Portugal 6-2 Bosnia

Portugal defeated Bosnia by a thrilling scoreline of 6-2 to book their place in Euro 2012. Ronaldo was the star of the show, recording a brace, while Helder Postiga also scored twice. Nani added a spectacular long-ranger, and Miguel Veloso scored his second-ever goal for the Seleccao with a sumptuous free-kick. Portugal were too hot for Bosnia to handle, and while the visitors did make life uncomfortable at times for the Seleccao, Portugal always looked the clear winners.

The game started off almost spectacularly after Raul Meireles failed to finish off a rebound from a Ronaldo shot. That was quickly forgotten when Ronaldo opened the scoring by rifling in a spectacular free kick: his third during Paulo Bento’s reign so far. The team the doubled their lead soon after. Raul Meireles’ simple ball found Nani in quite a bit of room. The winger turned, looked up, and unleashed a ferocious shot that gave the Bosnian goalkeeper no chance. With Portugal up 2-0, the team started to step off the accelerator a bit. They were punished accordingly, if harshly, when Fabio Coentrao handled in the box. The referee awarded a penalty, which Misimovic slotted home cool-as-you-like past Rui Patricio. That was the last event of note that occurred in the first half. The two teams went into their respective locker rooms with the score at 2-1 in Portugal’s favor.

Soon after the break, Portugal were at it again. This time, however, ended in a goal. Some quick thinking from Joao Moutinho put Ronaldo through on goal. The captain rounded the keeper and finished emphatically with his left foot. Once again, with a two-goal cushion, Portugal eased off the pedal. They were once again punished when some lax defending from the team gave Spahic the simplest of finishes. With the scoreline once again within one goal, the Seleccao pushed for more breathing room. They were rewarded on 72 minutes, when a quick pass from substitute Ruben Micael opened up a shot from Helder Postiga, who made no mistakes with his left footed shot, which he buried in the bottom corner. With breathing room restored, Portugal still continued to press for another goal. Just minutes later, the team won a free-kick on the edge of the box. Miguel Veloso struck the ball, which dipped over the wall and into the empty net. The goalkeeper was bamboozled. That goal was only Veloso’s second goal for the National team; the first coming late in 2009 against Malta. The team wasn’t done just yet, however. Almost immediately, Fabio Coentrao was found on the left flank. He surged forward and somehow crossed the ball at the last moment. Helder Postiga was on hand to head the ball home to make the final score 6-2 Portugal and seal their place in next summer’s Euro 2012.

The Lambach family has grown significantly in the last two months since our move to our new home from six to fifteen. Along with Paul, Rosa, Rachel, Hannah, poodle “D”, and cat “Lilly”, now Patricio and Pako (two young men from our church) stay with us many nights.  Hannah became the proud owner of a pregnant female rabbit (a surprise gift of our Pastor and his wife Edvaldo and Ceni after her guinea pig died) that birthed a liter … and the three surviving ones are robust, active and as cute as you can imagine. Pako also brought home 2 chicks, a male and female. We have adapted two of the kennels in the back to keep the rabbits and chicken’s (along with our cat Lilly) safe at night while Rottweiler “Blackie” keeps watch and runs free at night!

Fue una experiencia única que me encantaría revivir. Pero este blog no es sobre eso. Si no sobre lo que vino después.

A la salida del cine, y todavía con la euforia de Marty McFly y el Doc, decidimos que finalmente, luego de mucho hablarlo, nos íbamos a Europa. No este año, no; si no las vacaciones del 2012. Entre tanto caminar y charlar, cuando llegamos finalmente a casa un par de horas después, la idea ya tenía un poco más de forma y había cosas que ya habíamos decidido. Los países a visitar, y por qué no, la fecha. Que por cierto, la adelantamos un poco. Pasar mi cumpleaños número veintiuno, navidad y año nuevo en Madrid, París y Londres sería uno de esos goles Maradonianos (aunque los nombres de las ciudades son solo a modo ilustrativo, se entiende la idea) que aspiramos a hacer, así que finalmente el viaje empezaría en diciembre de este año y terminaría en enero del próximo.

Falta mucho, unos once meses. Pero tenemos mucho que organizar todavía. Y qué mejor que llevar un registro de toda la planificación, para que si finalmente llegamos a Europa, podamos recordar como fue surgiendo todo y haciéndose realidad. Esto es este blog. Un log donde finalmente veremos si este sueño progresa, o si es una de las tantas ideas locas que tuvimos con Germán y que no logramos realizar. Ojalá sea la primera.

Allyson observed me today, and not for the choicest of classes. It was with 4medio, whom I rarely see thanks to a) tests, b) meetings, and c) God only knows what. I had to start a new grammar concept – the passive voice – and I did it in a far too complicated way. I tend to overestimate the girls because they are quite good, but I also forget how difficult English is for non-natives. I need to think of how hard the concept would be to learn in Spanish, French, German, whatnot.

After the debrief Allyson left me with some great ideas, and if I implement one of them, you may have some cute photos of my students tomorrow. Nag me about that.

On my way back up the hill from dropping off Allyson with Jen at el Jardin del Profeta (amazing little vegetarian cafe owned by the genial Patricio, further proof that all Patricios are little angels), I ran into 2 tourists. The first was holding the Chile Lonely Planet book, so I approached him to offer help. The Californian said he’d heard that the hills were dangerous, so I sent him to el Jardin del Profeta to pick up a tourist map, which according to Chris only contains (relatively) safe areas. The second was a Romanian who approached me with broken Spanish to take a photo of him in front of the hill. As soon as he discovered that I a) spoke English and b) was not Chilean, he began speaking fluent English riddled with the f-bomb. He invited me to grab a beer, and I graciously declined. I had ”a meeting with my director.” Lies, I know, do not become us. Neither do garabatos.

During our immense lunch break of 2hrs (“Just for Monday, you volunteers need to find your way around the city.”), I ate lunch at La Naturalista, a vegetarian restaurant down the block. The middle picture above shows what Millie, Hannah, Ryan, and I ate if you start on the left and look clockwise. I had a plate of mashed potatoes, yogurt with honey, and wispy-warm tea.

After eating, Millie, Maureen, Grace and I went to Ripley’s where Millie and I bought towels. This hostel, unlike Hostel Londres, does not provide towels, so I bought a basic one for showering. It’s sunrise yellow, so it’ll match most of my stuff at home.

I realize I’ve neglected showing you the streets of Santiago, and so I wanted to show you a snippet in photos:

To the left you will see my room, the one I share with Steph, Jen, and Kristy. The colors are bright and melony, but the space is limited. I’m not a morning person…. so I may have to get up earlier and get ready before the others so I don’t show more of my grumpy side. I need my space in the wee hours. Sigh.

Norman, as it turned out, has a super/phenomenal/angelic voice, and he sang us a song that he himself had written. We caught it on video, which I´ll put up here if Maureen allows me to. Patricio asked me to dance with him during the video, so you can see us in the background dancing while Maureen laughs. Later we met their sister Graecia, and we quizzed them on their colors in English. All three did very well and seemed quite well-behaved students. Overall we had an excellent practice in Spanish and an excellent experience with Chileans. (They´re from Serena, vacationing in Santiago.)

Today, Thursday, July 23, we each taught 15 min of a class. We all did really well, in my opinion, and I received useful, kind constructive criticism. What a great opportunity to improve as a teacher! That´s exactly what I came here for, one of my top three goals! (The other two being fluency in Spanish and the cultural experience, both of which benefited from my chit chat with Norman and Patricio.)

I went up to Santa Lucia with Ryan, Roman, and Hannah during one break, and we saw the Andes in their full glory. Once again, I didn´t have my camera, but Roman did, and I´ll try to get it from him for y´all. There we ran into pairs of Chilean students here in Santiago for an English camp, and they had the task of finding certain people. For example, they asked us if we were from Australia because that was one type of person that they had to find. I helped with having eaten Chilean cuisine (chorizo, empanada, cazuela, etc.)

We had Spanish class again with Arvanik, who speaks no English, and he asked us questions about our stay here and what we thought of the city. It was a simple but effective way of getting us to communicate in Spanish in a real-life way. We´re done with our Spanish classes for orientation, or at least the ones with Arvanik, but he´s invited us all to go grab a drink with him tomorrow night.

For lunch I ate at the De Lunas Cafe, and I had pasta papas, or something similar to a Shepherd´s Pie with raisins and a hint of sweetness from the sugar on top. Thumbs up! The sweetness was a bit odd as I became full, but I´d get that again.

Whoa. So much glitchy goodness and dubstep on this lineup. I can’t wait to see this camp. As far as I know, The Do Lab has been absent from the playa for the past 2 years so, it will be great to have them back. No set times listed yet, but here is an artist list. (source: tribe.net) Picks: Tipper, Bassnectar, Oscure, Kraddy, Kitty-d, An-Ten-Nae… just about everybody really.

For the first time ever The Do LaB and El Circo are joining forces to create an unforgettable visual sound camp, Simpler Times, at Burning Man this year.

The merging of these iconic communities of San Francisco and Los Angeles is sure to produce one of the most epic and memorable places to be on the Playa with the creative explosions, amazing musicians and mind blowing performances.

El otro día en un momento de introspección y reflexión, le pinté bigotes a la pendeja de la publicidad de fibertel (?). Asi que se me ocurrió que podía ser una buena idea para algún comodín fotográfico y hoy parecía un buen día para hacerlo.

Es gracioso ir por la calle y encontrarse con un stencil con la cara de uno… si, ya sé que debe ser algún personaje que no ubico, pero ese stencil es demasiado parecido a mi (cuando era niño).

Igual, yo mantengo las esperanzas de que alguien haya encontrado mi foto en la página de mono bolero y haya hecho un stencil con mi cara, o que algún fanático del topo giggio todavía recuerde las épocas en que yo cantaba en el coro de niños que acompañaba al topo y salía en canal 9 con berugo carámbula. O por ahi es alguien que me está buscando  y entónces hace stencils con mi cara y los pinta en el barrio de Belgrano…

Aunque se compruebe que el stencil es de otra cosa, para mi… es mi cara…

Aca les dejo un par de fotos mías de mis épocas de “ñino”, tengo la idea de que debería haber una que es más parecida a la del stencil, pero no la encontré…
