Patrick Burgoyne is the Editor of Creative Review, a magazine that launched in 1980 – it is now the leading magazine for visual culture. At their heart is the printed magazine (it’s ruddy splendid. and square), but their Creative Review empire has now grown to include their iPad app, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and YouTube…as well as a whole host of conferences, events, awards…and breatheeee.

In the Business of Photography seminar, Patrick spoke to us about all things digital, here are a few of his wise words!

Print is not dead, it’s just different.

- Patrick

Patrick on digital media…

Digital media demands a different tone, you can’t expect to write the same way for all your digital channels as you do for your printed ones.

Get used to responses! Instead of the occasional letter, readers are now able to respond instantly – be prepared for people that dislike what you’ve done.

Identify people who comment and interact with you regularly, these become logical people to be involved with because they are clearly enthusiastic about your brand.

There is no cost involved with digital media, apart from your time, just do it and experiment – see what works and what doesn’t.

Twitter is the 2nd biggest driver of traffic to our website after Google

- Patrick

If your digital media takes off, you may need designated people in your team to run and manage content.

We now have a bigger Creative Review community because of digital media!

I’m speaking at the Cheltenham Design Festival on Saturday the 21st. If anyone is in the area please do come along…it should be great. I’ll be part of a panel discussion: Secret Places, Hidden Design.

This has all come about because Lizzi Walton who runs Stroud International Textiles asked me to be involved. She is presenting the Gloucester Cathedral leg of my Architecture of Cloth, Colour and Space Tour. Lizzi has also organised an event called Parings II – Conversations and Collaborations

It’s all happening in Gloucestershire!

Here is a very interesting commentary (by Patrick Burgoyne, Creative Review, click HERE) about the official artists’ posters for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Patrick contrasts the artwork featured in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games with the offering presented for next year’s sporting spectacle.

What do you think of the results? Do you think the paintings chosen represent the Games, London and modern art in the best light?! Do you think that you and the three year old next door could have done better?
