You say I am repeating
Something I have said before. I shall say it again.
Shall I say it again? In order to arrive there,
To arrive where you are, to get from where you are not,
You must go by a way wherein there is no ecstasy.
In order to arrive at what you do not know
You must go by a way which is the way of ignorance.
In order to possess what you do not possess
You must go by the way of dispossession.
In order to arrive at what you are not
You must go through the way in which you are not.
And what you do not know is the only thing you know
And what you own is what you do not own
And where you are is where you are not.

-T.S. Eliot, “East Coker” from the “Four Quartets”

Christmas is the celebration of new birth. For the last few days I have been reading the Grail legend, the archetypal human tale about Parzival, the tale that Joseph Campbell (The Power of Myth) says is “the founding Myth of Western civilization” because it teaches that each of us must find our way to enlightenment, to the new birth within ourselves. What better story to go with the my own Christian tradition that involves three wise men and a baby born under a starry sky, like those we see so often in these bright heavenly nights, in this land between rivers, which merge in the sea.

The Legend of the Grail, it is a mystery that will never fail to intrigue mankind, and in particular

The Legend of the Grail, it is a mystery that will never fail to intrigue mankind, and in particular those sensible souls who meditate on this tale, because it’s place doesn’t belong to a particular age, or to a Geographical place, but goes beyond the intellect to that Sacred place, that independently of location, or time belong to every Human Being; his Heart.

Therefore it will be useless to try to fit this Mystical tale in an Historical fact based context, like many writers have done in the past, however we can examine some of it’s origins.

The word Grail come from old Meridional France from the word graalz, Provencal grazal, ancient Catalan gradalis, gradalus, a sort of vase.

We can trace it’s story to the end of the XII century to three novels that had become famous: Le Conte Du Graal (Perceval li Gallois) from Chretien de Troyes, Romanz De L’estorie Dou Graal from Robert de Boron, and Parzival from Wolfram Von Eschenbach.

The story of the Grail represents the Visio Dei (God Vision) it is not the vision of man of God, but God’s vision of Himself in man, this ancient Tradition, is at the base in the Western World to the Imago Dei developed by William de San Thierry and the Cistercian school based in the Greek Fathers of the III and IV century, this doctrine is nothing but the direct knowledge of God and his Verb, as an experiential reality, rather than a mere intellectual speculation. This doctrine it is also at the base of the Pseudo Dionysus, and his followers, Master Eckhart, and Nicholas of Cusa, and many other Gnostics.

His Metaphysical foundation it’s the Transcendental Intellect, or as the modern Philosopher, and Theologian Henry Corbin named; The Mundus Imaginalis based on his studies on the Sheik Al-Akbar, the Spanish, Arab Mystic Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi. (1165-1240)

The vessel that Jesus used in order to serve the wine at the Last Supper to his Disciples, the Holly Chalice is considered to be this Holly Grail, in the stories, this Grail is the centerpiece where the Eucharist represent the Divine Sacrament of Communion.

The Transfiguration represented by the Wine, and the Bread in to the blood, and Flesh of Christ, it is the key to the understanding of a direct Communion, or transcendental Union between God and Man, this ancient ritual is first encountered in the Bible in Genesis XIV 18-20

Then Melchizedek King of Salem brought bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of Heaven and Earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies in to your hand.” And he gave him a thite of all.

It was understood that the Chalice used by Christ Himself would hold properties, and virtues derived of this fact, sort of an Original, and Primordial magnitude that would give the seeker not only a Symbolic ritual, but the secret of the Eternal Life, a Lapis Exillis (Stone of the Philosopher) type of qualities.

The search for the Grail represents the goal of the Spiritual seeker of an Unio Mystica, a goal that is open to the Men, and Women of all times.

But let’s examine some of the key passages of this Myth; Perceval in his first adventure he finds the Fisher King in his Magic Castle Corbenic a place of wanders, the King is wounded, affecting this not only him, but his Kingdom as well, Perceval is witness to some strange things he can’t figure out, like a young man carrying a bleeding lance, and others carrying candelabras, finally a beautiful maiden appears bearing the Grail, where a single wafer keeps the King alive, failing to understand the riddle, and talking too much after been warned to keep silent, he wakes up the next day alone in the forest, everything being more like a dream, the castle and the King gone.

Now this Myth it is similar to many other ones in different ages, at different places, and with another narrative, however the Schema, or Archetype in the stories is the existence of a secret realm that it is not reached through normal means, like traveling and going there, but part of an Esoteric Geography of the Soul.

This involves leaving oneself to reach the Truth Self, but between the two, a great event will have change everything; the Self that is found in this Marvelous place, it is the Self that waits beyond ordinary reality, and only can be witness when our Heart functions as the Grail; a receptacle to the Divine…

But who is this Melchizedek that appears out of nowhere to Bless Abram?

He is Khezr, or Khadir in the Muslim Tradition, Elijah in the Jewish Tradition, or St. George in the Christian, or any like Him in any other one, the mysterious Saint, the eternal wanderer, the one who has bathed in the in the Spring of Life and found True Reality, in the Land of Darkness, flowers and herbs spring in its wake, He also appears in the desert in a place where a giant rock divide two Oceans…

In the Koran, XVIII 60-82 Moses go looking for Instruction to the place where the two Oceans meet in search of Khezr.

There is some controversy about who Melchizedek really is, and what relationship has with Jesus, some note the similitude, like both are Kings of Righteousness, and Peace, High Priest, Eternal, and Pre-Existent, Anointed Ones, And the Ritual of the Bread and Wine. In Heb.7.3 we read:

“Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the son of God he remain a priest for ever.”

We do not want to enter in that controversy, but would like to point out that in Heb. 6.20 we read, that Jesus, having become a High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. In other words he didn’t require to have a Levite background, or any other known affiliation, but from the direct Priesthood established by God Himself!

It is also important to notice that in the Gospel of John 1.27,31, 33 John the Baptist, claims:

“He it is, who cometh after me is preferred before me whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.”

“I knew Him not”

This is to mean Jesus didn’t belong to a terrestrial established priesthood, or tradition, but to a Celestial one, the Melchizedek Order, which John didn’t belong to, but Jesus did.

In this way the Grail Order does not have a terrestrial origin, but a celestial one, since it didn’t belong to the Church under the control of the Papacy at the time. But to the Order of Melchizedek, or whatever name you want to name it according to a particular Tradition, like Khezr who appear in the desert with water and Initiation for the masterless ones, or the Hidden Imam who vanished in to a cave in the desert, or any one who lives beyond the Barzakh Isthmus of Similitude in the midst of the sea of images, in an Island of Emerald, with trees made out of precious jewels, flowers of Beryl, Palaces of Jasper, and Jade, or the young man dressed in black who appears to alchemist in dreams, and Initiates them in dreams. The ones who come beyond the Mountain of Qaf, the place of departure that you arrive there again.

The encounter with the Theophanic person imply always a return to the “Axis Mundis” the Center of the World, the Magic Mountain, the Tree, or the Fountain of Life, The Secret Cave, the Origin of the World the Alam Al-Khayal the World of Imagination, or the Alam Al-Mithal the World of Similitude.

So, as to how do we find the Grail?

It will be necessary to first find Khezr, or Elijah, and like him bath in the Spring of Life.

He who has found the meaning of True Reality has arrived at that Spring, when you emerge from the Spring of the Eternal Life, then you also will be like Khezr.

Yesterday was absolutely fantabulous. I managed to get myself and G signed up for double shift at our place of employ, which resulted in a nine and a half hour work day. There were upsides however: working that late meant we got all the drunk partiers and the stoners coming in for pizza. Joy. Also, G and I managed to get relegated to the back thanks to our incredible ingenuity, and we only had to make pizzas with a friend from our dorm and talk about Disney and musicals rather than deal with the morons out front (and I speak both of our coworkers and our customers.)

So after this wonderful fiasco that ended with me falling in bed around 4:30, I got to sleep in until 1:39. How do I know that exact time? Because I checked a clock upon awaking. Then we ate a late LATE lunch and I returned home to do homework. Which did NOT happen. I ended up trying to catch up with “Dancing With the Stars” until G and T joined me in my room and T fell asleep on my bed. Then we went to dinner with another friend and that was fun, except one again the concept of homework failed miserably.

From there, we continued to a sketch comedy show in which a brother/sister pair I knew from high school were involved. I have to admit, that was hilarious. The top three were definitely the skit where the one black kid shamed the others with his enormous black dick, two poke trainers battled it out with a sorority girl and Ash in which the battle was only won after Ash showcased his goofy dance moves and the condom in his wallet, and frat boys from Delta Beta Gamma Alpha (Dbags) initiating a pledge with stories of cousin-sex, roofies, and gay love. Sounds hilarious, I know, but it was even funnier in person. I had a great time.

So then we returned to the dorm in time for me to complete a piece of homework (the second of the day after reading Parzival) and I am now concurrently writing this entry while also talking to a stranger on omegle. Omegle is interesting purely because you can be as brave as you want because you’re completely unknown, can be as much of an ass as you want or have meangingful conversations. G and I prefer being dicks to being nice. But then again, sometimes a relaxing anonymous conversation is just what’s needed. Maybe.

Tomorrow I have to sit my butt down with a two-ton Spanish assignment before going to work at 6. I think this is the weekend when I’m going to fall behind again, purely because if I have to work, I feel like I have to get my relaxation time in because otherwise I would just be working and doing homework. So I do whatever I want even though I know I should get some homework done. I just know that tomorrow is going to be dedicated to the languages though, since that is the majority of my homework always. And I’m thinking of adding a third and maybe a fourth!? Am I crazy?! Yes, a little.

And I promise I will try to post at least once a day again, because I keep falling behind. Really must stop that nonsense right now.

I just finished reading Parzival, The Quest of the Grail Knight (originally written around 1200, retold by Katherine Paterson) to my kids. (Warning: spoilers)

Parzival was a great knight, but had been given the advice to not ask so many questions because it made him appear to be a simpleton. So one day he was at a castle where there was great sickness and sorrow, but, earnestly remembering the advice, did not ask what was wrong, though he desperately wanted to know. Because he did not show compassion and ask what was wrong, the spell was not broken and their suffering continued. He was cursed by all, and, though still undefeated by any challengers, wandered the world miserably for four years, a failure. He cursed God and wanted to die.

When he finally realized what he was supposed to do, he returned to the castle and asked the question, breaking the spell, and lived happily ever after.

We discussed the story afterwards, and realized that for all his strength and skill as a knight, it was compassion that was the trait that mattered most. We also realized that sometimes we get advice that isn’t so great, or that we misunderstand, and that we should follow our hearts and think for ourselves.

By coincidence, my son and I are reading The Dharma of Star Wars by Matthew Bortolin, in which the author explains that at the end of Return of the Jedi, Luke has been told by Obi-Wan and Yoda that he must kill his father or the Emperor will win, and is told by the Emperor that if he kills Darth Vader, he will have turned to the dark side and be under the Emperor’s power. Luke sees another path, that of compassion. He sees the good in his father and throws aside his lightsaber, refusing to fight him. All his strength, fancy footwork, and lightsaber training are for nothing when it comes to the pivotal moment of his life. He throws off the advice he was given by those he trusted most and follows his heart, thereby saving the galaxy.

Any one of us could have done these things. No Force training, no Yoda or Obi-Wan, no midichlorians, no lightsaber, no bulgy muscles were necessary, nor was the ability to fly a fighter jet ludicrously fast. You don’t have to know how to joust or look good in armor. All that was needed, by both Luke and Parzival, was to let loose the compassion that is within all of us.

It’s true that these are just stories, written by someone. Neither one of these heroes actually saved anyone with their compassion in reality. But these stories endure because they resonate with us; they tell us something important about ourselves, about what we believe in, about what we aspire to. What kind of world would we live in if, when the going got tough, the tough got compassionate? What if instead of being afraid to help someone on the street in need because everyone else was stepping over him, we were to follow our heart and the values we think are important?

Because I only post things here that relate to what I eat, of course I have a food angle for this. What if we ignored the babble we hear about farm animals? “Cows are so stupid, they deserve to be eaten.” “I don’t feel sorry for turkeys – they’re dumb.” Pigs are fat/dirty/lazy. “Beef: It’s what’s for dinner.” Dairy makes strong bones. Are you getting enough protein?

We hear all this junk from people and institutions we trust, or we absorb it without question. What if we ignored the ads, the USDA, the farmers, friends, teachers, and our mothers, and, in the face of the incredible suffering inflicted on our fellows, simply did what we felt was right? What if we found our compassion deep within, and unleashed it?

Pastiche Der Nibelungen.

BEYOND DAN BROWN: The DeVinci Load.

The so-called Holy Grail is the object of legendary quest for Arthurian knights and may be a “wide-mouthed or shallow vessel,” although its precise etymology (in the true literal sense of the word) remains uncertain, and small wonder.

The Grail was probably inspired by classical or Celtic mythologies, which abound in horns of plenty, magic life-restoring caldrons, and the like. In Finland, the pre-Christian Kalevala features the sampo, which might be a pillar that holds up the sky, or a mill to produce salt, meal and gold, or a talisman of happiness and prosperity. Take your pick.

The first extant text (or more aptly invention) about the Grail is Chrétien de Troyes’ late 12th century unfinished romance Parceval or Le Conte du Graal, which combined the religious with the fantastic. In the 13th century Robert de Borron’s poem extended the Christian significance of the legend, linking the Grail with Christ’s cup at the Last Supper and with Joseph of Aramea whom he said used it to catch Jesus’ blood as he hung on the cross. In the same century, Wolfram von Esenbach’s Parzival gave the Grail profound and mystical expression as a precious stone fallen from Heaven (sampo, anyone?). Malory’s late 15th century Le Morte D’Arthur transmitted the fanciful Grail essence to English-speaking readers.

In the story-telling invention, the quest itself became a search for mystical union with God. Through various permutations by many different writers over several hundreds of years, the Grail theme formed a culminating point for the Arthurian romance. It’s a good story device; it doesn’t really matter what it really is, as long as it stands for truth, justice and the “right” way. Its physical presence is just like the True Cross, Longinus’ Spear, St. Michael’s pickled peritoneum, or any other “holy” relic: e.g. entrepreneurs started fabricating bits of the true cross as soon as they noticed a market for it; as we’ve seen from Holy Blood, Holy Grail, the DeVinci Code, and Newsweek, people are still making big bucks selling new baubles to hang on the old artificial tree, which is patently, the Grail’s only real value. When you get right down to it, it’s buying a box of air, isn’t it? That’s the way faith works, so have fun with the storyline.

Incidentally, Christ is the Greek Chrestos – a mystery cult popular with the poor and lower middle class of the 1st century C.E. Self-proclaimed “Apostle” Paul of Tarsus cobbled Chrestos with the historical Jesus movement as a sales package for Gentiles (infuriating the Jesus movement because he co-opted and lied about their guy; of such petty human foibles are great religious movements conceived), but that’s another story.

Ref: Joseph of Aramea - The Quest of the Sangraal: The Vision of Sir Launfal

MOVIE MADNESS:

Watched Kingdom of Heaven. Why was this made? It’s so damned superficial and ends flabbily. From it, however, I adduce the following general points re battle films:

No more wailing female voices as background chorus – interminable high-pitched whining supposed to be Celtic (?), Gregorian (?) Something aerie and spiritual I assume, but done to puling death.

Make action and sweep secondary to emotional involvement with real characters; spend some money on the script; give the actors something to say.

Stop the weepy music over scenes of battle carnage – irony it ain’t anymore, it’s heavy-handed moralizing done to death. Yes, war is hell, what did you expect?

Do scenes – vignettes – of individual men in combat, and severely curtail the excessive overuse of handheld news cam technique in mob battle action. Stop and pull back to see the canvas (battlefield) as a whole once in awhile.

Use more orienting shots – where are these people fighting? Not just on a wall or tower, horse or ground, but where the hell on the wall, why there? Are they defending useless rocks, or something important? Etc., etc., etc.?

Use natural sound a lot more and eliminate the musical bits. Let’s hear some real battle sounds – moans, screams, shrieks, death rattles, weeping, etc., etc., etc.

From the script for this one disaster alone, I observe the following specific bullpucky:

Orlando Bloom is completely calm and self-possessed through the whole flick – ultimately irritating. Hasn’t this guy got any self-doubt? Does he realize that the other guys have sharp swords?

Why is he advising on Saracen strategy and tactics to veteran crusaders when he, Bloom, is a newcomer to all this? Is he some sort of instinctive fighter genetically bred by bastardizing crusader lords, or some such bullpucky?

Why is Bloom the hero? This guy is too young to even have any character on his face. He doesn’t act – he walks through everything he’s ever done with the same “funny thing happened on the way to Mount Doom” attitude.

What a frightful waste of good cgi, real acting talent, scenery, and money.

That’s what results from letting Ridley go Scott-free.

MOURNING IN AMERICA:

In time, the plastic fantastic mourning that passes for genuine grief will dim. Society’s itch to have its heroes, even if it has to lie like hell to make them, will be satisfied for the time being. It will be trotted out again with the next “must-vent” crisis, and we shall have walls of flowers, teddy bears, and balloons – everything in short, nothing short of a full Super Bowl extravaganza – and many blathering speeches shy of substance and dripping with hypocrisy and crocodile tears, mindless chest thumping and blubbering, murmured prayers and homilies, all accepted as available. Flags will fly. Guns will boom. Vendors and trinket salesmen will profit. Blimps will display large advertising messages and rockets will light the night sky with red, blue, green, yellow and, Lordy loo, who knows what color pyrotechnics? The body politic will sleep steadier, enervated and expended by a good old-fashioned group grope and mope.

This has to be one of the silliest societies on record.

REVERY:

We’ve come a long way, you and I. Thousands upon thousands of miles, and yet we’re still far short of our destination. Where are we going anyway? Haven’t we already been there? The universe is a big round circle in a dimension so large that we poor mites cannot see the curve. It looks like a straight line to us, but so does time, and time is a repetition of itself, always telling us the same thing. As each generation is born, the next arises, and each of those, and all of those millions more, grows by the same learning process, through the same biology, give or take a tenth of a percent of one gene, which seems to specify skin tone and what we call racial differences. It’s the same as classifying men by the size of their nipples and finally as insignificant.

We all begin as fertilized eggs. We are one with the chicken and the salamander, the fish and the spider. There is not one atom within us that is remarkable for being unique. There is nothing unique in the universe, except individual discovery.

The FIRST OCCASIONAL INSTALLMENT of THISSES and THATS collected over the years:

548 Primrose Lane – Robocop’s home address before all the bad stuff went down.

“The more you drive, the less intelligent you are.” – Mechanic, Repo Man.

“We should not be ashamed to acknowledge truth from whatever source it come to us. Even if it is brought to us by former generations and foreign peoples. For him who seeks the truth there is nothing of higher value than the truth itself.” – al-Kindi, c.801-66

“Take Memoprove and forget memory problems!” – real T.V. ad. Blanks your mind?

Interesting (real) Historical Horse Manure:

Twenty-six handpicked men were selected from the 16th U.S. Cavalry to find John Wilkes Booth (Abraham Lincoln’s assassin), among whom was Boston Corbett, a religious zealot and military fanatic who had castrated himself for visiting prostitutes! Edwin Stanton had ordered Booth be taken alive. Corbett, of course, killed him. What’s wrong with this picture?

“Even I, Lucas, have heard the legend of a man fish!” – Lucas, Creature from the Black Lagoon.

“Ninety percent of things without backbones come alive in the darkness.” – no, not neoconservative republicans, starfish echinoids. Ocean dwellers.

Ancient Greeks: To sin = “to miss the mark” – can be high or low. Sin is not living up to, or being who you are.

Dead, uncorrupted saints make good listeners.

In China they don’t think of history as the past, but now, and in the future too, so it all blurs or blends in one unending flow, beginning, middle, and end. In the west history is neatly compartmented with dividing lines between epochs and eras. The Chinese view has us live in the stream as part of the stream; the Western Way allows us to cut off the past from relevance in our present, and as an influence on our future. We can forget time in a sense and float in a bubble, separate from time and space, in it, but not of it. The Western view, in this, as in religion and everything else in life, divorces us from connection to the rest of Creation and instead makes us little gods, capable of managing and directing our own fate, of manipulating the universe to our exclusive human ends – even if it kills us. Conclusion: the Western Way is a confusion of our actual stature and status in the universe, and hazardous to our health. – 8/27/04

Note: Feeling loss of identity? Eager to believe in something, anything? You’re prime fodder for cults.

Edward Gibbon writes that it’s less difficult to invent a fictitious story than to support a practical fraud. It is the character of falsehood to be loose and inconsistent. The most incredible parts of the legend are smoothed and softened by minions or apologists. Religion depends upon credulity and craftiness, which insensibly corrode the vital principles of virtue and veracity. The useful prejudice, which has obtained the sanction of time and opinion produces the effect of truth. People in the heat of religious faction are apt to despise the profane virtues of sincerity and moderation. 12/28/04.

I oppose all –isms. Isms polarize people and imperil the world. I prefer democracy, which cannot be made into an –ism. How could it be when one universal idea admits all ideas? I realize that that makes democracy inherently messy, but I prefer its disorder over the violence, persecution, and oppression of any of its alternatives – all of which, are –isms. – 11-10/05.

“It’s hotter than a Fox News weather skank.” – Ned Flanders (!), Simpsons.

“God, the original Tony Soprano.” – church sign, Simpsons.

Parzival by Wolfram Von Eisenbach, 13th century C.E. Much ado about fabrics, flags, one’s place at the table, head-busting by foolish men for foolish ladies, and the romantic search for the fabulous grail – the holiest snipe hunt for the silliest prize: the Americas-Stanley-Wimbledon cup of immortality available only for unblemished boobery. 5/15/06.

“He’d paid his debt to joy, his life was but a dying.” – Wolfram Eisenbach, Parzival.

Dey vas dese two crummy kids – rotten dey vas – runnin’ aboud nekkid, und fornicatin’, und it vas too much vor der ault papa. Dey vent und eat all der fruit offen der tree, und dere vas gonna be no pie! Der girl – hoo-vay – she vas a stinker dat tink she know ever thang, und snippet der papa. Sonny vas joost a big putz. Hoo-vay, he should live dere? Godda go too, vat’s da big loss? Nuttin’! Und der papa Yah-vey said, “Ged da fugg out mine garden!” Und, dat vas just da vay it vas. Dey is outen de platz. Phooie! 6/5/06.

“Ve ver in der bunker, und der fuehrer vas goin’ nutsy, und ve used to call him der Nutsy Nazi.” – imagined dialog for End the Third Reich Already History Channel Show. 5/30/06.

“They have to find a way to institutionalize the existing situation so they don’t have to fix it.” – insight on too many political debates. 5/26/06.

People, books, and things come into our lives for a reason. It’s up to us to figure out why. – 5/28/06.

And it came to pass that someone passed gas, and all were offended. – 5/28/06.

“There’s never been anything like it.” – Shaq, speaking for Icy Hot.

Pain is an itch we can’t scratch. All life is pain in the Buddhistic sense. Its temporal fleeting nature is a constant bitter sweetness, forever a tear on the edge of beauty, a sigh on the cusp of grief. We only get it for a moment, and sitting in silence, alone, we can feel its presence somewhere, always within, always informing, if we will it so. 5/31/06

The prissy spellcheck: I typed “bullcrap,” it wanted me to use: “bull rap,” “bullyrag,” or “fulcra.” I don’t see how “fulcra” can even remotely echo or apply, unless used to fling the bullcrap. 4/8/06

Nietzsche:

“The philosopher can attain to truth by his reason and can live by it, but not all human beings are philosophers and able to grasp the truth directly. Most can attain to it only through symbols.”

The medieval German Romance Parzival, by Wolfram von Eschenbach, is read widely in Waldorf high schools and teacher training courses, as a rich allegory for the modern human’s struggle for inner development (or as Rudolf Steiner put it, the development of the consciousness soul). (See here for an interesting article on how the story of Parzival relates to adolescence.)

I haven’t read it in a few years, but the other day it struck me that my current inner struggles about sending my kids to mainstream schools in some way resembles a thread in the plot of Parzival.

Queen Herzeloyde (Herzeleide, “heart’s sorrow”) loses her husband in battle, and so in her grief she vows to raise their son, Parzival, alone in the forest where he will never encounter knights, the chivalric life, or anything that may harm him. She doesn’t even tell him his name, only calling him bon fils, cher fils, beau fils.

Does this work?

No, of course not. One day some knights happen to ride by Parzival in the forest, and it’s all over. He’s overawed by their splendiferous armor, their knowledge of weaponry, and so on. He’s gone before Herzeloyde can say boo.

Now, without sounding too presumptuous, I remembered this part of the story when I was mulling over our school situation the other day. We’ve been pretty firmly in the Waldorf camp for a long time: Anthropapa and I have both studied the foundational works of anthroposophy and quite a bit of the Waldorf pedagogy as well. We’ve worked for two Waldorf teacher training colleges. Our kids went to a Waldorf home day care last year.

Here in the wilds of Pocatello, however, there are no Waldorf schools to be found. No Waldorf anything, so far. Just some homeschoolers and a fledgling school about an hour away. We’ll be glad to get to know them, but it’s not possible for us to commute that far right now.

So we found our best alternatives: a Lutheran school for SillyBilly, and the Early Learning Center at ISU for Napoleona. Both fine, sound schools where the kids are safe and happy all day long.

But…

These are mainstream schools. They are definitely not Waldorf. There are computers, there are movies, there are character books. There is reading and math in kindergarten. There are USDA lunches, complete with the tater tots and pizza I remember from when I was a kid (OK, they get some fruit and/or veggies with each meal, I will admit. But none of it is organic, no less biodynamic.)

I feel like, despite my best intentions, my kids are off into the dark woods, following a bunch of people dressed in shiny stuff and sporting the coolest rides they’ve ever seen.

Now, I realized that Parzival had some kinda destiny to follow, what with all the finding the Grail and helping the Fisher King and all. But Herzeloyde just wanted to protect him, so that neither of them would have to feel the grief she felt at the loss of her husband.

I don’t anticipate falling down dead the way Herzeloyde did when Parzival left her. But I do feel like we’ve tried so hard to provide a safe, nurturing place for my children, and now they’re off to fight wholly different and unanticipated battles.

And unlike Herzeloyde, I have options. We could move closer to the fledgling Waldorf school. I could homeschool them. Some day, we’ll probably move somewhere else, perhaps where there is a Waldorf school. But right now, I’m feeling my own heart’s sorrow.
