I saw this video on Blogistuta the other day, and in the spirit of what has apparently become we-miss-our-captains week, I couldn’t help but to post it. I read an article yesterday in which Laziale legend Paolo Di Canio decried the possibility of Er Pupone’s return to international football and gli Azzurri. Di Canio believes that neither Totti’s health nor his attitude (club over country, sempre) entitle him for a return to the national squad. Do I detect bitterness, Paolo? Perhaps it is because your abilities never earned you a call-up that you resent Totti being called up yet again to play for his country. Perhaps it is simply the difference in quality between le bandiere di Lazio e la bandiera di Roma. After all, Di Canio only ever scored 15 goals for Lazio; I believe Er Pupone is at 184 in the giallorosso shirt? Questa è la differenza – le legende di Lazio sono solo le legende di Lazio. La Bandiera di Roma anch’è la bandiera di Italia. È perché lui possa fare le pubblicità come questa:

Per la Lazio un inizio pirotecnico e vittoria in Supercoppa, poi un lento declino e il tunnel della crisi. Quali i motivi di questa debacle?

“La Supercoppa è una partita secca e non può essere considerata come metro di valutazione a livello prospettico. La Lazio in quella partita è stata molto fortunata, non ha mai superato la metà campo e l’Inter ha costruito numerosissime palle gol senza realizzarne. Nelle mie prime interviste, ad inizio stagione, avevo avvertito di non considerare quel match positiva sotto il profilo del gioco. Inoltre, il recupero di alcuni giocatori come ad esempio il mio amico Baronio, è subordinato all’assenza di Ledesma. Roberto è un giocatore valido ma non può garantire la continuità dell’argentino. Quanto alla difesa non esagero se parlo di giocatori logori, mentre l’attacco pur avendo elementi di qualità non è supportato da rifornimenti adeguati. Un giocatore come Brocchi, pur volenteroso, non può caricarsi tutte le responsabilità, anche atletiche, nel ricucire i reparti. Poi ci sono troppe mezzepunte…Diciamolo, si intuiva sin da subito che l’organico fosse incompleto”.

La politica al risparmio di Lotito quanto influirà a medio-lungo termine sulle sorti del club biancoceleste?

“Direi che quella di Lotito non possa considerarsi una vera e propria politica al risparmio. Consideriamo ad esempio tutti i soldi che il club spende per cause che sistematicamente perde, come nei casi di Mutarelli e Stendardo. Quando si parla di gestione economica di un club, spesso si tralasciano quelle che sono le spese per avvocati e consulenti che rappresentano gravi perdite soprattutto quando non si riesce mai a spuntarla. Modelli di gestione oculata potrebbero essere considerati senza dubbio quelli di Udinese e Fiorentina che a differenza della Lazio possono vantare reti di osservatori molto competenti. Esempio lampante è Melo, scoperto da Corvino, pagato 7 milioni e venduto a 23 dopo aver dato un apporto fondamentale per il raggiungimento dell’obiettivo stagionale del club. Zarate, invece, giocatore dalle indubbie qualità è stato acquistato ad un cifra eccesiva che di solito si spende per un giocatore già affermato. Ad oggi non credo che ci sia un club disposto a corrispondere alla Lazio la stessa cifra d’acquisto. In più i dati parlano della Lazio come settimo club italiano per monte ingaggi a dispetto di una classifica deludente. Non mi sembra il caso di parlare di politica al risparmio. Per non parlare dei tanti giocatori in organico che non vengono mai utilizzati”.

Lei si riferisce ai “dissidenti” Pandev e Ledesma..

“Indubbiamente il mancato utilizzo di questi ed altri giocatori come Rocchi comporta notevoli difficoltà a livello tattico e carismatico. Parlo però anche di molti giovani come Eliseu, mai presi in considerazione ed ai quali si corrisponde un ingaggio. La Lazio ad oggi ha circa 40 giocatori e ne utilizza solo 16. Valutando la rosa biancoceleste non si può prescindere da giocatori come Pandev e Ledesma che nel corso di questi ultimi anni sono stati protagonisti indiscussi degli ottimi risultati ottenuti dal club. Tirando le somme direi che la Lazio abbia una dirigenza poco competente e per niente attenta e lungimirante. Se i tifosi, dopo l’euforia iniziale, contestano ne hanno tutti i motivi perchè il loro “compito” è gioire per i successi della squadra non scendere in meriti puramente tecnici. La colpa è dei cosiddetti “comunicatori” della società che ad inizio anno hanno commesso gravissimi errori di valutazione”.

Lotito per molti rappresenta comunque la salvezza del club…

“Bisogna dire tutte le verità. C’era una volontà politica di salvare la Lazio e tante altre squadre importanti in difficoltà. La Lazio con qualsiasi altro imprenditore sarebbe stata aiutata ad uscire dalla crisi. Attualmente Lotito detiene circa il 70% delle quote societarie e più che di presidente parlerei di un dirigente che gestisce il club”.

Napoli ultima spiaggia per Ballardini. Reja in preallarme per l’eventuale successione.

“E’ una notizia mezza detta e mezza smentita. In questo momento per qualsiasi allenatore sarebbe difficile raccogliere il testimone tattico della Lazio. Per quanto riguarda Ballardini preferisco non esprimermi sulle sue capacità. Critico, però, la sua incoerenza perchè ora, diversamente da quanto affermava ad inizio anno, va dicendo che questo organico è incompleto. Ricordo ancora le sue dichiarazioni nelle quali ribadiva l’assoluta qualità del gruppo e di sentirsi fortunato di allenare una squadra così completa giustificando l’esclusione dei “dissidenti” come scelta tecnica, mentre era evidente che si trattasse di scelta obbligata su direttive societarie”.

Quagliarella in astinenza da gol e non convocato in nazionale. Paga le eccessive pressioni della piazza?

“ soffre le transizioni d’attacco di una Devo dire che Fabio mi ricorda per caratteristiche Tommaso Rocchi. Al di là delle considerazioni sugli aspetti psicologici, visto che il suo sogno era vestire la maglia azzurra e che la tifoseria si aspetta molto da lui, direi che a differenza di Udine, dove era il terminale offensivo partecipando attivamente alla manovra, nel Napolisquadra in cui ravviso troppi portatori di palla e poco dialogo”.

Mazzarri-Donadoni, cos’è cambiato a livello tattico?

“Prima di ogni cosa è cambiato l’aspetto caratteriale della squadra. Napoli è una piazza che ha bisogno di un tecnico che, oltre le capacità tattiche, sia d’impatto visivo. Mazzarri è un sanguigno e riesce a comunicare anche con i movimenti del corpo la sua foga e la sua passione. Donadoni è un ottimo allenatore ma ha pagato, in un momento in cui i risultati scarseggiavano, un atteggiamento tendenzialmente remissivo soprattutto durante la gara: incitava poco il gruppo e si relazionava con eccessivo applomb con l’arbitro. Magari in altre piazze funziona, a Napoli no. A livello tattico è prematuro valutare l’operato di Mazzarri anche se i risultati gli danno ragione”.

Amarcord napoletano. Gol indimenticabili al Milan, alla Roma e al Foggia, i tuoi ricordi…

“Gol importanti e indimenticabili. Certo, il gol al Milan lo ricordo molto volentieri sia perchè portai a spasso l’intera difesa rossonera guidata da Franco Baresi sia per l’incredibile ruggito del San Paolo, ma il gol decisivo fu quello segnato al Foggia all’ultima giornata che ci diede il pass per l’europa”.

A Napoli di passaggio, eppure i tifosi reclamorono il tuo acquisto. Memorabile lo striscione “Ferlaino regalaci Di Canio”..

“Tutti sanno che a Napoli sarei rimasto molto volentieri. Ruppi con la Juve per firmare un contratto di quattro anni con il Napoli. Gallo non volle per problemi economici. La mia carriera ha preso comunque una strada meravigliosa e l’esperienza inglese mi ha fortificato regalandomi grandi soddisfazioni”.

A proposito di calcio inglese, “Magic Box” Zola è in difficoltà con il tuo West Ham…

“E’ un problema di organico, fortemente rimaneggiato per problemi economici. Su tutte, le cessioni di Bellamy e Collins, non sono state adeguatamente compensate da acquisti di spessore. Spero comunque che si riprendano al più presto. Sono ancora legatissimo al calcio inglese che reputo il migliore in assoluto sotto ogni punto di vista. Spero in futuro di poter lavorare lì in qualità di allenatore. “.

Di Canio, quindi, futuro mister?

“Lunedi inizio un master a cui parteciperanno, tra gli altri, Leonardo e Atzori. Sarà bello confrontarsi con loro ed iniziare con entusiasmo questa nuova avventura”.

Lavezzi-Di Canio, l’imprevedibilità del numero 7..

“Il calcio è cambiato e sinceramente non vedo in giro giocatori che ricordano Di Canio. Se proprio vogliamo fare un parellelo direi che siamo due giocatori totalmente diversi. Io sono nato ala destra, ma nel corso della mia carriera ho sviluppato capacità di adattamento, per attitudini tecniche, che mi hanno consentito di ricoprire più ruoli come rifinitore e seconda punta. Lavezzi, invece, dà molta profondità alla squadra, ma come Zarate ha il limite di giocare poco con i compagni e troppo per sè stesso. Palla al piede, in velocità, è devastante ma deve migliorare sotto il profilo tecnico, realizzativo e corale. Soprattutto quest’ultimo aspetto, se non limato, gli impedirà di essere preso in considerazione da grandi club”.

Napoli-Lazio, il pronostico di un illustre doppio ex

“Napoli superfavorito se ritrova lo smalto delle gare disputate contro Milan, Juve e Fiorentina. Tiferò per il bel calcio e che vinca il migliore. Tutti sanno che tifo per la Lazio, chiaramente, e chiudere la carriera in biancoceleste è stata la realizzazione di un sogno. La maglia laziale è la mia seconda pelle, ma è chiaro che la squadra le vittorie debba meritarle”.

Favorevole al ritorno di Totti in nazionale?

“Mi sembra assolutamente fuori luogo. Stiamo parlando di un giocatore soggetto a problemi fisici che lo costringono a giocare soltanto due, tre mesi all’anno. Per quanto mi riguarda il problema non si dovrebbe nemmeno porre e sarebbe ridicolo rivederlo tra i convocati. Al di là di ogni discorso ci sono giocatori che si sono sacrificati per ottenere la qualficazione al mondiale, mentre lui ha deciso di dedicarsi esclusivamente alla Roma”.

Lippi-Cassano, il Di Canio pensiero.

“Conoscendo Lippi che ho avuto proprio nell’anno al Napoli posso confermare che per lui il gruppo viene prima di ogni cosa; basti ricordare che per alcuni mesi mise fuori squadra senatori come Policano e Nela, lanciando nella mischia giovani promettenti ed equilibrati caratterialmente come Pecchia e Cannavaro. Lippi con me fu straordinario: mi disse “fai quello che vuoi”. E’ evidente comunque che Antonio Cassano lo porterei sempre in nazionale, per un discorso di imprevedibilità e per il suo indiscutibile talento”.

Dito medio alla curva, saluto romano e spinta all’arbitro, cosa non rifaresti?

“Sono gesti istintivi dettati dal momento emozionale. Ciò che posso garantire è che non c’è stata mai violenza nelle mie intenzioni. In particolare il saluto romano rappresenta per me un gesto di libertà di espressione e di condivisione di un pensiero con una parte della tribuna. Come più volte ribadito, rispetto le idee di tutti, ma se si vuole lasciar fuori la politica dagli stadi allora questa deve essere una che vale per tutti“.

De seneste uger her på bloggen har stået i Premier League-gennemgangens tegn. Det har været ganske muntert, og det har været interessant for eders ydmyge skribent at fordybe sig lidt i de såvel de store stjernefunklende, som i de mere støvede dele af ligaen.

Nu skal vi imidlertidig have svesken på disken, som man vist siger i de mere kulørte dele af  underholdningsindustrien; ja – vi skal naturligvis igen tale om West Ham United Football Club anno 1895.

Et løjerligt vindue

Siden sidst er der sket mangt og meget på the Boleyn Ground, og man ved snart ikke hvor man skal begynde. Transfervinduet er smækket, og som så ofte før står man tilbage med en lidt flad fornemmelse. Det er selvfølgelig aldeles fremragende at manden som brækkede kæben i sæsonpremieren og ønskede at spille videre, Herita “Klunker så tunge som IC3-tog” Ilunga, er blevet tilknyttet på en fast kontrakt. Ligeledes virker det spændende at låne Luis Jimenez i Inter, ligesom indkøbet af talenterne Daprela og Kurucz er fint i tråd med klubbens visioner.

At stortalentet Savio som blev hentet i januar med store ord, fanfarer og megahype allerede er sendt retur til Italien er mindre fremragende. Ikke mindst fordi man sidder med et indtryk af at tysk-uganderen meget vel kan finde på at gå hen at blive en modbydeligt god spiller for Fiorentina, og så står man jo der og ligner en idiot til den tid. Til gengæld fik vi Manuel Da Costa i bytte. Han skulle eftersigende have været et meget stort forsvarstalent engang. Om det så er godt eller skidt må vi lade komme an på en prøve. Forhåbentlig kan Zola sparke liv i hans karriere igen. Radoslav ‘Ladies man’ Kocav er også blevet tilknyttet på en permanent kontrakt, hvilket virker en lille smule underligt, idet førsteprioriteten i dette vindue burde være at styrke angrebet betragteligt – hvilket den vel også ganske eksplicit var. I stedet hentede man altså en – indrømmet – udemærket, men temmelig gammel, tjekkisk, defensiv midtbanespiller. West Hams ledelse holder aldrig op med at forbløffe. I de mindste hylder de kvindelig fans beslutningen…

Angrebet blev til gengæld ikke overrendt af nyindkøb. Trods massive rygter om en mængde interessante spilleres snarlige ankomst – blandt andet Luca Toni, Eidur Gudjonson, Marouane Chamakh, Benjani osv – er Carlton Cole er stadig den eneste rigtige striker i truppen. Nu går der rygter om at den 33-årige mexicanske angriber Gulliermo Franco skulle være så godt som tilknyttet på en fri transfer. En investering ala sidste sæsons temmelig kiksede paniksigning af Diego Tristan. Tristan endte dog med i sidste ende at redde en række point til klubben. Hvis Franco kan gøre det samme er alle nogenlunde tilfredse, omend jeg ikke personligt holder vejret i spænding…

Sikkert er det til gengæld at  klubben hentede Alessandro Diamanti i Livorno. Han lavede 18 kasser for italierne og hjalp dem til oprykning i sidste sæson. Han lader ligeledes til at være en teknisk rigtig god spiller, omend mere en hængende angriber end en egentlig target man. Til gengæld lader han også til at have en personlighed der giver mindelser om vores sidste kugleskøre italiener, Paolo Di Canio (Di Michele var ikke engang rigtig skør – han var bare dårlig). Hvis Diamanti kan give halvt så mange gode øjeblikke som Di Canio er han garanteret kultstatus. Hvis han så samtidig kan nøjes med at give halvt så mange dårlige, så nærmer han sig allerede legendestatus. I sin debut i weekenden kom han ind fra bænken, og havde blandt andet et frækt og veludført skudforsøg fra en meget spids vinkel langt fra mål, som ramte stolpen. Næste gang bliver det forhåbentlig en kasse, og så er Diamanti igang. Eller også bliver han den nye Marco Boogers (som i midt90′erne blev købt ret dyrt i hollandsk fodbold som den store angrebsstjerne. Han blev udvist i sin anden indskiftning for klubben kort efter han var kommet på banen på Old Trafford  og tog dernæst hjem til en tiltrængt omgang psykologhjælp i Holland). Det er det fascinerende, spændende og dybt, dybt forbandede ved denne type indkøb; man har ingen anelse, om man har købt Flemming Poulsen eller Flemming Krøl. Interessant bliver det i hvert fald…På transferdeadlinedag solgte klubben så den populære og kompetente centerforsvarer James Collins til Aston Villa for £ 5 millioner. Penge som logisk set skulle have været øremærket købet af den angriber som aldrig kom…

En fuld islænding i en slikbutik…

Klubbens manglende evne til at hente det vigtige supplement til angrebsstyrken blev delvist forklaret allerede da Diamanti blev købt. Finansiering af italieneren var sket gennem en række fremskudte udbetalinger af sponsorpenge, og denne lidt aparte praksis blev yderligere logisk, da klubben langt om længe offentliggjorde sit regnskab for sidste kalenderår; £ 37 millioner løde underskuddet på, og så tror da pokker at der ikke er råd til spillere.

Det astronomiske underskud bliver endnu mere tragisk af at spillere som Anton Ferdinand, George Mccartney, Matthew Etherington, John Pantsil, Bobby Zamora, Craig Bellamy og senest Savio og Collins er blevet solgt umiddelbart uden at særlig mange af pengene fra disse handler er blevet investeret i spillertruppen. Ligeledes er Freddie Ljunberg blevet købt ud af sin kontrakt, ligesom holdets anfører Lucas Neill samt op mod ti andre spillere forlod klubben på fri transfer i sommers. Størstedelen af disse penge lader til at være forsvundet i gældens dybe hul, som John Mogensen vist sang om engang inden verden gik af lave. Jeg føler mig i øvrigt overbevist om at Mogensen må have været hammer, men det skal vi ikke snakke om nu…

Hvis man skal forsøge at se hele miseren fra en positiv vinkel, så fortalte CEO Scott Duxbury allerede under sin charmeoffensiv tidligere på sommeren at regnskaberne ville være en katastrofe. De islandske ejeres voldsomme investeringer i klubben for lånte penge og efterfølgende konkurs har haft West Ham på kanten af administration det seneste års tid, og at holdet har overlevet denne trussel, og oven i købet spillet fin fodbold og holdt fast på en stamme af kvalitetsspillere er posititvt. Oven i købet hævdede Duxbury, at økonomien nu er under kontrol, og at klubben løber rundt økonomisk.  Men nu er der snart heller ikke flere spillere at sælge af, og truppen ser tynd ud på flere pladser. Januartransfervinduet imødses med spænding herfra. Til den tid er Matthew Upsons kontrakt halvandet år lang, og der er intet der tyder på at West Ham i sin nuværende økonomiske situation kan lokke landsholdsspilleren til at forlænge. Man frygter i sit stille sind at Da Costa er hentet ind som supplement til Tomkins og Gabbidon, og at centerforsvarsmulighedern til februar udgøres af disse spillere. Og at klubben med andre ord vil vedblive at sælge sine bedste spillere og forsøge at erstatte dem med mere eller mindre obskure udenlandske lejesvende og egne talenter som siden sælges når de endelig bliver stabile og gode.

Ikke også du, Calum…

En anden spiller som klubben helt sikkert har forsøgt at sælge er centerforsvareren Calum Davenport. Han blev signet da de lånte, islandske penge sad løst, og er siden faldet i unåde hos Zola. Altså ville det frigøre en pæn pose penge at komme af med Davenport, som egentlig har spillet udemærket når han har fået chancen. Når han er i form er undertegnede overbevist om, at han ville kunne styrke de fleste hold i den nederste halvdel af tabellen. Sådan skulle det imidlertid ikke blive. Davenport formåede nemlig at blive hovedperson i et af de seneste kapitler i den endeløse sæbeopera af absurde hændelser som har præget West Ham de seneste 4-5 år. Tidligt om morgen d. 22 august blev han således knivstukket i begge ben foran sit hjem, i en episode hvor også hans mor blev stukket ned. Davenport var stærkt medtaget, mistede halvdelen af sit blod, og i starten snakkede man seriøst om at han måske ville miste sine ben. Selvom han siden har kommet sig meget, vides det endnu ikke om han nogensinde kommer til at spille fodbold igen. Gerningsmanden var ingen ringere end Calums søsters kæreste, som åbenbart har seriøse problemer med sit temperament. Søsteren skulle i øvrigt have holdt åbenlyst med kæresten til de første retsmøder i sagen. Fine familieforhold må man sige…

I sine boldgade har der desuden gået rygter om at Dean Ashtons fodboldkarriere skulle lakke mod enden. Blot 26-årige Ashton er gået fra skade til skade de senere år. Dog har han indimellem nået at spille nok sammenhængende kampe til også at få nye forbedrede langtidskontrakter, og følgelig blive en tung post på lønbudgettet. Nu spekuleres der altså i at karrieren helt er slut for West Hams nummer 9, som i sommers ellers var tæt på et skifte til Stoke. Til gengæld er Nigel Quashie stærkt tilbage på reserveholdet, hvor han også hæver islændinge-løn uden nogensinde at nærme sig startopstillingen. Forhåbentlig et championshiphold på et tidspunkt kan gøre en ende på hans lidelser.

Sæsonstart fra bunden af tønden…

Kedeligt er det aldrig i West Ham. Det skulle da lige være på banen, hvor de seneste tre ligakampe har budt på massive skuffelser. Først et nederlag til Sp*rs, som ellers var godt og grundigt på hælene efter Carlton Cole havde lavet et vanvittigt godt mål lige efter pausen. Umiddelbart efter valgte selvsamme Cole imidlertid at lave en af de dårligste afleveringer jeg nogensinde har set, og fuldstændig upresset omkring midtbanen, spille Jermain Defoe fuldstændig fri i West Hams straffesparksfelt. 1-1. Sp*rs overtog momentum og vandt 2-1 på et mål, hvor Jonathan Spector med al ønskelig tydelighed viste at der mangler backup på venstrebacken når Ilunga ikke er med.

Siden fulgte en røvsyg 0-0 mod Blackburn som ellers havde fået en rædsom sæsonstart, og i sidste weekend et skuffende 1-0 nederlag til Wigan i en kamp hvor West Ham havde chancerne til at få mindst et point. Skuffende. Ikke mindst at spillet har haltet seriøst efter en alt i alt god indsats mod Sp*rs.
Og så snakker vi slet ikke om carling cup kampen mod Millwall, som endte i tilskueruroligheder og pitch invasions som fik den rødmossede del af den engelske presse helt op i det Thatcherske felt af raseri over fodboldbøllernes adfærd. Helten som desværre helt blev glemt i den sammenhæng var unge Jack Collison, som hørte på smædesange om sin netop afdøde far i 120 minutter fra udebanefansene blot to døgn efter faderens død i en motorcykel, inden han grædende og til udbredt hyldest fra sine egne fans forlod banen med Steve Clarkes alfaderlige arm om skulderen efter kampen var vundet i forlænget spilletid. Simpelthen stærkt.

Af andre positive historier kan det nævnes at de sidste års store flop, Julien Faubert er blevet en habil højreback, som blev kåret til månedens spiller i august i klubben. Ligeledes er det positivt at Green har bemægtiget sig målet på landsholdet (i hvert fald i James’ fravær), og at såvel Upson og Cole lader til at være faste dele af Capellos trup.
På lørdag venter  en hjemmekamp mod Liverpool. Et hold vi st0rt set aldrig slår, og som allerede har kniven på struben i kampen om point i toppen. Med et nederlag der begynder vi allerede at nærme os nedrykningsform og generel depression. Efteråret kommer måske tidligt i år, men skide værd med det og come on you irons!

Since that fateful day Paolo di Canio decided to take exception and show referee Paul Alcock his opinions on the quality of officiating in the modern game, referee’s respect has been slowly falling by the wayside, and diving face first into the ditch.

Tirades on official’s decisions after the matches – most notably from the managers on the receiving end of certain judgements – have become commonplace, and the FA have finally decided to step in and call for a halt.

Joe Kinnear has become the 18^th manager this season to be punished for comments made in regards to the ref after a match – and that number alone illuminates the fact that referee respect in the dugouts is about as easy to find as a fart in a Jacuzzi.

Referees can rightly expect professional courtesy – but respect is something entirely different.  Aretha Franklin summed it up perfectly – “Ain’t gonna do you wrong, all I’m asking for is a little respect”.

But if referees want that respect, they need to stop doing wrong by the players they are meant to control for only 90 minutes per week.  If anyone else made as many errors in judgement as some refs have shown in the past few years, they would be disrespected, disgraced and most likely dismissed.

It must be said, however, that the distinct lack of technology in aiding the ref doesn’t really help their cause either.  Football refs don’t get the video replays, nor time to judge an incident before sentencing.  They are expected to see an incident in black and white, and rule on it there and then.

The lonliest men on football fields across the country on a Saturday afternoon have only had the luxury of a vibrating arm band to alert them to their assistant’s decisions for some two years – and if that is the rate of which ref’s technology is advancing, I’m sorry to say the rest of us may have to be prepared for a long while more of referees struggling to get their decisions right.

Consider this though.  The latest technology for the rest of us – what with being able to Pause and Rewind Live TV, and all of the replay technology found in TV studios across the globe – has made it much, much easier for us to detect refereeing errors.  But that doesn’t help the guy in the middle at 3 o’clock on a Saturday afternoon with nothing but his own eye sight (which is often rather comically brought into question most days as well) to rely on.

For years now, referees have been left behind in a world that is forever becoming more technological and fast-paced.  It has become far too easy for the Sir Alex Fergusons and Arsene Wengers of this world to criticise the officials when it must be said – they don’t get it right all the time either.

I would imagine though, that when Alex Ferguson picked up that hair dryer in the changing room and decided to see if it would bounce off the wall, he never imagined it would make as many headlines as it did – but it was David Beckham’s own fault for getting in the way of Ferguson’s experiment, surely?

Too easy has it become for the rest of us to criticise the referees for some atrocious decisions, but they do need to keep one eye on the ball, and the other eye on the other 22 entities on the field at the time, which could never be an easy job.

So surely it is time for us to step back and give the refs a little time, a little technology and, most importantly of all, that respect which they have longed for so much?

Unless they are given some gadgets to make their jobs easier, it could be argued that within a year or two there will no longer be any real incentive to wear the black jersey any longer, and football itself will be in meltdown – a chaotic chasm with no-one to control it.

So let’s give the guys a break, accept that they are the ones with the authority in any match and that yeah, sure, they will get it wrong some times, but don’t we all?

Parliamo un po’ di calcio. Ma non di quello giocato, di quello chiacchierato. Chiacchierato soprattutto da Repubblica che come al solito deduce e insinua a proprio uso e consumo. Così, giusto per infamare questo o quel giocatore a seconda del giornalista-tifoso che in quel momento scrive l’articolo.

Il primo caso riguarda Franco Brienza (invito a leggere anche il post di Massimo Calabrò). Il fantasista della Reggina domenica scorsa a Palermo è stato protagonista di un bel gesto di fair-play. Il giocatore, infatti, si trovava solo davanti al portiere quando si è accorto di uno scontro a centrocampo e ha fermato il gioco. Gesto criticato dai tifosi amaranto, soprattutto per il fatto che la squadra dello Stretto si trova penultima in classifica con un solo punto.
Occasione troppo ghiotta per Repubblica che non perde occasione per screditare Reggio Calabria e la sua gente. Secondo il quotidiano, infatti, il giocatore non potrebbe uscire di casa. «Non posso più girare per le strade di Reggio», questa la dichiarazione riportata da Repubblica. Che i tifosi della Reggina non abbiano apprezzato il gesto di Brienza è notorio, ma dire che sono pronti ad aggredire il proprio calciatore, mi sembra proprio esagerato. Ma d’altronde Repubblica non è nuova a questi episodi di demonizzazione.

Il secondo caso riguarda il portiere del Milan Christian Abbiati. In una lunga intervista rilasciata a Sportweek, il numero uno rossonero ha confessato di condividere i valori del fascismo:

«Io non ho vergogna a manifestare la mia fede politica. Del fascismo - ha detto Abbiati - condivido ideali come la Patria e i valori della religione cattolica. Rifiuto le leggi razziali, l’alleanza con Hitler e l’ingresso in guerra, ma mi piace la capacità che aveva di assicurare l’ordine, garantendo la sicurezza dei cittadini»

In precedenza il caso più eclatante è stato quello dell’ex capitano della Lazio Paolo Di Canio, che dichiarò di essere «fascista, ma non razzista» e sotto la curva festeggiava col saluto romano. O del portierone della Juventus e della Nazionale, Gigi Buffon, che disegnò di suo pugno una canottiera con su scritto «Boia chi molla».

Repubblica che fa? Con un articolo di Corrado Zunino s’indigna per «quel fascino per la camicia nera che cresce nel mondo del calcio» (titolo del pezzo). “Zunino il partigiano” prima definisce quello di Abbiati «revisionismo pret a’ porter» e poi si scaglia contro Buffon, Cannavaro, De Rossi, Aquilani, Tacconi e Sereni, tutti rei di essere simpatizzanti fascisti.

Ma la cosa più bella di “Zunino bella ciao” è l’indignazione:

«Il problema – scrive – è che i calciatori navigano dentro un mare di ipocrisia che consente di tenere “Faccetta nera” nella suoneria del cellulare senza provare sensi di colpa»

Peccato, però, che l’acuto giornalista di Repubblica non menzioni giocatori dichiaratamente di sinistra come Miccoli, Lucarelli e Zampagna, solo per citarne alcuni. Col primo che porta Che Guevara tatuato sulla gamba e gli altri due che escono dal campo salutando i tifosi col pugno chiuso. “Zunino il moralista” s’indigna, poi, che certi calciatori come suoneria per il cellulare hanno “Faccetta nera”, ma non ricorda quando la curva rossa del Livorno ha fischiato durante il minuto di silenzio per il militare morto in Afghanistan.

E allora cara Repubblica e stimatissimo Zunino, la vita è fatta di cose reali e cose supposte. Se le cose reali le mettiamo da una parte, le supposte dove le mettiamo? (do.mal.)

Essenciais em qualquer cozinha caipira, o fogão e o forno a lenha têm espaço em restaurantes de diferentes especialidades. Além de charmoso, o fogão a lenha permite que molhos e cozidos fiquem apurando por mais tempo, sem queimar, o que, segundo os apreciadores, confere mais sabor às receitas. Nas versões mais modernas, as chapas podem atingir 400 graus de temperatura em apenas vinte minutos. Já o forno a lenha não é exclusividade de pizzarias. Muitas casas adotam o equipamento para o preparo de carnes, sanduíches, pães e até sobremesas. “Dá trabalho ter um desses”, diz Roberto Deyrmendjian, proprietário do armênio Casa Garabed. “É preciso ter espaço e manter a higiene no estoque da lenha. O calor deve ser controlado construindo o forno de maneira correta. Mas tudo isso vale porque no final as receitas ficam com um sabor muito mais especial”, defende. Do forno de seu restaurante em Santana saem 5 000 esfihas por mês. Além do preparo de pães e pizzas e para gratinar massas, o equipamento é indicado para carnes como cabrito, pernil e costela. Em fogo alto– que podem atingir até 600 graus – elas assam rapidamente, conservam o sumo e ficam mais macias. Selecionamos alguns endereços onde é possível provar receitas preparadas nas altas temperaturas e no forno lento. Confira o roteiro.

1. Adega Santiago

É uma mistura de bar e restaurante. No cardápio, petiscos e refeições inspirados nas culinárias portuguesa e espanhola. O forno a lenha de 1,60 por 1,80 metro fica na cozinha e dele saem tapas – como são chamadas as pequenas porções espanholas – pães, peixes, aves e carnes. Os pratos feitos ali, como o arroz de pato, são sinalizados no menu. Outra opção é a bacalhoada na lenha, que serve duas pessoas. “A temperatura [450 graus] é maior do que os fornos convencionais e a lenha dá um sabor especial ao prato, um gostinho defumado”, diz Luis Felipe Moraes, proprietário da Adega.

2. Bolinha

Foi em 1946 que o taxista Affonso Paulillo trocou de profissão e resolveu abrir um restaurante com cara de boteco. Naquela época o Jardim Paulista era pouco habitado e a casa servia pratos variados e pizzas. Mais de sessenta anos depois, a feijoada do Bolinha é a mais famosa da cidade. Preparada no fogão a lenha – que está na cozinha desde a inauguração –, é servida nas versões tradicional (com tudo que tem direito) ou magra.

3. Casa Garabed

Desde 1951, a casa armênia ocupa um imóvel em uma ladeira residencial no bairro de Santana. Ali são preparadas receitas bem parecidas com as da culinária árabe. São esfihas, pães, kebabs e quibes. O forno a lenha ocupa uma área de 25 metros quadrados e é a grande atração. Tudo é assado na hora. As esfihas são colocadas diretamente na pedra do forno, levam menos de dois minutos para ficar prontas e chegam à mesa estalando de quente. Dali saem 5 000 unidades por mês, fechadas e abertas. Uma delas tem recheio de bastrmá (tipo de carne seca armênia). O diki-kebab também é assado na lenha. Trata-se de um espetinho de filé mignon intercalado com tomate, cebola e pimentão. A berinjela para o babaganuche também é cozida na brasa e há um tipo de quibe que, antes de ser cozido na coalhada, é assado no forno.

4. A Figueira Rubaiyat

Uma figueira de 130 anos, 50 metros de altura e oito metros de diâmetro enfeita o salão. Na cozinha envidraçada, a proposta é o resgate da culinária primitiva, por isso, grande parte do cardápio é preparado em um dos quatro fornos à lenha, feitos de barro e em formato de iglu, e em panelas de ferro. A temperatura chega a atingir 600 graus. Saem dali carnes, aves e frutos do mar. O carro-chefe da casa é o caixote de crustáceos que traz lagostim, camarão, pitu, vieira e cavaquinha. Todos cozidos com arroz italiano. Na lista das aves está o frango caipira com guarnição de espinafre, presunto tipo parma e cenoura.

5. Forneria San Paolo

O nome forneria nada tem a ver com gastronomia, significa, em italiano, fábrica de fornos. Mas combina bem com a casa do empresário João Paulo Diniz que, desde setembro de 2001, serve pratos e sanduíches preparados em dois fornos a lenha na cozinha envidraçada. O cardápio é praticamente todo composto de sanduíches em pão de miga importado, pão ciabatta ou massa de pizza, como se fosse um calzone. O campeão de vendas é o cheeseburguer forneria, com hambúrguer de carnes especiais pré-grelhado e queijo cheddar. É levado ao forno para terminar de assar a carne, derreter o queijo e assar o pão. É também da fornalha que saem as bananas assadas com casca e que, depois de douradas, ganham uma bola de sorvete de canela.

6. La Risotteria Alessandro Segato

O chef italiano Alessandro Segato trocou o país de origem pelo Brasil na década de 90. Fundou o La Risotteria em 2000. Lá ele prepara não só risotos, mas também receitas do norte e do centro da Itália. O forno a lenha é visto do salão e dele saem pratos como o peixe do dia assado com manteiga de confit de limão siciliano e estragão e a focaccia de berinjela, tomates cerejas e queijo tipo parmegiano regiano.

7. Matterello

A decoração da casa com colunas retorcidas e cacos de cerâmicas reverenciam o arquiteto espanhol Antonio Gaudí. No entanto não espere encontrar ali paellas e tapas. O cardápio da casa é italianíssimo e oferece, há 15 anos, pratos preparados no fogão a lenha. Destaque para o bocconcini di Parma – panquecas enroladas com recheio de ricota e parmesão, com molho de champignon, funghi e filetinhos de contra-filé. Curiosidade: na hora de escolher, o cliente encontra não só o nome do prato e o preço, mas a receita completa de cada item do menu.

8. Sinhá

Um exemplar da cozinha caipira, o Sinhá encanta com sua decoração rústica que remete às fazendas. Os pratos são triviais e feitos com capricho e boa escolha de ingredientes. O fogão a lenha ajuda a compor o cenário. Exposto no salão, todo em tijolinho aparente, funciona com um réchaud que mantém os pratos aquecidos. Eles são preparados no fogão convencional – exceto a feijoada que, servida às quartas e sábados, é preparada no calor da lenha e fica apurando para ganhar mais sabor.

Italiens Fußballstars als Spiegel der Gesellschaft

Paolo Di Canio, Kapitän des traditionsreichen italienischen Fußballklubs Lazio Roma, ist im Herbst letzten Jahres europaweit in die Schlagzeilen geraten, nachdem er wiederholt vor seinen Fans mit dem “römischen Gruß” - bei uns besser bekannt als Hitler-Gruß – posiert hatte. Weniger bekannt ist, dass es in Italien auch politisch ganz anders denkende Spieler gibt. Einer davon ist Cristiano Lucarelli, Torschützenkönig in Italiens oberster Spielklasse in der Saison 2004/05 und überzeugter Kommunist.

Lazio Rom ist für Italiens FaschistInnen ein traditioneller Verein, Di Canios Pose also keineswegs ein Ausrutscher. Die 1900 entstandene Società Sportiva Lazio hatte von Anfang an eine bürgerlich-konservative, später dann eindeutig faschistische Gefolgschaft. FaschistInnenführer Benito Mussolini schrieb sich bei Lazio als Mitglied ein, seine Parteibonzen und seine Söhne taten es ihm nach. Lazios größter Fanklub, die Irriducibili (zu Deutsch: die Unbeugsamen, Erbitterten, Grimmigen) hat 7000 Mitglieder und ein klar rechtsextremes Profil. Vor einigen Jahren zogen die Irriducibili in einem Stadtderby gegen AS Roma ein Transparent mit der Aufschrift “Auschwitz ist eure Heimat, die Öfen sind eure Häuser” hoch. Damals standen die Fanklubs von AS Roma noch links, doch mittlerweile ist auch dort “die Kurve” rechtsextrem dominiert.

“Anständiger Typ”

Paolo Di Canio war früher selbst ein Irriducibile. Di Canio ist 37, er ist im vorigen Sommer nach vielen Jahren in England zurückgekehrt, um die Karriere bei seinem alten Klub ausklingen zu lassen. Als er im Jänner 2005 beim Derby gegen den AS Roma ein Tor schoss, zog er sich anschließend das Trikot über den Kopf, damit alle das T-Shirt darunter sehen konnten, auf dem stand: “Es gibt nur zwei Möglichkeiten, das Schlachtfeld zu verlassen. Entweder mit dem Kopf des Feindes oder ohne den eigenen.” Als er seine jubelnden Fans erreicht hatte, riss Di Canio den rechten Arm hoch. In Österreich heißt das Hitler-Gruß. Für Lazios Präsidenten Claudio Lotito ist das alles kein Problem: “Das war kein Hitlergruß”. Am selben Nachmittag hob Di Canio noch einmal den rechten Arm, bei einer Pressekonferenz. “Der Gruß kommt aus dem alten Rom. Und auf das alte Rom bin ich stolz.”

Auf dem rechten Arm trägt Di Canio die Tätowierung “Dux”. Das ist lateinisch für Führer, italienisch wurde Duce daraus. In seinen Memoiren schreibt Di Canio, er hätte ein dutzend Biographien des FaschistInnen-Führers Mussolini zu Hause: “Ich denke, dass er eine zutiefst unverstandene Persönlichkeit war. Ich bin fasziniert von Mussolini.” Alessandra Mussolini, Enkelin des Duce und eine der Führerinnen der italienischen FaschistInnen, bedankte sich artig: “Wie schön, dieser Gruß. Das hat mich sehr bewegt.” Und auch Italiens Ministerpräsident Berlusconi findet das alles nicht so schlimm: “Ich kenne Di Canio sehr gut, er ist ein anständiger Typ. Er ist nur ein wenig extrovertiert.” Beim nächsten Auswärtsspiel in Florenz taten es die Irriducibili dann ihrem Idol nach. “Der saluto romano spiegelt unsere Ideen wieder”, erklärte Fabrizio Toffolo, Chef der Irriducibili. “Wir gehen schließlich nicht einfach nur ins Stadion, um ein Fußballspiel zu sehen. Wir wollen dort auch unseren politischen Standpunkt vertreten.”

Im Dezember 2005, als Lazio in der kommunistischen Hochburg Livorno spielte, zeigte Di Canio erneut seinen Fans den faschistischen Gruß, eine Woche später gegen Juventus Turin wiederholte sich das Schauspiel. Doch im roten Livorno schien ihm das kein Glück zu bringen, Lazio verlor 1:2.

Livorno verpflichtet

Für Livorno spielt auch Christiano Lucarelli, italienischer Torschützenkönig in der vergangenen Saison. Wer Spieler von Livorno ist, stellt sich in eine andere Tradition: Livorno ist eine rote Hafenstadt, in Livorno wurde der PCI, die Kommunistische Partei Italiens, gegründet. Lucarelli pflegt ein enges Verhältnis zu seinen Fans. Er identifiziert sich mit den kommunistischen Ultras der Brigate Autonome Livornesi, deren Gründungsjahr 1999 er als Trikotnummer (99) trägt. Die Fans von Livorno spannen schon mal über die ganze Tribüne ein riesiges Hammer-und-Sichel-Transparent, um ihre Meinung zu verdeutlichen. Der Wermutstropfen: die meisten Fans sind überzeugte StalinistInnen. Damit kann sich Christiano Lucarelli allerdings nicht identifizieren, er verehrt unter anderem Che Guevara als “Synonym für Freiheit und proletarische Revolution”. Nun würde die Morgenrot-Redaktion Christiano in dieser Frage eher Lenin und Trotzki ans Herz legen, doch im Bekenntnis zur proletarischen Revolution werden wir uns finden.

Die Faust geballt

Bis vor kurzem ballte Christiano nach jedem seiner Tore die Faust zum roten Gruß. Der italienische Verband belegte das übrigens mit dreimal mehr Strafe als die faschistische Pose von Di Canio. Seit einiger Zeit verzichtet Christiano allerdings auf den roten Gruß, er möchte nicht mit Di Canio verglichen werden. Doch dies ist keine Abkehr von seinen Ideen.Er bekennt: “Ich werde immer linker”. Und als Fans von Livorno verhaftet wurden, weil sie bei einem Spiel gegen Lazio in Auseinandersetzungen geraten waren, bezahlte Christiano aus eigener Tasche die Heimreise.

Christiano Lucarellis Vater ist Hafenarbeiter. Und Christiano weiß, wo er herkommt: In Turin hatte er sich selbst das Gehalt gekürzt, als die Tore ausblieben. Es gebe zu viel Geld im Fußball, meinte er: “Die Werftarbeiter, die ins Stadion kommen und sich von uns hoch bezahlten Profis Zerstreuung erwarten, haben Besseres verdient.”

Viele Linke betrachten Fußball ein wenig abfällig. 22 Verrückte laufen einem Ball nach. Das mag stimmen. Doch Fußball ist gleichzeitig auch ein Spiegel der Gesellschaft, nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Es gibt zahlreiche “rechte” Fans, gleichzeitig stammen aber auch viele Vereine aus der ArbeiterInnenbewegung, ihre Geschichte lässt sich in ihren Vereinsnamen oder ihren Farben ablesen. Nicht umsonst heißt etwa Steyr´s Fußballklub in alter ArbeiterInnentradition “Vorwärts” und trägt Rot als Farbe des Vereins, ebenso wie die “Roten Teufel aus Favoriten”, der Wiener FavAC. Manchmal bestimmen oder verändern auch die Fans das Erscheinungsbild des Vereins, so die antifaschistischen Fans des Wiener Sportclubs oder die linke Kurve von Wacker Tirol in Österreichs höchster Spielklasse. Viele junge Fans werden so politisiert und lernen, dass Fußball und Faschismus eben nicht das Gleiche ist. Und wenn dann das nächste Mal Livorno gegen Lazio spielt, werden diese jungen Fans wissen, wem sie die Daumen drücken …

So, by now we all know that Paolo Di Canio earned himself the memorable nickname “Penis Face” while playing – or not – under the watchful eye of Fabio Capello.

With this in mind, as we digest the final 30 minutes of “Grand Slam Sunday”, let’s see if we can match the body parts with the players in FC’s new England squad - starting with the goalkeepers.

Naturally we don’t know who Fabio’s going to pick, although it’s safe to say we can rule Paolo Di Canio out on several counts. So we’re going with Steve McClaren’s final England squad on the grounds they can’t all be dropped… can they?

Paul “Wanky Foot” Robinson - Best remembered on the international scene for a minor incident involving his foot, a divot, a football, and some jubilant Croatians. Probably going to be Capello’s first choice goalkeeper for the Switzerland game unless FC decides to be different for the sake of it.

David “Arse Licker “James - Always seemed far less reliable at international level than in the domestic game, where he’s probably the most consistent English keeper in the Premier League. Alas, he may have been a little too hasty in kissing up to the new manager. Writing in The Guardian this weekend, here is the headline for his piece:

Scott “Wobble Gloves” Carson - Will he ever play for England again? The Croatians, momentarily unsettled to discover Wanky Foot had been dropped, were soon happily back on track once Carson had scooped an innocuous, speculative effort into the back of his own net, scarcely minutes into his debut. Capello would be a brave man to pop Scott back in goal… ever. Sorry son. Everyone deserves a second chance, but… no.

Style

The buzz word on the lips of all Spurs fans since the dawn of time (well since around 1995), is ‘style’. We only really started to talk about it when we stopped seeing it. The older generation will harp on about the style-laden side of the 60s, while those of my generation will reminisce about growing up watching the 1980s teams of Hoddle, Ardiles, Gascoigne, Waddle and Andy Gray.

Since Ossie’s dream turned into everyone’s nightmare during his stint as manager, we haven’t seen too much style at the Lane. Gerry Francis’ hot and cold reign as manager was never one containing much style or substance, while Christian Gross and George Graham have failed likewise to produce a fluent passing machine.

But do we really miss the style, or do we miss success more? Is the current lack of success under George Graham the real reason why he gets so much stick from Spurs fans for being a ‘gooner’ and not playing the beautiful game the way Spurs fans have been brought up?

The Charlton Syndrome

In February 1986, a similar decision to the one taken by Alan Sugar and the board at Spurs, was taken by the FAI (Football Association of Ireland). They appointed English World Cup winner, Jack Charlton, as the new manager of the Republic of Ireland. Ireland were never a nation who garnered respect in the footballing world, despite only missing out on qualification for the 1982 World Cup on goal difference. But with attendences and interest in the national team waning, the FAI took a brave step in appointing Charlton.

The first problem was that Charlton was an Englishman. Never before had a non-Irishman held the position. Now if Charlton was from Trinidad or Lithuania, then there may not have been as much of a fuss made, but to appoint an Englishman as manager of the working classes great team was seen as a massive faux pas.

The second problem (and this was to be proven in the next ten years) was that Charlton did not play the beautiful game as paying punters might like to have seen it. Now Ireland, poor a team as they were, did have players who oozed class such as Liam Brady, Ronnie Whelan and Paul McGrath. How would Charlton incorporate these players into the team?

Fast Forward

It’s late 1998 and Spurs are a team in disrepair. Relegation has become a bit of a worry far too often in the preceding years and Chairman Alan Sugar needs to act. Having just released the suffering Christian Gross from his managerial duties, Sugar knew that this time he could afford no mistakes. He made a brave decision on the 1st October 1998 when he appointed former Arsenal legend, George Graham, as new manager of Spurs. The outcry was audible in Trinidad and Lithuania.

The first problem was that Graham was a Gooner, an Arsenal man. Ok so there had been Terry Neil’s hugely unsuccessful stint in charge in the 1970s, but this was now and this was real.

The second problem was that Graham did not play the beautiful game as the Spurs fan would like to see it. Now Spurs, poor a team as they were, did have players who oozed class such as David Ginola and … eh … well you get the point.

Analogy

Ok, so in order to look at this analogy we have to be able to compare apples and oranges, or international and club football, if you like. But it’s not that difficult as the principle factors are the same…football, dodgy manager, ethical issues and paying punters.

That brings me back to whether or not it is style or success we miss at Spurs. The two are not mutually exclusive, true, but imagine you had to choose one or the other.

Jack the God

When Jack Charlton had his defence pump the long ball to his chosen forward (Stapleton, Cascarino, Quinn), who in turn knocked it down to the attacking midfielder (Galvin, Houghton, Townsend), it wasn’t pretty. But despite the dull-as-dishwater approach, he brought unparalleled success to the country, the likes of which will never be seen again. Lansdowne Road was sold out every game, the fans were unwavering in their support for the Boys in Green.

And that wasn’t all. Charlton quickly bumped out crowd favourites like David O’Leary and Liam Brady – not because they weren’t good enough, but because he didn’t like them, or they didn’t suit his gameplan. Liam Brady was the most naturally talented players Ireland had ever had, and indeed in his younger days was one of the best in Europe. To shun the midfield legend was a bold step, but it was one that Irish fans took in their stride. Charlton is a complete and utter God on this island. And why? Success.

George the Anti-Christ

And as George Graham pumps the long ball to Ferdinand and sells Spurs most naturally talented player, how come he is reviled rather than revered? Again the answer is success, or lack of it.

It’s easy for Spurs fans to sit there and mouth off about how George is a gooner and they would never accept him despite how much success he brings. I don’t think it’s true, because there is nothing but a bout of success to change one’s outlook on life.

All those Irish fans who were apathetic regarding the Irish team were quickly converted despite the Brady situation, and despite the dull football. When it came down to it, the arrival of relative success was an adrenaline rush that no Irish person could resist getting caught up in. Likewise if George Graham brought Tottenham Champions League football with a string of 1-0 victories, those Spurs fans would forget about the direct passing, and soon put aside their Arsenal prejudices.

And don’t sit there telling me it’s not true because you can’t possible know either way until it happens!

And finally…

He’s been described as ‘an accident waiting to happen’, and in the FA Cup Fourth Round game between Manchester United and West Ham, that projected accident occurred in the most bizarre of circumstances.

When Paolo Di Canio beat the offside trap to coolly slot past Fabien Barthez in a one-on-one situation, one might not normally blame a goalkeeper. But when your goalkeeper stands there, a hand arrogantly raised appealing for a non-existent offside, you should throw the book at him. United’s treble dreams are destroyed now due to this one moment of lunacy.

What will Alex Ferguson’s reaction be? Drop Barthez? Make him play with the reserves? Sell him? No doubt Ferguson had a quiet word, but he wouldn’t want to publicly criticise one of his star signings. He reserves that sort of treatment for others.

And I’m sure Bosnich was sitting at home, eating chocolates, have a great old laugh.
