Hey, guys! It’s David Archuleta here. I’m here in the grand, wonderful Central Park in Manhattan. I just kind of wanted to take you guys on a kind of like a brief “tour” of the album of all the songs on “The Other Side of Down” and just kind of the background on each of them and how they came about. So, I hope you guys enjoy!

“Parachutes and Airplanes” is one of those fun songs that I wrote about. I didn’t really want it to make a whole lot of sense. It still has a meaning in it but the way it describes what’s happening is very abstract. You’re like a ballerina dancing on a wire and I feel like I’m on a trampoline. The world’s a thousand shades of blue. It’s like we’re in a kaleidoscope. I wanted to describe this kind of surreal moment in your life, being with someone and just how it’s like “Wow, this is crazy. It feels crazy right now.” I wanted people’s minds to start working and get thinking, having these crazy images in their head. Because sometimes I think it’s cool for people to use their imagination, use their brains, and that was kind of what the purpose of this song was. It’s one that I just love to kind of move to and it’s just one of those light, kind of fun songs.

“Look Around” was a song I did with Matt Squire and Lady V. She’s so funny. It was also one of the earlier songs that we did. It was a song that Matt played the track and it was just a really cool sounding song. I loved the Imogen Heap kind of vibe that it had. They knew that I liked Imogen Heap and stuff. Of course, it’s a lot more pop than Imogen because she does her thing. I wanted to talk again about just appreciating what you have instead of people getting that one-track kind of mindset where it’s like “Oh, I just need to do this and keep going here, and I’m not happy until I get to that point, and I just have to keep focusing on this.” There are so many things in life that you really can enjoy and appreciate. Instead of just focusing on if I’m not over here then I’m not going to be happy. It’s like “Well, look at what you have now. Look at the things around you.” You can blind yourself if you’re just going to be focusing why you should be unhappy instead of look at what you have. You have your family here. You have so many good things. You’re blessed. You have a house and food. You get to choose where you eat. Some people don’t even know when they’re going to eat next or if they’ll get the chance, get clean water and stuff like that. When you close your eyes to see the view you miss everything surrounding you. It’s kind of like if you just take the time to just breathe and think about “Hey, I do have a good life and there’s so many things I can do with it. Not just for myself but to do good for other people, too.” That’s what it’s about. Stop and just look around.
