natasha poly is represented by women model management. she appears editorially for the january issue of russian vogue, as seen. it seems as though they take every opportunity to put natasha in jil sander. i understand she was the face of the fall campaign but its like, style her in new shit. for the remainder of the spread she rocks everything from balenciaga & escada to nina ricci & lanvin. you had to know that they would take one last opportunity to photograph the heeless nina ricci’s before they go out of season. images for this spread shot by patrick demarchelier. styling for this edit done by panos yiapanis, who styled natasha’s fall covers & editorial spreads for muse magazine. natasha is sure to have another amazing for 2010, this marks the beginning. i love this edit, the styling is everything & the last shot looks very high end, elegant & expensive.

I thought this was really interesting about what model was most featured in Vogue editorials this ye

I thought this was really interesting about what model was most featured in Vogue editorials this year and who shoots them. I first read the article on Huffington Post (link to the article below) where they name Karlie Kloss the most booked model across all editions.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/15/karlie-kloss-books-most-e_n_392506.html

Even more interesting is the article they referenced from Live Journal. Here it lists the top booked models and photographers by each international edition.

http://community.livejournal.com/fashin/4623046.html

Here is the short list, but the link has a lot more info.

THE TOP 12
in general descending order, not all Vogue editions are accounted for
all you need to know is that KarKlo and Demarchelier basically slaughtered everyone else

Read my red lips, so she says.

It’s almost 4:00 pm, and I can’t keep avoiding Skylar. She’s been in the psychiatrist office waiting room almost four hours now.

But first I’ll sneak down the side door way and staircase and smoke a cigarette. I’ll need one before seeing her. Things have gotten out of control. I race out the back door and leave Skylar waiting a bit longer, I have to have some free time to think of what to say, or maybe I shouldn’t say anything. Always nice that way. I laugh to myself.

I’m pacing back and forth, sucking down a cigarette, I know a doctor, stupid, right? Anyway I spot Skylar walking out looking fumed. I try to dodge below the parking garage, but she sees me. She doesn’t even look at me, just darts her eyes at me and then skirts them towards the front door of her boyfriend’s hummer. He’s the one who I owed and got me into this whole mess with Skylar.

I must admit the sex is mind-blowing though.

Last night, I arrived at Nolita’s Clic Gallery to find it fully packed with fans and friends of Patrick Demarchelier, who was doing a book signing to promote his newly released monograph. The crowd was so deep, it took nearly 5 minutes for me to check my coat, and make it to the back of the store to get in line for the signing. I recognized a lot of familiar faces in the crowd, and even made a few new friends while I waited. After a short wait, it was my turn to meet Patrick.

He comes across as a very quiet, gentle man. Not quite shy, but close. He was most animated while talking in his native language to his fellow Frenchmen and women, but remained friendly and approachable for everyone else as well. I had my book signed, and asked him to pose for a photo, for which he kindly obliged:

Honestly, I’m surprised I didn’t blink too. : )

While I was mingling, I spotted the most amazingly dressed woman in attendance:

Color! In a sea of black. Wearing a gorgeous dress she made herself from old fabrics.

The huge crowd in attendance.

A few of the prints from the exhibition:

More Patrick.

Before I left, I wanted to ask Mr. Demarchelier a question. When I asked what sort of advice he had for young, up and coming photographers he said “work very, very hard”. When he first said it, I almost giggled for a second. It’s so simple, yet so true! Yet most people don’t do it. I think in the internet age, when any jackass can pick up a camera, shoot some drunk girls and be “a photographer”, his advice is like gold. Probably the smartest career advice anyone has ever given me. It made me want to run home and start shooting fashion stories asap.

I also got Patrick to pose for another photo for me:

And proceeded to get so nervous taking it I used my flash when I should not have.

As I was retrieving my coat, I bumped into two of my new friends, April and Christine:

We had a very animated discussion about photography, blogging, and Michael Jackson after I drank a glass of champagne. Doing so before dinner might not have been the brightest idea, but it sure was fun.

I still haven’t made it through the whole thing, but this is one of my very favorite photos from the book:

Cate Blanchett.

My signed copy:

I can’t believe I almost missed this event! This year, I met three people I truly admire. Now all I have to do is meet David LaChapelle, Ellen Von Unwerth and Trent Reznor. And bring Ansel Adams and Man Ray back from the dead, and I’ll have met all my big influences!

She was glad of presents, however, and when I gave her, perhaps, a new little purse of red lacquered leather there might be two or three gold pieces inside it. As a matter of fact, she laughed at me over the red purse. It was charming, but a bargain, and no longer in fashion. In these matters, about which up to that time I was as little learned as in any language of the Eskimos, I learned a great deal from Maria. Before all else I learned that these playthings were not mere idle trifles invented by manufacturers and dealers for the purposes of gain. They were, on the contrary, a little or, rather, a big world, authoritative and beautiful, many sided, containing a multiplicity of things all of which had the one and only aim of serving love, refining the senses, giving life to the dead world around us, endowing it in a magical way with new instruments of love, from powder and scent to the dancing show, from ring to cigarette case, from waist-buckle to handbag. This bag was no bag, this purse no purse, flowers no flowers, the fan no fan. All were the plastic material of love, of magic and delight. Each was a messenger, a smuggler, a weapon, a battle cry.

When opening the December issue of Vogue, one is prepared for the visual assault of holiday themed fashion fantasy, but the most compelling image may be this simple Demarchelier beauty shot. The neon hair, grey Alexander Wang jersey dresses and melancholy stares of Viktoriya Sasonkina and Karlie Kloss, combine to create something beautiful, modern and unexpected. As uncomplicated as the picture is, it still managed to shake me. Here is a concise distillation of everything I am enjoying at the moment and it leaves me wanting more. What I wouldn’t give for 12 more pages like this!

THE OLDEST 28-YEAR-OLD IN THE WORLD

I still don’t have a Twitter. I joined Facebook earlier this year, after being constantly bombarded by the electronic Facebook invites of my college mates from art school, I finally gave in. Sometimes, updating status, replying to messages, wall tags and photo comments are something I do to keep me company while retouching some of the images I took in Photoshop, in between photo shoots, waiting for my flight, waiting for my luggage, waiting for a friend in a coffee shop, just finished reading a book or done my research for my novel, Facebook somehow sneaked in to my routines, should I be worried? For all my growing readers and followers out there, I appreciate your emails and support, I attended a worldwide blogger’s 2-day conference over the weekend to upgrade myself and literally everyone (about 200 bloggers, web developers, writers, coders) has a Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, together with their website and other contact details in their business cards or their blogs, I feel prehistoric, the oldest 28-year-old in the world who don’t Twit and a Facebook amateur compared to my niece who have used Facebook and Twitter since birth, now I’m worried.

MR. IRVING PENN 92

My favorite feature in Facebook is the “top five” list of everything you can think of, top five movies, top five sandwiches, top five Britney song, top five Sarah Palin books (although she has only one, hopefully), of course I don’t want to be left out by the other cool kids, so I made a couple of list of my own, like the hit “Top 5 Famous Dead People I Would Like To Invite For Dinner”– James Dean, Charles Darwin, Jesus Christ, Adolf Hitler, and Albert Einstein (I’m definitely sure 3 of them are vegetarian and I definitely got a lot of fb comments for that), and after browsing The New York Magazine in LAX, Aug 16, ‘09 interview of the famed photographer Annie Leibovitz (59 yrs. old), “Photography is not something you retire from, Photographers live to a very old age and work until the end.” (Lartigue lived to be 92, Steichen 93, and Cartier-Bresson 94.) “Irving Penn is going to be 92 next month, and he’s still working.” Leibovitz said. I quickly made another “top 5″ last September 13 at 5:53 am (it’s still somewhere on my facebook wall), “The World’s Oldest Living Iconic Photographers” where Mr. Irving Penn topped the list at 92, shortly after a month (October 7), Ms. Lillian Bassman (92) took Mr. Penn’s spot at the top 5.

FIVE LEGENDARY LIVING LENSMEN

It’s a youth-obsessed industry, a working fashion model’s age brackets from 14 to 21 and less than 1% of them work up to their 40’s (Claudia Schiffer 39, Christy Turlington 40, Naomi Campbell 39, and Kate Moss 35), but great photographers get to last twice or more than any great supermodel’s career in a lifetime which is fascinating and inspiring for a “late twenties” photographer like me, their career’s longevity and their resilience are something that a lot of “top” fashion photographers in their 30s or 40s at the moment can only dream of. It would be interesting to know if any of the five legendary living lensmen and women Twits or have Facebook “top fives” of their own. Two caucasian women, three caucasian men, two immigrants, three american-born, one photojournalist, one portrait photographer, two fashion/celebrity photographers, one fashion/art photographer, three have started with Harper’s Bazaar Magazine, and all based in the east coast, four in new york, one in miami, here are the updated list of “The World’s Oldest Living Iconic Photographers” still working today.

A painter and an American fashion photographer, born in Brooklyn (1917) to a jewish immigrant parents from Russia (1905).

Bassman’s work as a fashion photographer started at Junior Bazaar (1940s) and Harper’s Bazaar (1950 -1965), by the 70s she abandoned fashion photography to work on her own photo projects, resulting to 40 years of life’s work (films and prints) thrashed, some salvaged hundred images re-appeared and her work was re-appreciated in the 90s. Her photography style is the high contrast, grainy finish, and geometric camera angles of her subjects.

In an industry ruled by “White Men (gay or straight)”**, Bassman is now one of the last two “great women” standing. And that is still an understatement for me.

**a future article you’ll find here in Dangerously Naive.

An important American art/photojournalist, born in Zurich, Switzerland (1924) to a wealthy Jewish family.

Mr. Frank emigrated to the United States in 1947 and like Ms. Bassman started as a fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar. He travelled to South America and Europe after the brief stint with the magazine, and like Ms. Bassman worked on his more personal works, and came back in the 1950’s to NYC for a group exhibition in MOMA and then moved to Paris. His frustrations with the control of the editors over his work colored his fashion magazine experience, nonetheless he moved back to New York, 3 years after the exhibition and worked as a freelance photojournalist and completely abandoning fashion photography altogether.

In 1958, “The Americans” was published, his widely celebrated photographic book cemented his position in the history of American photography.

Like Mr. Frank, Mr. Demarchelier emigrated to New York (1975), Elle, Marie Claire and 20 Ans Magazine was the first stints he had as a fashion photographer after working as a freelance photographer/ assistants to such greats as Cartier-Bresson. He later worked for Harper’s Bazaar (like Mr. Frank and Ms. Bassman) and Vogue (1992-present). Demarchelier also is behind several blue chip campaigns including Dior, Louis Vuitton, Celine, TAG Heuer, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Lacoste, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, and became a household name after the 2006’s Meryl Streep film The Devil Wears Prada with the lines- “Did Demarchelier confirm?”, and “I have Patrick!”.

I was flipping through Australian Vogue and saw an article on this fashion editorial from 1983. What really caught my attention was the white shirt looking jumpsuit. I thought it was the perfect reinvention of a t-shirt and want to attempt my own recreation.

Quote from Vogue 2009 on these images “Early-Eighties fashion was still hitched to the tail end of the seventies, and funny or off-beat and bewildering. Demarchelier’s photographs, however; rejoiced in a breezy naturalism that needed no eludication.”

…

From the time it opened its doors back in the hedonistic ’80s, Indochine has exerted an inexorable pull on the famous, the glamorous, and the fabulous, and unlike its equally glittery peers—the Mudd Club, Studio 54, the Palladium—it’s still standing. In fact, this year is Indochine’s 25th anniversary, and Rizzoli has just published a book documenting its finest hours.

Indochine: Stories, Shaken and Stirred features a combination of collages and Polaroids taken at private parties plus photos from the ’80s and ’90s by Patrick McMullan, Patrick Demarchelier, and Roxanne Lowit. There’s also work by many of the artists who frequented the downtown boite, including Julian Schnabel, Ross Bleckner, and Francesco Clemente; and Salman Rushdie, Moby, Julianne Moore, and Bob Colacello have contributed essays.

“The beauty of Indochine is that everybody has all these dear-diary moments, but nobody ever has ever really talked about them!” designer Narciso Rodriquez told Fashion Weekly Daily at a party at Bergdorf Goodman last Thursday celebrating the book.

Jean-Marc Houmard, a co-owner of Indochine, remarked to Vogue that he’d been working as a law-firm intern when he took a night job as a busboy there a year after it opened. “There was this sense of fabulousness,” he noted, “especially when I started working there in 1985.”

..

I asked Roxanne, who signed books at the party, about how she felt looking back at those times and at her photos. I wondered if it made her nostalgic. “It’s fun to see them. It was a fun time then,” she said quietly. “I don’t think about going back in time, though. I think about going forward. I always say my next picture is going to be my best one.”
