I’ve become particularly interested recently in the increasing number of cases where the outcome of

I’ve become particularly interested recently in the increasing number of cases where the outcome of inspection does not seem to bear out what happens in practice. Here are some examples of what I mean:

The case of Children’s Services In Hackney where inspection ratings prior to the Baby P case had been positive

The case of Basildon Hospital where the inspection report does not appear to have identified some real problems and reflected what was really happening on the ground

The increasing concern about OFSTED reports by the local government association (LGA) and by Directors of Childrens Services

Inspections of local councils under the comprehensive performance assessment regime that resulted in ratings that “poor’ or ‘weak’ councils with examples of good and excellent performance and good practice and vice versa

Increasing signs of concern about the Audit Commission approach being voiced within the LGA

What do we think is going on here?

I wonder whether it is something to do with the methodology and the way that inspections are carried out? The difficulties seem to me to arise from the fact that inspections focus on the ‘professional’ and “organisational” end of the service and not enough on real examples of delivery – what actually happens on the ground.

So what we see often in inspection reports is critiquing and comment about policy, strategy, systems, processes and performance targets and indicators. What we see little of is real commentary about how services are delivered and what it feels like to users and citizens.

Maybe this is at the root of the current problems and concerns? A noticeable policy shift in the way that government, the major political parties and the public sector see the role and involvement of communities in the design and delivery of our public services. Total Place and the comprehensive area assessment (CAA) represent a move away from top down approaches to target setting to a world where partnership, collaboration, the community and the citizen play a pivotal part in designing, procuring and delivering local services within a place.

This signals a real paradigm shift.

So it not just about the policies, strategies, targets and processes. It is what is really happening on the ground, in the streets, in the wards and in families and communities that really matters.

Perhaps the inspection regime has some catching up to do? Unless it is to fall into disrepute, it will need to make that paradigm shift too.

Now what’s next. I should write about my new path. But not yet. I want to write about somet

Now what’s next. I should write about my new path. But not yet. I want to write about something else. I want to go more in depth of how much I lived in a fantasy. I’m not sure you understand the gravity of me living in a fantasy world.

I remember when ever I had any free time or had time to just day dream my thoughts would go straight to fantasizing. It was my hobby. I could write books and books about what I day dreamed. In years how much have I fantasized in my life? I would have to say about five years of my life. That’s if you put every minute that I day dream side by side. I would have spent probably more than five years. But I’m giving you an assumption of how much I would day dream.

I remember during recess time I didn’t play with the kids I would go off on my own and day dream. I would even draw obscene drawings about a man and a women having sex. But with my barbie dolls I would have two barbies having sex with one another. The fantasies ran deep within.

I would fall asleep fantasizing and wake up and add to the imagination. It was if I was living in a never ending day dream and my world was what I had to put up with. I lived in an constant bubble. Not letting reality hit me and not allowing myself to get hurt. It was glass menagerie. My illusion that I was living some what of a reality but stayed in my dreams when anything wrong was going on. Never taking responsibility because I didn’t have to. Especially since I had an older sister and two younger that took up my parents time. I just slipped through the cracks and made it by as well as I could. I remember when I was bored in church I would fantasize there too. I didn’t know any better. It was my reality.

I sometimes wonder if I were to go mad would I slip into one of my fantasies and believe it to be reality? If I would forget my family and think that all the celebrities that I have made love to were my loved ones. How much of me was lost in those daydreams? How much of me was lost to the imagination?

I now live in the real world but I still day dream. I still regress into myself right before falling asleep. It helps keep the monsters at bay. What monsters? This is were I try to combine my Christianity.

When I was younger I would feel like there was some kind of presence in my room. I never knew if it was safe or if it was some presence that shouldn’t be around. I have always had some kind of spiritual experience. A year hasn’t gone by in my life when I have had some kind of abnormal experience more like supernatural experience happen to me. Now please understand that I believe that I have been redeemed with the blood of Jesus Christ and I have spoken in tongues.

Well that was then. I don’t know about now…

Anyway I have been baptized, I have danced in the spirit, I had a demon casted out of me, and I have spoken in tongues. I have also given someone a tiny prophesy. I know you might think she is crazy. That there is no way that these things could happen to someone but please believe that I am not crazy and I have had these things happen to me. They are real. If you do not believe that their are demons, angels, or that you have been redeemed by the son of God then stop reading altogether. Stop reading because you might not understand or care for the rest of this post.

There are things I cannot not explain that have happened. That I wish I could scientifically explain and give proof but alas I have none of it. All of my life I’ve had people say “If you just let go He can do great things in your life!” If I could go back to them and say “I have let go not in the way you might have wanted it but what now? What happens to this lost child of His? I am even lost? Or was this the plan all along?” I know that Jesus loves us no matter what. But I have had a huge fight with myself wondering if He does love the ones that have decided to become homosexual. Sure sex can be perverted, if you pervert it. But what if two women or two men have sex in love. Two people of the same sex love each other and are faithful, have been with each other for years with no other partner… Does not God consider a partnership between two straight people that have had sex with only one another to be husband and wife? So would they not be a married couple?

For Christians I’m sorry if this may seem blasphemous but do not preach to me what the doctrine says. Come to me with an open heart and try to explain to me what you think… Not what you know or what it says in black and white. Come to me with open arms and minds and answer me that. Answer me what does God do with those who are born one way but in their heart they know its not. But yet myself who has ran and ran from being a lesbian has had all these spiritual experiences. Experiences where I should have been frightened but I have ran into God’s arms and have been covered.

I don’t know what else to say. I don’t know where else to go with this. This has been one heavy post but it was needed to be said. I will elaborate more on another one. But for now I will leave you with that. Take it in. If its too much, than I’m sorry but this is me. I will not apologize for it anymore. Take it or leave it…

XOXO

I’m typing on the kitchen counter at 10:45 on Thanksgiving Evening. We got home about half an hour ago, I’ve unpacked the Ouback from our mini-camping trip to my parents, and you’re upstairs nursing Ella (and now giving her a bath).

I was sort of dreading the tired drive home, but it flew by with the rich conversation we share so often that I sometimes take for granted. Cinnamon rolls are baking, I’ll go upstairs and give you a neck and back massage, and then we’ll take a shower together and go to bed. I am thankful for you and the life we share.

The scriptures say in multiple places that we are to give thanks to the Lord, because his love endures forever. May he help us to continue to do this, and may we our love continue to endure by his strength. We are not thankful to some nebulous non-entity–rather, we are thankful to a loving, holy, and sovereign God who upholds us, and shelters us under his wing. Thank the Lord for you and the faith he has given us to share. I love you.

I am currently reading through Philippians and well it is taking me a while… I can’t hel

I am currently reading through Philippians and well it is taking me a while… I can’t help but read, stop ,and think about what Paul is saying. As I read through Philippians 1:1-11 i cannot help but ask what does Paul teach about Christian Partnership and how does this inform me about my partnership with other Christians?

Paul is greatly encouraged by his partnership with the Philippian Church. A partnership described as:

in the gospel (v5)

partakers with Paul in grace (v7)

partakers through thick and thin (v7)

The Philippians have so greatly encouraged Paul in sticking with him through his imprisonment (see 1:12-14, 4:14-16 cf. Acts 16:12-40) that Paul knows with full assurance the partnership is not give and take, but it is genuine. The genuineness of their partnership is shown in the Philippian’s actions and Paul’s emotions.

Paul is joyous (v4), and filled with affection to see them again (v8). As a result Paul holds them in his heart (v7) drawing him to pray for them and thank God for them.

Which gets me wondering if we ever get so close to our Christian brothers and sisters? And even further do our conversations at Church produce such great partnership?

As I think about this I acknowledge that my conversations with people at church usually consist of ‘how was your week?’ ‘what are you up to this week?’. Not that there is anything wrong with that. But it never seems to get of the ground to discussing anything of great worth.

I am struck by Paul’s prayer:

“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” (Phil 1:9–11 ESV)

I dont often consider the strength of these words.

Do I really try and encourage people to grow in love based on the Gospel so they may bring praise and glory to God? Do I allow my conversations to be based on the Gospel and to encourage people to reflect on the message preached in Church? Do I discuss what I have been challenged with as well as being interested with what they have been challenged with?

How is your Christian Partnership going?

Zimbabwe and South Africa will today sign the long-awaited Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement, a development likely to remove the remaining skepticism potential investors had on the country.

In a statement yesterday, Secretary for Economic Planning and Investment Promotion, Dr Desire Sibanda, said BIPPAs created conducive investment climates.

“Now that the BIPPA will be signed, this will go a long way towards removing the remaining skepticism that potential investors had on Zimbabwe,” he said.

Dr Sibanda said such agreements give confidence to prospective investors as they are assured of doing business without fears of nationalisation.

He said Government recognised the importance of attracting investment as it spurs economic growth.

“South Africa has traditionally been our major trading partner since the 1980s. However, this trend is likely to change once the BIPPA with South Africa is signed. This has the potential to unlock the dormant value for the South Africans to invest in a big way,” Dr Sibanda said.

Last year, South Africa exported goods worth US$1,7 million to Zimbabwe, while the country’s exports to that country were valued at US$759 000.

Yesterday, Dr Sibanda said the ministry planned to carry out investment road shows in South Africa, China, Europe, Australia and Americas to promote investment opportunities in Zimbabwe.

I had a thought earlier today. Being alone again… there’s nobody to tell me, “Mary, that’s a dumb idea.” Not that John ever quite said it that way or ever treated me like that– I’m a little more blunt.

But at the same time there’s nobody to tell me “Mary, that’s a dumb idea.”

With John it was more the gentle reminders that I needed to get some sleep. Or “did you feed the horses yet?” (which by the way, I haven’t yet). Or “we need to remember to…” Or the “what do you think about…” Or “don’t forget to…”

Confiding in a soul-mate and sharing a partnership together are some of the things I miss the most. I miss them everyday, but I miss them most when it comes to matters of Nathaniel. I don’t want to be the person that decides if it is safe for him to get vaccinated for H1N1 of if it is dangerous for him not to get it. (He has gotten his first shot and is scheduled for dose number two.) I want to be one of two parents who decides together how to best raise their child. You know the way it ideally is… in a perfect world. But, in a perfect world your beloved spouse doesn’t die of cancer at 35…

Everything is now my decision to make- for wrong of for right. In a way it’s nice to know that there won’t be any conflict in parental matters- it’s my way or the highway. (Practicing for the teenage years.) I can do things that I want to do- if I want to go take Nathaniel somewhere, I just do it. No, “not now… maybe later”… “I’m tired…” or “I don’t feel like it,” or “why don’t you just go (aka I’m not interested and don’t want to join you).” I’m tired of learning things the hard way. Hoping I’ll be making more right decisions, but I’m fully aware that I’ll make wrong ones too.

All that being said, I think I’m doing mostly okay on my own. I ask for opinions when I need them and make my own decisions. I’m pretty good at researching and collecting data. I’m an adult and quite capable of making my own decisions. I just wish John was still here to help me make up my mind.

GE Trade Event is a seminar co-organised by GE in Vietnam and Hai Phong People’s Committee. The seminar will discuss GE’s innovative solutions along with previous success stories and anecdotes. GE reaffirmed its long tradition of expertise and strength and desire to become a potential partner to all Vietnam enterprises, operating in such various fields as Energy, Health, Water Processing, Industrial power and lighting, and Oil and Gas.

The event was inaugurated by representatives from Hai Phong’s various competent authorities and other company partners and customers. Through an interactive and informative seminar for both GE and Hai Phong’s enterprises, hundreds of GE’s local partners and customers have direct access to GE’s comprehensive package of innovative products and solutions that are highly practical and fundamental to the economic development of Vietnam.

President of GE in ASEAN, Mr. Stuart Dean said enthusiastically, “I am very happy to be here today, feeling inspired by Hai Phong’s economic development and success. GE hopes that sharing ideas and innovative products and services through this event will create customers and give partners access to GE initiatives and technologies that are effectively and successfully applied to business. We would always like to contribute to the sustainable development of Vietnam, in general and promote strong economic growth in such prominent cities as Hai Phong, in particular.”

Representatives from GE’s five key businesses, including: GE Energy, GE Oil & Gas, GE Consumer & Industrial, GE Health Care and GE Water & Process Technologies, gave presentations to customers and partners with which, GE Energy showcased a strong portfolio of technologies, that meet most of the requirements of Vietnam’s speedy rising energy industry, from traditional technologies such as of the steam turbine to cutting-edge new technologies like the combined cycle-gas turbine, or solutions using renewable resources like wind, solar and biogas. GE Energy also updated the building process of the first USD 61 million GE facility which will produce wind turbines in the Nomura Industrial Zone in Hai Phong. GE Oil & Gas and GE Water & Process Technologies introduced the most advanced and environmentally friendly technologies which are now solving problems of several high-profile industrial projects in Vietnam. At this seminar, GE Health Care committed to continue bringing to the market state-of-the-art medical equipment, helping improve efficiency of medical diagnostics and treatment in Vietnam’s hospitals. GE Consumer & Industrial recommended to customers various equipment which is environmentally friendly, safe-to-use and which conserve energy.

“The seminar not only provided comprehensive and accurate information about GE’s products and services but also gave future customers an overview of the operating processes of each GE business unit, so that, they can understand rights, conditions, and responsibilities when becoming a long-term partner of GE, cooperating for Hai Phong’s development in particular and the northern economic area of Vietnam in general,” Mr. Dean added.

Ms. Nguyen My Lan, President of GE in Vietnam said, “With Hai Phong’s convenient geographic position for smooth connection between domestic and international trade and ideal destination for foreign investors, expanding business to Hai Phong is our strategic decision in order to share the advantages of this seaport city with our potential customers and partners. We will together take the most advantage of GE’s technologies, products and services in Vietnam as well as in every country GE is operating.”

The GE Trade Event “Innovative solutions for Partnership & Growth” is a milestone in the relationship between GE and enterprises in Hai Phong and the surrounding provinces. This is a chance for GE to affirm strong relationships with long-term partners and to discover new and potential cooperative opportunities.

On this occasion, GE Energy also awarded five scholarships each USD1,000 per school year, for outstanding students of Hai Phong private university(2 scholarships), Hai Phong polytechnic vocational training college (1 scholarship), and Hai Phong central vocational training for transport and communications college II (1 scholarship). This scholarship program is specially designed for students from second-year and above who are underprivileged and achieve good study results. Every year, based on student scores, GE will decide whether to continue awarding the scholarships. The students who achieve scholarships will also have the chance to intern at GE Energy’s factory in Hai Phong and eventually take full-time positions with the company.

Founded in 1995, pioneer of the digital inclusion movement in Latin America, CDI (Center for Digital Inclusion) is one of the leading social enterprises in the world with a unique socio-educational approach. CDI Founder and Ashoka Fellow Rodrigo Baggio and our work at CDI have been recognized with more than 60 international awards. Today, we are a network of 753 self-managed and self-sustaining CDI Community Centers throughout Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay – monitored and coordinated by our 31 regional offices.

In addition to low-income communities, our schools are also present in indigenous communities, psychiatric clinics, hospitals for the mentally and physically disabled, as well as youth & adult detention facilities. CDI is an international NGO with US 501c3 status, headquartered in Rio de Janeiro. CDI has operations in the USA, UK, and and Latin America. With the support of James Wolfensohn, former President of the World Bank and the Wolfensohn Institute, CDI is in the process of expanding to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, to be followed by India and other parts of Africa. (CDI Global)

THE PROBLEM

“Computers and computer-based communications and information systems are opening up new opportunities in virtually every field of human endeavor. Distances of many kinds are being erased, and the “global village” is becoming more of a reality with each passing day. In education, in the workplace, and in many leisure pursuits, the computer embodies the fundamental difference between yesterday and today.

Unfortunately, however, the benefits of this remarkable tool are not being evenly shared. In countries like Brazil, where poverty is widespread and public education systems are extremely deficient, both the high cost of computer hardware and limited opportunities for training in computer skills deny access to those benefits to most people of modest economic means. As a result, in several important respects the gulf between the “haves” and the “have-nots” is widening, and with that widening, the opportunities open to economically disadvantaged groups are correspondingly curtailed.

The essence of the challenge that Rodrigo and his colleagues are addressing, therefore, is the urgent need to broaden access to computer and information science skills and, through those skills, to improve economic opportunities and more fruitful participation in virtually every dimension of modern life. The campaign in which Rodrigo and his associates are engaged is at the forefront of the continuing battle for social justice. It is also of central relevance for the future of democratic governance in Brazil.” (Ashoka.org)

THE SOLUTION

“We use knowledge to stimulate local economic development and job creation. Technology is one of the most powerful catalysts of change at hand today. But technology, in itself, is just a tool. The true challenge is making technology relevant and useful in the context of marginalized populations. For 14 years CDI has empowered disadvantaged groups to use Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs) as tools to exercise their full capacities as citizens and tackle the issues that affect their communities. CDI Community Centers are technology and learning centers in impoverished communities. Each CDI Community Center is a partnership with an existing leading grassroots organization. The community based organizations provide the infrastructure and CDI provides free computers and software, implements educational methods, trains instructors and monitors the schools.” (Ashoka)

THE RELEVANCE

“The Committee for Democracy in Information Technology, founded by Baggio, was chosen as one of the world’s top three Principal Voices in the field of Economic Development. (Ashoka Fellow)

THE SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR

This Thanksgiving week I am taking extra time to be more grateful for what I have in my life and car

This Thanksgiving week I am taking extra time to be more grateful for what I have in my life and career. I am also working on improving positivity and being conscious of any type of cynical attitude or approach I may have. Last week I became more aware of cynicism and its negative effects through reading a post called The Scourge of Cynicism in Michael Hyat’s Blog, Leading With a Purpose. He begins the blog with, “It (cynicism) is like cancer to the human soul. It is especially deadly when it affects an organization.” Hyatt goes on to define cynic and cynical as well as pointing out three symptoms of being infected – 1) Distrust of others’ motives, 2) Commenting negatively about others, and 3) Pessimism about the future. You can read the full blog post here http://michaelhyatt.com/2007/04/the-scourge-of-cynicism.html.

Hyat says we all have some cynic in us. We need to be conscious of it and also help others who exhibit the symptoms. After reading his post and heading into this week focused on giving thanks, I determined to evaluate any of my behaviors that may be symptomatic and then set the example for others. My focus areas lie in the last two symptoms – being more positive about others, and the future. I encourage you to take time to evaluate any areas of cynicism in your life and then spend time during the next couple of days being conscious of your behaviors. Do you engage in negative conversations about others? Do you just stand by when someone else speaks negatively of another person? Do you believe in the good of people and their motives? When you talk to others about the future, is it mostly positive or negative? Then, take a couple of days to listen to other people. You will likely notice some cynicism. Hopefully it will be less apparent this week, so maybe the listening should begin next week. It’s good to perform this exercise because it heightens your awareness. As a leader, you can make a difference by first setting the example, and then later coaching others. But remember, you can’t ask others to do something you will not do yourself.

Finally, be appreciative each day. Every day my alma mater, Notre Dame, sends me a motivational tip. Recently, the tip suggested taking time at the end of each day to write 10 things for which I am thankful. The tip went on to contend that by doing this, I would naturally become more positive and grateful for all that I have in my life and career.

Here is my list for today and Thanksgiving. Since this is a work blog, I am gearing this somewhat towards work related thoughts.

1. My family – spouse and 4 children as well as extended family.

2. The entire Cameron-Brooks team. They might as well be up there with family since I spend so much time with them.

3. Cameron-Brooks client companies who value the Junior Military Officer (JMO) candidate, Cameron-Brooks and our services.

4. The wonderful and talented JMO candidates who partner with Cameron-Brooks and put their trust and faith in our services and team.

5. For the men and women who have served, and those who serve today in our Armed Forces defending our freedom and democracy. Remember, “Freedom is not free.”

6. For spouses who put their careers and lives on hold while their military spouses deploy, and provide outstanding support for their family and other military families.

7. The opportunity to work in a career where I truly enjoy my work and see the value of what I contribute.

8. The ability and desire to learn.

9. Friends, mentors and co-workers who genuinely care about my career and provide me with counsel and guidance.

10. Short work week this week, and a four-day weekend coming up!

Leaders are optimists. Be aware of cynicism, find time to be thankful, and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

LinkedIn is hoping to let its users tap into their professional network across the Web. On Monday, L

LinkedIn is hoping to let its users tap into their professional network across the Web.

On Monday, LinkedIn will make its technology available to software developers who want to use it in their own sites and applications. By incorporating information about someone’s professional profile and connections, LinkedIn can make those sites more useful, said Adam Nash, LinkedIn’s vice president of search and platform products.

Jeff Weiner, LinkedIn’s chief executive, has said he wants the site to be the hub of all conversations about business on the Web. LinkedIn’s recent partnership with Twitter was one step in that direction, and this is another. As more businesses use Web-based applications for professional communication, LinkedIn wants to be there, Mr. Nash said.

A few developers have already been experimenting with LinkedIn’s new platform. Microsoft is integrating LinkedIn into its 2010 version of Outlook e-mail. TweetDeck, the Web-based Twitter application, will let people do things like view other Twitter users’ LinkedIn profiles and post and reply to LinkedIn updates from TweetDeck.

LinkedIn has let some companies build applications on its Web site. Amazon.com, for example, shows LinkedIn users which books others in their professional network are reading and lets users post a list of recommended books.

LinkedIn has also let some developers create applications for other Web sites using its technology on a case-by-case basis. Xobni, the Outlook e-mail plug-in, pulls photos and titles from LinkedIn, for example. The New York Times Web site offers readers who are also LinkedIn members a list of articles that pertain to their industry.

“We tried to use each of those partnerships to figure out, where can LinkedIn add the most value to how you use business applications?” Mr. Nash said. “What we see happening is an increasing demand for business applications, and we think that LinkedIn uniquely has the right quality of content.”

Google and Tivo have formed a partnership to for Google to have access to Tivo’s user data. Google, will get paid ad revenue when advertisers ad is seen. However, Tivo allows users to fast foward through commercials. Having access to Tivo’s data, Google will be able to tell which ads are being bypassed. Therefore, if all ads are being bypassed, Tivo will not get any revenue.

The deal is similar to the deal that Google already has with Echostar. Ecostar provides ads to show on Dish Network. Google is making it easier than ever to have ads online their adwords system and or having ads on tv. The agreement is likely to increase revenue for both parties as advertisers are seeking new ways to reach their customers.

I didn’t get married until the age of 41. I told family and friends that I was just waiting for the guy brave enough to take that step. One of my friends joked in reply that what I was really waiting for was a guy that was a better man than I was. Given that he was looking for a better woman than he was, it made sense.

There are advantages to getting married at a later age than most. I had college behind me, was well-established in my administrative career, owned my car, had decent furniture, and most of the other stuff people acquire to make their homes and lives a little easier. I’d been an independent adult for over twenty years, making my own life decisions, handling my own money, going when I wanted to go, eating what I wanted to eat, and playing when I wanted to play.

And, ironically, that same independence can be somewhat disadvantageous once you’re married. Now I was in a partnership, with an individual who was just as independent, just as established in his career, had just as much stuff, and was just as stubborn as I was. Thankfully, we were on the same page with most things, and we quickly came to the decision that we were just going to have a yours, mine and ours kind of arrangement. We each kept our individual bank accounts, credit cards, cars, and stuff, while opening joint accounts for the household. Things that were going to benefit both of us, like the house payment, groceries, utilities, etc., would be paid from the household account. Items that would only benefit or be used by one person would be paid by that person. So, when he wants to buy more tools for his workshop, he dips into his personal account. When I want to buy more silk embroidery floss for my next needlework project, that’s on me. We each contribute a set amount into the household account every month. Given that I was bringing in about 60% of the joint income, my contribution to the household was slightly larger than his, but still giving both of us plenty of left over cash to play with. This arrangement worked amazingly well, until that fateful day in April.

So now I’m on unemployment, which nets significantly less than that nice regular paycheck. Every penny the state sends me gets put into the household account, because our budget was based on the working income. The hubby, I think a little to his chagrin, can not support the entire household just on his income. Much like so many other Americans these days. Unfortunately, what I get on unemployment isn’t quite up to the level I was contributing while working, so the household belt has tightened to a dangerously thin point. After years of just being able to pay the bills without really worrying, going out to dinner if we wanted, buying something for the house if we liked it, we are now back to being serious jugglers and tap dancers. The holidays are looking especially bleak.

And that’s when I noticed that damn box. The first wall went up when I lost the job – no big deal, just go around. The second wall went up when the depression came crashing back with a blinding force of will – okay, we can still manage, with a little guidance from the counselor. The third wall went up when I no longer had my own money. That was a tough one – I could no longer buy things when I wanted to. I couldn’t pay my credit card bills, couldn’t buy lunch out if I was running errands, couldn’t even get my husband an anniversary card. I was having to ask him for permission to use household funds to pay for my personal bills. Did not like that at all.

Okay, so I still have one way out. I don’t have to be in a box. But then the car registration showed up. Our lovely three-year-old truck was going to cost us nearly 25% more to register this year than last year. Welcome to California, now give us all your money. Money we don’t have, if we want to still pay the house payment. And that was one of the life lessons drilled into both of us from an early age: ALWAYS PAY YOUR HOUSING COSTS!!! Don’t pass go, don’t buy lotto tickets, don’t buy cigarettes, booze or even food, if it means not paying the house payment or the rent. That leaves only one option, unless I have a rich uncle who’s died and left me a large inheritance: we have to PNO the truck. That means the truck sits in the drive way and goes no where else until we can get the regular registration. That means I have no vehicle while my husband is at work. That means careful planning if I need to go somewhere, because public transit in our area ain’t what it should be. There’s always the bicycle, but I’d have to shell out some money to repair it. So after over two decades of vehicular independence, I’m stuck.

The weird thing is, I’m a bit agoraphobic and really don’t like leaving the house if I don’t have to. But it really hit me when I realized I just seen that last wall drop. No job, no money, no car, and no way out. I was now completely dependent on someone else to take care of me, for the first time since I was a child. Much as I love, trust and cherish my husband, much as he does his best to be supportive, understanding and sympathetic, I just couldn’t deal with the idea of being so vulnerable. Too many years of taking care of myself, making my own money, handling my own affairs, without having to ask anybody else’s permission. In short, I freaked.

So here I am, sitting at the bottom of this big ol’ box of trouble, my eyes blood shot and stinging from the panicked crying, my head hurting from banging it against the walls, my nails bloodied from digging at the floor, wondering if I could braid my hair into a long enough rope to get my butt out of here. I still have my brain and my Gerber multi-tool. I just might be able to reach the top…

If you’re looking for a ‘get rich quick’ scheme then you’re in the wrong place. If your primary mission is to become a millionaire then you may want to step back a moment.

By all means have this as a personal goal or an objective, but as a mission? This organisation has an objective to create 100 millionaires by 2012, but its mission is at a different level.

The way you set out to achieve success, and what you want to do as a result of that success are worth considering.

For example, a great way to get people on your side is to give before you receive. An approach that attracts prospects towards your offer is much more appropriate and successful these days than a pushy sales pitch.

Similarly, you’ve probably heard the saying; “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Our mission is the latter; to teach people how to market online, to start and run a business and to manage and grow their wealth. Along the way we may sell a fishing rod and net, but teaching folks how to use them is provided as part of the package.

If you’re prepared to give as well as to receive, then click here, enter your contact details and get your voyage underway.

Part 1, part 2, part 3

Marriage is a microcosm of human society. A key aspect of this micro level is headship in marriage.

In Ephesians 5, Paul explains headship in marriage in a pretty straightforward way. He recasts the traditional authority of the husband to reflect the way that God upends human authority. He says, ‘Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her’. What a radical statement!

Let’s get a few things straight, though. So often, our ideas of headship remain attached to our own human notions of authority. I see one of the biggest confusions about headship in the word ‘leadership’, which some Christians use more or less interchangeably with ‘headship’. For example, Mark Driscoll tends to reduce headship to decision making, so that the head is simply the one who calls the shots. This is off the mark.

Headship does involve being responsible and taking initiative — but remember, these are not our human ideas. God has subverted these things in Christ. Headship is being responsible for serving. Headship is taking the initiative in sacrificing.

I use the word initiative deliberately: it captures the idea that, as in the Garden, there is someone who is given the opportunity to start things off and make the first move — just as God did with us in Christ. This means that headship is not about authority or even about being first. It is about being the first to serve. Being a real husband means being the one who takes the initiative to love his woman, giving up his life for her. Being the head in a marriage means being the sacrificial servant who loves his wife so radically that he gives up every desire and ambition and even his own self all for her service. And to lose your self like that, of course, means you need to know yourself and be dealing with your insecurities. Maybe we could say there’s a sense of leadership there, but it is profoundly opposed to our human ideas.

Throughout this mini series, I’ve been exploring things in terms of two different groups of guys. One group needs to see that headship is a very active thing. This may be your problem because you’re insecure, or it may be your problem because you’re hyper-individualistic. Either way, to just follow along with your wife or to leave her to tick along by herself is exactly the way not to love her. When you switch off, that undoes her trust and disempowers her. Our wives are our equal partners, so manning up means teaming up. Each of you have a corresponding part to play. You have an equal partnership, but it’s an equal partnership. You empower your wife by partnering with her. Only when you see that you are bound together as partners will you be able to give up your life for her.

Other men have a different problem. Some of us are so caught up in being ‘active’ and propping up our own insecure machismo that we’re fixated on authority. We think that real men assert themselves, tell their wives what to do and ‘keep their women in line’. If that’s you, you have completely missed the point that headship is about service and sacrifice. You have simply copied the traditional authority of a husband, which grasps at power and control, always reflecting the fall. A man who needs to control his woman is a weak, fake man. Strong, real men are big enough to love and empower their wives in every way. Remember the Bible’s ultimate anti-patriarchal statement: Christ did not grasp power but made himself nothing. You have an equal partnership, but it’s an equal partnership. Your wife is your counterpart, so start caring for her. Then, perhaps, you might even begin to sacrifice yourself for her, as God commands you to.

The bottom line is this: the measure of a husband is not how well his wife submits but how well he serves her.
