Winter is quickly approaching, and it’s a great time to get out in the Virginia landscape and look at the hardscaping in your garden. Below we will discuss how to care for pavers, stepping stones, arbors, trellises, and also shows how to prepare them for winter months. Planning now will have you set and ready for Springtime. If a new patio, retaining wall or outdoor rooms are of interest then consider installing now as we will offer a 20%  landscape winter discount through January 30th 2010. Pavers and Groundcovers

* Stepping stones make a great addition to the lawn and garden by allowing access to perennials and areas that require weeding.
* Pavers come in several varieties–cobblestone, concrete, wooden rings, etc.
* Installing pavers is an easy way to discourage weeds; for extra weed control, place landscape fabric beneath the pavers.
* To install groundcovers, simply make slits in the landscape fabric and plant right through the openings.
* When adding mulch, use pea gravel or crushed rock that complements the pavers, then pour the gravel or rock around the pavers to cover the desired area.
* Bark chips work well with wooden ring pavers, and they also have an attractive natural look.
* Before planting a “living mulch,” lift pavers up and level the soil. Next, remove plants from the containers and gently tease the roots. Then, space the plants every four to six inches between the pavers and water thoroughly.
* Think about live ground cover, there are plenty of plant varieties!

Landscape fabric is available at most home centers, hardware stores and landscape supply stores. The lighter gray variety is more tightly spun than other types, allowing water–but not weeds–to pass through.

When inspecting a hardscape, repair any loose slats on lattices using a hammer, nails or stapler; touch up with paint if necessary. If vines are too loose, secure them properly in place to ensure they have adequate support. Paint and touch up benches as needed.

It is a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the Valley, quiet and very peaceful. As I look out over the yard and beyond, I am always amazed at how much color there is in the desert. At this moment, a hummingbird is hovered over a bright, Red Justicia flower and stunning, pink Oleander flowers peek out over the fence. In the distance, I can see the deep, green color of grass and trees. The Yellow Bells are in full bloom as are the Yellow Dot, the purple, orange, red, white and yellow Lantana. The contrast of the white flowers of the Blackfoot Daisy and the beautiful, deep, purple flowers of Langman’s Sage is a desert delight.

I am not always certain what colors will pop up in my yard at any time during the year. I am not picky about color. If a plant survives past its first summer, let alone blooms, I feel incredibly lucky!

What do you do in the Winter….?

It’s funny really, but I have had two completely different jobs in my lifetime where that was the question I got asked the most.

The first was in my mid twenties when I had a complete change of life moment and cleared off to Greece for a Summer season to work for a Sailing holiday resort in the kids club. It mainly involved playing around either on or in the sea or pool all day and then having a couple of beers in the local town each evening.

As staff in the resort , we were expected to sit and eat dinner with the guests which was fantastic as I got to meet so many interesting people. after the initial hello’s the question was inevitable….

I used to sit there bursting with local information about the island we were on,bursting with information about the weather and wind conditions that naturally occurred in the area and absolutely bursting at the seams with hints and tips on Sailing and windsurfing to improve their holiday experience.

But people are funny, they like to find out information about each other and the question arose every night…. ” so David, what do you do in the winter….?”

Well, I had a successful courier business before I packed up and left for Greece , and actually had no plan for the winter, wasnt even sure if i would go back to the U.K.

I just didnt know what to say….I couldnt answer them….In the end I chanced my arm and told them I was open to offers if they had a job going.

Now, 6 – 7 years later, I get asked that question whenver I go to a quote, which at the moment is about 6 times a week.
