The human "new entry" also were well represented among the riders!

THERE’S something truly beautiful about the Blessing of the Hounds ceremony that opens the formal foxhunting season. It’s a “high church” event for foxhunters, a way to honor the sport’s most important players: the hounds, the game, and the land.

At Iroquois, we add a special twist by including retired hounds in the blessing ceremony, a tip of the top hat to their years of service and all the sport they and their progeny have given the club.

A good many of the Iroquois Hunt’s neighbors and landowners were in attendance today as the riders, horses, hounds, and hunt staff gathered in toasty sunshine on the clubhouse lawn. Deacon Bryant Kibbler conducted the service, and in his brief homily, he, too, made a point to honor our old soldiers who were standing nearby with huntsman Lilla Mason, their sterns gently waving as if they were remembering their glory days in the hills and fields around them.

They were joined by a sprinkling of current members in the hunting pack. Our big woolly, Grundy’s son Sassoon, is “far from retired,” Lilla said, “but he loves a party.” The sisters Finite and Finesse, fondly known as “two bodies, one brain,” also attended before taking to the hunt field.

Two bodies, one brain: Finite and Finesse

(In case you need a reminder about how they got their nickname, here is their story, originally posted in Hound’s Life: Summer Walk earlier this year:

They are a testament to this hunt staff’s patience. They showed little real interest in hunting early on in their careers and usually could be found loping along together as if in their own world. But one day, something clicked.

“Lilla spotted them on a run out hunting one day near Blue Fox Farm,” Miller recalls. “She said over the radio, ‘It’s Finesse!’ I said, ‘No, you’ve got that wrong,’ and she came back on the radio and said, ‘And Finite!’ I couldn’t believe it.”

But there they were, the two sisters leading the whole pack.

“They lost 10 or 15 pounds that season because they finally started hunting,” Miller said. “Before then it seemed like they could just live on air. We used to feed them about this much”–cupping his hand–”and they still stayed fat because they expended so little energy on the hunt field.”

Sassoon, Finesse, and Finite are all woolly hounds rather than smooth-coated. The other woollies out this morning to receive their blessing were Gloucester, Fickle, and Stalker.

For Stalker, it was an especially important milestone. Stalker is nine years old this season, and he has a heart ailment. “Every day is a blessing for Stalker,” said Lilla, and that’s true. We don’t know how long we will have old Stalker around, but he has earned the hunt’s special affection for his courage.

For Stalker, every day is Blessing Day

The other retired hounds who enjoyed a nostalgic visit to the hunt club were Parapet, Pancake (better known in her early hunting days as “Pancake. Pancake. PANCAKE!”); Glamorous, so named because she appears to be wearing an ermine wrap around her neck and shoulders; Radiant; Glowworm (whose father, Captain, was the first hound retired under the auspices of the Hound Welfare Fund); and Harlequin, the HWF’s retiree of the year for 2009 who was featured in the blog earlier this year.

Harlequin, as captured by Peggy Manness of Maness Photography

The older hounds stepped right back into their familiar role, pushing their way right up with the younger hounds to compete for biscuits and trotting over to visit spectators gathered around the lawn for the ceremony. One child could be heard to say, “Mommy! That dog’s got a beard!”

We love our woollies!

The clip below is from the beginning of the Blessing of the Hounds ceremony; the two biggest woollies are Sassoon and Stalker.

Then it was on up the road for a stirrup cup in a field adjacent to Miller Trust Farm, where the hounds are kenneled.

It was especially nice to see so many young riders out today! They took everything in stride. The smallest riders retired from the field after having their photos taken (and some ham biscuits and cake, provided by Lilla as part of the stirrup cup). But the other juniors joined right in for the hunt day, galloping and jumping and watching the hounds work in the grassy fields, woods, and creek bottoms on Miller Trust and the surrounding country.

We think everyone–hounds, horses, and riders–went home happy. The weather was too hot for good scenting, but the hounds worked well together, and, all in all, it was a pleasant start to the formal season, complete with some impromptu schooling over fences in “the bowl” near Boone Creek on Miller Trust. In the clip below, you get a good idea of how high some of the growth is now, courtesy of the unusually wet summer we’ve had. The clip starts with the field jumping a coop and also includes the sound of Lilla’s horn and the hounds speaking briefly.

Finally, it was time to hack home again. Lilla rode her horse, Lager, right into the kennel to make sure everyone was home safely.

Lilla and Lager make sure everyone's back safe at the kennel

We hope you had a happy hack home, too.

Happy Blessing Day, everyone!

GO STRAIGHT AT THEM: – January 31, 2009

I fully support the President. If we want positive change in America, he’s the man we should back. He comes nearest to my own philosophy and that of people I respect and care about most. However, I feel he is being “reasonable” with his opposition to the point of timidity, if not self-deception in the present situation. What should he do?

Go straight at them.

Eschew any advice from Wall Street chameleon Robert Rubin and his clones who brought us NAFTA, GATT and WTO, and mentored Clinton, Bush, and now Obama with the same advice that created the present fiscal disaster. Prosecute Goldman Sachs.

Speak Keynesian economics again. Emphasize we the people, public issues, community, human rights, common sense, and the common good; not the bottomline for a gaggle of avaricious stockholders.

Seek new, innovative solutions – not stock reprises of old routines; that’s the pattern of alcoholics and addicts.

Corporations must pay their fair share to support the system that enabled their success; stop treating them as “individuals” in the legal system; hold executives and stock holders personally accountable for their actions.

Protect the planet. JOB ONE. Everything else is subordinate in priority.

Educate the children – dump top-heavy, discriminatory Trojan Horse Standards obstacles; eliminate public subsidies (vouchers) for boondoggle separatist, preferential, and elitist “home” schooling; insist upon a democratic public education, scholarship, and scientific rationalism.

Call the generation to service: “Let’s get our hands on these problems and solve them. We can do it, if we stop procrastinating and move on.”

Tell Republicans they can worry about haircuts, dirty words, and hurting people by making money from wage slavery, exploitation, lies and violence. The rest of us will go to work to end two disastrous wars and fix the environment, health care, and the economy, the nation’s now critical issues (thanks to years of flagrant and cynical Republican corporatist neoconservative neglect, abuse, misuse, and outright theft).

We can’t let the Republican monarchists kill the real American dream: a better life for all our people, children, posterity, not just ourselves.

We’re not in this life for the next quarterly report, we’re here to build a lasting nation, under a rule of law that we can be proud of again; and that means saving it from the Republican cabal that brought us this fiasco, before it collapses us in an economy of chaos and death, as they smugly profit off our bones.

How’d that be? I’d like it fine. And, we need to dump the Bluedog Democrats and give President Barak Obama an overwhelming progressive majority in both houses of congress, too, or we will spend generations undoing the harm of the Bushies and their corporate neocon masters.

If it will be done, it must be done soon, or I fear it will not be done at all (although the planet will outlive us, barren as the moon, perhaps).

WALDO HEMMERSLEGG’S HISTORY OF THE WORLD: (Excerpt from COMMON LIVES, unpublished novel).

Our story begins – for it is literally our story, the story of humankind – about three million years ago in an African gorge in Tanganyika. To the west is towering Mount Kilimanjaro, but here in Oldavai there is desert where once it was savannah teeming with antelope and zebra, wildebeest and all manner of animal treasures – some still with us and those now extinct. In the midst of this was a hunting, gathering troop of advanced apelike creatures, one of whom, a female we call “Lucy” was the recipient of a rare mutated gene that made her the first human. All human females carry that gene. It is not present in males. Left to the males, humankind would revert to apedom. No wonder the ladies are considered a “civilizing influence.” Hell, there wouldn’t be any civilization at all without them. No man would ever think of building a chair when he had difficulty mastering the stick in the termite hole when trying to obtain a little protein.

If we had a time lapse film of the species from its beginning, we would see Lucy’s descendents evolving and expanding up out of Africa into the Middle East, hence to Europe and Asia, hence all over the planet. The genetic material that makes human beings white, brown, black, yellow or red is 1/100th of 1% of our genetic makeup. Everything else is the same. We are every one of us 99.99% identical in every other genetic respect. That should make us a tolerant, peaceful species, but we’re not. We’ve fought and killed each other from Lucy’s day on. We form groups and maintain them as the “best” and attempt to destroy any one or any thing (including ideas) that may come along and threaten our belief in the holy righteousness of our own brand of blind ignorance. We are, after all, entitled to our superstitions, no matter how many other people must be destroyed in order to satisfy them.

In Rite of Passage Alexei Panshin wrote that there are “no spear carriers in real life.” A spear-carrier is the guy in the opera or movie who is stabbed as the hero goes by; the one who falls off the parapet feathered by an arrow. They are anonymous, often faceless and assumingly soulless creatures to be killed at will for dramatic effect. They are not other people, but props to make the hero look good.

There is, in reality, only we and us. It’s hard for red-necked, hate-filled crackers to admit that they are part of the human race. “Otherness” is a big issue for them. It is only by denying the humanity of their victims that they are able to do such savagery upon them. It is only by denying their own humanity that they are able to do such savagery upon themselves. Tragically, both viewpoints work, if the aim is to hurt somebody.

That’s why the military concentrates on “doing a job of work.” Moving boulders, or whole villages, or killing whole peoples is easier when these “objects” are considered inert and subject to our divinely directed whim. When one’s “cause is right,” because “God is on our side,” and “we must protect our way of life,” murder is most holy. Sadness to relate, we still seem to be comfortable with all that, and remain irate about our inherent equality. What’s the real problem? Nobody’s really all that special.

LAST WORDS:

Now, here’s an arresting classified ad:

“I would like to fight a Republican supporter. If you are one, have a fiery streak, please contact me so we can meet and physically fight. I would like to beat the s—t out of you.” – From a posting seen on Craigslist.org

William Kennedy, LEGS:

“I am bored by people who keep returning life to a moral plane, as if we were reducible, now, to some Biblical concept or its opposite, as if all our history and prehistory had not conditioned us for what we’ve become. It’s enough to make a moral nigger out of a man. The niggers are down there, no doubt about it. But Jack didn’t put them there and neither did I. When we get off the moral gold standard, when the man of enormous wealth is of no more importance to anybody than the man in rags, then maybe we’ll look back to our own day as a day of justifiable social wrath.

“Meantime, the game is rising, not leveling.

Jack taught me that.

Cured me.

(Brother Wolf, are you listening?)”

“LIKE TEARS IN THE RAIN”:

“Never judge a book by its cover unless it’s red.” Leo Gorcey, Bowery Boys.

I pamiętajcie – żadnego palenia papierosów.

/

Better late than never – all of you are invited to a warming house party at my place. Probably after 8 p.m., not sure of the date, but I guess after 3rd of May. Just write when it’s the most suitable for you.

My apartment is so small that you have to divide into several groups of people, and visit me one group after another (let’s say 15 minutes for each group). Organize yourselves into the groups, otherwise I’m gonna do it the way you don’t like it. Another thing – there is only one chair in my apartment – you will have to fight for it, or sit gently on the floor. Please, wear nice socks this day, because you will have to take your shoes off entering my place. Remember – no smoking (I mean cigarrettes, not cloth). As you see, nothing is allowed at my place, nothing giving fun, so consider if you still want to visit me to warm my place up

Yours forever, Marysia

No cóż, do rzeczy.

Przerzuciłam książki i plecak. .

Bye.

It's flat. It's sloped. It's both! If you’ve been following week 9’s roof posts, you may

It's flat. It's sloped. It's both!

If you’ve been following week 9’s roof posts, you may have noticed an angle… or more specifically, one main angle decidedly un-90-degree in nature… or many of them, sitting side-by-side.

And if you’ve tooled around our Plans + Elevations page, you also may have noticed a certain flatness to most of the elevations. Indeed, most of the renderings (bar the kitchen cross-section) give the impression of a flat roof. And when all is said and done, that is what we’ll have… or appear to have… from the front, back and east elevations that is.

Will from Green Bottle Workshop explains:

“The roof style is a typical shed roof (meaning it slopes to one side). The original concept called for a flat roof, but the materials for a flat roof were too costly. By sloping the roof and using parapet walls to square off the house, we were able to achieve the look of a flat roof while staying within budget.”

Front parapet wall.

“The roof slope is a 3 on 12. meaning it rises 3-inches per foot across. Most roofing materials have a minimum slope requirement and 3/12 is a typical slope preference for most materials. It will provide slope that’s steep enough for water to fall faster, keeping it from draining slowly and finding its way into the house.”

Which brings us to the rafter tails (the part of the rafters which overhang the wall). Again, Will from Green Bottle:

“We lengthened the rafter tails by 4-feet to allow water to fall further away from the house. And, because the cut-out of these uses the same language as the steel rafter tails we’ll be using for the master bathroom overhang and the eyebrow above the living room glass walls, we thought that leaving them exposed would provide a nice additional design detail.”

Rafter tails.

And the roofing material?

M E T A L ! ! !

We’ll be using a galvanized aluminum… called galv-alum (and why wouldn’t it be called that?).

Galv-alum is better than typical galvanized metal because it contains a coating that makes it impervious to rust.

Galv-alum… looking unassuming.

We really like the metal roof and its shed-dy vernacular (see Pops, we will have a shed)… so much so, in fact, that we’ll be using it to clad the exterior of the dining room extension on the west side of the house as well.

Actually, Will and Matthew had originally planned to use steel for the dining room exterior (partially oxidized and then sealed). But, steel is at a premium these days (even in this former steel town), and the weight and thickness required would have us exceeding our budget.

Still, we’re no less excited by the prospect of a galv-alum cladded extension… and can’t wait to see it in action.

Dining room extension.

After extending the tails and finishing up the roof for next week’s galv-alum installation, the final hours of week 10 saw a start on the cladding.

We’re using standard sheets of Hardie Board—a type of fiber cement siding—cut into varying lengths and widths. After it’s painted, it will, very nearly, have the appearance of wood, but at a price well within our budget. Hardie Board is also more durable than most wood siding and it takes and holds paint much better, meaning less maintenance going forward.

A start on the end.

Flachere Dächer verlangen also größere Fenster.

Stuk stuk stuk – deszcz uderza w parapet,
Próbuje przez szybę się przedrzeć,
Lecz nie da rady, bo w środku panuje sen.

Monotonnie wygrywany rytm,
Na instrumentach deszczowych,
Pozwala w sobie się skryć
I zapomnieć o spiekocie słońca.

Demony w swych leżach,
Nie chcą zmoknąć skacząc po dachach,
Czekają na wypogodzenie -
Aż chmury przegna wiatr,
Gdy znów ruszą ulicami miast.

Niewiele jest znaczeń deszczu,
Co nieprzelotny wisi ponad głowami
I ty je wszystkie znasz,
to tak między nami.

(Deszczowy surrealizm to rzecz,
jaką może poszczycić się każdy parasol.)
Tak na marginesie.
Bo koniec był już wyżej.
