Van Sant w swoim “Paranoid Park” znów zabiera się za buntowniczy okres dorastania. Jest to o tyle dziwne, że na warsztat bierze społeczność skaterów a połowę filmu poświęca nielegalnemu skate-parkowi (tytułowy Paranoid Park), co jak na kolesia mającego 55 lat jest, jak mniemam, poważnym wyzwaniem i środowiskiem dość nietypowym. Jednak nie jest to tylko film o dorastaniu, nie jest to film tylko o deskorolce, ale jest to też osobliwa historia dzieciaka z Portland, którego wizyta w Paranoid Park, zmieniła całe życie.

Jak to u Van Santa, formalnie nie jest lekko. Typowe dla niego długie sceny, ujęcia en face dające czas na przemyślenie sytuacji bohatera, z towarzyszeniem nieprzypadkowej muzyki (a ta jest dość różnorodna, mówiąc eufemistycznie). Skateboard’owe wstawki niczym z narkomańskich wizji, a także wstawki para-dokumentalne. Zaburzenia chronologii wydarzeń i nieco chaotyczny (świadomie) narrator. Takie podejście do przedstawienia historii może irytować ale w przypadku “Paranoid Park” nie tylko nie męczy ale jest plusem. Zwłaszcza mantryczne, zamazane sceny popisów na desce nadają specyficzny, magiczny charakter owemu “parkowi“. Mimo chaosu formalno-narracyjnego film jest spójny i trzyma w napięciu, ciekawi i nie nudzi (niecałe 80 min trwania wydają się idealne). A napięcie jest obecne, bo nawet gdy nic się nie dzieje, widz ma pewność, że coś musi się zaraz wydarzyć. Nie zdradzając fabuły napiszę tylko, że historia nabiera rumieńców i nawet pojawia się shocking scene, która staje się kontrapunktem dla młodzieżowego charakteru filmu.

Ciekawym wydaje się też zestawienie dwóch światów skaterów. W świecie przeciętnym, zwykłym widzimy nastoletnich skate’ów, ubranych w modne ciuchy, z tzw. dobrych/normalnych domów, których głównym problemem jest zaliczenie cheerleaderki albo praca domowa. Paranoid Park (wzorowany nota bene na prawdziwym portlandzkim skateparku pod mostem) to świat skaterów reprezentujących całą historię buntowniczych subkultur, od punków, hipisów, przez bezdomnych po ludzi z rozbitych rodzin i przestępców, których poza życiorysem łączy pasja do deskorolki. To oni, z pozoru atrakcyjni dla młodzieży indywidualiści, otwierają głównemu bohaterowi drzwi do tragedii, która staje się punktem zwrotnym w jego życiu.

Paranoid Park to mini-studium młodzieńczych problemów w połączeniu z historią sensacyjną, pokazane w typowo van santowskiej oprawie estetycznej. Nie ma tu silenia się na oryginalność, nie ma dłużyzn, tematy proste nie drażnią. Jest za to rozpoznawalny styl, ładne zdjęcia, prosta ale ciekawa historia i dobre rozwiązania formalne. Każdemu kto chce zobaczyć film o zwykłym życiu, prostej historii i problemach już dla większości odległych, i nie chce się przy tym zrzygać z powodu pretensjonalnego stylu i żałosnego aktorstwa, mogę “Paranoid Park” swobodnie polecić. Uprzedzam jednak, że styl Gusa Van Santa nie każdemu się spodoba, ale to już nie mój biznes.

Because I’m so sick of people defending Miley’s awful interview style and basic inability to string together an articulate quote, I give you: Taylor Momsen being interviewed by Nylon TV.

Taylor is sixteen (hater comments about how she looks like she’s in her twenties can shove it because that is not valid in this argument) and sounds well-educated, smart, snarky and yes, articulate in this and most every interview she does.  Homegirl delivers the quotes gold, politely tells journalists to eff off if she isn’t in the mood for their incompetent questions, and doesn’t sound the least bit awkward.  I know people have said that she’s going to look back on these years and regret acting and dressing like she does, but I completely disagree with this as me and most of my friends were just like this at sixteen.  We don’t regret it.  We were still cooler than the Miley Cyrus’s of the world, even when we thought we were awesome for listening to Hole and MCR when no one else did (for the record I still do).  So please Miley, take note and don’t use your age as an excuse for why you sound so effing immature in interviews.  At least Taylor has something to say, and makes a point saying it.

The “F.I.L.M. of the Week” is Gus Van Sant’s “Paranoid Park,” a multi-layered movie that serves as both a crime drama and a portrait of a scared teenager.  The film serves as a testament to the prowess of Van Sant (Academy Award nominated director of “Milk” and “Good Will Hunting”), who not only helmed the movie, but wrote and edited it.  He excels at doing what I love to see filmmakers do: taking a simple premise and using the power of moviemaking to turn it into something extravagant.

Alex (Gabe Nevins) is a teenage skateboarder who makes a split-second decision that turns out to be a big mistake with life-changing ramifications.  The film follows the effect of the event on his life as he, apprehensive, attempts to hide the truth and escape the consequences.  The movie begins with an aura of mystery surrounding what is happening, but in just 80 minutes, Van Sant strips it all away and gets to the core of an insecure and distraught teenager.

The triumph of “Paranoid Park” is not the story, but the storytelling.  Van Sant brings a distinctively different style to this than he did to a movie like “Milk.”  He employs a non-linear story line to replicate the events running together in Alex’s mind.  Alex is a very passive figure in the movie, and we witness the tearing apart of his mind not in his dialogue, but mostly from drawn-out shots of him.  These shots provide such a clear insight into the character thanks to Van Sant allowing the cinematography to shine.  Throw in a soundtrack eclectic enough to rival a Tarantino movie, and you get one great movie to watch.

This first paragraph is going to be a bit pretentious, but bear with me. Movie titles are an important forum from which audiences can gleam information about a film; the story, a genre, or simply a mood can be pulled out of the title. It helps audiences know what they’re getting into. Every now and then, however, a film comes along whose title says more about the film’s themes than its plot; a title that retroactively seems to tell audience more about the film than reading a dozen reviews. Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park is just such a title, at once saying nothing about the film, but also evoking the youthful isolation, guilt and paranoia that are the film’s core themes. It’s a subtle feature of the film, but then again the strongest features of Paranoid Park is its amazing subtlety and the quiet grace with which it tries to capture the interior of the characters that populate it’s setting.

Paranoid Park tells the story of Alex (Gabe Nevins, who gives a fantastic performance), a young skateboarder whose father has moved out and whose mother is slightly carefree when it comes to keeping tabs on her son, who gravitates toward the “throw-away kids” that hang out at a local skate park, from whose name the film’s title is derived. Hanging out there one night he is invited by an elder statesman (of sorts) to hop a boxcar to grab some beer. It is here that Alex has an encounter with a railroad security guard which set the events of the film in motion. I’m relaying this narrative information as if it is temporally sequential. It isn’t. Van Sant scatters these bits of information throughout the film, whose temporality is jumbled and includes several scenes which are shown twice. Alex’s culpability in the death of this security guard is hopelessly ambiguous. I’ve seen the film twice and I’m still not sure whether he was responsible or not. To a fairly significant degree, though, his guilt or innocence is unimportant; what is important here, like in Van Sant’s Elephant, is how young people deal with death and other societal pressures. If that sounds dismissive I don’t mean for it to, because these themes fit Van Sant like a glove and play to his strengths as a director.

Gus Van Sant is a director whose heart has always been in formal experimentation and narrative complexities. His interest is less in realism and more in the (occasionally) hallucinatory realm of a character’s psyche, and that side of Van Sant’s personality is on full display here, perhaps more so than in any of his films since My Own Private Idaho. He mixes mediums, shooting the preponderance of the film on 35 mm, but splicing in skateboard footage that was shot on Super-8 film. These bits of spliced in skateboard footage provide the most interesting formal experiment in the film, as they appear to be placed in the film for no rhyme or reason, but they simply exist, coming to the surface as if they are part of the unconsciousness inherent in all members of the skateboarding subculture that Van Sant captures so well. This desire to capture the interior of his characters provides Van Sant with an opportunity for further experimentation, using sound design, soundscapes, and source music (which runs the gamut from Beethoven to Nino Rota to Elliott Smith) as an opportunity to try and ensnare the guilt and/or disaffection of Alex and his friends. The sound design combined with Van Sant’s always interesting imagery creates a dream-like atmosphere that reaches Lynch-ian proportions. When we are finally shown the encounter with the railroad security guard it is one of the most genuinely shocking moments I’ve seen in quite some time, but it is also oddly alien, as if the audience is allowed to drift through this dream world for most of the film, and when confronted with something as grisly as the security guard’s death it feels less like narrative information being provided to the audience and more like one more moment spent in Alex’s jumbled and guilt-ridden unconscious.

Van Sant provided movie going audiences with two films in 2008. The first was this under recognized gem; the other was the overblown and overrated Milk. Where Paranoid Park is subtly affecting, Milk telegraphs its emotional peaks and valleys. Where Paranoid Park focuses on capturing the interior of its protagonist, Milk has no time or interest in exploring Harvey Milk beyond reducing him to his achievements. In a way the aims of the two films are so different that comparing them does neither justice, but they are both the works of the same filmmaker and they are worlds apart. One is a fantastic film of youthful alienation that eschews Hollywood formula in favor of something different. The other is mechanical mediocrity. It’s a bummer most people saw the other.

If…. é o tipo do filme que parece impossível de ser realizado hoje. Tanto pelos momentos de delicadeza, quanto pela sua violência. Curioso como a obra de Lindsay Anderson, apesar de representar tão bem o período em que foi feita, o ano de 1968, vista atualmente pareça tão à frente do tempo.

A abordagem do universo juvenil de Lindsay Anderson é de uma sensibilidade sem tamanho. Principalmente em algumas questões polêmicas que o cinema ainda não parece ter resolvido bem. No filme, temos dois meninos que acabam se relacionando.  A homossexualidade numa escola tradicional britânica, um eterno tabu, é apresentada em um momento singelo e lúdico. Na seqüência que parece ter inspirado Gus Van Sant em Paranoid Park, em que um menino se encanta pelo  rapaz mais velho que faz exercícios no ginásio, a câmera lenta e a música leve conduzem o encantamento. Depois, eles aparecem dormindo juntos. E o mérito do inglês é filmar o carinho entre os dois com a mesma naturalidade que a cena teria se houvesse uma cama dividida por um homem e uma mulher.

Poucos cineastas abordariam a questão dessa forma. Me parece que é quase impossível retratar a homossexualidade no cinema sem forçar um posicionamento, sem transformar aquilo em apelação emocional ou em escândalo disfarçado de deboche, humor negro. Lindsay Anderson, que era homossexual, filma aquilo tudo com tanto carinho, as cenas não querem chocar, não pedem uma resposta imediata ao espectador.

Quanto à violência de If…., em tempos extremamente conservadores, cheios de gente moralista como essas que, depois da detenção de Roman Polanski, pedem a cabeça do cineasta como se ele fosse um monstro (o que estavam fazendo essas pessoas durante os trinta anos de “fuga” do polonês? Por que não fizeram campanha pela prisão dele? Por que não boicotaram seus filmes? Agora que ele é detido, mesmo com a vítima, vítima da própria mãe também, tendo perdoado, as pessoas se posicionam horrorizadas? É um tremendo falso moralismo, bem característico dos nossos tempos)… Por essas e outras que If… soa como um alienígena no novo milênio. O desfecho, certamente um dos melhores da história do cinema, é inimaginável nos dias de hoje. Nos anos 60, seria o caso das autoridades pedirem a prisão de Lindsay Anderson. Hoje, acredito que a própria sociedade pediria a cabeça do cineasta.

Da mesma forma, não é de costume ver algo tão simples, criativo e poderoso quanto a cena de amor entre Mick Travis (Malcolm McDowell) e uma menina, quando eles trocam beijos de tigre dentro de um bar. E o que dizer dos pequenos detalhes surrealistas? As cenas em preto e branco, o padre que concede o perdão dentro de uma gaveta, os fetos em conserva, a menina que sempre aparece num passe de mágica. Detalhes que amplificam a força de If….

E que continuaram nas duas sequências do filme, Um Homem de Sorte, de 1973 e Hospital dos Malucos, de 1982. A trilogia de Lindsay Anderson, para roubar a expressão de Ray Davies, poderia se chamar: Mick Travis, ou O Declínio e a Queda do Império Britânico. E o interessante é que Anderson não estava interessado em criar uma coerência entre os três filmes. Personagens vão e voltam, alguns guardam o mesmo nome, mas se apresentam com outra abordagem psicológica. As autoridades, em contrapartida, são sempre interpretadas pelos mesmos atores. O que as três obras realmente carregam em comum é a vontade anárquica de destruir as grandes potências da sociedade inglesa. Essa forma que o homem (um inglês então…) se prende e nunca mais consegue soltar.

Other than that, I caugth this Gus Van Sant movie over the weekend and it is pretty cool. It has an extraordinary perspective and narrative structure, which builds the suspense really well even though the movie is quite slow. Definitely worth checking out…

Y’all know how much I love Taylor Momsen.  Homegirl puts all those other chicks to shame on “Gossip Girl” with her absolute fierceness, and she’s only sixteen.  Sooo when I found these new candids of her I had to post them because A) she rules and B) apparently all of you love her too because Taylor’s posts always compete with Rob Pattinson’s for the most views.  Crazy, I know.

Anyways, here’s Taylor on the set of GG in Long Island, New York  August 14th filming a few scenes for an upcoming episode.  With the new season only a few weeks away, are my fellow fanatics as ready as I am??!

“Gossip Girl” star and future rock star, Taylor Momsen is Teen Vogue’s latest covergirl and she gives quite an interesting interview.  Read on for her thoughts on not getting “Hannah Montana” and why she’s so different from most girls her age.

From the second that Taylor Momsen takes the stage at the Annex, a small New York City rock club that typically hosts lesser-known acts with names like What Would Jesus Drive and Blood Feathers, it’s clear that the sixteen-year-old actress turned singer is extremely comfortable in her new role. Clad in a tiny off-white slip dress, she stalks confidently forward and starts growling, quite capably, into the mic; her powerhouse manner calls to mind both Karen O. and a young Courtney Love, and the inky-haired 20-something musicians who make up her band, the Pretty Reckless, look as though they can only just keep up.

Two days later, when Taylor sits down to discuss her “very different life” with Teen Vogue, the exhilaration hasn’t even begun to wear off: “I’ve always wanted to make music,” she explains. “I was literally humming melodies before I could talk.”

TEEN VOGUE: You seemed totally at home in front of that crowd the other night—is it true that, until recently, you’d never played a live show?

TAYLOR MOMSEN: The only other time I’ve been on a stage was when I starred as the Little Red Hen in the second grade. But my family used to play music and dance around in the basement every Saturday night. My sister and I even formed a band called Pink Boa—we’d put on tutus and masks, and I’d sing and play guitar and she’d play the drums. We knew two songs, “Seven Nation Army” and “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

TV: And you’ve been acting professionally for over a decade—that probably helps.

TM: Yeah, I kind of grew up in front of the camera: I started modeling when I was two. I was never pushed into it, but I never really chose it either. That’s why music is so different for me—I’ve known since I was little that this is what I want to do.

TV: Does that mean you’re finished with acting after Gossip Girl?

TM: It would be crazy to cut it out completely. And I love being on the show—I hope it goes on for a couple more years. But as for the future, I don’t know. I’m at a point now where I’m not doing anything just for money or fame.

TV: You recorded most of your album before signing a deal with your label, Interscope, whereas many famous actresses work the other way around. Was it important to you to do as much as possible yourself?

TM: The most obvious thing is to look at me and say, “Oh, pretty blonde girl, let’s put her in pop.” But I would never want to do something in music that isn’t representing me—I’d feel like I was faking myself. I wanted to have it all done so I could say, “Here’s who I am, either you like it or you don’t.”

TV: Tell us about your song writing process.

TM: I start with an idea, an emotion, and I write whatever comes into my mind. My lyrics are my diary—you’re hearing every detail of my life. I’m still learning guitar, so I have a writing partner who helps me: I know what I want to do, but I can’t physically do it, so it’s good to have someone there who can interpret. I’d call my music rock, but with pop hooks. I grew up listening to the Beatles, Blondie, and Joan Jett, and I love Nirvana.

TV: You recently finished high school, more than two years early. Were you just eager to get it over with?

TM: I found it kind of boring. I’m an artist; I’m not going to use trigonometry. Now I’m taking college classes online—I want to major in Language Arts.

TV: Do you have any interest in doing the regular college thing? Enrolling at a university, living in a dorm…

TM: For most people, college is a place where you learn about yourself, and I feel like I’m doing that already. I’m already independent.

TV: People also make great friends there.

TM: I have such trust complexes. I’m close to like two people.

TV: Is that a side effect of fame?

TM: I’ve always been like that. People misinterpret what I say all the time: They think I’m being offensive, when really, I’m only being opinionated. Most of my friends are older, too. I live a very adult life: I have two different careers; I’m on tour. What am I going to do, hang out with the high school kids? I just can’t relate to what they talk about—it seems so petty.

TV: Are your parents comfortable with your maturity?

TM: They have to be; it’s not going anywhere. But I’m responsible. I’m not one of those crazy teens. They trust me.

TV: Do they trust you with older boyfriends?

TM: I’m not dating anyone right now, but I’ve had lots of relationships. My parents know that I’m not going to date someone who’s sixteen. Boys are so much less mature than girls as it is; there’s just no way— I would eat a boy my age alive.

TV: You were a finalist for the part of Hannah Montana—are you ever relieved that you didn’t get that role?

TM: I think it’s a great opportunity for Miley, but yeah, I guess I am relieved. If I had gotten the part, it would be a very different show. It wouldn’t have worked for me. I push back.

TV: It’s hard to imagine you being totally happy at Disney.

TM: When I was nine, it seemed amazing. But I wouldn’t have been able to deal with not writing my own songs. I don’t want to lose the artistry—a lot of people in music right now are faces—manufactured. I don’t want to be that.

TV: And you’ve adopted a very rock ‘n’ roll look.

TM: I had long, pretty hair, and it didn’t fit me. I’m pretty, but I’m not, like, a “pretty girl.” So I pulled up a bunch of photos of Joan Jett and said, “Do that to my hair.” There was a distinct change in my wardrobe, too, and I know people were a little, um, taken aback. But it wasn’t me that changed—it was just that I decided to start being myself. Now I do my own makeup, my own hair, and dress myself, and it feels better.

TV: So this isn’t just another part? You’re not acting when you’re up on that stage?

TM: No way. The role is me.

Fue a prinicipios de 2008 cuando vi Paranoid Park en el cine y la verdad es que no lo dudé dos veces y en cuanto la vi en los comercios italianos disponible en DVD la compré (por abril de ese mismo año). El último trabajo de Gus Van Sant me pegó. Ya después de ver “Elephant” me pasé varios días con la necesidad de hablar sobre el film, con la idea de haber asistido a algo nuevo. Ese film ha sido sin duda un punto de inflexión en la carrera de Gus Van Sant, sin duda a mejor. Paranoid Park sigue la misma linea de Elephant y Last Days. Sin embargo, el gusto crativo de Van Sant no se ha agotado. Sigue sorprendiendo con más matices experimentales. El autor del ya lejano “El indomable Will Hunting” parece querer alejarse cada vez más del cine hollywoodiano y parece decidido a llenar de registros su obra, a acercarse un poco más a la definición de autor. No me gustaría destriparos la película, aunque si os puedo decir que se trata de un mágnifico retrato de un adolescente en una situación nada confortable. Una película de corta duración que pone en práctica el dicho: “lo bueno si breve, dos veces bueno”.

¿Por qué escribo ahora de esta película? La respuesta es que hace bien poquito que ha llegado a los cines españoles. Más de un año después de comprarla en DVD en Italia… Este film fue premiado en Cannes y alguien debería darse cuenta de que hay gente a la que le hubiese gustado verla en su día, no a estas alturas, totalmente desfasada. Ha sucedido lo mismo con “My bleuberry nights” de Wong Kar-Wai. Es lamentable y aseguro haber conocido gente que, a pesar de querer verla, se ha negado a acudir a las salas en protesta a semejante desastre. Es cierto que sólo he conocido a uno. Pero es igualmente cierto que no estoy mientiendo. ¡Salvemos el cine!

De az volt az első alkalmam ott, és rögtön nagyon megtetszett. Volt valami varázs erő és Paranoid volt az összes arc aki ott nyomult. Illegálisan készült a park teljesen. Mind a kezük által. Vonat festegetők… punkok… korisok, deszkások… és részegek… elveszett kölykök… Tök mindegy milyen szar családod is volt, ezeknek még annál is rosszabb jutott.

Hát ismét elérkeztünk egy ilyen bejegyzéshez. Mivel odakint hatalmas a hőség, így hát úgy döntöttem filmet nézek. Amúgy az utóbbi időben viszonylag sokszor befészkelem magam a gép elé és keresek valamilyen filmet ami felkeltette valami miatt az érdeklődésemet. Hát ez most sem volt másképpen. A héten lesz ez a film a tévében is, de olyan idióta időpontban, hogy azt ember meg nem nézi… Szóval úgy döntöttem, hogy inkább megszerzem, minthogy fent maradjak éjszaka miatta…

Hát, hogy őszinte legyek most sem egy vidám hangvételű dologról van szó. Úgy látszik nekem ezek a filmdrámák jobban bejönnek, mint mások. Bár meg tudnám ezt is cáfolni… Szóval most egy díjnyertes alkotásról van szó, ami első látásra nem tűnik egy szórakoztató esti mozinak. Szerintem valaki akkor tudja ‘élvezni’, ha egy kicsit jobban a dolgok mögé néz. Ezt a filmet nem elég csak bambán nézni, hanem látni kell. Én úgy érzem mindenképpen érdemes megnézni. Ezt nem úgy értem, hogy valami hasznos tanulságot tartalmazna, hanem mindazért  hogy átérezzük a helyzetet, mindazt ami lejátszódik Alex lelkében.

A történek meglehetősen lassan halad és többször is visszatérnek a jelenetek ugyanabba az idősíkba. Ez nem más, mint ahogy Alex visszaemlékezik, gondolkodik a történteken. Amúgy ha az egész filmet jellemeznem kellene valamivel, akkor valószínű, hogy azt mondanám, hogy egy tipikus középosztálybeli amerikai családmodell váló szülőkkel, szabadjára engedett élvezetekkel, züllő kamaszokkal. De mindez mit jelent? Valami másban kell megtalálni az élvezetet, az örömöt, ami nem más, mint a deszkázás, ami köré az egész kerettörténet épül. Mint a cím is mutatja ‘Paranoid Park’. Ez egy hírhedt deszkásparadicsom, aminek már a neve is titokzatosságok, szinte félelmet sugall a nézőnek. Valami történik itt, ami mindent felkavar Alex fejében, valami olyan dolog amiről sejtjük, hogy nem egy tündérmese. Erre akkor jöhetünk rá, amikor a rendőrség is nyomozni kezd egy bizonyos dolog után, ami nem más, mint egy baleset, amit gyilkosságnak feltételeznek. Ebbe úgy kerül bele a főhősünk, hogy megismerekedik egy enyhén szólva kétes társasággal, ami az okát jelenti végülis az önmarcangolásnak. Amikor észreveszi őket a biztonsági őr a vonaton Alex meglöki és ráesik a sínre, ahol szó szerint félbevágja a száguldó vonat. Innentől már nincs megállas, kezdődik az álomszerű vízió, a visszaemlékezés. Végül úgy dönt, hogy senkinek sem mondja el a történteket, hanem inkább leírja. A film legvégén derül végülis erre fény, hogy miért ezt teszi. Egy baráti tanács hatására, valószínűleg ez azt is modellezik, hogy a lány, Macy nagyon jó emberismerő és nem azt kérte Alextől, hogy mondja el neki, henem írjon egy levelet a számára. Írja ki magából a fájdalmat, szabaduljon meg az összes dologtól, ami ezt a szorongást okozza és végül pedig égesse. Így zárul a film. Igazából homályban marad ennek ellenére minden, mivel nem tudjuk, hogy mit derített ki a rendőrség, főleg hogy megtalálták a folyóba hajított gördeszkát is…

A filmben feltűnnek természetesen még fontosabb mellékszereplők is. Ilyen például Alex barátnője, aki -én úgy érzem- csak kihasználja a fiút és mindvégig egy tökéletes, már szinte művi életet él a Alexszel ellentétben. Ezen kívül Jared, Alex barátja is viszonylag fontos szerphez jut, hisz együtt mennek el a végzetes kirándulásra a parkba. Neki inkább csak az fontos, hogy minnél ‘menőbb’ legyen, igazából más nem is érdekli és ezért mindenre képes. A filmben az anya és a Alex öccse csak pár jelentéktelen jelenetben van jelen, míg az apa csak egyben, annak ellenére, hogy Alex vele akarta megosztani a történteket. Ezeken kívül többen nem kapnak jelentősebb szerepet, csak úgymond mindvégig statiszták maradnak.

Gus van Sant filmje számomra megint egy fontos állomás úgy érzem. Kitűnően modellezi mindazt, amit Alex átérez, szinte már olyan jól, hogy maga a néző is a helyzetbe képzeli magát, érzi a dolog a terhát a vállán és közelít az összeroppanáshoz, de aztán valami mégis megoldást jelent számára. Hát igen, ez a film. Ajánlom, hogy aki teheti nézze meg, bármilyen unalmasnak is tűnik majd első látásra. Nekem bent van a top 10-ben. Nem tudnám negatív dolgokkal jellemezni, és nem is várom el a filmtől, hogy ennél gyorsabban haladjanak az események, hisz az egész egy elmélkedés, egy belső harc. Jó, mondjuk az is igaz, hogy az egész cselekményt bele lehetne sűriteni nem egész 15 percbe… Szerintem jó alkotás, érdemes volt rá időt szakítani.

Hace algunos años me aburrí un poco de ver siempre las películas hollywoodense y me decidí a visitar el lado “oscuro, intrigante y poco solicitado” de blockbuster: cine de arte.

En fin, paseándome por esta zona hace ya algunas semanas me encontré con un título que llamo mi atención y por solo medio leer rápidamente renté la película creyendo que se trataba de un filme de Gus Van Sant, que sólo me ha dejado buen sabor de boca con las únicas dos películas de su autoría que he rentado. Cuál fue mi sorpresa al abrir la película y me encontré con el nombre de otro director: Jonathan Caouette y leyendo mejor la sinopsis me di cuenta de que se trataba de un documental y me dije a mi misma: weeebaa los documentales. En los personal nunca he sido muy fanática de los documentales, pero ya habiendo pagado por la película me decidí a verla, ni pedos.

El resultado después de verla fue el siguiente: quedé realmente fascinada con el largometraje que hasta decidí subir algo de ella a este mísero blog. El nombre del documental??: “Tarnation”, ópera prima del director Jonathan Caouette, quien es también escritor, editor y protagonista (junto con su madre y abuelos) un proyecto fílmico que me parece que no dejará a ninguna persona indiferente, sea por el despliegue de colores, psicodelia, música, crudeza y corazón con el que está realizado.  Como plus tiene además como productores ejecutivos a John Cameron Mitchel (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) y a Gus Van Sant (“Paranoid Park”, “Milk”, “My Own Private Idaho” y varias más).

“Tarnation” logra mediante videos grabados durante 20 años con distintos formatos de cámara, videodiarios, fotografías, videos musicales, escenas de películas, mensajes de máquinas contestadoras,  psicodelia, música exquisitamente escogida, referencias a David Lynch, creatividad y honestidad lo que pocas películas logran en nuestros días: retratar las relaciones familiares sin tapujos ni tratando de hacerlas ver como el núcleo social perfecto, retratar los problemas entre ellos, las desgracias de una vida no afortunada y los miedos, inseguridades, anhelos, traumas de un ser humano que además de consumir drogas en una temprana edad, no contar con una figura paterna, ser homosexual, tener una madre con problemas psicológicos que se la pasa durante toda su vida saliendo y entrando a instituciones mentales y unos abuelos excéntricos pero cariñosos.

El director y protagonista contaba con 160 horas en videos y material que había venido grabando desde los 11 años de edad, todo esto para editar una reseña extremadamente real y apegada a lo que él había venido viviendo desde que era un pequeño (viendo a su madre ser violada frente a sus ojos, llendo y viniendo de instituciones para niños huérfanos y con un problema de “despersonalización” que hace ver su vida como si fuera un sueño ). El director nos abre una ventana para ver lo complicado que puede ser el ser humano, con sus oscuros momentos, sus depresiones, sus más profundos miedos y sus anhelos de alcanzar la felicidad ante todo. Es impresionante la empatía que logra despertar en el espectador y te hace cuestionarte muchas cosas sobre tu propia vida, relaciones familiares y proyectos personales.

Tarnation, es un collage fílmico de un ser humano fascinantemente optimista, a pesar de todo lo que ha vivido…es la única forma en que puedo describir rápidamente esta película que espero poder adquirir pronto, ya que merece la pena tenerla en la colección personal…siempre es bueno tener una película en casa que nos recuerde todos los sentimientos que un ser humano es capaz de experimentar.

Este fin de semana la cartelera de los cines españoles han estrenado varias de las últimas películas producidas en los EE.UU.; entre ellas se van a destacar dos: Brüno, del siempre polémico (cada día más polémico se puede decir sin temor a incurrir en un error) Sacha Baron Cohen, y Más allá de la duda, protagonizada por Michael Douglas, lo que siempre motiva expectación y una buena película.  La primera trata sobre un reportero gay políticamente más que incorrecto que ridiculiza el mundo de la fama; la segunda es un thriller judicial en la que el suspense gira en torno a la búsqueda de pruebas por parte de un periodista para desenmascarar las malas artes de un fiscal que gana los juicios colocando pruebas falsas de ADN en las escenas del crimen. Dos argumentos distintos y un nexo común: el periodismo… sólo que dos formas distintas de ejercerlo.

Brüno es un periodista gay que saca de los nervios a todas las víctimas que tienen la mala suerte de encontrarse en medio de los dardos envenenados del personaje principal, protagonizado por Sacha Baron Cohen (actor que ha encarnado a Ali G y a Borat, dos ejemplos de lo que es el cine políticamente incorrecto, sin escrúpulos y sin vergüenza ninguna). La sutileza y discreción son dos palabras que Brüno no conoce, no ha debido oírlas jamás (todo lo contrario que los insultos, los gritos, el vocerío y las palabras poco amables de los guardaespaldas). Más bien el histrionismo y el escándalo se asocian mejor con Baron Cohen y con los personajes que encarna en las producciones en las que participa o dirige.

El reportero gay llamado Brüno es un apasionado por el mundo de la moda… incluso supera la mera pasión para convertirse en un auténtico psicótico por la moda, colándose en un desfile de moda (el de Ághata Ruiz de la Prada en la Pasarela de Milán). Busca la fama de la manera más rápida posible, y como dar la nota en lugares importantes en el momento adecuado es una forma muy rápida y segura de convertirse en un personaje famoso, aunque sólo sea durante unos días, en la cabeza de Brüno no existen las dudas. Si arruinar un desfile de moda de Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada le va a dar fama, lo arruina. Y si para conseguirlo tiene que ponerse un traje de velcro que pegue a su cuerpo todo objeto con el que se cruce, se pone un traje de velcro (tal y como podemos ver en los anuncios publicitarios emitidos por televisión).

El realismo de este falso documental se produce porque todas las personas que aparecen (salvo los actores principales) no saben de qué se trata; de ahí que sus reacciones sean impredecibles y que los golpes que Brüno se lleva no sean fruto del montaje posterior de la película, sino de la vida real. Su comportamiento irreverente, políticamente incorrecto, inmoral… le lleva incluso a ser un fisgón que llega hasta el punto de querer apuntarse el número de Michael Jackson que la hermana del fallecido cantante, Latoya, tiene anotado en su blackberry. Pero a pesar de toda la irreverencia y la incorrección, la muerte de Michael Jackson hizo que Sacha Baron Cohen y la distribuidora (Sony Pictures) se lo pensaran mejor: en las salas de cine no se verá esta escena, pero sí en el DVD cuando se lance a la venta.

Por otro lado, el personaje del periodista de la otra película seleccionada (Más allá de la duda) no busca la fama a cualquier costa. Lo que quiere es conseguir las pruebas necesarias para probar que un fiscal (Michael Douglas) es la personificación de la mentira y la falsación de pruebas judiciales. Para ello el periodista decide inculparse en un caso. Este fiscal protagonizado por el veterano actor hijo del mítico Kirk Douglas (Espartaco es uno de los sus grandes éxitos cinematográficos) es un ejemplo de la corrupción que vive en la justicia norteamericana y que se retrató en el film de los años 50 (Más allá de la duda, 1956, del director Fritz Lang) en la que se basa esta película, que no es más que un remake. El cine negro estadounidense de la década de los 50 vuelve con nuevos actores (Michael Douglas en el papel del fiscal, y el joven actor Jesse Metcalfe -Mujeres desesperadas-) para ofrecer a los espectadores un thriller en el que la mentira es la principal protagonista.

Pero la mentira tarde o temprano sale a la luz, y el periodista que encarna Jesse Metcalfe quiere que sea más temprano que tarde; y para ello cuenta con la ayuda de un amigo, que hará con él lo que sea para descubrir la verdad, ahogada por tanta mentira y corrupción en un mundo como el judicial, en el que lo que se debe combatir, en principio, es tanto la mentira como la corrupción, para que la verdad sea conocida y las sentencias judiciales sean justas y basadas en los datos verdaderos (y no sólo veraces) que proporcionan las pruebas judiciales. Pero cuando un fiscal falsifica las pruebas judiciales la trama se complica. Eso sí, para que la trama sea más complicada, lo personal se debe mezclar con lo profesional.

¿Cómo se consigue esto en un thriller judicial? Una manera es hacer que el periodista que busca la verdad se enamore de la ayudante del fiscal que utiliza la mentira para ganar los juicios. De esta manera los sentimientos amorosos, la búsqueda de la verdad para desenmascarar a la mentira, y las complicaciones que tiene el periodista para conseguir su objetivo cuando el fiscal se da cuenta de la colaboración entre su ayudante y el periodista, se mezclan en este thriller que promete, si no un éxito de taquilla, sí muy buenos resultados en lo que a recaudación se refiere.

Estas dos películas (junto a otras como una nueva entrega de la saga interminable de Harry Potter, Harry Potter y el misterio del príncipe; una nueva comedia de Sandra Bullock, La proposición; y la producción independiente Paranoid Park) se han estrenado este fin de semana pasado, y durante esta semana serán las principales novedades del mundo del cine.

Veremos qué éxito tienen las historias de estos dos periodistas muy distintos que se mueven entre el thriller y la comedia.

”Como Crimen y Castigo, pero con skaters”. Así definió el director estadounidense Gus Van Sant su última película Paranoid Park, basada en un libro de Blake Nelson y ganadora del premio del 60 aniversario del festival de Cannes. A estas alturas no hace falta preguntarse quién es Gus Van Sant y qué ha hecho hasta la fecha. Gerry – en la que dos amigos se pasaban dos horas caminando buscando un poco de aventura- , Elephant – un film machacado por la crítica, a la vez que sorprendió a muchos otros y que recreaba la matanza ocurrida en el instituto Columbine por parte de dos adolescentes- , Descubriendo a Forrester – protagonizada por Sean Connery y, quizás, su obra de corte más comercial – y Mala Noche – en la que el estadounidense demuestra que con pocos recursos y con 19.000 euros también se puede hacer cine- por poner algunos ejemplos de su filmografía. Paranoid Park nos cuenta la historia de Álex, un joven cuyos padres están separados y que, sin querer, mata a un guardia de seguridad en las proximidades de Paranoid Park, en la que practica skateboard junto con sus amigos.

Parece que se ha convertido en costumbre estrenar en solitario cada semana, un título de los que se presupone dejarán sus buenos dividendos en taquilla; y esta, le ha tocado a “La proposición”, protagonizada por la incombustible Sandra Bullock, que vuelve a ofrecernos (mucho me temo), otro de sus recitales interpretativos dentro del género de la comedia.

Si seguís este Blog, el 24 del mes pasado, veríais como a mi compañero Snake, cuando publicó el “Box Office USA del 19 al 21 de junio”, le parecía una broma que fuera esta película la que estuviera liderando la taquilla norteamericana. Pero así era.

Veremos los resultados que consigue en España. La Bullock sigue teniendo su “tirón”, cae bien (aún pecando muchas veces, ella, o sus personajes, de cargantes), y las comedias ligeras e intranscendentes son apropiadas para combatir “las calores”… Se augura pues, que muchos atenderán a su “proposición”.

Y el viernes… “Bruno”, y cinco pelis más.

Si visteis “Borat” y os gustó, seguro que repetiréis con “Bruno”, otro de los personajes a los que da vida Sacha Baron Cohen en su serie Da Ali G Show. Si no os gustó, si no os apeteció verla, y si tampoco tenéis interés por esta, hay más estrenos, y más comedias para elegir.

Comedias, dos más: “Un novio para mi mujer”, y “V.O.S.”. La primera es una producción argentina, y la segunda, española, con un argumento que promete un cierto interés, y parece alejada de la típica comedia de enredos de parejas.

Un thriller, “Mas allá de la duda”, protagonizado por Michael Douglas, el que por cierto, no se ha prodigado mucho últimamente por la gran pantalla, es otra de las ofertas de la semana. La dirige el ya veterano Peter Hyams, que aunque de carrera irregular, nos ha ido dejando títulos que se nos han quedado en el recuerdo (“Capricornio uno” -1978, “Atmósfera Cero”, 1981”, “Más fuerte que el odio” -1988, “Muerte súbita” -1995, “The relic” -1997, “El fin de los días” -1999).  La película, es un remake de la dirigida por Fritz Lang en 1956.

“Paranoid Park”, un drama dirigido por Gus Van Sant, llega con dos años de retraso, cuando nadie lo esperaba ya. Rodada un año antes que “Milk”, por la que Van Sant obtuvo una candidatura al Oscar al mejor director, y su protagonista, Sean Penn, consiguió el Oscar al Mejor Actor de la edición de este año, cuenta la historia de un chaval de 17 años aficionado al monopatín, que se ve involucrado en la muerte de un hombre.

El género de terror está representado por “Paintball”, y en ella, un grupo de jóvenes que participan en un juego de aventura, se ven acosados por un asesino. Si leéis más abajo la sinopsis, veréis que su argumento no presenta mucha originalidad, pero si os va el género, es lo único que podréis ver esta semana en pantalla.

Eso es todo. A la semana que viene, hablaremos de “Harry Potter y el misterio del príncipe”.

La “pareja” se dirige entonces a Alaska a conocer la peculiar familia de él, y la ejecutiva de ciudad, acostumbrada a tener todo bajo control, se encuentra inmersa en situaciones surrealistas que escapan a cualquier lógica conocida. Con planes de boda en camino y un agente de inmigración tras sus pasos, Margaret y Andrew se comprometen a seguir con el plan previsto pese a las consecuencias.

Pero quedarse sólo tampoco resulta una buena opción. Y mientras, el enemigo, invisible, continúa su particular caza.
