior with a well-aimed stone. In fact in some of the outlaw tribes, there are kajirae and kajiri that perform more as leaders than the Masters or Mistresses that own them. They have respect and a following. I think of one boy in particular.

One could also make the argument the revolution has already begun by the kajirae. After all, don’t most rebellious girls find themselves bearing arms as Panthers? I know of one such kajira who not only became a mighty Panther, but has now become a well-respected leader among tribes.

Many of the Lifestylers boycotted the few male  panther tribes that formed several moons ago, protesting they did not exist by scripture. However, as a wise commentator pointed out, unless you are reenacting scenes of the scripture as a play, the story itself is an organic, breathing idea that takes form as more ideas are involved….the story molds itself with interpretations.

So why not male panthers? Disgruntled boys scavaging in the woods as a rebellious act against those who oppress them. It sounds plausible and is not wholly without logic to the development of the scriptures. In fact, if we uphold to the scrptures, kajiri never even wore a collar, as they were men still. One of the most wonderful aspects of any adventure are the possibilities that wait. Is it such a stretch that kajiri, men who have found themselves to the service of another, do not rebel and live as a tribe in the densest part of the Northern Wood?

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is seeking information about a decapitated panther carcass found along the Florida Turnpike near the Osceola and Indian River county line Thursday. Anyone with information can call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922; they can remain anonymous and may be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward if their information leads to an arrest.

FWC officers responded to a report of the dead panther about 2 p.m. Thursday Nov. 19. The carcass was on the shoulder of the road on the southbound side of the turnpike in the southernmost portion of Osceola County, near Yeehaw Junction.

“The partially decomposed remains appear to be that of an endangered Florida panther,” said FWC Lt. Rick Brown. “It also appears someone cut off the head.  We encourage anyone who knows anything about this to call Wildlife Alert as soon as possible.”

In der Raubkatzen-Reihe des beliebten Betriebssystemes gab es bisher “Cheetah” (10.0), ”Puma” (10.1), “Jaguar” (10.2), Panther® (10.3), Tiger® (10.4), Leopard® (10.5) und den aktuellen “Snow Leopard”® (10.6).

Wie wird wohl das OS X 10.7 heißen? Lion? Wenn die Markenrechte des bekannten Schokoriegel dadurch nicht verletzt werden, wäre dies eine durchaus denkbare Option. Auch “Sibirian Tiger” klingt nach Apple-Like. Lassen wir uns überraschen.

Super Zaxxon beziehungsweise ursprünglich nur Zaxxon genannt, ist ein klassisches Arcade-Spiel aus dem Jahre 1982. Der Entwickler Sega schuf mit diesem Spiel eine Art Shoot’em up, welches man mit der Kontrolle eines Raumschiffs meistern soll. Meistern deshalb, weil einem auf dem Flug, wie soll es auch anders sein, zahlreiche Gegner entgegen fliegen, die nur darauf aus sind, dich bzw. dein Raumschiff vom “Himmel” zu holen. Daher bleibt dir nichts anderes übrig, als jene ebenfalls zu beschießen und somit ins Jenseits zu befördern. Umso mehr Gegner man besiegt und je weiter man sich durch die kosmische Basis kämpft, desto mehr Punkte gibt es dafür, was demzufolge eine Highscore-Jagd fördern soll. Schließlich wurde es, wie so viele Spiele aus diesem Zeitalter, auf dem Atari 2600 veröffentlicht, wo das Erzielen von Rekordpunktzahlen an der Tagesordnung und notwendig für’s Geschäft war. Als weitere Startplattform ist der ColecoVision zu nennen.

Das Besondere an Zaxxon war der Einsatz einer isometrischen Perspektive. Mit deren Hilfe konnte eine gewisse räumliche Tiefe erzeugt werden, weshalb man es kurzerhand als quasi-3D-Scroller bezeichnen kann. Nerdig ausgedrückt, wäre das  dann ein Upper-Right-Diagonal-Scroller – jedoch wäre es damit nur halb beschrieben. Es gibt nämlich desweiteren die Möglichkeit, das Raumschiff nach links und rechts, sowie nach oben und unten zu steuern. Dadurch kann man auch Hindernisse, wie etwa Mauern, überfliegen. Das Spielprinzip wurde dabei vom quasi 2D-Vorgänger Scramble kopiert. Um sich davon ein genaueres Bild machen zu können, hier ein Vorschauvideo:

Zaxxon war, vermutlich gerade wegen des revolutionären Spielprinzips, äußerst erfolgreich. Daher folgte noch im gleichen Jahr Super Zaxxon, bei dem es am Ende einen Roboter zu besiegen galt -  es wurde ein Bossgegner hinzugefügt. Außerdem wurde es innerhalb von 2 Jahren, also bis 1984, auf sage und schreibe 13 Plattformen portiert: unter anderem auf den Commodore 64 und das Sega Master System. 1987 erschien der Nachfolger Zaxxon 3-D und ein Klon namens Panther. 8 Jahre später (1995) folgte dann der letzte Teil der Serie für den Sega 32X: Zaxxon Motherbase 2000.

Die belgische Polizei hat den Eifel-Panther offiziell zum Abschuss freigegeben. Rettet jetzt der deutsche Baby-Panther „El-Negro“ dem umherstreunenden Artgenossen das Leben?

Der tierische Rettungsplan: Pantherchen „El-Negro“ („Der Schwarze“, 19 Wochen alt) gehört den bekannten Filmtiertrainern Hermann Lock (46) und Walter Simbeck (61).

Lock: „Wir würden unseren kleinen El-Negro als Lebendfalle im Revier (belgische Eifel) des Panthers aussetzen.“ El-Negros Gebrüll und Geruch sollen den Panther anlocken. „Käme der Artgenosse tatsächlich angetanzt“, erklärt Lock, „würden wir ihn mit einem Betäubungsgewehr flachlegen.“
So wollen die Tierschützer aus dem hessischen Kelsterbach den Eifel-Panther, der seit Wochen zwischen der deutsch-belgischen Grenze hin und her flitzt, lebend einfangen!
Wie gefährlich ist aber das Unterfangen für Lockvogel El-Negro? Was, wenn der große Schwarze den kleinen Schwarzen als Rivalen ansieht und angreift? Lock: „Unser Baby-Panther würde durch einen Gitterkäfig geschützt sein. Und wir wären in Beißschutz-Kleidung in der Nähe, könnten sofort eingreifen, wenn`s brenzlig wird.“

Note to the writers of Cougar Town: Our state animal is actually the almost extinct Florida Panther.

But then again, upon further investigation, it seems that weak and vulnerable to land developers in the 1960s, The Florida Panther was actually saved from certain extinction by the bigger, stronger Cougar of the west. Hmmm… maybe you Hollywood guys are onto something.

Cougar. Panther. What’s the difference?

Cougars pursue. The Florida Panther is less interested in pursuit, is rarely seen hunting as it is more interested in survival.

The Cougar stereotype has been around since the late 80s, and is said to have actually originated in the dressing room of the Vancouver Canucks. The players called the older single women who came to their games “Cougars”, and the term took off from there.

As we interview Florida women dating younger men who would fall into the Cougar category, more than naught the women say the men were the pursuers, and that they actually had no interest in dating at the time, spending most of their time working and caring for their kids.

Panther Town

Like all things Florida, it seems even our state animal, the still endangered Florida Panther is not a total native. And we find that many of the ladies of Florida who are “of a certain age” mirror the state animal; wanting to date (prowl), but more likely to stay undercover due to the daily stress of competing and raising kids in the South, where in many pockets, it is still very much a man’s world.

The less predatory Florida Panthers exhibit surprise and embarrassment when asked about the age difference between themselves and their younger partners.

Interestingly enough, the men who have secured these ladies virtually crow as they retell their version of “the chase”. Can you say M.I.L.F.?

We’re not saying there aren’t any Cougars in Florida.

But when it comes to Courtney’s portrayal of all things Cougar, her boy toy pursuer and her weak attempts at reentering the dating scene in Cougar Town feel more Panther to us.

Maybe a little out-of-state hutzpah isn’t all bad?

Wenn es um den Schutz bedrohter Tiere geht, sind die deutschen Medien eine Art Speerspitze der Biodiversitätsbewegung. In aller Welt, nur nicht in Deutschland.

In Deutschland gelten natürlich andere Regeln, gerade wenn die Tiere rein theoretisch groß genug sind, einen unbeaufsichtigt im Wald spielenden Säugling zu verletzen; so hatten wir in den letzten paar Jahren einen bärischen Immigranten in Bayern, einige Wölfe vom Osten bis in den Norden und jetzt einen Panther bei Aachen.

Diese Tiere sind äußerst scheu und kämen normalerweise nicht im Traum auf die Idee, einen Menschen anzugreifen oder gar zu töten, dennoch läuft die Angstindustrie wie geschmiert und während Wölfe und Großkatzen überall in der Welt geschützt werden sollen, geht hier die Jagd gleich los; Bär Bruno konnte sich (angeblich anders als die Terroristen) wochenlang in Deutschland verstecken, unbemerkt – nicht gerade das, was man von einem riesigen, für Menschen gefährlichen Bären erwarten dürfte – in den Alpen außerhalb Deutschlands wird sich aber weiter für die Braunbären eingesetzt.

Die Angstindustrie läuft also, gleichzeitig gibt es aber hier ein Tier, unbemerkt von den Panikmachern, dass den Menschen tatsächlich angreifen und auch töten würde, allerdings nicht um ihn zu fressen, sondern um die eigene Brut zu sichern: Bei Lübeck lebt eine rasant wachsende Nandupopulation und im Gegensatz zu einem menschenscheuen Rudel Wölfe würde ein solcher Brutvogel einen Menschen, den er für eine Gefahr für sein Gelege hält, ohne zu zögern angreifen und in die Flucht schlagen oder töten.

Aaron Hall, "Lion Hunter of the Juniata" and founder of the legendary strain of Pennsylvania panther dogs.

I came across an account of an unusual breed of hunting dog that was developed in Centre County, Pennsylvania. This account comes from Extinct Animals of Pennsylvania by Henry Wharton Shoemaker. The text was originally  published in 1907, but the actual account comes from period between 1845 and 1869 in which a legendary cougar hunter named Aaron Hall was said to have killed fifty “panthers.”

Hall’s legendary status had left him with the sobriquet “Lion Hunter of the Juniata.” He had styled himself as the central Pennsylvania version of Davy Crockett.

And like any great hunter of those days, he had a pack of hunting dogs that helped him pursue his quarry.

Unlike any other hunter of that day, though, he had bred a rather unusual strain of cougar hound.

His massive dogs were run in pairs that then pursued the cougar until they could catch it by the ears– one dog on each ear, very similar to how hog catch dogs are used. It is also very similar to the way that the borzoi caught wolves.  The borzoi would grab the wolf by the sides of the neck, usually two dogs on either side.

The dogs were said to be the result of breeding old-type bulldogs, mastiffs, Newfoundlands, and bloodhounds together to produce a superior cougar hound. They dogs were said to have been so large that a former Pennsylvania game commissioner was able to ride one of them.

I have some issues with the veracity of these claims, but it is known that the mastiff-type dogs can be used to hunt large cats. Fila Brasileiros were used to hunt jaguars and South American cougars, and the Dogos Argentinos were also used to hunt cougars in their native country. Newfoundland dogs were very common in America at the time and were considered an appropriate dog to use for hunting various species of game, although waterfowling was their most common purpose. Bulldogs were probably chosen for their tenacity and ability to grip recalcitrant and powerful quarry, and bloodhounds have legendary noses. The mixture makes sense.

However, the story about the dogs grabbing the cats by the ears is a bit too far fetched for me to accept. A cougar is a very strong and agile animal. If cornered by dogs, it is going to fight very hard. Because its ears aren’t that large, my guess is that the dogs would have a very hard time holding the cats by the ears. They would simply be clawed to pieces, even if they did manage to get them by the ears.

Keep in mind that a cougar can kill a lone wolf, and it wouldn’t have very much trouble killing a domestic dog of any size. (There is a very good account of a cougar killing at captive wolf in Jim and Jamie Dutcher’s Wolves at Our Door.) Most modern cougar hounds tree the cats or hold them at bay. Very few of them engage in mortal combat with the cats. I seriously doubt that any dog would be able to fight a cougar until it was able to grab it by the ears.

Unless Hall or Sober were very small men, I seriously doubt that he could ride any dogs resulting from his crossbreeding. The biggest mastiffs have exceeded two hundred pounds, but if you’re crossing in smaller bulldogs, bloodhounds, and the slightly smaller Newfoundland of the day, it is very unlikely that anyone would be able to produce animals of that size.

Shoemaker wrote a lot about the folk culture of rural Pennsylvania, and theis story sounds a lot like mountain person’s tall tale. Mountain culture in Pennsylvania isn’t that different from mountain culture here, and I can tell you that telling stories like this one are almost de rigueur, especially when someone starts talking about his hunting dogs. Maybe Shoemaker was playing around with this lore, or maybe someone was playing a trick on him. After all, he was an outsider, a graduate of Columbia and a native New Yorker who had grown up in India. Such outsiders are very often told tall stories, for nothing can make a rural person with limited educational and economic opportunities feel better than when he or she gets some outsider to believe some outlandish story.

He does mention that many people of this region were keeping cougar dogs, but most of the dogs used to hunt cougars were “fices” or “whippets.”

One of the great ironies about cougars is that they were known for having a great deal of fear of dogs. Although they were capable of killing a dog easily, they normally would run if pursued by a pack of them.

Normally, these pursuits end with the cougar a tree and dogs barking at them. My guess is that if a cougar had found itself being chased by Hall’s cougar dogs, it would have run for the nearest tree before the dogs could even get close to it. This would have meant that it would have been next to impossible for the dogs to grab them by the ears. (Unless those horse-sized curs could also climb trees.)

I particularly like the story about the Pennsylvania panther dogs, but I am very skeptical that this story is real. Maybe Hall really did have big cougar hounds, but they didn’t hunt in exactly in the way described. Maybe they held the cats at a bay or pushed them into the trees. Some of them were probably much larger than the typical hunting dog of the region, and thus, they were given such an outlandish size.

Hall’s strain of panther dog went extinct shortly after his death in 1892. We can never really know for sure, but I think the chances of these dogs hunting in the way described are not very good.  I can’t imagine that a cougar would allow itself to be held by the ears in such a fashion.
