Anyway, go check out his work:

Wired Magazine recently posted an article on Patrick Blanc that showcases his recent green wall for the Athenaeum Hotel in London. Amidst the glowing praise and gorgeous photos, what I found interesting was the slagging going on in the article comments. Lots of criticism regarding the expensive upkeep (both in terms of water/fertilizer and maintenance efforts), the technological limitations of green walls, and the poor track record of sustainability for green walls. Food for thought. Art at what price? There is also a link to building a green roof – a Wired How-to.

Was wollen wir dagegen unternehmen?

Schaut Euch mal die Homepage Vertical Garden by Patrick Blanc an. Hier sieht man, welches Potenzial in diesem Prinzip steckt.

The first time I saw the work of Patrick Blanc, I thought it was messy. But it grew on me after a while. I realised it had the same appeal as the big old trees I love. Dense, unruly and fabulously green.

These plant walls, as he likes to call them, are vertical gardens, and aren’t meant to look prim and landscaped like something out of House & Garden. They are meant to be decidedly unkempt. They are allowed to grow naturally, they are not pruned, and that’s what makes them beautiful.

Lush, warm and wild.

Patrick Blanc is the inventor of these mur végétal that flourish without soil, on a durable frame of metal, PVC and a special felt.

He’s been creating these botanical tapestries since 1988 for the Musée des Sciences et Techniques de La Villette, as well as private homes and public spaces all over the world, but is only gaining fame fairly recently and international attention thanks to several high profile jobs, such as the Marche des Halles in d’Avignon (2005), the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris by Jean Nouvel (2006), the Caixa Forim in Madrid by architects Herzog and de Meuron (2007), and the Melbourne Central (2008), just to name a few.

His fascination began when he was just 12 and planted flowers on a mesh frame along the walls of his parents’ garden in the Paris suburbs. Reading about how rooting plants in water can purify them of nitrates, he experimented with rhododendrons in his aquarium, training them to climb the wall.

Fascinated by plants that can survive without soil and in low light, he later took up botany and studied the phenomena and travelled to Malaysia and Thailand in 1972 to observe how plants grow on rocks and in the underbrush.

He experiments still, creating vertical carpets in his home, which was where Andrée Putman, French interior architect and designer, first saw his work and hired him to create a much-publicised vertical garden in the courtyard of Pershing Hall hotel in Paris in 2001.

Blanc’s vertical gardens don’t need soil as soil is merely a mechanical support. Only water and the necessary minerals the plants need dissolved in a solution are used, together with light and carbon dioxide for photosynthesis to happen. It’s like art by hydroponics, which is just the man-made way of recreating what already happens in nature.

Take the plants that grow on rocks, tree trucks and cliffs. In Malaysia, in 2,500 out of 8,000 known species are growing without any soil. In these vertical walls, water delivery is automated, trickling down by gravity as it would in nature on the surface of a cliff or rock.

Whether he is blanketing buildings with green or dressing walls indoors with plants, green is beautiful. It would be great to see more of his work around. Mother Nature needs all the help she can get from mankind.

On a final green note, don’t forget to reuse, reduce and recycle — stuff you probably know already.

Happy Earth Day, everyone.

“The vertical garden is something closer to a living painting than a garden.”

- Patrick Blanc

The French botanist Patrick Blanc has been creating what Ping Magazine calls, “organic wallpapers” since 1988.

To replace soil, Blanc uses a lightweight structure composed of a metal frame, a 1cm thick sheet of pvc, and a layer of felt. The plants put roots through the felt without damaging the walls of the building, and a mineral complex mixed with water flows evenly through the living tapestry from the top of the wall.

Blanc notes that the walls can reduce energy consumption because they have an insulating effect similar to that of green roofs and that they cleanse the air with the same or greater efficiency than plants with their roots in the ground. The vertical gardens require minimal human intervention after installation and can support richly textured plant life over a multitude of surfaces.

This scientist/landscape architect has even created a dress out of living plants:

, Bollati Boringhieri, Torino, 2008 pag. 53:

Hello. I found this on a random environmentalist art search and really liked all the green. Bit of a nature fan me. I like the way he fuses city space with rural landscapes and the way he reclaims the previously built on space, I think Wordsworth and his daffodils would be pleased as it’s quite anti-industrialisation. Plus it fully shits on alan titchmarsh too! woo!

Usually happens that we know works from starchitects and we straight away don’t even think over some details of them which might be produced by kind of anonymous starcollaborators too.

And that is what happens in projects as the Caixa Forum Madrid or the Museé des Arts Premiers Quai Branly, where Patrick Blanc was committed by Herzog and de Meuron and Jean Nouvel respectively, to prepare a green living tapestry as part of the whole project. The list of projects walls, as he likes to call them, he shows in his site is huge and worth having a look.

Το κόστος ενός τέτοιου τοίχου είναι γύρω στα 450 ευρώ ανά 3,3 τ.μ. Φθηνό μάλλον για… έργο τέχνης. Χρειάζονται περίπου 30 φυτά ανά τ.μ. Ο Μπλανκ προτιμά τα φυτά με φύλλωμα και λιγότερο τα λουλούδια. Το πότισμα γίνεται από την κορυφή, αυτόματα. Το συνολικό βάρος ενός τέτοιου κήπου είναι λιγότερο από 30 κιλά ανά τ.μ. Οι Κάθετοι Κήποι όμως είναι διπλά οικολογικοί. Πρώτον, δίνουν μια μοναδική ευκαιρία στους ανθρώπους των μεγαλουπόλεων να έρθουν κοντά στη φύση. Επιπλέον όμως βοηθούν και στη μείωση κατανάλωσης ενέργειας, προστατεύοντας το κτίριο από το κρύο τον χειμώνα και παρέχοντας ένα φυσικό σύστημα δροσίσματος το καλοκαίρι. Προσφέρει επίσης έναν ξεχωριστό τρόπο φυσικού καθαρισμού της ατμόσφαιρας. Ο κύριος Μπλανκ είναι κατηγορηματικός. Οι τοίχοι του είναι οι κήποι του μέλλοντος. «Το οριζόντιο έχει τελειώσει. Ο κάθετος χώρος είναι ακόμα ελεύθερος» διατείνεται. Ποιος μπορεί να τον αμφισβητήσει;
