Halloween and we have no pumpkin. I don’t know why we didn’t learn our lesson last year, when we left it too late and ALMOST couldn’t find one. This year we couldn’t. I’m not overly interested in Halloween, and we get very few trick-or-treaters, but it seems somehow a bit wrong to not have a pumpkin. (we have candy, that much we managed) So when we returned empty-handed I felt we really had to figure out something so that our house would be at least a little bit festive. So I threw together these quick little paper-bag luminaries. I hastily cut out some spooky silhouettes from black construction paper and glued them on the bag. When they were dry I dumped a bit of rice in the bottom, to weigh them down. I was going to use tea lights in glass jars but…. surprise surprise, we only have one. And anyway, it didn’t seem to be giving off enough light. So we stuck a flash-light lantern and a headlamp in instead. Ta-Da!

In October alone, they made as many as 3,687 paper bags

Students to make a minimum of 2,500 paper bags and provide these to shops and eateries

Project aimed at persuading people to replace plastic carry bags with those made of paper

COIMBATORE: Students of St. Joseph’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School on Tiruchi Road have added a new dimension to the war on non-biodegradable plastic bags.

In this month alone, they have made 3,687 paper bags, accommodating a significant social commitment in their tight schedule for academics.

Under a project initiated by the alumni association of St.Joseph’s school, the students of Classes VI to XII will make a minimum of 2,500 paper bags and provide these to shops and eateries.

The PULSE (People United to Love and Save the Earth) Project will work to replace the plastic carry bags with those made of paper across the city.

Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra launched the distribution of the bags at the school on Wednesday by handing over the first set of paper bags to Managing Director of Nilgiris M. Chellaiyan.

Treasurer of Residents Awareness Association (RAAC) of Coimbatore R.R. Balasundaram was among those present.

Secretary of the alumni association Jane Melanie said another set of bags was handed over the Managing Director of Thulasi Pharmacy Ramakrishnan.

Some more paper bags were given to the bakery located opposite the school and also to the canteen inside the institution that was run by a women self-help group.

“Sometimes the children buy lunch from the canteen and the food is packed in a plastic carry bag. We have provided the paper bags in order to eliminate the use of the plastic bags,” she said.

Appreciating the project, the Corporation Commissioner said: “Apart from projecting the paper bags as a viable alternative, the awareness creation will be very important.

“We are not yet in a situation where plastic bags can be replaced totally.

“But, there are alternatives such as paper bags and jute bags and this awareness is being created through such projects.

Private establishments could promote paper bags by buying these from such students’ groups or self-help groups.

“We want to try out a similar initiative in the Corporation schools and the alumni association of St. Joseph’s school has offered to train the teachers and students,” he said.

A batch of teachers was trained by a resource person to make paper bags. In turn, the teachers trained the students.

Representatives of RAAC had also offered to train the students further.

Melanie, the Librarian at the school for girls, said the entire paper bag programme was being pursued with a sense of social commitment and also a spirit of competition within the campus.

“We have four houses and the one that makes the maximum number of bags gets a rolling shield. As for individual award, the student who makes the highest number is crowned Miss Gaia.

“The title is named after the Greek Goddess who protects the environment,” Ms. Melanie said. “The competition was intense and Loyalty House got the shield. D.M. Venkatalakshmi, a Class IX student, made 1,461 bags (out of the 3,687) and won the Miss Gaia title,” she said.

Mr. Balasundaram said the project at the school was a very good initiative, especially because it involves students.

Now, the message would reach their parents and this way the campaign against plastic bags would expand.

The Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore offered to extend to the school the Wealth out of Waste programme it was carrying out in association with ITC.

Under this programme, ITC paid residents, institutions and commercial establishments for the plastic bags or paper waste they handed over to it.

RAJKOT – Students from different schools here have taken up an initiative to propagate mass awareness against the ill effects of using plastic bags.

Despite the ban imposed on the use of plastic bags, vegetable vendors used to sell vegetables to the customers in plastic bags.

To bring a complete stop on this illegal use of poly bags, students campaigned on the streets and prompted vegetable vendors to stop using plastic by distributing pamphlets and paper bags made of newspapers.

“We told all the shopkeepers and buyers to use paper bags instead of plastic bags.

Everybody behaved well and cooperated with us in our drive. Now, it seems everyone will start using paper bags,” said Rajpara Hasti, a student.

On their part, both buyers and vendors felt quite motivated and inspired by the manner in which the students explained why there was no need to use poly bags.

“When students informed us about the harmful effects of plastic bags, I started using cloth bag,” said Parul, a resident.

The student campaigners enlightened the public that polythene waste, which the stray cattle often feed on, results in damaging the digestive system as the polythene gets stuck in the intestines. (ANI)

Honestly, who is the moron who came up with the idea of putting paper bags over their faces on Sunda

Honestly, who is the moron who came up with the idea of putting paper bags over their faces on Sunday against the Buccaneers? I know we lost to the Lions, it was a tough loss, the team looked horrible and even though Campbell threw for 340 yards, it didn’t help us win. What you need to understand is that the Lions of 2009 are NOT the Lions of 2008. Are they Super Bowl or playoff bound? Most likely not. The season is not over, we have a record of 1-2 and we can easily bounce back from this. We’re only 1/4th of the way through the season after Sunday’s game.

Take a look around the league. The Arizona Cardinals, NFC Champions are 1-2, the Pittsburgh Steelers, AFC and Super Bowl Champions are 1-2, the Tennessee Titans are 0-3, the Carolina Panthers are 0-3 and the Miami Dolphins are 0-3. Were all of these teams not exceptionally good last year, much better than us? They either have the same record or are worse and just like the Redskins, they can all make a bounce back.

If I see anyone one with a bag over their face in my section on Sunday, I will make sure you do not want to come to another game ever again. Save your self the embarrassment of being heckled at as well as looking like an idiot and support the Redskins, otherwise sell your tickets to a real fan who wants to see them play live.

I’m participating in a 3rd round of a creative exercise called “Doodle Swap” – an organized swap of original, trading-card-sized art between artists, designers and illustrators.

These tiny works of art are only 2.5″ x 3.5″.

One original piece is created for each person in the group – thus, how ever many that may be, you will receive that many original pieces back.

These doodles cannot be photocopied or printed out — and I chose colored pencils for my medium, working in happy little circles.

Are you able to guess my theme yet? I’ll post all eight in the next couple days…

1 With the growing concerns over the use of plastic bags in the environment, the use of paper bags p

1 With the growing concerns over the use of plastic bags in the environment, the use of paper bags provides us with a much more environmental approach to storing and serving foods and any number of other products. The cost of paper bags make them an economical choice as well and the way they hold up to carrying and storing hot foods makes them an ideal choice in the marketplace.

There are a number of styles and sizes of paper bags that can be used for food storage and carrying hot foods. There are also a number of extra strength paper bags that will hold up well when they become wet. The food industry is now recognizing the versatility and superior quality of paper bags with bakeries, fish and chip stores and most major fast food companies all using paper to serve their foods.

Condensation is a big issue with a lot of hot food stores. When hot foods are transported in plastic bags, the mixture of heated food and enclosed spaces creates condensation. This causes the food inside the bag to become soggy and lose its freshness. This is most often the reason that paper bags are used to hold hot foods when they are being carried from place to place. The paper allows the food to ‘breathe’ and minimizes condensation.

As mentioned before, another great benefits is that paper bags cost less than their plastic counterparts. In business, finding ways to increase quality and lower price at the same time is a winning situation.

The transportation of food is also another big concern that was raised by many food companies. Well in this case, food companies can breathe easy. Paper bags keep the food hot without creating any of the damage that can come when a plastic bag is used.Many of the styles of bags have a combination of paper and foil to keep the foods safe during transportation. On top of this some plastics don’t hold up well under heat and can melt and become brittle.

Paper bags also commonly used in take away establishments because of their strength and durability. They typically hold their shape well and are less likely break or become weakened during transport

As society becomes more aware of the environmental impact of plastic bags, it is important that we seek out other ways to store and carry food and other items. From the grocery bag to the carry out restaurant bag, paper can provide a great many alternatives to the plastic bag. Paper is biodegradable and has much fewer environmental problems than those that come with the use of plastic bags.

Every weekend, one of my two little munchkins and I go to Starbuck’s here in Loveland. The kiddos take turns, and each of them gets some time alone with Mama every other week – we start off with a little breakfast and drink (chocolate milk for them, coffee for me), and then decide where we’re going to go or what we’re going to do when we’re done.

Becca generally likes to get the fruit cup or the protein plate (is watching your eating genetically engraved in a girl’s psyche? Holy cow – we eat well, but I never TAUGHT her that she couldn’t have an occasional doughnut!) She also usually chooses to go do some shopping of one sort or another. A week and a half ago, she wanted to go to Barnes and Noble, and we lucked into a painting demo for kids that the local art league was doing. Needless to say, this was heaven for both of us!

Last weekened, Aidan went with me, and didn’t really want to go anywhere. He wanted to draw, though, and since I had no paper, I thought we could draw on the little brown paper bags that Starbuck’s puts their pastries in. As I was drawing – ZOT! A really, really cool idea struck me.

Wouldn’t it be fun and cool if we got a bunch of people together who ALL did a small piece of work on the pastry bags? It would be a cool little exhibit for the local Starbuck’s – and great, free advertising as well, a great way for people to get to know each other and for local artists to show off their talent, and just plain have some fun! I’m envisioning something as simple as having markers or small paints availabe up to as complex as having mixed-media materials available as well.

I also used to do book arts – wouldn’t it be REALLY cool to bind all these mini-artworks into a book? We could scan the bags and/or color copy them and bind them so each artist could get a copy, if we did this in a small group. We could also get to know and inspire each other…

There are many really cool, interesting possible iterations of this idea, and I’d like to try it. I’m not sure how to begin – I guess maybe talking to the managers of our local Starbuck’s would be a good place to start…all it would cost them is a stack of the paper bags. Maybe we could even buy one for 50 cents to a dollar, with a percentage of the purchase going to help a local charity – like a homeless shelter or battered women’s shelter?

I’d be interested to know if you all have any other ideas – let me know!

It is said that the world population is nearing 7 billion. Every day, there are billions of people who go to sleep hungry, and 21st century technology has not been able to conquer this. Every year in the face of hunger, there are millions of tones of produce which gets wasted. Now, with the advent of green plastic bags, an important step has been taken towards controlling waste.

How many times we had bought fresh fruits and vegetables, brought them over in plastic or paper bags and then forgot them in the refrigerator, or worse still, in the plastic bag themselves. Bananas and apples waste no time in turning itself into waste.

Green plastic bags offer a novel breakthrough – fruits and vegetables can be stored for a pretty long time using them. It means direct savings for the people and less food wasted, so it directly contributes to curbing world hunger.

Of course, a number of lower quality so called green bags does spoil produce, but a number of reputed bags companies does produce some great stuff. If you want to save some money while at the same time feel good about it – green bags may be for you.

We are right and they are wrong.

There might be a lot of questions, lots and lots of questions asked by those seeking, but we have in our possession the ONLYright answer. We do not engage with people different from us – that is what E-mergents do. We just shout at everybody that we have the answer and our answer is better – because we say so.

We are not interested in arguments for a new way of thinking. Arguments just confuse us and being confused is what E-mergents are. They don’t even agree with each other – how confusing is that??? Why do we need a new way of thinking if this one kept us ignorantsafe for so long and isolated those infidels that think differently from us? Why should we tamper with something that works… for us?

I know it’s not just me that hate those different from me and is never wrong. It is part of the identity of us religious people. We need to be right. That is how TRUE religion works.

We have locked ourselves in this stronghold – an unmovable, solid and unshakable defence (until these E-mergents came along). If we bend, move or give in on any part of our stronghold it will break apart leaving us exposed to all sorts of doctrines. Our Truth stronghold needs to be defended, protected, guarded and maintained at ALL cost (If we have to lie we will). The idea is to keep foreign ideas out like this one. And that is what we are here to do! We are always angry, afraid and ready to attack anyone’s character who dares to disagree.

If this kind of faith doesn’t work for you we know you are not a REAL Christian like us. Don’t ask us to drink coffee with you. Don’t write comments we don’t like or ask us to prove anything (like accusations that emergents believe all gods are the same, all roads lead to heaven and that you can believe anything you want) – we will delete it. We know what you believe and don’t need to prove anything.

If we say it is so, it is so!

If someone says something we will tell you what they REALLY mean. Don’t waist your time looking for the source. NO! We will tell you what everybody and anybody mean when they say things. If what they say something and you think its means something different than what we say it means then either you are confused and wrong or they are, NOT US.

I woke up hungover. Saturday night spilled into Sunday morning with no sign of the snow that had been previously predicted. My apartment was so empty it echoed; boxes were still packed and I probably would have been lonely if it wasn’t for the security of youth and the constant inner dialogue. “It didn’t snow, weather said it won’t until tomorrow, I guess I have to drive to the island.” I usually try to make nights out of my trips–6 hours of visiting barely makes three hours of driving enticing–but it was my father’s birthday and I had already told him I wasn’t coming because of the weather. I woke up, showered and decided to head to Rhode Island.

I walked up to the front stairs and saw a familiar sight: my father sitting on the couch watching TV, tapping his fingers and occasionally taking a drag on his cigarette. After casual conversation my father got off the couch, walked into the dining room and returned with a worn crumpled paper bag. He pulled out a Portable CD player, a pair of large studio headphones and a Frank Zappa album, Hot Rats. We had a sound system, but he wanted me to listen to the guitar solo the way he did in the Army. No, not on drugs, but with headphones. We bought a microwave for my new apartment and ate cake to celebrate his birthday, but really we spent most of the day listening to music. I drove back to Boston right around the time it started snowing. I saw three accidents on the expressway and got drunk to celebrate the snowstorm that was going to allow me to sleep in Monday.

********************************

The phone woke me up that morning. I shoveled through a foot of snow and followed plows like a funeral procession down Route 24.

A week later I was at a bar my parents frequented and one of the patrons walked up to me and said, “You know, the last time I saw your father he had a crumpled paper-bag full of music he was showing everyone”

I thought for a second, and said “Me too.”

I wrote an article in 2008 about the importance of keeping discernmentalists’ true identity secret. It came to my knowledge that since then there has been a renewed effort by Emergents to fish around for the identity of these precious protectors of our Truth. Last night my wife reminded me of this article and I decided to dust it off and give it a make over to speak to this very relevant issue (Not that I want to be relevant – that is something that the Seeker Movement and Emergents do). So here we go and to all who think they know who I am I say: “Bwahahhahaa…”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It came to my attention that certain people are investigating, searching and asking around to find the true identity behind Protector of the Truth Will Farel VX. This is unfortunate, for to seek after things that should stay hidden is a wild goose chase, becoming followers of beasts.
In a recent comment left on our About/Rules of Engagement page the commenter gave this bit of “wisdom”:
You know what else a true Christian would never do? Talk about folks anonymously on the internet whether their targets are “christian” or not…….
This poor soul has never felt the hate that we feel here because we tramplestand on the Truth. We undergo constant persecution on the Internet with people saying the most hateful things against us and even threatening us personally. All because we tell our Truth without compromising it by the Law of Love.
I learned from I.Todyaso that if you ever publish a photo of yourself that you should put a bag over your head. There are rumours that he and Carlos Iggy Shelton share the same body – that is preposterous! I have super discerning x-ray sight that can tell that there is much more hair under that bag than there is on Iggy’s head.
Better still than wearing a disguise is putting up a picture of something representing you but is not you. Something like a baby elephant; or of Calvin’s trusty sidekick, Hobbes.
It is of vital importance for a discerner to hide his/her identity in order to safe guard their reputation (in case people think we are soft and prone to love anyone beside ourselves) and even life. You never know when one of those emergent heretics decide to do some Transcendental Meditation and comes to haunt you in your very own home!
Will Farel XV
Hiding from for the Truth
P.S: This disqualifies quite a number of previously thought real discerners. Sorry Ingrid!
My neighbors invited me over for brunch, and it’s my third “good-bye” party — interesting for someone who’s been mostly home bound:-)  I wanted to give them something of myself, but much of my “tools” are packed up.  So, I did a small collage and mounted it on black foam core board.    I hope they like it.
COLLAGE DE LE MER ET LA CIEL
At the same time, I’ve made a new online friend who is quite an amazing person, and I’ve hooked up with an artist in Chicago who is going to “show me the ropes”.
Sad and glad.  Keeping my eyes facing forward as I have 2 weeks to finish up in this house which is no longer mine!
************************************************************
Just a word about collage.  Many people do collages using pictures from magazines and collected bits of stuff.  I have tried that several times, and just can’t do it for the life of me!  But this kind of work with translucent color and some pattern is fun for me.  I paint tissue paper with diluted acrylics because store-bought colored tissue is unstable and the color fades too easily.  Then I overprint some of it with stamps, brayers and other tools.  The process of tearing up bits of paper and deciding where to put them is very spontaneous.  Altho I can rest at any time (which is great), decisions happen in the moment – there can be no plan ahead of time.  I’ve been making much larger collages, but decided to try this smaller size (about 6″ x 10″) and find that it’s easier to manage.  I think it might sell better, also……..if I ever get around to that:-)
First, I’d like to thank all the History Geek followers who stopped by for my first post and left thoughtful comments. OK, OK! That crafty minx, Holly, has done it: I’ve joined the Twit-ophiles and have added a link to this blog. Can’t say how much I’ll be Tweeting (and I have to say that I can’t ponder Twitter without being reminded of Stephen Colbert’s recent giggle-producing twaddle), but for all the folks who said “join Twitter already,” it’s done.
Now on to the tape creation. This is a CD Packet inspired by THE tape and this video by Angi’s Scraps. It’s main components? Paper bags. My supermarket wraps wine bottles in these bags, so I have a lot of these on hand. Any-hoo, add some ephemera, rub-ons and a slew of rubber stamp images (there are 35+ individual images in this piece) et voila. It’s recycled and it’s Kraft paper (my favorite medium). It’s French-themed (mais bien sur!) and the CD’s are gypsy jazz standards by Django Reinhardt (click here to listen to his Sweet Georgia Brown, while viewing the pix). Finished size is 6″ x 5.75″
