Parlando con i clienti in negozio mi rendo conto ogni giorno di più di quanto la gente sia male informata riguardo al parco software a disposizione per ogni tipo di piattaforma, sia essa Linux, Windows o Mac OS. In particolar modo molti mi domandano se nel tal computer è già presente Office o se devono acquistarlo a parte, se c’è “il Norton” già installato e dubbi vari di designer e ingegneri riguardo al passaggio a Mac vista la mancanza di una versione di AutoCad compatibile con i computer Apple. Su quest’ultimo argomento ci terrei a precisare una cosa: è vero, Autodesk si ostina (inspiegabilmente e paradossalmente) a non produrre una versione di Cad nativa per Mac OS, rendendo di fatto necessaria l’installazione tramite Boot Camp, Parallels o VMWare Fusion di una copia di Windows. Proprio da questo problema partirò per spiegare meglio il titolo del post: non esiste solo AutoCad. Come non esiste solo Office e neanche soltanto Norton. Ci sono invece moltissime alternative ai programmi più noti, magari meno pubblicizzati ma aventi le stesse funzioni e potenzialità. Riguardo alla modellazione 3D ecco quindi VectorWorks e ArchiCad, al posto di Office si può usare OpenOffice (per tutti i sistemi operativi e pure gratis), e per l’antivirus ci sono pure AVG, Avast! e Kaspersky. Ovviamente tutti sono liberissimi di scegliersi il software che vogliono, ma troppo spesso ho visto persone preferire un computer ad un altro (migliore) perchè spaventati dal dover “per forza” spendere quasi 200 euro per le licenze che nessun produttore di pc regala mai. Quindi spendo meno per il computer e con quello che rimane mi compro Office. Quando faccio notare che esistono (valide) alternative, molti non vogliono neanche provare ad usare qualcosa di diverso, perchè ormai Word lo conoscono e il Norton “è pesante però è il migliore”. Non inizierò una discussione su cosa è meglio e cosa è peggio, non è questo il tema. Ma se tutti provassimo ad aprire gli occhi senza aver timore del “mondo dei software nascosti” e meno conosciuti, senza dubbio staremmo, almeno dal punto di vista della produttività, molto ma molto meglio.

Mentre aspetto il lettore del MB mi godo kubuntu in virtualizzazione, grazie alla versione di prova di Parallels 5.
In virtualizzazione si riscontrano alcuni problemi che altrimenti non ci sarebbero, come ad esempio la mappatura sbagliata della tastiera italiana del iMac: la punteggiatura non corrisponde e la lettera M è spostata sulla fine della riga superiore, alquanto fastidioso.
Per risolvere il problema, apriamo le impostazioni di sistema, sotto lingua e paese>mappatura della tastiera, selezioniamo l’italiano, e alla voce modello della tastiera scegliamo dal menù a tendina Logitech tastiera generica.

Resulta que si pones cualquiera de las dos (VMware 3 o Parallels 5) en pantalla completa, les dices que usen ambas pantallas (tengo 2), abres visual studio, cargas tu solución y dices: bien, ahora que tengo dos pantallas voy a mover las paletas a la segunda, para tener más espacio con el código.

Acomodas todas las paletas, eres feliz y de pronto shift-F5 (debug)… unos segundos después… boom.-

Ocurre en VMware y en Parallels. ¿Podremos usar alguna vez esta funcionalidad multimonitor? Desde las versiones 1.0 que la vengo esperando…

Hola a todos/as otras vez!

En el post anterior estuvimos hablando sobre virtualización y sobre una solución a nivel de escritorio Open Source como VirtualBox.

En el apartado anterior vimos el apartado de Instalación y puesta a punto. Ahora empezaremos por descubrir e interactuar con las diferentes configuraciones disponibles que podemos realizar.

Configurando VirtualBox

Para entrar en el apartado de configuración, en la pantalla principal le damos a configuración y ya nos saldrá la primera pantalla,

Aquí podemos ver varias cosas:

En la primera pestaña, Básico

1. Nombre: Aquí podemos poner el nombre de la máquina virtual.
2. Sistema Operativo: Aquí si es Windows, Linux FreeBSD.
3. Versión: Dentro de cada uno de los sistemas las diferentes ramas, Ej: si es Windows si es un profesional, si es un home edition…

Cambiamos de pestaña,

En la segunda pestaña, Avanzado

1. Carpeta instantáneas( Snapshots): Aquí ponemos la ruta de donde se guardarán los Snapshots ( Copias de Seguridad)
2. Compartir porta papeles: Aquí podemos ver como podemos configurar el porta papeles. sólo en la máquina virtual, sólo de la máquina virtual al equipo o Bidireccional
3. Medios extraíbles: Por si queremos recordar los cambios
4. Mostrar barra-herramientas: Opciones de a pantalla completa o no.

En la pestaña de al lado en descripción podemos poner una descripción de la máquina virtual en sí.

Ahora bajamos la a la pestaña de sistema

Aquí podríamos modificar la RAM que le hemos asignado al equipo.

Abajo había el orden de arranque, por si queremos cambiarlo.

Y, también podemos habilitar ACPI

Ahora nos movemos a la pestaña de procesador

Aquí podemos asignarle mas procesadores a la máquina virtual, cambiamos a la pestaña de aceleración

Aquí podemos habilitar estas dos opciones,

1. La primera habilitar VT-X o amd-x: Esta opción sólo la hemos de habilitar si nuestro procesador tiene aceleración por VT o AMD-T
2. Habilitar paginación anidada: Esta opción es para aquellas máquinas virtuales que tienen mas de 500 de RAM

Ahora nos vamos a pantalla

Aquí establecemos la memoria RAm que le queremos asignar a la memoria de  vídeo.

Además podemos habilitar la aceleración 3D.

Ahora nos movemos hasta la otra pestaña Pantalla remota

Aquí podemos configurar nuestra máquina virtual para que podamos acceder a ella mediante acceso remoto.

Ahora nos vamos a discos duros.

Aquí podemos especificar el tipo de IDE que llevará el disco duro de la máquina virtual.

Podemos agregar los discos duros que queramos aquí.

Ahora nos vamos a la Unidad de CD-ROM

En la Unidad de CD-ROM podemos habilitar una unidad virtual, al igual que en un pc físico y, además podemos montar una imagen en formato ISO. Marcamos Archivo de Imagen ISO y le damos a añadir, nos saldrá el asistente de imágenes.

Ahora si le damos a agregar podemos agregar una imagen ISO para hacer la instalación de lo que necesitemos.

Seleccionamos la imágen aceptamos y nos vamos ahora a la parte de Disquete.

En mi opinión no le veo ninguna utilidad

Pasamos a audio

Podemos cambiar el controlador de audio si lo vemos conveniente..

Sigamos hasta RED

Podemos elegir el tipo de adaptador, escogemos el que necesitamos.

Pasemos a ver la segunda imágen.

Aquí es donde la gente tiene más problemas la gente en el apartado de red.

Daremos un repaso a la configuración de red de virtualBox.

NAT

Una máquina virtual con NAT activado actúa como un verdadero ordenador que se conecta a Internet a través de un router.  El “router”, en este caso, es el motor de la creación de redes de VirtualBox, que mapas de tráfico desde y hacia la máquina virtual de forma transparente.  La desventaja de modo NAT es que, al igual que una red privada detrás de un router, la máquina virtual es invisible e inaccesible desde el exterior de Internet, no se puede ejecutar un servidor de esta manera a menos que configure el reenvío de puertos

Si escogemos NAT recibiremos este direccionamiento:

La máquina virtual recibe su dirección de red y la configuración de la red privada de un servidor DHCP integrado en VirtualBox. La dirección IP asignados de esta manera a la máquina virtual es por lo general en una red completamente diferente a la de acogida.  En más de una tarjeta de una máquina virtual puede ser configurado para usar NAT, la primera tarjeta está conectado a la red privada 10.0.2.0, la segunda tarjeta a la red 10.0.3.0 y así sucesivamente

Si queremos cambiar este direccionamiento..

En el modo NAT, la interfaz de red invitado se le asigna a la gama de IPv4 10.0.x.0/24 por defecto donde x corresponde a la instancia de la interfaz NAT 2 de dicha máquina virtual.  Por lo tanto x es de 2 si sólo hay una instancia activa NAT.  En ese caso, el invitado se le asigna a la dirección 10.0.2.15 la puerta de entrada se establece en 10.0.2.2 y el servidor de nombres se puede encontrar en 10.0.2.3Si, por cualquier razón, la red de NAT debe ser cambiado, esto puede lograrse con el siguiente comando:

 VBoxManage modifyvm "My VM" --natnet1 "192.168/16" Modifyvm VBoxManage "Mi VM" - natnet1 "192.168/16"

Este comando se reserva las direcciones de red 192.168.0.0 ... 192.168.254.254 192.168.0.0 ... 192.168.254.254 para la instancia de NAT primera red de “Mi VM”. Los resultados de propiedad intelectual serían asignados a 192.168.0.15 y la puerta de enlace por defecto se encuentra en 192.168.0.2

Adaptador Puente

Aquí la configuración funciona de la siguiente manera:

Con la creación de redes de puente, VirtualBox utiliza un controlador de dispositivo en su sistema de acogida que los filtros de los datos de su adaptador de red física. Este controlador está llamado un “filtro de red” del conductor. VirtualBox Esto permite interceptar los datos de la red física y la inyección de datos en ella, creando así una nueva interfaz de red en el software. Cuando un huésped está utilizando como una interfaz de software nuevo, parece que el sistema host como si los resultados eran físicamente conectado a la interfaz con un cable de red: el host puede enviar datos al usuario a través de la interfaz y recibir datos de ella. Esto significa que usted puede configurar el enrutamiento o puente entre el cliente y el resto de su red.

Adaptador puente en VirtualBox

Red Interna

Tenemos una parte muy buena en VirtualBox para configurar nuestra Red Interna

La red interna es similar a la creación de redes de puente en que la máquina virtual se puede comunicar directamente con el mundo exterior.  Sin embargo, el “mundo exterior” se limita a otras máquinas virtuales que se conectan a la red interna mismo.A pesar de que técnicamente, todo lo que se puede hacer utilizando redes internas también se puede hacer utilizando redes de puente, hay dos buenas razones para que se aplicó este modo adicional:

1. De Seguridad. En el modo de puente de red, todo el tráfico pasa a través de una interfaz física del sistema de acogida. Por tanto, es posible adjuntar un analizador de paquetes (tales como Ethereal) para la interfaz de host y registrar todo el tráfico que pasa sobre ella. Si, por cualquier razón, usted prefiere dos o más máquinas virtuales en la misma máquina de comunicación privada, ocultando sus datos del sistema tanto para el host y el usuario, creación de redes de puente por lo tanto no es una opción.
2. Velocidad de conexión en red interna es más eficiente que la creación de redes de puente, como VirtualBox puede transmitir directamente los datos sin tener que enviar a través del sistema operativo host de pila.

Cada red interna se identifica simplemente por su nombre.  Una vez que se activa más de una tarjeta de red virtual con el mismo identificador de red interna, el piloto de apoyo VirtualBox automáticamente “por cable” las cartas y actuar como un conmutador de red. El piloto de apoyo VirtualBox implementa un conmutador Ethernet completa y soporta tanto de difusión / tramas de multidifusión y el modo promiscuo.

Con el fin de adjuntar una tarjeta de red VM a una red interna, establecer su modo de red de “red interna”. There are two ways to accomplish this: Hay dos maneras de lograrlo:

• Podemos utilizar “una máquina virtual de Configuración” de diálogo de la interfaz gráfica de usuario de VirtualBox. En el “Networking” categoría de los valores de diálogo, seleccione “red interna” de la lista desplegable de los modos de creación de redes. Ahora seleccione el nombre de una red interna existente en el siguiente menú desplegable o introducir un nuevo nombre en el campo de entrada.
• Usted puede utilizar VBoxManage modifyvm <VM name> --nic<x> intnet Opcionalmente, puede especificar un nombre de red con el comando VBoxManage modifyvm <VM name> --intnet<x> <network name> Si no se especifica un nombre de red, la tarjeta de red se adjunta a la intnet de red por defecto.

A menos que configure la red (virtual) en las tarjetas de los sistemas operativos invitados que participan en la red interna para utilizar direcciones IP estáticas, es posible que desee utilizar el servidor DHCP que se construye en VirtualBox para administrar direcciones IP para la red interna. Más información en la sección llamada “dhcpserver VBoxManage”

Como medida de seguridad, la implementación de Linux de la red interna sólo permite máquinas virtuales se ejecutan bajo el mismo identificador de usuario para establecer una red interna.

Host Only

La última configuración disponible en VirtualBox

Host-only es otro modo de red que se agregó con la versión 2.2 de VirtualBox. Puede ser pensado como un híbrido entre el puente y los modos de creación de redes internas: como en el puente de red, las máquinas virtuales pueden hablar unos con otros y el anfitrión como si estuvieran conectados a través de un conmutador Ethernet física. Asimismo, como en la creación de redes internas sin embargo, una interfaz de red física no necesita estar presente, y las máquinas virtuales no se puede hablar al mundo fuera del huésped, ya que no están conectadas a una interfaz de red física.En cambio, cuando el host se utiliza sólo la creación de redes, VirtualBox se crea una interfaz de software nuevo en la máquina que luego aparece al lado de sus interfaces de red existentes. En otras palabras, mientras que con la creación de redes de puente de una interfaz física existente se utiliza para conectar máquinas virtuales, con la creación de redes de acogida de sólo un nuevo “bucle” interfaz se crea en el equipo. Y mientras que con la creación de redes internas, el tráfico entre las máquinas virtuales no pueden se ve, el tráfico en bucle la “interfaz” en el host puede ser interceptado.

Host-only la creación de redes es especialmente útil para los dispositivos virtuales preconfigurados, en múltiples máquinas virtuales que se envían entre sí y destinadas a cooperar.  Por ejemplo, una máquina virtual puede contener un servidor web y una segunda base de datos, y ya que se destinan a hablar unos con otros, el aparato puede encargar VirtualBox para crear un host de red sólo para los dos. Un segundo (puente) de la red entonces conectar con el servidor web para el mundo exterior para servir a los datos, pero el mundo exterior no puede conectarse a la base de datos.

Para cambiar la interfaz de red virtual de una máquina virtual de “acogida sólo” modo:

• O bien ir a la página de “red” en el cuaderno de la máquina virtual la configuración de la interfaz gráfica de usuario y seleccione “Host-sólo la creación de redes”, o
• En la línea de comandos, VBoxManage modifyvm <VM name> --nic<x> hostonly tipo VBoxManage modifyvm <VM name> --nic<x> hostonly más información en  la sección llamada “modifyvm VBoxManage”

Para la creación de redes de acogida sólo, como con la creación de redes internas, puede encontrar el servidor DHCP de utilidad que se construye en VirtualBox. Esto puede ser activado para luego administrar las direcciones IP en el host de red sólo porque de lo contrario se tendrían que configurar todas las direcciones IP estática.

Como podéis ver es una instalación normal y corriente sobre Xp.

Las adiciones de huéspedes ofrecen las siguientes características:

La integración puntero del ratón

Para superar las limitaciones de la ayuda del ratón que se describen en la sección llamada “captura y liberación del teclado y el ratón”, este le proporciona la ayuda del ratón sin problemas.  Usted sólo tendrá un puntero de ratón y pulsar la tecla de host ya no es necesario para “liberar” el ratón de ser capturado por el sistema operativo huésped. Para hacer este trabajo, un controlador de ratón especial se instala en el cliente que se comunica con el “conductor real” del ratón en el host y se mueve el puntero del ratón resultados en consecuencia.

Mejor soporte de vídeo

Si bien la tarjeta de gráficos virtual que emula VirtualBox para cualquier sistema operativo invitado proporciona todas las características de base, los controladores personalizados de video que se instalan con las adiciones Posadas ofrecerle muy alta y el uso de modos de vídeo estándar, así como el rendimiento de vídeo acelerada.

Además, con Windows y Linux recientes, Solaris y OpenSolaris personas, si están instalados los complementos de vistas, usted puede cambiar el tamaño de la ventana de la máquina virtual, y la resolución de vídeo en los resultados se ajustarán automáticamente (como si se hubiera introducido manualmente una resolución arbitraria en la configuración de pantalla de los huéspedes).

Para Linux y los clientes de Solaris, la versión del servidor Xorg 1.3 o posterior es necesario para el cambio de tamaño automático (el que se ha inhabilitado en Fedora 9 huéspedes debido a un error en el servidor X que la oferta).  La versión del servidor se puede comprobar con Xorg -version

FPor último, si están instalados los complementos de visitas, los gráficos 3D para aplicaciones de resultados puede ser acelerada,más información en la sección denominada “aceleración 3D por hardware (OpenGL y DirectX 8 / 9)”.

Sincronización de tiempo

Con las adiciones Guest instalado, VirtualBox puede asegurar que la hora del sistema del huésped es mejor sincronizados.  Esto soluciona el problema de que un sistema operativo normalmente espera que el 100% del tiempo de una computadora por sí misma, sin interferencias, que ya no es el caso cuando su VM se ejecuta en conjunto con el sistema operativo anfitrión y, posiblemente, otras aplicaciones en el host. Como resultado, el calendario de su sistema operativo invitado pronto será significativamente. Las adiciones Posadas volverá a sincronizar la hora con regularidad.

Las carpetas compartidas

Estas proporcionan una manera fácil de intercambio de archivos entre el host y el huésped.  Al igual que las acciones ordinarias de la red Windows, usted puede decir VirtualBox para el tratamiento de un directorio de acogida determinadas como una carpeta compartida, y VirtualBox se pondrá a disposición del sistema operativo invitado como un recurso compartido de red. Ventanas integradas

Con esta característica, las ventanas individuales que se muestran en el escritorio de la máquina virtual se pueden asignar en el escritorio de la máquina, como si la aplicación que se ejecutan realmente en el de acogida. Más información en la sección llamada “Seamless Windows”

Portapapeles compartido

Con Vbox addiotions, el portapapeles del sistema operativo invitado, opcionalmente, se puede compartir con su sistema operativo host,más información en la sección llamada “Configuración general”.

to be honest, it’s bloody confusing. well, okay, not quite… but there’s so much to figure out… i need a good while to get used to this… it doesn’t help that i spent 4 hours in the shop waiting for everything to be installed… before that we brought the CPU to challenger for diagnostics. the mother board is dead. like gone, totally not worth repairing…

so i bought an external hard disk! a 500gb one! which i didn’t manage to bring home cos i’m getting data from my dead PC transferred out…

En la entrada anterior he descrito más o menos las diferencias iniciales entre VMware y Parallels en sus últimas versiones. He estado usando VMware 3.0 con Windows Vista 32bits (2 Cores asignados, 3 GB de RAM). Esa VM ha fue “actualizada” desde VMware 2.06. Comencé a oír “maravillas” del nuevo Parallels 5.0, que salió pocos días después que VMware, de modo que decidí “mirarlo”. El resultado fue bastante satisfactorio, digamos que me sorprendieron varias cosas, ciertas tareas son muy rápidas, la interfaz está bastante más cuidada que en VMware, y en general me pareció un producto muchísimo más completo que VMware. Pero yo ya he comprado el VMware 3.0 y mi licencia de Parallels es 4.0 y el trial de la versión 5 acaba en dos días.

Cuando probé el nuevo Parallels (el cual estuve usando estas últimas dos semanas), lo hice migrando mi VM de VMware a Parallels (el Windows Vista 32 bits), porque allí tenía todo mi entorno Visual Studio 2008, herramientas de SQL Server, etcétera. Esta última semana me llegó el Windows 7 Home Premium (OEM), así que decidí instalarlo de “cero” en Parallels. Lo hice, instalé mi Visual Studio, Service Pack, configuré todo y dejé la máquina limpia y lista para trabajar. Probé de todo, Crystal, Coherence, Full Screen, Screen, Mac Look, etcétera. Todo lo que se os pueda ocurrir que ofrece Parallels (que es mucho más que lo que ofrece VMware). El nivel de conformidad y satisfacción fue bajando conforme pasaron los días. ¿Por qué? Porque si bien pienso que Parallels ofrece más opciones y cosas para tocar, no todas funcionan bien o acaban siendo 100% funcionales. Intentaré explicar brevemente a qué me refiero a lo largo de la entrada, cuando vaya recordando las cosas.

Dada esta pequeña suma de micro-insatisfacciones, decidí que mi VMware no estaba muerto y me dije, ¿por qué no instalar también el Windows 7 en VMware y repetir toda la configuración…?

Y eso hice.

El motivo es que ahora tengo dos VMs “iguales”, instaladas del mismo modo, con todo prácticamente igual y puedo comprar el rendimiento y sobre todo las prestaciones en el día a día con un poco más de precisión.

Hardware y Software
El ordenador en el cual estoy haciendo todo es mi ordenador personal y de trabajo. Tiene OS X Snow Leopard 1.6.2.

Instalación y Preparativo
El proceso que utilicé es completamente extraoficial y no está basado en ningún estricto control de igualdad. El “host” (OS X) tenía varias aplicaciones abiertas, entre ellas: Adium, Mailplane, iTunes, 1Password, varios Menú Items, el Activity Monitor, etcétera. Sin embargo, no quise cerrar nada porque justamente a mi me interesan los benchmarks “reales” y no los que son pruebas de laboratorio. Yo quiero saber como anda mi VM en el día a día.

La instalación fue la misma para ambos. Inserté el DVD de Windows 7 Home Premium. File -> New VM. En ningún caso usé la instalación “Easy”, sino que fui en el modo manual e intenté poner los mismos parámetros para ambas VMs. 3GB RAM, 2 Processors, 60GB Disco, autoexpandible.
Las aplicaciones no están compartidas, ni las carpetas ni nada, salvo la carpeta de “Downloads” de OS X, que está compartida automáticamente y se puede acceder desde las VMs.

Parallels tiene Adaptive Hypervisor, AutoCompress Disks, Tune Windows for Speed, Optimize Performance for Virtual Machine y Power Consumption Better Performance.
VMware no tiene nada de esas opciones, pero tiene Preferred virtualization Engine Automatic y Hard disk buffering automatic. El disco de VMware está dividido en ficheros de 2GB (Split into 2 GB Files), opción que vino por defecto.

La red es Bridged en ambos. Y ambos tienen la misma configuración de red, ip fija, misma puerta de enlace, todo igual.

Cuando acabó el Windows 7 (mas o menos tardaron lo mismo, la verdad es que no me importa el tiempo que tardan en instalar porque no es algo que haga todos los días) ejecuté Windows Update y vinieron unos 40 MB de parches. Tras el reinicio y la configuración de red (Ip fija, cambio de Workgroup, etc), monté la imagen del Visual Studio 2008, lo instalé como viene (sin cambiar opciones). A continuación, el Service Pack de Visual Studio (SP1).
Luego instalé Total Commander (no puedo vivir sin él) y SQL Express 2008 w/advanced services. Luego Service Pack 1 de SQL 2008. Todo instalado, restauré dos bases de datos diferentes (que uso para desarrollo). Configuré el mismo wallpaper y los mismos colores, Aero naturalmente está activo y listo.

Luego me puse a hacer unas pruebas “informales” y a continuación expongo los resultados. En morado los “mejores tiempos” (siempre menos es mejor). Luego hice una segunda pasada y supongo que por motivos de caché y actividad del ordenador Host, algunos resultados variaron. Pero salvo algún caso aislado, los números fueron más o menos similares:

Los valores que no están en el segundo run han sido literalmente iguales a la primera pasada.

Conclusión
A simple vista todo parece indicar que Parallels es, en definitiva, más rápido en la “mayoría” de las cosas que VMware, excepto en abrir la aplicación; no sé por qué Parallels tarda tanto comparado con VMware.

Personalmente lo siento un poco más ágil (lo sentí desde el minuto uno y los números me están mostrando que no estaba tan equivocado). Parallels tiene algunas cosas que no están 100% pulidas. He tenido algún problema con el portapapeles que no funcionaba bien (nada que cerrando y abriendo todo de nuevo no se solucione) pero detalles de ese tipo.

Parallels parece usar un poco más el disco duro, sobre todo en operaciones como suspender una VM. En el gráfico no se ve, pero el Parallels, luego de suspender una VM y cerrar la aplicación, se quedó más de dos minutos escribiendo en el disco duro (según el Activity Monitor, unos 20MB/Seg). Este tiempo uno “no lo ve”, pero en un ordenador como un portátil o con un disco duro más lento esto puede ser realmente muy molesto.

VMware por el contrario sólo escribió a unos 5MB/seg durante unos 20 segundos luego de la misma operación.

¿CON CUAL ME QUEDO?
La primera impresión es saltar e ir a por Parallels; pero no todo es oro tampoco aquí. Hay que tener en cuenta que ni el modo Coherence ó Crystal en Parallels, ni el modo Unity en VMware son cómodos y ágiles para trabajar con Visual Studio. Al hacer Debug, y movernos con paletas, se pierde mucho la gracia de todo el trabajo, se hace más difícil encontrar bien las ventanas y bugs (en ambos) impiden que a veces se pueda encontrar la ventana que se busca, dado que un click en el Dock no siempre restaura como es debido. A eso hay que sumarle mucho flickering.

La solución es usar modo “Pantalla” o “Pantalla Completa”, que por suerte ahora, funciona con dos pantallas, pero el VMware tiene un Bug espléndido que hace que no se pueda trabajar con dos pantallas en modo Pantalla Completa por más de un rato porque se vuelve loco. No le ocurre a todo el mundo, pero ocurre y está en los Foros.

No me pasó lo mismo con Parallels (aunque yo lo uso con una sola pantalla, he probado usando todo) de momento.

Seguiré usando ambos por unos tres días más (que es el tiempo que tiene el Windows 7 de mi VMware para activarse, dado que estoy usando la misma licencia en ambos). Si me quedo en VMware, reactivaré mi Windows allí y no podré trabajar con Parallels (es un coñazo porque hay que llamar por teléfono a Microsoft).

Si el Parallels es tan rápido como parece, entonces quizás me cambie una temporada; lo que es seguro es que seguiré contándoles como me va con ambos. Seguro que en unos meses veremos actualizaciones y allí será donde podremos ver en qué han estado pensando ambos equipos. A ver si oyen a los usuarios (Algo que Parallels tiene fama de no haber hecho en sus comienzos) o si hacen lo que les da la gana.

Para trabajar con una aplicación más simple o quizás algún juego (no he probado nada de eso), habrá que ver otras pruebas y esperar un poco a ver que dice “la gente”. Yo sólo uso el Windows para Visual Studio y si no tuviese que hacerlo, es porque posiblemente me quedé sin trabajo

Se echan en falta algunas opciones en VMware… quizás peca de ser demasiado simple.

En todo caso, tengo tres días para decidirme, seguiré leyendo en Twitter y por ahí, a ver si aparece algún factor decisivo ¡hasta la próxima!

Cuando hablo con la gente y me preguntan sobre los tutoriales realizados en mi web, siempre me hacen las mismas preguntas:

Sin duda son preguntas que tienen una fácil respuesta y es que..desde hace tiempo yo utilizo la virtualización a nivel de escritorio.

Hoy en día hay diversas soluciones en el mercado, tanto gratuítas como de pago. Algunos ejemplo són. Virtualbox, VMware, Parallels.

Aunque…antes de nada definamos que es la virtualización ¿ no ?

Virtualización

Creación de una versión virtual de algo como un sistema operativo, un servidor, un dispositivo de almacenamiento o de recursos de la red. Por ejemplo, la división de un disco duro en diferentes particiones es una división lógica de un disco duro, para crear, en efecto, dos discos duros separados, pero en forma virtual. Es decir, el disco duro físicamente sigue siendo uno, pero actúa como si fuesen dos

Básicamente emular algo que tenemos y poder trabajar en él.

Como comentaba antes hay diferentes opciones el mercado empezaremos por VirtualBox.

VirtualBox

Actuálmente propiedad de Sun Microsystems, dispone de dos paquetes, uno de uso privado para uso personal y otro bajo licencia GPL2.

Como podemos observar dispone de una versión totálmente Open source.

¿ Pero que ventajas tiene usar VirtualBox ?

1. Es gratuíto con todas las funcionalidades del producto.
2. Es multiplataforma, es decir, es compatible con MAC OSX, Linux, Windows y FreeBSD.
3. Permite interactuar con más de una máquina virtual a la vez.
4. Permite montar discos fijos como ISO’s en los Host.

Instalación y configuración de VirtualBox

De una manera muy sencilla explicaremos como utilizar VirtualBox.

Primero nos lo descargamos de la página oficial.

Aparte de la instalación en si además, nos instalará dos interfaces de red, hablaremos de esto más adelante.

Si iniciamos el programa de VirtualBox nos encontraremos con esta pantalla:

Es una interfaz amigable, bastante intuitiva. Empecemos a trabajar un poco.

Creación de la máquina virtual

Si pulsamos encima de nueva nos saldrá el asistente para la creación de una nueva máquina virtual.

Veamos,

El asistente de la creación de la máquina virtual, la primera pantalla no tiene misterio pulsamos en siguiente,

Aquí deberemos escoger el nombre de la nueva mñaquina virtual y, aparte que sistema virtual queremos instalar.

En mi caso he escogido Windows XP, aunque también puedes escoger Linux o FreeBSD.

Continuemos,

Aquí le asignaremos la memoria RAM a la máquina virtual. Seamos razonables en asignar la memoria RAM ya que, si le asignamos más de la mitad de nuestra RAM física a la máquina virtual es posible que el rendimiento del equipo se vea afectado por ello. En mi caso con 256 ya voy más que sobrado.

Continuemos,

Esta es la parte de la creación del disco duro, como no tenemos ninguno crearemos un disco duro virtual nuevo.

Ahora nos lanzará el asistente para la creación de un disco duro virtual nuevo,

Pulsamos en siguiente y continuamos hacia adelante.

Esta parte es muy importante ya que, podemos definir el disco de dos maneras.

Expansión dinámica: Esta configuración le otorga al disco duro la capacidad de poder ir creciendo dinámica mente. Es la opción recomendada si no has utilizado nunca VirtualBox.

Tamaño Fijo: En esta opción si establecemos que el disco duro tendrá un tamaño de 10GB cuando llegue a 10 GB se acabo, no podremos guardar nada. Una vez escogida esta opción no se podrá modificar el tamaño escogido.

Aquí podremos poner el tamaño del disco duro y, además la ruta donde guardaremos el disco duro virtual.

En mi caso yo he escogido 5 GB.

Kitsuné is probably one of the sickest labels around. From music to clothing to design, they’ve got a number of things on lock. I’ve only been following the label since the 6th compilation, so I might not have the history as some of you, but in my opinion this 8th compilation is the bees mf knees.

The Kitsuné Maison Compilation 8 dropped digitally out in Europe yesterday (November 16) and is now available for everyone else here. The comp offers up a ton of good tunes from the likes of Siriusmo, Midnight Juggernauts, Heartsrevolution, Two Door Cinema Club (amazing new Kitsuné signee), Moulinex, Harvard Bass, Delphic, Memory Tapes, Crystal Fighters, etc etc etc.

As you can probably piece together, this thing is stacked and it would really be a shame to not pick up a copy of the album for yourself. I’ve been trying to figure out which tracks to denote as my “favorites”, but it’s proven difficult, as every song offers up something tasty. However, I can safely say that the new Heartsrevolution, Delphic, Two Door Cinema Club, Logo and My Tiger My Timing tracks are up there on my list.

I got really tired of having to go to the community building where there is a printer with two computers next to it in order print. Half the time I needed to print something, both the computers are being used up and I can’t print until one of them gets off. I’ve seen people watch youtube videos and play farmville. So, when it came to my birthday, I received a decent amount of money from my relatives and decided to buy my own printer! The Canon PIXMA MP560 sounded like the perfect printer for me. It was the cheapest printer I could find that was wireless, simple looking, and had two-sided printing.

What I saw when trying to add my printer... the printer was not listed, but the scanner was.

After receiving this wonderful printer of mine, I found out that my MacBook was not able to detect the printer. The printer was supposed to be detected by my MacBook through bonjour, but the only thing that showed up was the scanner, not the printer. I couldn’t figure it out for the life of me, so I decided to look online.

That is when I ran into a forum post on the Apple Discussion board. This post had someone having trouble trying to connect to their MP560 just like I was. I tried everything the people suggested, but could not get it to work. Pahu, the person who was helping the guy out, was the person who also tried to help me. He suggested that I have CUPS installed from Canons website. I installed it, the printer still wouldn’t show up. He then asked me if I had firewall setup or Parallels installed. Well, I never had my firewall setup, but I do have Parallels installed. Apparently, Parallels has a known problem to block the protocol that some Canon printers try to communicate through to the computer.

My first reaction… I do not want to uninstall Parallels because I bought the program and I use it fairly often for work and school purposes. So, I searched once again and found another forum post. This one suggested that I stop a Parallels service that was running in the background by opening Terminal and typing “sudo launchctl stop com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon” into it, without quotes.

This is what you are supposed to see when adding the MP560 as a printer.

Well what do you know? I opened the “add printer” dialogue again and it showed up after a good 10 seconds. So, when installing the Canon PIXMA MP560 Printer on a Mac, make sure you have CUPS drivers installed, MP560 Mac drivers installed, and parallels service not running by using the sudo command mentioned above (or just not installed period). Also, to print double-sided you will have to select the “duplex printing” option in the printer settings when printing. Took me awhile to figure out, but a quick search of the printers manual helped me solve that problem.

Okay so this is a lot of information, but it’s mainly to help anyone who is having problems with the same printer. As an extra treat I should let you all know that there is an iPhone app that allows you to print photos from your iPhone to the printer, wirelessly. Of course you will have to be connected to the same WiFi as the printer.

Weekly visits to the dojang are my cure-all when I’m stressed. Exercise is said to be a great remedy for the blues and I can definitely vouch for that truth. With as hectic an academic life as my own, conflicts often invade my time to be at the dojang. The impact of losing my guaranteed weekly work-out wasted no time revealing itself. I was overpowered. It seemed like stress was going to invade every aspect of my life, slowly take me down from every angle. At the time, it never occurred to me that my stress levels increased because of my lack of routine exercise, but now I realize there are reasons I look forward to my martial arts social hour every Monday night.

My favorite thing about my belt rank coinciding with college graduation is the parallel between sport and life. The idea behind blackbelt is that, after gathering basic knowledge and basic skill, the student must practice and hone those skills as a primary concern, all the while continuing to learn new techniques. The same applies to the graduate: everything’s been acquired and must now be applied towards life in the adult- and working- world.

Tonight, however, was a class centered around board-breaking. I first broke a board at my grading from white to orange belt, so I already know it’s something I can do. I always remember back to that day, though, when faced with board-breaking. Without any prior knowledge, I had to to slam my fist and break a board. In front of the grand master! The thought alone is terrifying for a martial artist newbie. I wasn’t stranded in the unknown, however. My sensei talked me through the process.

Two important elements are what make board-breaking easier than it looks: focus and breathing. Little did I know back then that I’d later discover how well those two elements work in other aspects of my life as well, particularly when juggling plates of tasks that need to get done before a certain deadline. Take five minutes the next time you’re stressed to close your eyes and focus on nothing else but your breathing. After several deep breaths, you’ll feel yourself calm down. Even cooler, you’ll realize that you’re ability to concentrate has increased.

Here are images in order to built my own iconographic references. Alluding to this style and Atmosphere, I tried to create a digital landscape.

“Long distance information, give me Memphis, Tennessee” is sung over what is called a dominant chord; the pull of that chord is eventually resolved by the tonic chord. The tonic represents the key in which Mr. Berry’s tune is written; the tonic is the place at which the harmonic progression is at rest. But in this tune, you spend most of your listening or playing time on the dominant chord; in each of the four 19-bar verses, not until measure 16 do you experience the resolution of the tonic, and this provides a sense of structure (in the first verse, that’s at the word “wall” in the line “and he wrote it on the wall”).

In Hynde’s “My City Was Gone” the harmony alternates between two chords that, by their placement, at first seem to imply a tonic/subdominant relationship, but at some point becomes less definite and can be alternately heard as either dominant or tonic. I don’t think that’s the intention, but there it is, like a visual pattern that confounds your sense of depth perception, allowing it to jump forward in your vision. Even more slippery are some tunes by Stills, whose three-chord harmonies further blur the identity of the tonic (intentionally or not) by emphasizing equally the I-IV-V, tonic-subdominant-dominant chords, which appear in many blues compositions. (These perceptions are subjective, and I realize that not everyone will hear the same things, and translating the effects into text is akin to the dis/connect of synesthesia.) Dave Holland has performed some compositions with his big band that seem to sit on the dominant instead of the tonic, in the manner of flamenco. There’s an ominous sense of suspense.

The initial appeal of jazz, for me, was the sophisticated dialect of the language of harmony that I heard on Thelonious’s “Solo Monk” in a listening booth at Marshal Field and Company, downtown. In addition, Monk occasionally finds a faux tonic and presents it as a satisfying resolution in an “inappropriate” place/juncture, as in the bridge of “Everything Happens To Me.” (What?) Taking that strategy even further, Henry Threadgill has composed pieces in which every chord has the gravitas of the tonic, as though the piece repeatedly modulates to a new key — a version of what Mr. Stills did with three simple triads, although not I-IV-V.

I think there are similar strategies in creative camerawork. Ray K. Metzker and Barbara Crane and Ken Josephson seem to have absorbed Aaron Siskind’s conceit of removing the nominal subject from its real-world context just enough to emphasize that the picture is a new object, made by the artist, not merely recording the world, capable of representing an individual’s sensibility.

I’ve been using Parallels Desktop for the Mac for several years now – in fact, when I originally started using it, VMware were only talking about doing a desktop virtualisation product for the Mac.

That’s partly why I stay loyal to Parallels – they supported the platform sooner. The other reason is that after years of hearing tripe from VMware employees about why you couldn’t mix windows from both operating systems, Parallels went ahead and did it with Coherence. (Yes, VMware Fusion’s Unity functionality went there too, around the same time, but the amount of times I heard it wasn’t a feature they were interested in within Workstation, as an example, drove me nuts.)

So when Parallels Desktop v5 for the Mac came out, I jumped on the upgrade bandwagon. It’s given me one major positive – I can now run Solaris 10 AMD 64-bit on my Mac Pro; that was the one remaining OS I absolutely need to periodically run that I was being blocked from doing previously. After about 3 days of installing, reinstalling, downloading more recent versions of Solaris 10 AMD, I even finally managed to get networking operational within the VM too, which meant it was useful.

Other than that, Parallels v5 has been a bit of a disappointment. You see, currently for me, Coherence mode only works if I’ve got a single monitor attached to my machine. The only time that happens is when I’m using my laptop away from my desk, or when I’m traveling – and those are times I’m less likely to run VMs. Since Coherence doesn’t work for me 99% of the time, that means I can’t really try out the Crystal mode – though I’ll admit, I’m unlikely to use it heavily; I dislike the “shared apps” approach offered by Parallels, and the new Crystal view mode seems to rely heavily on this.

It does continue to annoy me that I don’t have the option of virtually turning the monitor off – why can’t I close the console for a running VM? Surely that’s not so huge a thing that it can only be limited to enterprise class virtualisation – aka ESX, VMware Server or Parallels Server. When you have 10+ VMs running at once, even minimised all those consoles start to get annoying.

While overall I’m pretty happy with Parallels performance in terms of memory and CPU, recent support cases have highlighted to me that when it comes to translated IO, Parallels struggles – it seems to peak at about 20MB/s per VM, regardless of the throughput capabilities of the attached device. I first noticed that under v4, and was unhappy to see no change in v5.

If you’re currently a Parallels Desktop for Mac user, and you haven’t yet upgraded, I’d suggest holding off until the next build of v5, rather than jumping into the initial build released. Hopefully by then they’ll at least have Coherence reliably working again.

I’d like to take back my comments about Parallels 5 still having mediocre IO performance. I just realised, a short while ago, that one of the VMs I’d been testing with had failed in its VMware Tools update. Now, with both VMs in this particular test config updated to Parallels Tools v5, instead of getting 14-17MB/s transfer speed between them as I’d been getting under Paralles v4, I’m now getting 45-57MB/s. Now that’s a performance improvement.

When I was at University, a philosophy lecturer remarked rather sagely that University is the last place people can go to learn for the sake of learning.

That’s sort of correct, but not always so. People can fumble through their jobs on a day to day basis learning what they have to, but they can also work along the basis of trying to soak up as much information as they can along the way. I’m not always a knowledge sponge – particularly if my caffeine quota is on the light side for the day, but I like to think I learn the odd thing here and there.

In the spirit of knowledge acquisition, here’s a few smaller things I’ve learned recently:

• When simulating network connectivity problems, there’s a big difference between yanking the network cable and shutting down the network interface. (I was doing the interface shutdown, another person was doing the network cable unplug – and our results didn’t correlate.) Lesson: When escalating a case to vendor support, always spell out how you’re simulating the “comms failure” a customer is having.
• The ‘bigasm’ utility starts to fall in a heap and becomes extremely unreliable once you exceed about 2100 GB of data generated for a single file. Lesson: When setting out to generate 2.3+ TB of backup data, create a bunch of files and have a bigasm directive to generate a smaller amount of data per file.
• When setting up tests that will take a couple of days to run, always triple check what you’re about to do before you start it. Lesson: If you make a typo of 250 files at 100 GB each instead of 250 files at 10 GB each, bigasm/NetWorker won’t interpolate what you really meant.
• There’s a hell of a difference between Solaris 10 AMD release 2 and release 8. Lesson: If wanting to get a Solaris 10 AMD 64-bit OS working in Parallels Desktop for Mac v5 with networking, go for release 8. It will save many forehead bruises.
• ext3 is about as “modern” a filesystem as I am an elite sportsperson. Lesson: If wanting to achieve decent operational activities with backup to disk under Linux, use XFS instead of ext3.
• All eSATA is not created equal. Lesson: When using an motherboard SATA -> eSATA converter, make sure the dual drive dock you order doesn’t work as a port multiplier.

DETROIT SOCIAL CLUB

If you like Kasabian, you are going to love this six piece. They may describe themselves as “big beat junkie folk“, but they’re wrong, they are the new Kasabian. It’s that simple. There’s a little bit of bluesy Primal Scream in there perhaps, possibly even a little bit of Oasis, but mainly Kasabian. We won’t be ending the critique there however, because they also happen to write fucking awesome tunes. Very much like Kasabian do actually. You know the sort of songs; absolutely giant, sing along, room-filling, killer, foot-stomping monsters. They even have that kind of “na na na na na” bit in the middle of a track, so that the inner football fan inside you can scream along at their gigs. Again, this is no bad thing. It’s music to get swept up and feel pumped by. There’s not a lot of re-invention here, as they musically look a little backwards, but there’s no denying their collective ability to write an atmospheric anthem that occasionally goes a little psychedelic (you know for the stoners, in the same way Kasabian did). It’s a big sound, as is perhaps expected from a band that lists five members as guitarists. And big is what they are going to get, to go with their big Polydor record label signatures and eventual big venues in which to play their big singalongs. However, if you don’t like Kasabian, it’s probably fair to assume you won’t be enjoying much from them. Saying that, if you don’t like Kasabian you wouldn’t have gotten past the first line in this review.      (MB)

I don’t know about you but I’m sure getting that jaded feeling from all these 80s obsessed synth bands that currently clutter up the music scene.  So it comes as some relief to find that Toronto synthesizer trio Parallels are obsessed with the 70s instead. To be exact, it’s that decades brand of light electronica, often seen being produced by the likes of Giorgio Moroder, or Sparks (circa their Terminal Jive LP).  They take both of these influences and use the pulsating, moving basslines and oscillating effects to blend them with a certain sexy knowingness. It’s similar to the type of irresistible lure that Ladytron mastered to perfection.  Arpeggiator-driven melodies underpin the sweet vocals of electro siren Holly Dodson, who has the voice of a young Madonna on the tunes Ultralight and Dry Blood. Additionally, she’s found turning on some enticing, breathless, emotional vocals with the broodier and darker soundtrack Ghost Machines.  They were formed in 2008 by Crystal Castle’s tour drummer, Cameron Findley, who has aimed for a more sophisticated blend of hi-NRG disco and electronic pop, making them sound like a synth band for grown ups.  An album is set for release at some point before the end of 2009, but for now you can hear tracks from their previous three EP’s on Myspace.      (DV)

THE LOOM

It seems like we write about bands from across the bridges and tunnels of New York every other post on this blog at the moment, so frequent are the arrivals in The Recommender’s inbox from that part of the world.  No doubt this is on the back of the awesome CMJ festival that recently occurred there.  A festival that opens many loft apartments and warehouses to the public as spaces in which to showcase contemporary music.  Recently spotted on our radars from this event include Freelance Whales, which we covered here, and Sleigh Bells, who we listed here.  So perhaps the final band that is to emerge on the back of all the blogging buzz is The Loom.  Already one EP in, At Last Light, they are rumoured to be currently recording their debut full length album, which they’ve requested fans to help fund.  This multi-instumentalist, (in the truest sense of the word), six piece from Brooklyn sit just the right side of folk music, but only just.  OK, so there’s banjos and ukulele and female vocals that seem straight out of the Irish sixties, but it’s the beat-claps and John Fanning’s vocals that lift it into a slightly more contemporary box. It’s got great melodic parts, in the essence of Arcade Fire and the aforementioned Freelance Whales, but without the pop or snare drum. It may be a little twee for some of you, but we think there’s still plenty in the locker to enjoy here. Perfect for the winter ipod.   (MB)

Installing a completely new operating system on your Mac sound a little daunting. VMware Fusion takes out a lot of the hassle, and gives you the freedom to experiment with many operating systems. Many people use VMware Fusion or Parallels to virtualize another operating system.

This guide will show you how to create a virtual machine, using a cool Linux distribution,

Ubuntu 9.10: Karmic Koala

So lets get started

1. Download this free distribution of Linux Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala here.

2. Assuming you already own VMware go ahead and open it up, if not go ahead and download the demo here.

3. On the MenuBar click “File” then select “New…” or press Command+N

4. Since we downloaded Karmic Koala as a disk image (.ISO), we are going to select “Continue without disk”

5. You will receive another page with a few options, you’re going to want to select “Use Operating System Installation Disk Image File” and navigate to the 9.10 .ISO file.

6. Once you choose the right file, VMware should auto-detect the Operating System. If not, go ahead and set it to Linux, Ubuntu:

7. The last page should come up next, it just reviews a few different options you set for the Virtual Machine. Don’t set the RAM usage too high or memory swaps will occur, and even if you’re running a multi-core machine, set it to 1 virtual processor:

8. Once VMware Fusion creates the Operating System, you’re going to see it pop up in a list. Unless you have installed other Virtual Machines, you shouldn’t have any others on this window. I have installed gOS and Windows XP Pro 64.

9. Go ahead and select the startup arrow button and Ubuntu will pop up in another window. Your install will start now, so unless you really like reading boring information about ‘How Awesome Ubuntu is’ then go ahead and step away from the computer for a bit.

10. After a while you will have completed installing Linux Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. Congratulations. Your Virtual Machine will reboot after the install. You will see some command line flowing, followed by a log in screen:

Here it is. Your very first virtual machine running inside VMware Fusion. You can now mess around, and try out some other cool Linux Distributions. Windows can be installed by following pretty much the same directions as well.
