The Kindle is the biggie for this year! Or is it? I don’t want one, somehow it seems too steri

The Kindle is the biggie for this year! Or is it? I don’t want one, somehow it seems too sterile. I like to hold a book in my hands. I want to mark my pages, write notes in the margin, feel the words. I don’t want a Kindle. Even though I love technology, and the thought of a new toy is intriguing.

But, last night I was watching Cash Cab when 2 women said Robinson Crusoe was the fictional character of Jonathan Swift who went to Lilliput. At that moment I wanted to read Defoe’s book. In that moment, if I owned a Kindle I could have downloaded it.

Do I really need such immediate gratification? Can’t I wait for the library to open? Here’s the problem, we’ve become so used to getting what we want, when we want it that we’ve become demanding. It’s a kind of narcissism; gimme, gimme.

When I’m taking a trip I carry more than one book. I come prepared. I’m not going to change my mind in the check-in line at the airport. I pick up a book when I walk out the door in the morning, deciding what kind of book might work for waiting in line, or for an appointment. It’s not a lengthy or complicated process. I have a stash of real books that could keep me reading for at least a full month, round the clock. At a minimum.

So, the money I save by not buying a Kindle can be used on paper and cloth books, ones I can hold in my hand, save on the bookshelf and pass on to my children or donate to a bookfair. Or I could buy a new pair of shoes. Ya know, some sexy black boots for motorcycle riding!

A Romantic Christmas Vision - Papryus & Glue?

I started the week out with toys, so…, I decided that it would be very fitting if I ended this

I started the week out with toys, so…, I decided that it would be very fitting if I ended this week with games. Chess. Or maybe checkers. My biggest problem was that although I knew I wanted to put some sort of game on this blog for Creative Christmas Gift Idea # 29, I really didn’t know what, how, or anything in between.

But when I think of Christmas, I have romantic visions of a roaring fire in a grand fireplace with a beautiful chess board set up to play right in front of the fire. I really don’t know why I have this vision… the reality is that I have no such fireplace, and even if I did, I can’t play chess. But still, I have the vision, so…

I made a chess board (or I suppose it could be a checkers board if you use different pieces).

Now, if you have read Daylilies newsletter for December, you will know that in addition to offering a Creative Christmas Gift Idea every day from now until Christmas, I am also trying to make them 2 hour-or-less ideas from here on in (so you still have plenty of time to try a little creativity this holiday season). Which means, that this chess board had to be creative, quick, easy, and most of all… gorgeous.

The answer? Papyrus.

Not what you were expecting? I grabbed 2 sheets of 12×12″ scrapbooker’s cardboard (sorry – I don’t know what it is called), some glue, a ruler, pencil, pair of scissors and 2- 8×12″ sheets of papyrus (2 different kinds). I measured off my design on one of the cardboard sheets, and then cut out on all the lines. Using the resulting cardboard shapes as pattern pieces, I cut out the papyrus accordingly. Then, I glued the cut papyrus onto its matching pattern pieces, and then glued the pattern pieces back together (like a puzzle) onto the remaining 12×12″ sheet of cardboard. (Okay, I admit. This wasn’t a 2 hour project. It is more like a 4 hour project, but because most of it is cutting and gluing, a second pair of hands would have made this chess board a lot faster. So I am going to say that this is a spend-time-together project. 4 hands can do this project in 2 hours (plus the time it takes to let the glue dry.)

As far as finishing the chess board, I can’t decide between a matte or glossy varnish, or whether I should just put the whole board into one of those photo frames where the image is sandwiched between two panes of glass (do you know the ones I mean?) – I think that the frame would look great sitting on the coffee table, and it would protect the papyrus, but then again, the varnish would be good too. I think either way this board is finished, it will look amazing. (It already does!)

For more detailed information on how I did this, and for an update on how I finished this gameboard, the instructions will be posted on the Daylilies site by December 7th, 2009. If you want detailed instructions sooner, email me and I will be glad to get them to you.

My friend Karin dragged me through the mall: I am not a shopper. It takes too much time and I don’t like it when sales clerks try to sell me stuff. I thought.

Not only was the NEW mall Karin pulled me into just lovely (Northridge Mall), they have a great Papyrus store there with finds that rival even the savviest of online shoppers. I picked up a few cards and at the cash register, the clerk asked me if I had seen their Waterford crystal vases. She proceeded to entice me with their beauty (yes), easy gift giving (yes), made in China? (No! Poland!) … but what really got me was the price for this 9″ tall vase.It comes in a beautiful box that I can wrap straight away.

Waterford. Crystal. How much? Made in Poland? All I have to do is join the free Card Club or something like that. Ok, I bit. How much? REGULARLY $69. SALE? $13.99.

Really? Really. $13.99. The list of people I need to buy for; Hubby’s nurse, the mail lady, pool guy, teachers, hair dresser.. well… it is healthy.

I bought 20.

Oppholdet i turistbyen Hurghada forløp bra.

Sketching on the train as a regular commuter is one of the great urban pleasures. What I enjoy most

Sketching on the train as a regular commuter is one of the great urban pleasures. What I enjoy most are the constant variety of faces and personalities, with familiar ones emerging over time; the near-constant movement of both people and the train itself making consistent balance impossible and you always drawing fast; and how it seems to open the door to conversation. I’ve talked to more people in the past month on the train than I have in a year. Also, I’ve given away two sketches to their subjects, which tickles me no end.

This gentleman moved around a fair amount and always resettled into a predictable position.

This lady was absorbed by her book and read quietly for the whole ride. Her ear is much more shapely than I managed.

Notebooks!

While rearranging the studio to make space for working with clay, I’ve had to clean out the disarray. This has led to finding all kinds of things, including a set of blank notebooks, done to test bindings and materials.

This one’s had a hard traveling life. Interestingly, the binding seemed to wear and crack all at once. After two weeks of use, the binding had deteriorated noticeably but after about eight months of use, there has been little more.

Another papyrus notebook. By this time I made this one, I’d noticed both light and dark types worked better with thin pamphlet-style bindings. This example has been used nearly as much as the one above, but has sustained much less damage due to its lesser bulk.

But what about Herakles?

Yes, the big project. Working with clay as the basis for the page is proving troublesome in several key areas: scribing, sealing, storage, simultaneous display, to name a few. I have a few more ideas I’m working through before moving on, and hope to have those done in the next few days.

Oh Lord we knew this was coming. 2 groups that are organized to help prevent suicide, teen suicide and depression are livid and disgusted at the lyrics from the new cd from Platinum recording artist Rihanna. Rihanna’s new song ‘Russian Roulette” has been called out by the organizations S.A.V.E and PAPYRUS a uk organization against teen suicides.. ” we had to sit there and watch tv with our kids and watch lady Gaga Romancing and glorifying suicide at the V.M.A’s now this? said a member from S.A.V.E we will not stop until we get this song removed from the air” We are disgusted ad extremly dissapointed at this young lady” she said

of course this comes only 9 days after several websites and more publicized a singer /songwriter by the name of Tiffany Evans came out and called Rihanna “satanic” after hearing the song and lyrics.. I am hearing that the next move from jay-z is he is considering removing “Russian Roulette” from Rihanna’s cd (that is no longer called Rated R) hmmm and is now called “the wait is over” i think that is step one.Jay-z doesn’t want anymore negativity surrounding Rihanna she already has enough.. Don’t be suprised that 1 the cd gets pushed back again closer to christmas ad 2 Russian Roulette is removed from this cd… You tube has already started removing Rihanna’s song and lyrics from certain users

Faatimah the daughter of the Messenger of Allaah was washing the blood off while ‘Ali was pouring water on her hands with his shield. When Faatimah realized that the bleeding did not stop, she took a burned mat (of palm leaves) and inserted the ash in the wound of Allaah’s Messenger and the bleeding stopped.”

The ashes of burnt palm leaves are very effective in stopping bleeding, because it is a strong drying agent and because it has the least

papyrus

burning effect (on the exposed skin). Other strong drying remedies have a burning effect on the skin and cause the blood to be irritated and the bleeding to intensify. Further, when the ashes of palm leaves are applied alone or mixed with vinegar in a bleeding nose, it will stop the bleeding.

The author of Al-Qanoon said: “Al-Bardi (papyrus) is effective in stopping bleeding and coating exposed flesh when it is placed on a wound. In old Egypt, paper was made of the Bardi which had a cold, dry condition. Bardi ash is effective in treating oral fungus and infection, hemoptysis (spitting up blood) and also prevents malignant infections from spreading.”

The Prophet’s guidance using honey, cupping and cauterizing as remedies

The Prophet said: “There is cure in three substances, a drink of honey, a slash with a knife used for cupping and cauterizing by fire. I forbid my Nation from cauterizing by fire.” [Al-Bukhaari]

Abu ‘Abdullaah Al-Maziri said plethoric (excessive substances) conditions are either sanguineous (bloody), bilious, phlegmy, or melancholic. Curing sanguineous plethora entails extracting the blood. If plethora was from the other three types, its cure is in softening the stool as warranted for each disease. The Prophet has indicated that honey is used as a laxative and that cupping is used to extract [septic] blood. Some people said that when the slash by a cupping knife does not work, the last resort is branding by fire (cauterizing). The Prophet mentioned branding by fire as a last resort when the body has a strong resistance against medicine, rendering it ineffective. The Prophet then said: “I forbid my nation from branding by fire (cauterizing),” and in another narration: “I do not like to be branded by fire.”

Cauterizing by fire should be the last resort and only used when warranted. The fire should not be the first choice because of the intense pain it causes and which will be used to remove a lesser pain!

Some doctors said that diseases related to the temperament are either material or non-material. The material types are either cold, hot, wet or dry or a combination of these conditions. The four conditions, hotness and coldness are effected, while the other two, wetness and dryness, are usually affected. When one of the two effective temperaments is stronger than the other, it is usually accompanied by one of the affected temperaments. Every type of temperament in the body has two parts, effective and affected.

Temperamental ailments are usually caused by whichever effective condition is stronger, hotness or coldness. The Prophet’s statement directs us to the origin of ailments, hotness and coldness. If the ailment was hot, the cure entails extracting the blood by cupping or puncturing the veins, both of which help extract the septic matter, cooling the temperament. If the ailment iscold, we treat it with heat, such as by taking honey. If we also need to extract the cold material that has caused the ailment, honey also helps in this case because it leads the various substances to maturity along with its other qualities of cleansing, softening, soothing and purging the affected organs. In this case, the septic material will be gently extracted while saving the body the annoyance of using strong laxatives.

Physical ailments are either acute, not needing cauterization because they would soon be neutralized, or chronic ailments, for which cauterizing the proper organ is the best remedy after extracting the septic substances. Chronic diseases usually result from thick, cold septic substances residing in the affected organ, ailing it, spoiling its constitution and, thereby, inflaming the parts of the body that are directly connected to the affected organ. Therefore, cauterizing should be used to dissipate and extract the septic substances in the affected organ with fire

The narration explains treatments for all types of physical ailments, just as we learned the treatment method for all simple ailments (accompanied by fever) from the narration: “The heat of the fever is a breath of the Hell Fire: cool it with water.”

I like to think of myself as very modern but in a lot of ways I also have some very old fashioned tendencies. One of those being “letter” writing. I love taking the time to sit down and write someone a brief note on my stationery or a send a card with a message written inside. I think it makes things very personal and thoughtful. I was watching “Mad Men” Sunday and the advertising team was trying to come up with an ad for telegrams and the concept was a phone call disappears when we hang up but a telegram can be framed and lasts forever. I think that holds true with any written correspondence. It’s a way that I keep memories and I know that I have letters, cards and notes from family members that are very significant to me from as far back as my 1st birthday. It also lets me send words of encouragement to my niece and nephews when they least expect it to show I love them. It’s one thing for me to say I’m proud of you it’s another to see it written. Also being in a LDR it adds something different to the mix- emailing, calling and texting gets kind of old but receiving a card or letter from someone you care for makes you feel special. So with all that said I thouhgt I’d share some of my favorite places to buy stationery and some of my favorite things from there.

Crane’s- To me this is just beautiful and classic correspondence material. I love the simplicity of a notecard with my initial(s) on it.

Paper Source- This store is the bain of my existence I can’t go in there without spending at least $20. It’s a great resource though and I’ve made everything from wedding invitations for my side gig to simple notecards with things from this store.

Papyrus- I love their cards and because Target sells them now they are even more accesible to the general public. I’ve given people cards from papyrus that they have a ctually framed because they are simply so beautiful.

Etsy- I’m addicted to this site in general and there are sooo many talented people on there that make beautiful stationery and notecards that I’d do an injustice to just name one. But I’ve got some amazing things from them including some gorgeous business cards (with my favorite damask print) and address labels to mail out on my correspondence.

Target – Also a really reasonable resource that everyone loves. They also have a variety of brands including some great designers like Erin Condren

Many of the important things of my life are intangible: That is, they’re digital.

Thousands of family pictures never made it to the printing kiosk at Wal-Mart, but they’re stored neatly on my hard drive.

The blog entries I’ve painstakingly written on topics like my menial job, to current events and bus rides are kept within WordPress’ servers.

Much of the contact I have with my friends and family is electronic, saved on my Facebook page.

The music I listen to is kept on a small, plastic device protected by a shealth of rubber, accessible through some wires and a plug.

Although I can interact with these things on a faily consistent basis (provided that Wi-Fi is as plentiful as air), they wouldn’t do me much good on a deserted island or even during a power outage. This increasing level of disconnect from meaningful things has spread to my most treasured possession: Knowledge.

I’ll never own an E-Reader. No Kindle, no Papyrus, no Sony Reader, no sir–not for me.

I like being able to feel the pages beneath my fingers and underline with a regular yellow pencil (none of this “stylus” with a rubber tip and pixelated drawing lines). I take comfort in knowing that my book can soak up a few drops of my morning coffee and shield my head in a brief dash through rain. I’m more financially (and environmentally) responsible for spending $3 on a used copy of Republic than for hundreds on a fragile, technologically advanced gadget.

And I like being able to impress guests by lining my shelves with difficult-looking books.

Hi all, some exciting news! I was approached by Papyrus Inc to be part of their featured photographer event promotion they are having in their NYC stores. Each store features a local photographer and they are sponsering a raffle to win a portrait session with me. It’s a 300 dollar value! The particular store featuring my work is at 74th Street and 3rd Ave on the upper east side. I stopped by today to check out the displays, and I was uber excited to see the entry box super full with raffle tickets!! The drawing takes place at the end of the month so you still have some time to enter!

BTW, here is one of the pictures I have for display at the store, from Liz an Dwayne’s engagement session. I was so enamored with their session even though it was taken only days before I had to submit my pictures that I had this one rush printed because I loved it that much!

google image

L’idée d’un blogue me plait… modérément.
