The popularity of shopping and paying bills on-line increases the need for you to protect the security of your user id’s and passwords.  Any online account that you use will require a User Name and Password.  Some sites have different rules on password length and special characters that other sites do not have.  You will find yourself creating more user names and passwords to the point at which you find yourself asking, “how do I keep track of all of my passwords without compromising my security?“.  One thing you do not want to do is to use the same information for all of the sites you access.  If someone gets that information they can access all of your accounts.  I do a fair amount of business travel and you don’t want to be carrying around a list of passwords that could accidentally fall into the wrong hands.

Well let me tell you I had a tough time of deciding how to handle this dilemma myself until I tried an award-winning product called RoboForm Pro.  Before I started using RoboForm Pro I had a hand-written list with all of my passwords. I was constantly having to look on the list to remember what I had used as my password for the site I was going to. I hate to admit it but one day I signed up on a site and forgot to write it down. I went back to that site a few weeks later and could not remember the user name and password I used. To top it off I did not remember what e-mail account (I have 5 accounts) I used when I registered so that I could recover the user name and password. That really did it for me. You can download RoboForm for yourself with their free trial however after the free trial time period you will need to decide if you want to upgrade.  The free trial RoboForm will only support 10 accounts after the initial trial period.  However this time period is more than ample to fully evaluate the product.  I tried the free version only to find out that I realized that I had 85 different on-line accounts.  I updated to the RoboForm Pro version and I’m extremely satisfied.

So I did what Mint.com told me to do and called them and had my interest rate lowered. WOW!  I wouldn’t have even known my interest rate had changed, nor would have called.  This is one very very small aspect of the greatness I have seen so far.  Being able to set budgets and categorized everything is just phenomenal.  You have to check it out for yourself.

LastPass Password Manager, Form Filler – The Last Password You’ll Have To Remember

Everyone knows the pain of forgetting passwords and then having to have them reset and sent to your email (if you can remember which email you used or still have the email account you originally set it up with).  Last pass works with multiple browsers to safely fill your password fields.  I say safely, because anyone can sit down at your computer and open up your browser’s tools and unhide ALL your passwords. Not very secure.  LastPass enables you to login with one master password to start the manager.  You can also install the toolbar on all your computers and they will all keep current off of one password database.  Whether I’m on my desktop, notebook, or netbook, I can create and save passwords that I will have access to.

Save the best for last? Of course.  Are you currently using any kind of social media? I’ll answer that for you, YES! That’s probably how you ended up here (not here as on earth, but on my blog).  Digsby is AMAZING.  I have all my email accounts, social media networks, and instant messengers setup.  It combines all of them into one easy to use application.  I can get status updates instantly, get notifications of emails, new FaceBook messages, and update my status to all my accounts simultaneously.  Most social networks let you hook up with twitter to sync your status.  This is far better, because you can pick and choose which ones you want to update.  From your windows toolbar you can preview emails, delete them, or mark as spam without even logging in!  Also integrated is FaceBook chat. So when you are talking with someone you don’t have to use the one that pops up on the browser. Plus digsby can log all of your chat history!  I could go on and on and on, but check it out.

Thanks to upgrading my blackberry curve 8900 to an unofficial OS 5.0, I’ve been forced to use another browser (long wi-fi only story) . BOLT Browser remains my favourite, but I decided to test-drive my Opera Mini 5 Beta again, albeit that I couldn’t cut and paste…. or so I thought!

So no-one bothered to correct me. You actually can cut and paste with Opera Mini. You just have to hold down the trackball and voila, cut and paste menu. With that I decided to play with the multi-tabbed browser and I remain in awe.

Need to access your passwords, secret questions, and personal ID information anywhere, anytime?  Then you need to take a look at the new RoboForm online service.  I recommend it.

RoboForm isn’t new.  A product by Siber Systems, Inc., the RoboForm desktop application has been helping users auto-fill forms and remember important information for some time.  What IS new is an online service (beta) which allows you to:

1. Sync your passwords, secret questions, and other identity information with RoboForm servers.  All data shared with RoboForm is encrypted with AES using a password which only the user knows.  RoboForm cannot access your data.
2. Access your online information from any computer with Internet access, without installing any software.
3. Access your online information using selected smartphones, including iPhones and Blackberries. 

Before we get to the online capabilities, let’s walk through the RoboForm Pro client application functionality.

Client Functionality

The RoboForm Pro client, with a $29.95 price tag for the first license, is available for download.  There is a nice quantity-discount calculator at the site, but $15.95 seems to be as low as it goes.

I downloaded the client and installed it on my desktop (Windows 7 and Firefox 3.5).  After activation (see Figure 1), I restarted Firefox.  The toolbar shown in Figure 2 appeared.

The time-to-live setting for the RoboForm master password is an important setting during setup.  As you’ll see as we step through this section, maintaining an active login to the client provides access to passwords and other private information.  So you want the login to expire without having to think about it.  The default is 120 minutes.  I set mine to 10.

The core of RoboForm password management is the passcard.  A passcard contains login and address information for a specific site or application.  There are two ways to set one up.  First, you can navigate to the login screen of the target site or Web application and enter your account ID and password.  You can also pre-configure a site login.   

To create my Gmail passcard, I provided a name and left Password-protect checked, as shown in Figure 3.  This requires the encryption password before I can access it.  I then created an email folder in which to place the passcard.  I also checked Add Shortcut to Links Toolbar.  When I clicked save, a button with the passcard name appeared in the RoboForm toolbar (See Figure 4).  Also saved was the URL to the login page.

The button performs two functions.  If the Gmail login page is not currently displayed, RoboForm instructs the browser to go there.  The second function is the same whether you are at the page or not.  RoboForm auto-fills the account name and password fields.  If you’ve previously used this function , a persistent cookie exists on your computer.  When the cookie is present, clicking the button causes the browser to navigate to the page, enter the login information, and login.  You can disable the persistent cookie feature by removing the asterisk in the field shown in Figure 5.  (Note: When editing passcards, the password is displayed in plain text.  This is so you can retrieve an unremembered password.  So beware shoulder surfers…)

In addition to passwords, you can store all personal information–including credit cards, bank account info, and social security number–in an identity form.  See Figure 6.  Note that the identity information, like all passcards, is encrypted with AES.  When saved, the identity appears in the RoboForm toolbar, as shown in Figure 4.  You can use it to fill-in any browser-based forms, and you can create multiple identities.

Finally, you can create free-form safe notes.  I created one to hold a sample security question, as shown in Figure 7.

This is a good time to talk about encryption strength.  The strength of the AES encryption used depends on the password used to protect your RoboForm information. 

• Master password less than 32 characters – 128 bit
• Master password from 32 to 47 characters – 192 bit
• Master password greater than 48 characters – 256 bit

If you can’t decide on a password for an account, the create-a-password feature built-in to RoboForm can help.  There was a small issue with the sample password shown in Figure 7.  It contained a dictionary word.  While this might not be a huge problem, you should be aware this might happen.  Play with this a little.  You can watch the bit strength change as you change the provided parameters.

So far, this looks like something I can use.  However, what happens when I’m not in front of the computer with my client software installed?  Well, I can create a repository with software loaded on a thumb drive.  Or I can use the new RoboForm online service (beta).

Features of Online Service (beta)

The online service provides you with your passwords, identity information, and safenote data anytime, anywhere.  The data is encrypted with your master password, which only you know.  If you lose the password, you lose your data.  Not even RoboForm can help.

To synchronize your local information with the online service, you first have to create an online account.  RoboForm must be installed on your computer to use this service.

Once the account is created, and you have synchronized your computer with your online repository, you can access your RoboForm data using an SSL connection as shown in Figure 8.

To sync your computer, click the Sync button in the toolbar.  If this is your first sync, RoboForm needs your online user ID and password, as shown in Figure 9.  Sync settings can be set or changed at any time by using the button shown in Figure 10.  Once configured, the prompt shown in Figure 10 is displayed, allowing you to manually sync your data and select auto-sync if you don’t want to worry about pushing future changes or additions to the online repository.  Note that you can also sync to local or network storage devices.

There are differences between using the online service and the local client.

1. Auto-navigation to the login page is not enabled, although the link is provided
2. Auto-fill is not enabled, so you have to copy and paste your account ID and password, which is displayed in plain text, to the login fields

The online service is free to try while in beta.  No future cost information is currently available.

The last online feature I tested was access via smartphone.  This worked flawlessly when I tried using my iPhone 3GS.  Figures 11 and 12 show the screens provided.

Recommendation

I recommend both the client software and the online solution.  This is the best password, identity, and general sensitive information repository solution I’ve seen.  If you are worried about how RoboForm manages passwords in memory, check out the user manual.  Passwords are purged from memory during events you select.

Web Replay can deal with multiple logins to the same website, having the same username, but  different passwords, helping you log in automatically to each. 

How it works

When you first enter your credentials to a website, Web Replay asks you to store them so you can log in to the website in 1-Click.

What if you use the same username to a website for two different logins, having two different passwords? Can you save them separately, as different accounts so you can also log in to each, separately? Of course! If you use the same username twice, to the same website, but type different passwords, Web Replay asks you:

1. to update the password if you have changed it in the meantime

2. or to create another account (using the same ID, but different password).

So if I go to Yahoo Mail and use as my username: john_28 and the password 123456, I save it with Web Replay, then I sign out and log in again, using the username john_28 and the password 982981, Web Replay will ask me to choose if I want to update the first password with the latter or to create a different account using the same username (See the picture below).

Today you need to remember many passwords. You need a password for the Windows network logon, your e-mail account, your homepage’s FTP password, online passwords (like website member account), etc. The list is endless. Also, you should use different passwords for each account. Because if you use only one password everywhere and someone gets this password you have a problem…A serious problem. The thief would have access to your e-mail account, homepage, etc. Unimaginable.

In fact, there are a good number of people who suffer from extreme confusion when it comes to remembering passwords.

Well, here comes KeePass, a completelt free utility, for the rescue. It is a 1.7MB setup file with hasslefree installation. Below is a screenshot and some explanation

KeePass is a free open source password manager, which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key file. So you only have to remember one single master password or select the key file to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known (AES and Twofish).

Once installed, it is very easy to use. Just create a new database file via menu option File –> New and start adding password entries via menu option Edit–> Add entry. You can also create logical groups and the add password entries in them. For example, you can create a group named ‘Mails’ under ‘Internet’ and add all the passwords of your various mail accounts in “Mails’ group. The same is shown below :

7월 5일 릴리즈 되었으니… 시간은 좀 되었군요.
어쨌든 KeePass 2버전 beta를 떼고 정식 릴리즈를 했군요.

KeePass 1버전을 USB로 넣다니기 불편하고 해서 LastPass를 사용했었습니다.
LastPass는 Firefox Addon과 IE 플러그인으로 두 브라우져에서는 불편이 없는데요.

Chrome, Safari 와 다른 어플리케이션의 로그인 할때는 불편함이 있더군요.
( Chrome, Safari에서는 LastPass의 Bookmarklets을 사용하면 그런데로 웹서핑에는 불편 없이 사용합니다. )

KeePass를 쓰면 좋은점은 역시 데이터를 직접 가지고 있는게 보안적으로 마음이 안정되는 겁니다.
LastPass의 웹만 있으면 된다는 편리함도 있기 때문에 당분간 둘을 같이 쓸것 같습니다.

리눅스에서 KeePass 2버전 실행은 잘 됩니다.
KeePass 2버전이 .net 프로그램이어서 mono를 사용해서 실행하면 되고요.

그런데 많이 아쉽게도 FTP기능이 아직 구현이 안되었다고 나오는 군요.
제가 1버전을 사용해서 손꼽아 기다렸던 기능인데요.

UI가 좀 어색한데 그것 조정하고 FTP가 되야 리눅스에서 사용하게 될것 같습니다~

In this excerpt I’m talking about  updating  / syncing Web Replay database across computers, your newly stored logins, newly created accounts & passwords, new bookmarks, so you can run them in one click from any computer having Web Replay installed.

It’s like this: you change a password to a Web Replay login or macro on one computer, you can sync it in seconds on another, using a files sync provider like DROPBOX, Live Mesh or Folder Share.

Here’s how it’s done in quick steps: 

1. Install DROPBOX (click on the link to install it and create an account) or a files sync provider of your choice. 

2. Create a new folder inside DROPBOX (open your DROPBOX  by double-clicking the system tray icon, next to the clock, and create a new folder, with a suggestive name like –Web Replay sync) 

3. Go to Web Replay management studio, at Computers (see the picture at the bottom) and click  button to show Web Replay the path to this newly created folder in DROPBOX.

You’ll find it in My Documents folder.

4. Click (starting with the second computer) Sync now button . Anyways, after you took the steps from 1 to 3, Web Replay asks you, on signing in, whether you want to sync database changes or not.

NOTE: In order to realize the database synchronizing across computers you have to follow the same steps above once, on each computer you want to sync Web Replay database. Meaning you have to install DROPBOX on all computers and show Web Replay the same path to the syncing database folder you created inside DROPBOX!
