At first, Richard Fulton says he wasn’t particularly excited by the thought of having braces in his 60s. After struggling with migraines for years, however, the idea that the misalignment of his teeth could be the culprit certainly gave him something to think about.

“At this advanced stage of my life, I really didn’t want to go through orthodontic procedures,” he shares. “My dentist referred me to an orthodontist I really liked, but she indicated that it would be a two-year process. That’s a long period of time to deal with braces, especially being an insurance salesman.”

When his periodontist told him about a new procedure that could significantly shorten the treatment time, orthodontics became much more appealing, Richard says. “Dr. Kenzik explained the procedure to me, and then I called and got a second opinion from my dentist. I said, I just don’t think I can deal with braces for two years. What would you do? My dentist said, I would go to Dr. Kenzik and have the surgery.”

Accelerated outcomes

Raymond A. Kenzik, DDS, P.A., is a board-certified dentist with advanced training in periodontics and implant dentistry. In practice since 1975, Dr. Kenzik has seen an amazing evolution of knowledge, technique, and technology, including recent innovations that integrate periodontic procedures with orthodontic treatment.

“Many adults have reached a point in their lives where they want to do something about crooked teeth, an opportunity they might not have had when they were youngsters, but they refuse to do this because adult orthodontics can sometimes be a two- or three-year proposition,” the doctor says.

“With this rapid orthodontic movement technique, however, the bone is changed in such a way that the teeth can be moved, and three years worth of work can be accomplished in seven months,” he continues. “This turns out to be a key factor for many adults who decide to have the orthodontics done.”

Richard’s situation provides an excellent example, says Dr. Kenzik. “He had a bilateral crossbite, and in order to correct that, he was going to need three years of orthodontics and palatal expansion. Once he understood the concept behind periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO), he knew he would be able to handle seven months of treatment.”
