At first, Richard Fulton says he wasn’t particularly excited by the thought of having braces in his 60s. After struggling with migraines for years, however, the idea that the misalignment of his teeth could be the culprit certainly gave him something to think about.

“At this advanced stage of my life, I really didn’t want to go through orthodontic procedures,” he shares. “My dentist referred me to an orthodontist I really liked, but she indicated that it would be a two-year process. That’s a long period of time to deal with braces, especially being an insurance salesman.”

When his periodontist told him about a new procedure that could significantly shorten the treatment time, orthodontics became much more appealing, Richard says. “Dr. Kenzik explained the procedure to me, and then I called and got a second opinion from my dentist. I said, I just don’t think I can deal with braces for two years. What would you do? My dentist said, I would go to Dr. Kenzik and have the surgery.”

Accelerated outcomes

Richard’s situation provides an excellent example, says Dr. Kenzik. “He had a bilateral crossbite, and in order to correct that, he was going to need three years of orthodontics and palatal expansion. Once he understood the concept behind periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO), he knew he would be able to handle seven months of treatment.”
