I’m sitting around getting my thanksgiving food coma out of the way, then I’m going to go for a long run later, followed by a parkour workout at the playground here in Long Island. It’s gonna be legit, I haven’t figured out exactly what exercises I’m going to incorporate yet, but I’m going to try and move as quickly as I can from one side to the other, up, over and through the playground.

So my friend Mr. Carl Gibbs had to do a project for one of his classes.  Obviously he did hardcore parkour.  This turned out hilarious.  I think he has a career in free running ahead of him.  And the music on the video is Test Your Might by another friend of mine S-Preme.  If you have yet to download his latest mixtape – The Sicktape Vol. 2 – you should do so now.  The link is at the below the video.  Enjoy!

Sicktape Vol. 2

It has literally just turned today as I write this. Considering what I have to talk about, it is a wonderfully ironic coincidence.

As a fairly new practitioner of Parkour, I am still developing how I view Parkour in my life. For many, Parkour is no more than a regular or even occasional activity. But for others, including some of the first and the best Traceurs, it is a lifestyle, a philosophy that drives them; that extends to encompass every area of their lives.

Parkour as an activity is not so complicated. By itself, it can be broken down into some core techniques that can be learned, performed, and moved on from within a relatively short space of tiem.

I view Parkour as more than an activity, though. Parkour, for me, is a philosophy in development. If you ask me what Parkour is, I could easily give you a run-of-the-mill answer, a generalization based on what is generally accepted within the community. But if you ask be what Parkour means to me, I would have a hard time pinning it down for you.

Given that today, (or yesterday rather) marks the first day of my first serious training regimen, not just for physical fitness, but in behavior, thoughts, and spiritual growth, I think the time has come to fully explore what Parkour means to me. You are more than welcome to come along for the ride if you want. I won’t say any more now, because it is now ten minutes after today and my bedtime was yesterday. But stay tuned, and maybe both of us will discover something new about ourselves along the way.

(And yes, I do actually hand write most of my posts before actually blogging them, so don’t think you are being lied to.)

As an update, I am going to release something of an outline of of what I am going to be discussing later today, and after I write the posts I will link them to this page for the reader’s convenience.

Went for a run today in memorial park with Charles and Travis, we ran “the loop”. Apparently its a 3.3 mile loop and it’s something that I had never done before, it was a beautiful day for it and there were lots of people/dogs out running as well. I decided to run it in my Vibram five fingers, they felt great during the run! No comment on how the feet are feeling now…

Almost forgot our time was 25:39, we started out at about a 10min/mile pace and slowly increased it, probably finished the last mile in about 7 mins. according to our estimates. I was reminiscing earlier how the last time I ran a 5k was 7  years ago in Albany, NY for a Susan G. Komen run. My time then was 21:23 and I was dying! Today felt very easy in comparison, granted I was running faster 7 years ago, however I think we could have picked up our pace significantly and probably bested that time easily thanks to CrossFit! Shameless plug…I know. Amazingly enough I found the PDF file from that fateful day 7 years ago in Albany, NY on google!! Linked here! If you scroll down you will see this… yeah I came in 96th out of almost 1400, sweet!  A couple friends of mine also ran that race, I’ll post their times too. I think Steve met pukie that day. Sorry Steve.

Procrastination is the fuel for blog posting. I decided to stay up to reset my sleep schedule and to get some work done but I’m too tired to concentrate at this point.. Writing gibberish in a blog is infinitely less destructive than doing so in my paper!

So parkour.. I was dragged along to a class by a friend, and surprisingly, it was ok and kind of fun. You never know how high you can jump until you actually try it, I guess.

The problem is, it takes so much energy to do anything in that class that I’ve only gone to two classes so far… Mostly because I usually don’t feel up to expending that much energy. I think yoga’s still more my speed.

I’ve been monitoring my blog’s stats and I’ve noticed that when it’s in moments of drought (in terms of views) the post that brings in the most traffic is the Domincano post I made early this year. People seemed really interested in the design that I came up with for the Dominicano AF1s. Therefore I’ve decided to come up with a new design for a pair of low top dunks (unless people prefer the AF1 design) . I’ll be selling this pair of dunks on EBAY when they’re done. sandwich shared 3 ways!

I went to Triple Rock Brewery for the first time last Saturday after partaking in a free beginner’s class for parkour (more on that in another entry). It’s a nice place, with a terrace upstairs where we sat with a bunch of other guys from the class.

We shared that plate three ways.. It was a decent amount of food, surprisingly! The ’sandwich’ ended up being more like two huge bruschettas (probably cuz we asked them to cut it three ways), so it was pretty messy (but good).

Ok so while exploring the underworld of sports, I rolled across parkour. Many people have heard of freestyle walking, but this is freestyle running. I guess people got tired of just plain running and decided to throw in some flips and spins. My take on this sport/discipline…Awesome! I have now been inspired to take-on a new hobby; thats right, jumping off of your car or house for fun. That’s how we do it! If you are interested in this, take a look at www.americanparkour.com. They have everything you need to get started.

Action filmmaker and producer Luc Besson has always had an eye for action and having the ability to showcase it in a strange and unusual way. He honed the skills of Jet Li and Jason Statham with glorious success. He even turned his ex-lover Milla Jovovich into a female wrecking machine.

Now Besson hopes to find the next great action star in French sensation David Belle who founded a new form of martial arts called parkour. This new form is basically where the artist attempts to pass obstacles in the fastest and most direct manner possible by running, jumping, climbing, sliding, ducking and so forth.

Co-writer Luc Besson and director Pierre Morel sculpt out a story where an undercover cop (Cyril Raffaelli) must infiltrate one of the nastiest neighborhoods in 2010 Paris. The neighborhood is District 13.

The cop is joined by a convict (David Belle) who will guide him in his pursuit to find a neutron bomb somewhere in the district. But the convict also has an agenda all his own. Don’t they always.

The film’s plot, setup, direction and cinematography leave a lot to be desired. But if they were all state of the art and amazing then I guess we wouldn’t really be able to see what Belle can do with his “parkour”.

The sequences where parkour is focused are amazing and the stunt work flawless. It kind of reminded me a lot of the better Jackie Chan movies. You know where you stop and say to yourself, how do they do that?

The acting in the film reminded me of old “Godzilla” movies or Power Rangers episodes because even though I saw the film with subtitles and in its original French it still looked like it was dubbed and the audio was horrendous.

A-class stunts + lame ass plot = rental. Or at least it does in my books.

I’m thinking quite a lot of people have heard of or seen parkour but what about it’s laid-back cousin, street training? Yes, that’s right, if you are not daring enough to attempt l’art du déplacement then there’s another way you can interact with your surroundings and it’s called street training (what is it called if you become an expert?).

It seems to have started in London and picked up across the pond in none other than Brazil. After seeing a few videos on Youtube, I’m no longer sure it should be called the lazy off-shoot of parkour but rather the chilled-out version of flash mobs…or is it the walking man’s idea of the laying down game? Oh I’m not sure anymore…you crazy kids, you!
