Downloading trial versions of programs and playing with them is a little hobby of mine. Every time I

Downloading trial versions of programs and playing with them is a little hobby of mine. Every time I hear about a new one, I have to check it out. In this way I’ve found many useful writing programs: Scrivener, VoodooPad, Macjournal. I’ve also wasted a lot of time when I could have been writing.

I need a program that will taunt me into writing. It would look like the Paperclip Guy in Microsoft Word 97. When I pull out Chapter 1 for the eleventh time, the Paperclip Guy would say, “It looks like you’re trying to revise this again. Would you like me to kick your ass into Chapter 2?” When my characters decide to go on a quest to find the magic-thingy so they can stop the evil wizard from destroying the world, it would say, “It looks like you’ve run out of original ideas. Would you like some advice? a) Give up writing; b) you’re a loser.”

A while ago I wrote about Scrivener, one of the very best writing programs out there. Unfortunately non-mac users can’t take advantage of it. A good enough reason to convert to mac, as I see it, but I will keep my religious views to myself.

Recently I found another program, less well-known than Scrivener, but doing many of the same things — and it has a Windows version. It’s called SuperNotecards, by Mindola (www.mindola.com). At $29 it’s a bit cheaper than Scrivener, and provides some different tools.

If you were to ask Dax, “Do you have any index cards?” the reply would never be, “Maybe. I’ll look in my desk.” Dax would say, “What size? What color? Neon or regular? Lines or no lines? Do you want them in a pad or loose? How many packs do you need?”

I am embarrassed to admit how many index cards I have in my desk, in my drawer, in my closet, in my briefcase, in my glovebox… I love index cards. I use them for everything — quotations and questions, poems and notes.

When I was in seventh grade, we learned how to write a term paper using 3×5 index cards – one card for each fact and reference. Our teacher had already forced us to write a hierarchical outline with Roman and Arabic numerals, capital and small letters. But cards were much easier; information could be shuffled around more easily. To please her, I re-wrote my outline several times, and still only got a C. I decided that hierarchical outlines were a way for teachers to weed out those who were not really serious about term papers. No outline, you get a D. My outline was only just ‘adequate,’ not ‘complete and detailed.’ Notecards were the way to go, I decided.

I have found several notecard programs for computer and for phone, but most are for making flashcards, not so useful for writing. SuperNotecards is made for writing. Scrivener uses cards, too, but SNC allows you to categorize and link them in many more ways. There are so many things to think about while writing a novel – continuity of characters and plot, the introduction of backstory and foreshadowing. SNC excels at this kind of planning. It’s made to organize and link pieces of information in various ways, useful for both fiction and non-fiction.

You could write your entire novel on cards, but that’s not really what it’s designed for. I switch over to Scrivener when I’m ready to write. I may not use SNC for every project, but when the amount of information I’m dealing with becomes overwhelming, this program perfect. Its flexibility allows me to use it in different ways — to create a broad outline of my story or to detail every aspect of every scene.

If you are more a seat-of-the-pants writer, not an outliner or organizer, SuperNotecards may not appeal to you. But if you’re struggling to get your story together, or find yourself re-reading pages of revision notes, this program may surprise you.

When the other ants saw him, they ran away screaming. The ant stood with his prize and waited for the queen. When she arrived he presented her with his gift and as just reward she annointed him the first priest to the royal blood line.

Image by AaronSimsCompany

Probably most of you would ask this question frequently and yet the answer is not so obvious. If they truly exist then where are they? Perhaps that they’d not visit earth due to the biohazardous atmosphere or is it the conflict between the same race but different skin-tone? For those UFO hunter, Alien do exist in somewhat logic, why? Because if our galaxy is able to support and maintain life on earth then why don’t the others?

Rumor has it that Alien had came before during the ancient Egyptian period where fellow alien would help them with their technology to advance the human race to a new height which is “The Great Pyramid of Giza” where Alien help them to build it with ease rather than thousands of slave to carry a chunk of rock (limestone) on their backs which is approximately 10 tons per piece and travel through their nearby quarry or 500 miles away from Aswan.

There’re a staggering amount of ridiculous or counterfeit claims which implies that some of us (human) had been abducted by aliens, been through the spaceship of aliens and other’s baloney claims. The question is: why would they visit us, since we’re so miraculously primitive? Perhaps they’d have wanted to observe our abrasive yet droll behavior of daily basis.

Apart from that, there’s a place where alien hunters, UFO hunters and so on, would like to pay a visit to Roswell, New Mexico, why? Because that is a particular location for UFO sightings and thousands or even millions of believer of “Aliens”. Besides that people’d had sought for aliens existence ever since in about July 8, 1947. Since the late 1970s the incident has been the subject of intense controversy and the subject of conspiracy theories as to the true nature of the object which crashed. The US military recover the debris from an experimental high-altitude surveillance balloon belonging to a classified program named “Mogul“; however, many UFO proponents maintain that in fact a crashed alien craft and bodies were recovered, and that the military then engaged in a cover-up. And those cover-up are weather balloons rather than a flying saucer.

Those are not the only cover-up that is used but another one which is located in German, and why is it? Well, the Nazi German had started a project which is called “Operation Paperclip” whereby they’d had created a saucer-like plane led by Dr. Herbert A. Wagner, a highly regarded expert in aerodynamics, controls and guidance. Wagner is the man for the job where he’d created the fuel-efficient, aerodynamical structured UFO for the first time. It was the greatest achievement for the Nazi which is in the command of Adolf Hitler, Hitler wanted this invention to cross the Us border surreptitiously and take them by surprise but then the US army found out the project and halt the making of it, as for those scientists who is working for the Nazi, they will be capture and will be working for the US army.

script/plugin install git://github.com/thoughtbot/paperclip.git

config.gem 'paperclip', :source => 'http://gemcutter.org'

script/generate paperclip user picture

#db/migrate/20091129014122_add_attachments_picture_to_user.rb
class AddAttachmentsPictureToUser < ActiveRecord::Migration
  def self.up
    add_column :users, :picture_file_name, :string
    add_column :users, :picture_content_type, :string
    add_column :users, :picture_file_size, :integer
    add_column :users, :picture_updated_at, :datetime
  end

  def self.down
    remove_column :users, :picture_file_name
    remove_column :users, :picture_content_type
    remove_column :users, :picture_file_size
    remove_column :users, :picture_updated_at
  end
end

#app/models/user.rb
class User < ActiveRecord::Base
  # Paperclip
  has_attached_file :picture,
    :styles => {
      :thumb=> "100x100#",
      :small  => "150x150>" }
end

has_attached_file :picture,
  :styles => {
    :thumb=> "100x100#",
    :small  => "150x150>" }
    :custom => Proc.new {
      |user| # devuelve la instancia actual del usuario
      "#{user.photo_width}x#{user.photo_height}>" }
  }

:less_than => 5.megabytes # menos de 5 Mb
:greater_than => 500.kilobytes # más de 5 Mb
:in => (100..5.megabytes) # de 100 bytes hasta 5 Mb

validates_attachment_content_type (nombre, opciones = {})

:content_type => ['image/jpeg', 'image/png']

#app/models/user.rb
class User < ActiveRecord::Base
  # Paperclip
  has_attached_file :picture,
    :styles => {
      :thumb=> "100x100#",
      :small  => "150x150>" }
  # Validaciones de Paperclip
  validates_attachment_size :picture, :less_than => 2.megabytes
  validates_attachment_content_type :picture, :content_type => ['image/jpeg', 'image/png']
end

<!-- app/views/user/new.html.erb -->
<% form_for @user, :html => { :multipart => true } do |form| %>
  <ol>
    <!-- Otros campos del usuario ... -->
    <li>
      <%= form.label :picture, "Picture" %>
      <%= form.file_field :picture %>
    <li>
      <%= form.submit "Save Picture!" %>
    </li>
  </ol>
<% end %>

<%= image_tag @user.picture.url %>
<%= image_tag @user.picture.url(:thumb) %>
<%= image_tag @user.picture.url(:small) %>

#app/controllers/users_controller.rb
class UsersController < ApplicationController
  #...

  def new
    @user = User.new
  end

  def create
    @user = User.create(params[:user])
  end

  def update
    @user = current_user
    if @user.update_attributes(params[:user])
      flash[:info] = "Sus datos fueron actualizados con éxito"
      redirect_to user_path(@user)
    else
      render :action => :edit
    end
  end

  def edit
    @user = current_user
  end

  private

  def current_user
    User.find_by_id(session['user_id'])
  end
end

1.

I just applied French grammar rules to a paper being written in English [N.B. it's been over 5 months since I've written anything en francais].

example: “What makes populations vulnerables to famine is…”

As you see above, I applied the ever-annoying and hard-to-grasp French (ok fine, romance language) rule of adjective agreement. Too bad English is too good for that shit.

2.

I didn’t notice said total loss of grammatical skillz until the fucking Microsoft Word paperclip pointed it out to me.

Let’s all say it together: eff (F) em (M) ell (L)

Today’s cool experiment will teach you how to make your own crystals.

You will need:

A beaker

Paperclip

Thread (string)

Spoon

Pencil

Salt or sugar

Food colouring (you can pick the colour)

Hot water(be very careful with this)

Fill the beaker with hot water and a few drips of food colouring.

Stir in as much sugar or salt (but not both) as you can until no more can dissolve into the solution.

Tie one end of the thread to a pencil or stick and the other end to a paperclip.

Lay the pencil across the top of the beaker with the paperclip hanging into the water.

Leave the beaker in a warm place for a few days and crystals should eventually start to form in whatever colour the food colouring was that you added.

I tried Paperclip plugin with Ruby 1.9.1. Everything goes right but when i upload a image file, i go

I tried Paperclip plugin with Ruby 1.9.1. Everything goes right but when i upload a image file, i got a “Something went wrong” error in browser. In Server console i got something like :

/!\ FAILSAFE /!\

Status: 500 Internal Server Error
  invalid byte sequence in US-ASCII
    /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/actionpack-2.3.2/lib/
action_controller/vendor/rack-1.0/rack/utils.rb:320:in `=~'
    /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/actionpack-2.3.2/lib/
action_controller/vendor/rack-1.0/rack/utils.rb:320:in `block in
parse_multipart'.....etc

After some Googling, i got solution. This works fine for my application. Follow these steps:

Change Directory to where ruby 1.9.1 rack gem is installed (in my case it’s /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/rack-1.0.0/lib/rack)

Open utils.rb file

apply following patch:Line No. 1     + # coding=binary

Line No.2      +

Following lines are already present :

Line No.3            require ’set’

Line No.4            require ‘tempfile’

Around Line number 350 replace the following line:

       boundary_size = boundary.size + EOL.size

with this one:

       boundary_size = Utils.bytesize(boundary) + EOL.size

nd then follwing lines are already present:

           bufsize = 16384

           content_length -= boundary_size

4. Save utils.rb file

5. Restart Server and now able to upload and view the image file.

Patch Reference is here.

this dance is getting old. i don’t why being in the gray area is a constant occurrence in my life. i would rather know the real score than staying in the status quo. my question is, should i even wait? i feel like the clash’s song, “should i stay, or should i go?”

sometimes, i feel like i’m staying a masochistic relationship and the loser would always be me.

why then, is it so hard for me to let go and try to start anew? what is holding me back? maybe because i am scared to go out of my comfort zone and try something i haven’t done in a long time? or maybe what i have right now what i have is better than nothing. should i even settle?

the more i ask these questions, new ones pop up. it’s a sick cycle and i want to get out of it. seems like everyday is a struggle. each day i convince myself that i should settle for what i have and try to be happy with my lot. but i’m not.

this indecision is making me look weak and being weak should not be what i am right now. i don’t like it when i start to resent the things that i do when before i just did it because i am happy doing it. but as each day crawls on to the next, i’m getting more and more exhausted.

yesterday, i got to talk to somebody and i finally asked him where i stand in his life and all i got was the same gray area answer. which is but a reflection of what’s on my plate.

on some days i get the resolve to do something about my situation but it all gets drowned in all of life’s complexities. there are more questions than answers.

there are more questions than answers.

i want to do something, be somewhere else, so bad, but i just can’t and i don’t know why.

Burning in a city of ice...

We all have to work… dragging ourselves out of bed each day in order to go into our workplace where we need to expend energy and effort to get things done. But who says we can’t have fun while at work?

In a recent meeting in my company’s boardroom, I broke apart a paperclip while listening to someone talk and I realized that I had five pieces… so I laid out the five pieces to form a torso, two legs and two arms on the desk. It reminded me of the doll from the first season of Dexter that was left in Dexter’s fridge by an enemy. I then wrote out on a piece of paper Dexter’s famous line of “he’s asking me if I want to play, and yes, I want to play, I really want to play…” and left the piece of paper there in the boardroom with the paperclip pieces.

Last month, I left a note in the boardroom for others to read when they’d eventually come into the boardroom about how it makes no sense for the Wizards and Magic to play each other in the NBA since the two are supposed to go hand in hand. I went as far as explaining that any wizard playing without magic was in for a long night…

The President of the company that I work at already thinks that I’m crazy since I pull pranks on other people all the time while seemingly coming up with very creative ideas and presentations for major issues. An example: I named our software implementation project as “Project Firestarter”… we’re a lumber yard.

Other wonderful things that I’ve done are:

Changing the order of the keys on peoples’ keyboards or writing messages out of the letters on their keyboards

Attaching a computer mouse to the bottom of a chair so that when that specific person moves their chair, the mouse moves along too like as if it’s a real mouse intended to scare them

Turning everything upside-down at someone’s desk including their monitor, keyboard, chair, personal possessions, papers, stuffed animals and more

Changing the radio station everytime a specific person leaves the room intended to make that person paranoid that the radio station keeps changing

Giving a 5-minute speech in front of about 15 people for a meeting about how I tried to come up with a topic for my 5-minute speech and how I subsequently never did come up with a topic and then used the lack of a topic as my speech’s topic – and then titled the speech as “The Topic of Topics”…

Watching hip-hop videos in the boardroom and turning up the music loud enough so that when people walked by the boardroom, they’d wonder what kind of meeting was taking place and how come they were missing out

Productivity is no good if you can’t have fun doing it… might as well travel the road less traveled in order to get a wild ride from it.

“Only thing that’s on my mind is who gon’ run this town tonight…”
- Run This Town (Jay-Z)

This ones been “doing the rounds” for a few days now and we’ve finally found the breathing space to push it a little as well.

Years ago, as we still made our living selling wares on farmers markets, we once drove a hired van into the sharp corner of another traders caravan hatch… We’ll never forget the overpowering, nauseousness as we realised the windscreen was cracked.

A similar feeling gripped as as we saw the first image at papercliplamp.com

Paperclip Lamp: An idea takes shape....

We all sit and bend paperclips, we all spend our days thinking about design, form and function, we all turn a table lamp on as the hour grows later.

Yet only Seattle based David Wykes and Benoit Collette managed to see the connection.

And irritating for us as that is, we did have to laugh when we thought of the Hamburg Student show at DMY Youngsters in Berlin and how many of their lamps were almost a paperclip …but just not quite.

There is very little one need say about the paperclip lamp, it is pure design and belongs next to every MacBook on an uncluttered desk.

Fold it out when you need light and fold it down when your finished.

Fantastic.

We keep hearing about a guy who used a paperclip to trade up, in a series of swaps, until he got a house. We thought this was a myth people use to prove a point… But it turns out he really exists!

Kyle MacDonald started in July 2005 and finished in July 2006. He blogged about it and also has a book out. See Wikipedia for a timeline of his trades.
