Okay, okay, while I don’t find True Romance to be exactly old, considering that the movie came

Okay, okay, while I don’t find True Romance to be exactly old, considering that the movie came out in 1993, I’m going to have to eventually come to the realization that pretty soon, we’re going to be seeing the 20th anniversary releases of movies that came out while I was in high school. That’s kind of depressing when you think about it.

I am fairly certain that this movie as well as other things like Vanishing Point after having watched Death Proof. Quentin Tarantino loves to reference old ass movies in his own movies, and True Romance is no different. Off the top of my head, I remember this movie referencing Mr. Majestyk, The Mack, and Sonny Chiba’s The Street Fighter. It’s a shame that Netflix doesn’t have The Street Fighter, Sonny Chiba is great.

True Romance is a 1993 action comedy movie written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott. It stars Patricia Arquette and Christian Slater, but has everyone under the sun playing minor roles. Let’s go down the list. Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer (though you never see his face), Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, Bronson Pinchot, Samuel L. Jackson, Mike Rapaport, James Gandolfini, Tom Sizemore, Chris Penn, and Saul Rubinek.

Sure, some of those names aren’t immediately recognizable, so let me inspire you to have an, “Oh, that guy!” moment. You may remember Bronson Pinchot as the art dealer in Beverly Hills Cop, but most everyone else remembers him as Balki Bartokomous from Perfect Strangers. Michael Rapaport has done a number of starring and recurring TV roles the past few years, from Prison Break to Boston Public to My Name is Earl. Sadly, though, I always remember him as one of the Popcopy employees from Chapelle’s Show. Saul Rubinek is typically one of those people that you see in a guest role on most everything so that you recognize his face, but never remember his name. I know him from Dick, in which he played Kissinger, and Masters of Horror episode “The Washingtonians.” Recently he’s been playing the curator in the Sci-Fi Channel’s original series Warehouse 13. I absolutely refuse to spell that channel in its new, wrong way.

Patricia Arquette and Christian Slater play Alabama Whitman and Clarence Worley, a couple of low rent-types that find themselves in over their heads. Alabama is a call girl who’s only been at it a couple of times. Her unknowing john is Clarence Worley, where she manages to spill popcorn all over Worley in the middle of a Sonny Chiba triple feature. Long story short, they fall in love. Unfortunately, Alabama’s a call girl and she has a pimp. Clarence takes care of the pimp in a very amateur way and instead of getting Alabama’s things, he winds up (accidentally) with several million dollars worth of cocaine that didn’t belong to him (or the pimp). This pretty much sets up the rest of the movie to end with a Mexican standoff with the cops, a movie producer’s thuggish bodyguards, and the mob, with Alabama and Clarence in the middle of it all.

Unlike other Bonnie and Clyde-type things like Natural Born Killers or the Space song “Me & You Vs. the World“, Alabama actually makes it to the end of the movie unscathed. Everyone else, not so much for the most part.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, some parts especially, but there are a couple of things that annoyed the hell out of me. First off, dude works in a comic book store and is driving around in a purple Cadillac? I don’t think so. And secondly? Opening and closing the movie with an explanatory voiceover. YUCK YUCK YUCK. Voiceover can be done well, particularly in cinéma noir, and occasionally in more modern stuff like Fight Club, but in this movie it came off as cheap and lazy and completely out of character for a writer so well known for his dialogue.

As for the parts of the movies I did like? Dennis Hopper’s monologue to Christopher Walken was brilliant, if a bit disturbing. It’s written well, but I’m still not a fan of the n-word being dropped as a pejorative, particularly by whites. Other than that though? It’s up there as one of the all-time pre-death monologues. I compare it favorably to Rocco’s joke in The Boondock Saints.

And for a bit of the ultraviolence, Patricia Arquette’s killing of James Gandolfini is a phenomenal scene. It’s directed very well. I’m a fan of having violence be implied off camera or in silhouette. I gotta say, Tony Soprano dies in real messy fashion, in a way involving shampoo and a corkscrew.

One moment that gave me a chuckle was Bronson Pinchot’s character’s name. He was Elliot Blitzer, which I find amusing given that there’s a character in the movie that plays a call girl, and that’s what former New York governor Eliot Spitzer got busted for. Soliciting, not the actual prostitution.

I’ve got to say, however, this movie wasn’t much of a stretch for many of the characters, as I’ve seen them in similar roles elsewhere. Oh, look! Christian Slater is a kind of unstable yet charming rogue! Where have we seen that? Oh, how about Heathers or Pump Up the Volume? And Gary Oldman as a murderous psychopath? No, it’s not like we’ve ever seen Gary Oldman do that! The Professional and The Fifth Element? What are those? To be fair, though, both of Oldman’s examples came out after this movie; I’d just seen them before this movie.

Medium, UK Living, Fridays 9pm This should really be a guilty pleasure because I in no way fall into

Medium, UK Living, Fridays 9pm

This should really be a guilty pleasure because I in no way fall into the category of target audience for this programme, I am sure, but as I feel no guilt or shame for watching it, because it’s so good, I can’t categorise it as such. (I do feel a little bit ashamed for watching Desperate Housewives but it’s not on air in the UK just now so that will have to wait. Please contain your excitement.)

Medium stars Patricia Arquette as Allison DuBois, a woman cursed or blessed depending on your viewpoint with the ability to communicate with the dead. Now this communication varies wildly, usually depending on the necessity of the plot. Your common regular mediumship is through her dreams. Inevitably, the teaser at the beginning of the show will be a dream sequence containing some shocking and usually gruesome revelation. Cut to: Allison gasping and sitting up as she wakes in bed, usually disturbing her long-suffering husband, Joe, as she does so. Further dream will occur throughout the episode, each time revealing just a little bit more about the crime and narrowing down on the identity of the killer.

These dreams are in some way meant to be from the dead, so usually the victim of the week’s murder, but while they show admiring initiative in tracking down the sensitive Mrs DuBois they remain startlingly aware of the remaining running time and seem unable to just tell her, plain and simple, who killed them, why, and where the evidence is. To be fair to them, being dead is a bit of a handicap and who are we to criticise their methods of delivering information.

Okay, so all this is very tongue-in-cheek. There is an inbuilt ludicrousness about the set-up that may well hinder you from enjoying it. But if you’re a fan of this genre and can accept the conditions then you should get a lot of pleasure out of it. And it does know how silly it is a lot of the time. Some episodes are out-and-out comedies and these contrast well with the more sombre, gory episodes.

Allison can also get visions just from touching or being near a person or by looking at their photograph or holding an item formerly possessed by them. There’s no clear indication how this ties in to the dead people thing but just go with it, okay. Her third method, and easily the most helpful, is where the dead person just shows up, usually in her home, and chats to her like a normal person. This is rare, probably because the crimes would be solved too quickly if this happened each time. Some of the revelations in her dreams are bizarrely vague but it keeps the viewer guessing and if you can guess the twist of the episode it makes you feel quite smart.

All this could be seen to be denigrating the show but nothing could be further from the truth. I absolutely love it and have done since the very first episode. While some of the patterns have become a bit formulaic and repetitive by the very nature of the show, the writers can still come up with some neat variations and the early episodes especially were clever at coming up with new ideas.

The format of the show demands that Allison works for the District Attorney so she can use her skills to catch the bad guys. She works closely with D.A. Manny Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) and Detective Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt). Despite her always being right they still act suspicious of her when she comes up with really incredulous information often waiting until the final act before confirming she was right. Thankfully, the performances are so warm that you forgive them.

The other main strand of the show is Allison’s home life. Married to Joe, an engineer, she has three daughters and as fans will attest this is as important a part of the show as the crime element. As the family has grown over the six seasons it has been on air, we have been given tantalising glimpses that each of the young DuBois girls has inherited their mother’s gift, making life at home and especially at school all the more interesting. Before the kids’ visions kicked in, though, it was the mundanity of the family life contrasted with the horror that drew many viewers in. This was like a normal family and not a television one. They actually spoke and acted like a real family. And Maria Lark as the middle daughter, Bridgette, is just one of the funniest things on TV. Her natural delivery and facial expressions are to be treasured. It’s fascinating to watch the children grow up and become a bigger part of the show. As their powers develop perhaps they could be given their own spin-off show? It could be called Small, Medium and Large!

Ba-doom tish! I thank you. Please try the waitress and remember to tip your veal.

So, anyway, as we were saying, the acting is superb. Patricia Arquette has been nominated several times for Best Actress Emmys and Golden Globes and has won once if I recall. I like PA but it took me a while before I warmed to her character on this show. It took me some time to realise that she was deliberately underplaying it so as not to glamorise it and now I love this strong, dignified woman who always puts her family first. Ironically, in a possible first for Hollywood, the real Allison DuBois, on which this series is based, is actually more glamorous than the acted version, based on what little of her I’ve seen.

What’s that? Oh, yes. This is based on a real person. Did I forget to mention that? There is a real psychic/medium called Allison DuBois based in Phoenix, Arizona. She really does work with the police department and claims to be able to tell you when you’re going to die. Now, this could be a problem for some. I know it was for me. I don’t believe in this person’s ability to speak to the dead. I don’t know how successful her record is but she does seem to be very genuine in her beliefs. There are books written both by and about her and I’m definitely planning on getting my hands on them, especially the sceptical ones, to try and get a better handle on the truth of these extraordinary claims.

But none of this bothers me while I watch this fictional show. I love Supernatural but I don’t believe the portrayal there of angels, demons and the devil are necessarily all that accurate. Equally, I think a lot of the science in Doctor Who is a stretch and Spooks may not be a fair representation of how spies operate in this country. If any of this is a problem to you then I suggest you stick to watching documentaries. They’re never faked.

So, back to the acting after your rather rude interruption. The relationship between Allison and her husband is the glue that holds the show together. These characters are so believable and this offsets the (super-)nature of the show perfectly. Jake Weber is fantastic as Joe. Supportive of his wife and kids but exasperated at all the extra baggage that these powers come with, Joe also has to deal with the normal pressures of being a husband and father, and the effects that all these have on his job(s). This role could have been so superficial if it wasn’t so well-written and acted.

This latest episode, Season 5 Episode 16: The Man in the Mirror, was one of the oddball, quirky episodes with extra helpings of comedy. It may not have been to everyone’s taste but I loved it, especially as it guest starred Jeffrey Tambor, one of my favourite actors. You might remember him from Arrested Development or as Hank in The Larry Sanders Show. Here he plays a potential murder victim whose consciousness is somehow transferred into the body of Allison DuBois, and vice versa. So he is, essentially, playing Allison in this episode. It’s a very difficult thing for a male actor to do without camping it up but Tambor is superb, subtle and restrained and effortlessly capturing the essence of Arquette’s performance. All this while mostly wearing a hospital gown and being attached to an IV feed!

This season, and I realise this is one of the shows where we’re considerably behind the original States run, the writers seem to be trying to take more risks and freshen it up. This is always a dangerous time for a series. You need to stick to the formula to some extent because that’s what the loyal audience wants but if you don’t change it up a little then they’ll get bored and numbers watching will dwindle. Go too far, though, and you’ll jump the shark. It’s a delicate balancing act but I think the production team are managing to achieve a happy medium.

Ba-doom tish! Thank you. Waitress. Veal.

So very obviously I watched it today and I have to say it’s the most touching movie I’ve watched ;D it’s so good! <3 but it doesn’t have any subtitles and Patricia Arquette who acts really well in it has quite indiscernible speech so 20% of the time I couldn’t tell what she was saying but I guess that’s part of the Patricia-Arquette-acts-well package.

Hi. How are you? My name’s Elliot, and I’m with the Cub Scouts of America. We’re… we’re selling uncut cocaine to get to the jamboree.

– Elliot

Quentin Tarantino penned the script for True Romance for director Tony Scott. I heard about this movie, because when I saw the IMDb page of Inglourious Basterds. He made one of the characters “Bear Jew” Donowitz the grandfather of one of the character in this movie. I thought I might check it out. I think this was Tarantino’s attempt to have a bloodily romantic movie, but it fails.

Taking place in Detroit, a comic book store worker, Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) goes to a Sonny Chiba “Street Fighter” triple feature. A beautiful young woman, Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette) intentionally bumps into him there. They take a liking to each other and meet each other for pie. He tries to get to know her more, but she is coy.

They quickly fall in love and have sex. Afterwards, Alabama confesses to him that she is a call girl that was hired by his boss to get him laid on his birthday. They promise to be with each other always and get married the next day. She tells him about her fucked up life and how needed to get her stuff back from her pimp

When shit is about to go down the spirit of Elvis (Val Kilmer) gives Clarence a quick pep talk in the bathroom. Clarence wants to retrieve Alabama’s stuff from her former pimp, a Rasta man named Drexl (Gary Oldman). Going over there, things go wrong when he kills Drexl and takes a suitcase. It turns out that suitcase is filled with a million dollars worth of cocaine from a drug lord, Blue Lou Boyle.

The duo doesn’t know this. When Clarence comes back to the apartment bloody and bruised, Alabama is turned on by doing anything for her. They go over to a trailer house to meet his father, Clifford (Dennis Hooper), who is a police officer. They haven’t seen each other in three years. He wanted to know if the cops are after the twosome. Clifford tells them that they are in the clear.

They take a road trip Clarence’s best friend in Hollywood, Dick Ritchie (Michael Rappaport), an actor with his stoner roommate, Floyd (Brad Pitt). After the duo leaves, Vincenzo Coccotti (Chirstopher Walken), the local counsel for Boyle, pays Clifford a visit. The thugs interrogate him when Clarence dropped his license at the crime scene. They want to get their score back.

The movie is supposed to be a modern version of Bonnie and Clyde, but the movie felt false. You know you hear Tarantino dialogue when the characters ramble on about movies and minute trivia. The movie as whole laid flat. There was no oomph. I didn’t care if the characters lived or died. It was disappointing.

Judgment: Words cannot describe how terrible this movie is.

Rating: **1/2

True Romance
True Romance (1993) is an American romantic crime film written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott. It stars Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette with an ensemble cast including Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, Chris Penn and Tom Sizemore.
This is THE movie that put ALOT of people on the map.
Essentially the story goes as follows….Boy (christian slater) falls in love with a Call girl (Arquette) and after getting married the day after they meet, he decides that he needs to confront (read; kill) her pimp played by Gary Oldman. He does this and steals, on accident, a grip of drugs and then after briefly meeting his old man a former cop (Hopper), he and his new wife flee to California. So the pimps big connect (Walken) follows the trail to his father the retired cop and tries to torture him for info, yet fails. However, they find out where the drugs went via shitty chance circumstance. So the newly married couple are in California and for various reasons are trying to sell the drugs to a rich movie director and it all goes south real quick when the Italians show up. A blood festival insues and guess who the only two are to escape? You got it….

This movie is amazing due to a few factors. The Talent. The Dialogue. The editing. It seems like Tony Scott got in and finger fiddled things a bet less than in other films and let the amazing crew he had just act. Very interesting.

Below I provide a video of one of, if not the coolest dialogues in movie history….watch and learn. This was in fact, the first film in which I started a LONG TERM love affair with Chris Walken and Dennis Hopper really really impresses (Dennis get well soon!!!!).

Below…just a bonus moment from the Film.

No me gusta ser agorero, ni tampoco es un malsano deseo que tengo hacia los DeBois. Incluso me gusta

This my ultimate favourite film. Religious conspiracies, supernatural happens, priests, churches, I was in heaven when I flipped over and saw this on one night. I know own it on DVD and watch it alot. It revolves around the suposed banning of The Gospels of Thomas by the Catholic Church (which is false, they were never repressed). A priest who translated the gospels dies and his spirit is transfered to a 23 year old hairdresser (Arquette) through a rosary given to her by her mother. However, things are not always as simple as they sound, Father Almeida gives her more than a message; he gives her the stagmatic wounds as well. The priests in charge then try and kill her so that the Gopsell will stay hidden. It’s a bit violent in places, but brilliant and the way in which it is shot is fabulous. Though it’s about religion, it doesn’t preach it and is every so slightly Dan Brownish.

Law & Order - NBC – http://www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order/

Dollhouse - FOX – http://www.fox.com/dollhouse/

Stargate Universe - SyFy - http://www.syfy.com/universe/index.php

Psych – USA Network – http://www.usanetwork.com/series/psych/index.html

Dollhouse will not be on this week! Sorry about the mixup! It returns next week! But in the meantime… Be sure to watch it on Fancast or Hulu, or at FOX.com for that matter! Let’s save the show Whedon-fighters! Viva la Dollhouse!

On Law & Order tonight:

When Larry Johnson arrives home from picking up his adopted, physically disabled children from school, he discovers his wife’s dead body on the floor of their home. Detectives Cyrus Lupo Kevin Bernard question Vaughn, who explains that he and his wife had adopted a child with special needs and felt it was their calling, so they adopted nine more children. While the detectives question the children for suspects and a motive, they uncover an affair and an offer for the Vaughn family to appear in a reality show causing tension in the household and with another family.

So, this week’s episode is ripped from the headlines… Expect that the king of losers, Jon Gosselin, hasn’t killed his wife, Kate, yet. Here’s to hoping this week’s episode is better than last week’s!

Then on Dollhouse (which will get at least 13 episodes this season!):

Sierra’s introduction to the Dollhouse is revealed when she faces her connection to the Rossum Corporation, a link that leads to obsession and murder. Matthew Harding: Keith Carradine.

While some episodes of this weird show are better than others, I am really hoping that it gets better. Keith Carradine will be a nice addition in this week’s episodes, you really can’t go wrong with a Carradine!

And on our favorite psychic show, Medium:

Allison starts having visions of strange symbols that may hold the key to learning the identity of a notorious serial killer.

Nothing is better in a murder mystery than a serial killer! Although for some reason, Allison never trusts her dreams when they always seem to be pretty spot on, every week. Come on Allison, I know that Joe is the best TV husband and all, but seriously… You are interpreting those dreams right! Jeez!

As for our weekly Stargate fix, on Stargate Universe:

When the Destiny s power reserves drop to a critical level, the crew is ordered to use power for essential services only, but the rationing isn’t enough to keep Rush from announcing that the all the crew on board will die within a few days.

I am just not a fan of desert planets, so as long as we don’t land on another one of those for the rest of the season I am all for the show to continue. And I am totally loving Eli!

And on the Fall season finale of Psych:

While working on a case involving an ice cream truck, Shawn stumbles into something much bigger and deadly

Somehow this is is sounding reminiscent of The Goonies… Chunk locked in the ice cream freezer with the stiff… I am so mad that the season is nearing a close, but I am hearing that it is returning in the early ’10’s and that Alli Sheedy will be reprising her role!

What are YOU watching tonight??

The weird and wonderfully warped world of David Lynch! He is definitely not everyone’s cup of

The weird and wonderfully warped world of David Lynch! He is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. My husband for instance finds his films irritating as hell. I, however, am mad freaking in love with the guy! I get completely lost is the bizarre mystery that is Lynch’s universe. ‘Lost Highway’ is one of the few Lynch titles that I have not seen multiple times. In fact, I don’t think I have seen this one since its original run in theatres. That is far too long! I figured it was about time I took another drive down the ‘Lost Highway’.

A mysterious videotape in an unmarked envelope is left on the doorstep of musician, Fred Madison and his wife Renee. The footage is the inside of their home, filmed while they were asleep. While attending a party with his wife he is cornered by a bizarre character that engages him in a peculiar and disturbing exchange of words. This seems to be the catalyst to a life that suddenly spins completely out of control.

‘Lost Highway’ is not a straight-up horror film like the vast majority of flicks usually reviewed in the Dungeon. It is a mystifying psychological puzzle with elements of suspense that seethes with sexual intensity. There are unsettling images, violence and a parade of peculiar characters. There is no mistaking that you are watching a David Lynch film. My absolute favourite thing about any of Lynch’s films are his characters. Always fascinating, always quirky, and always perfectly cast. Bill Pullman gives a subdued yet manic performance as Fred Madison. Patricia Arquette says so very much, without uttering a word playing both the wife Renee and sultry muse Alice. Arquette oozes sexuality from every last pore. Men are smitten with her beauty, and are willing to kill for it. The other men in her life are an aging crime boss and Pete Dayton, a young man recently released from jail. This is where things get really wacky. Her young man and her musician are the same person in parallel universes. Well, probably not. That seems a little too supernatural for Lynch. More likely, there is no other man at all, only the bizarre images of a mind slowly submerging into the depths of hell. Insanity. It’s a beautiful thing. You can be as weird and obscure as you care to be. Anything goes! Who’s to say my interpretation is accurate? It does beg the question, is any of what we are seeing actually happening? You could spend days analyzing the shit out of most Lynch films but why would you do that? Just sit back and enjoy the ride!

His imagery and film style is a beautiful thing to behold. The Badalamenti score hits the spot and intensifies the mood. It’s nothing short of magnificent! Even the musical selections beyond the score were brilliant and included several of my favourite musicians including David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Lou Reed and Rammstein. As I’ve already mentioned, it is the characters that really do it for me. Robert Blake is magnificently creepy as the “mystery man”. His conversation with Pullman’s character during the party scene is not to be missed! Also impressive is Balthazar Getty’s performance as Pete Dayton. He successfully channels the aura of Pullman’s character and melds it with his own unique flavour. I must admit, some of the more minor characters in this one are not quite as entertaining as other Lynch entries. Also missing are the cameo’s from his cast of regulars, although Jack Nance does turn up here. Lost Highway is a sublime chapter in the book of Lynch. De-licious! Highly recommended!

Dungeon Rating: 4/5

Directed By: David Lynch

Starring: Bill Pullman, Patricia Arquette, Balthazar Getty, Natasha Gregson Wagner, Robert Loggia, John Roselius, Michael Massee, Robert Blake, Jack Nance

(BTW, celebrities in groups count as one.)

Reba McIntire: This fine woman is an absolute pleasure. I waited on her during a stint in Nashville years ago. It took me a while to realize who she was, actually was clued in by fellow staff members. I have never met a more gracious and polite customer. Tipped me far more than I deserved. I will never forget her kindness.—Edward W., Knoxville, TN

Andre Agassi and Stephie Graf came into my restaurant for lunch. They were very polite, signing a few autographs, and Andre left a $100 bill on a $60 check.

One busy night a woman with two small children had just been seated and I was totally in the weeds. I was preparing to walk up to the table when I heard a voice saying “Excuse me, we don’t have much time. Can you get our waiter?” I knew it was the woman from my section, so before I looked at her I started saying “I’m your waiter and I was on my way over!” in kind of a rude tone. While I’m saying this I look up into the eyes of Patricia Arquette. She said she was sorry and turned and walked back to the table. I was completely embarrassed and made her my priority and everything was great. I speeded her order through and she left me 25%. Very polite and used “please” and “thank you” at every visit I made to the table. Come back anytime, Patricia!

Morgan Freeman is one of the most respectful and complimentary diners I have had in my restaurant, a true gentleman. A good tipper as well. —Dave

I work in one of the better restaurants in a city famed for its food and service. I have waited on numerous celebrities, but the winners of the “most gracious and generous” award have got to be Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. While filming “Dead Man Walking,” they ate at my restaurant quite often, and the staff uniformly rejoiced at their humor, tipping, lack of pretension, and just plain “niceness.”—Ken, New Orleans

Reba McEntire: Very friendly and very natural, doesn’t play “the star”. She used to come into therestaurant in sweatpants and tee-shirts, no make-up, and her hair up in a pony tail. A very sweet lady and a decent tipper. —Jeff H

Reba, again!? Wow, that says alot!

You can add Terry “Hulk” Hogan to your “Saints” list. I tend bar at a Clearwater hot spot, and Terry and his family were in a few weeks ago. Not only did he leave $200 on a $120 bill (they were at a 4 top, not the bar), he signed autographs for at least a dozen kids and talked to people for a good half hour. VERY classy guy. —Beachguy, Clearwater, FL

Mike Tyson – Hands out $100 bills like they’re Kleenex.

Paris Hilton – Is said to always take care of wait staff and tip handsomely. She’s also generous with hairdressers, manicurists, valets and drivers.

Charlie Sheen – At his oldest daughter’s 16th birthday party tipped staff $200 each.

Richard Dreyfuss – Tipped 20% and helped server clean up mess left behind by his kids. He must be changing his ways after he was listed on some bad tipper lists.

Presidential Bonus: Barrack Obama – A recent TMZ item noted Obama tipped $18.00 on a $2.00 mug of beer.
