Thanks to Seth Reynolds we can see some pics from Exit/In gig that took place on December 12 2009 in Nashville. In the pics we can see Brendan Benson and his boys, Cory Chisel and his Crew as well as Patrick Keeler (it seems as he played some songs with them). Thanks again man for sharing!!

As you know Cory Chisel has been the opening band of most Brendan Benson gigs in Europe, also Mr. Benson has collaborated in the making of Death won’t send a letter, this band last album. Here we have some pics of what the recording process was, in which we can see, apart from Brendan Benson, other members of The Raconteurs.

Broken Boy Soldiers The Raconteurs 2006 Third Man Records Ah, Jack White, how restless you are.

Broken Boy Soldiers

The Raconteurs

2006

Third Man Records

Ah, Jack White, how restless you are. Here, we have a guy who’s extremely successful with his original band The White Stripes, and between albums he starts a completely new band, The Raconteurs. Personally, I prefer the indie-pop of Brendan Benson’s solo output to that of The White Stripes (or The Greenhornes for that matter). nonetheless, this album feels completely like a band. They know that they’re side-band comprised of already acknowledged musician’s, but it sounds like they don’t give a damn.

They know what they are, they know who they’re influenced by, and they know what they can do. This self-aware nature of The Raconteurs lends itself to developing an album of awesome songs, if not wholly original.

In keeping with The White Stripe’s tradition of putting the single as the leading song the disc, “Steady, as She Goes” kicks off Broken Boy Soldiers. A snare drums cracks already gaining the audience’s attention. This is followed by one of the coolest bass lines ever, keeping a solid groove for the band to play into. Guitar chords break in, and White’s vocals come in with a quick verse. The chorus speeds in (if you haven’t heard the song, I don’t know where you must’ve been), and we’re treated to one of the best hooks on the album (So good in fact, that the aforementioned person who never heard the song could easily be singing along by the halfway point). My favorite touch in the song is the harmonies, always (I repeat, always) making me sing along (“You found yourself a friend that knows you well”). But this isn’t that straightforward of a rock song. The last verse breaks into chaos as two vocal lines play catch-up, and a guitar line tries to drown both out.

Benson’s “Hands” comes directly in. While it’s not as good as “Steady”, Benson knows how to write a good rock song. The lyrics are certainly better, and even enhanced with White’s harmony (a major talent this group has). About two minutes in, the song breaks down, completely revamping what you think a rock song should sound like until the chorus kicks in again.

As I said, The Raconteurs know directly where they have been influenced, and the title track sounds like they’re channeling Led Zeppelin. The guitar almost sounds Indian in nature, and the band enters with Zep-inspired hard rock. Patrick Keeler on drums, in fact, has a very Bonham-inspired beat. But the song is brilliant, the fact that they don’t try to hide from their inspirations makes it that much better.

“Intimate Secretary” follows this pattern (after a lengthy lead-in). One of the best songs on the album, it would have fit in with the Kinks’ mid-60’s albums. In fact, the song sounds more like the Apples in Stereo than the White Stripes. The acid rock lyrics (“I’ve got a rabbit, it likes to hop, I’ve got a girl and she likes to shop”) sound vaguely familiar, although resoundingly original at the same time. The screeching vocals for the bridge (or is it the chorus?) stop the song for a metaphorical breath, before diving back in to the madness.

What follows is a Benson-penned song slowing the mood down. “Together” suffers from being the most cliched song on the album (“You got to learn to live, and live and learn”? Really?) However, it’s not a terrible song. It accomplishes its task of breaking up the mood on the album, and even offers hints at just how talented Benson is at arranging. During the instrumental breaks, the band fractures the song with a syncopated triplet rhythm, before following along the designated ballad-formula. Other than that, the song is just a minute or so too long.

“Level” meanwhile brings The Raconteurs back into their weirdness and rock roots. After a pretty cool intro, they bring back their blues-rock song-crafting, sounding more like The Greenhornes then ever before. (This should be no surprise as two of the four members are in that band). However, the song sounds like it was created to focus on the double-harmony guitar solo. The solo itself is weak, not going anywhere. But it’s a short song, which can be forgotten or forgiven.

Meanwhile, “Store Bought Bones” brings in a heavy, syncopated rff with the band sounding kick-ass. The harmony-laden verse tries to sugarcoat the complex arrangement. The bridge itself turns the song around, being catchy and complicated with its key-changing. And then just what we were waiting for: an awesome slinky guitar solo. Beneath the guitar is the head-banging-inducing sounds of the band just bashing out whatever they can, thoroughly enthused. The song even ends with a trading off of instrument licks! It may not be breaking any musical ground, but The Raconteurs know what works, and they know how to make it sound insanely cool as they make it their own.

“Yellow Sun” (after a false-start) shows Benson and White bringing the mood down again, with a largely acoustic number. However, whatever “Together” failed in, “Yellow Sun” completely makes up for. It is in essence just a fun indie-pop song that they are so good at writing.

“Call it a Day” again brings forward an acid-rock contemplation, complete with the harmonic background vocals. But the song only feels like a short pit-stop before the finale.

“Blue Veins” is complete Zeppelin blues-based swamp rock. The intro even features backward drums and guitar. Again the vocals sound like Robert Plant on early Zeppelin blues songs. The song makes no queries about what it’s supposed to be. But the Raconteurs aren’t just going to do half-ass it. After an interrupting piano sound, they turn sounds (including vocals) backwards, breaking the song down. And in their certain fashion, bring it back in perfectly. It’s a strange choice to end the album with, but works nonetheless.

And after the album is done, you can easily see why Jack White chose to go off on this project. The musicians are some of the most talented players out there, and having four people in the band (instead of just him and the, I’m sorry, less capable Meg White – I do like her! I really do!) brings in freedom that is missing from Jack White’s other band. The Raconteurs are just what they need to be, an extremely artistic, extremely adept group that writes songs like their influences. It’s the band everyone wishes they could be in – one that does cover material but makes it their own. However, in this case, it’s their own material. The entire album may not be all mind-blowing, but it is very impressive.

Yes, I’m back. Did you miss me? Did you wonder where went I go for those few days? Well its called The Sims 3 decided to blow up my computer AND laptop leaving me basically unable to post anything. How rad is that?

Anyway, off to the real news….

Indie pop genius and Jack White sidekick, Brendan Benson, will finally be releasing his newest solo record on August 18 via ATO Records. Benson who is known to most as part of The Raconteurs, of course started off as a solo artist with a string of catchy and very poppy records. This will be his 4th album titled ’My Old, Familar Friend,’ which was recorded both in Nashville and England, both a long way from his Detroit roots. The first single has yet to be released but we do know it is titled ‘A Whole Lot Better’. Benson will also be doing a solo tour this summer which gives the Raconteurs a nice little break. Hopefully this time around Benson will get the full credit and attention he deserves that hasn’t always been present on his prior records.

The Raconteurs are, in my opinion, the best band out right now. They are a supergroup of sorts, made up of musicians from Detroit and Cincinnati, although they officially say they’re from Nashville. The band is made up of singer/guitarists Jack White (White Stripes) and Brendan Benson, bassist Jack Lawrence (The Greenhornes) and drummer Patrick Keeler (The Greenhornes). The fourth track on Consolers of the Lonely, their second album which was released in the Spring of 2008, is called “Old Enough.” It’s a great rock song that sounds like it could have come straight off of Led Zeppelin III with the fiddle that carries the song.

In a display of what can happen when a bunch of truly great musicians come together, this video is a bluegrass remake of the song featuring Ricky Skaggs, a 12-time Grammy Award winning country and bluegrass musician, and Ashley Monroe, an up-and-coming country singer. You should enjoy it.

If you aren’t familiar with the song, listen here to the original first before watching the video.

Jack White is a man and a musician who finds it hard to sit still. For instance, after breaking up

Jack White is a man and a musician who finds it hard to sit still. For instance, after breaking up with actress Renee’ Zellewenger , White got married to a red-headed model a few months later. When it comes to music Jack White can’t sit still either. When I say he can’t sit still I don’t mean in the Ryan Adams sort of way(Ryan, slow down I can’t keep up!) but White does not enjoy taking a break. In the music industry it has been proven that making an album too quick is bad for business. Just ask Hootie and the Blowfish. Anyway, in the last ten years, White along with his former wife or sister/fake sister- Meg White- depending on what rumor you want to believe, have made some of the better rock albums. Unlike Hootie, Jack and Meg do not have to depend on VH-1 or the radio for there musical success nor do they have to worry about..what’s that thing called?…oh, yeah….SUCKING!.

I think the White Stripes album “Elephant” is one of the better Rock albums of the last ten years. After that album was made, White was not content to take a break and let the air settle which might have been advised. .He had a part in the movie Cold Mountain where he met girlfriend Renee’ Zellewenger and he also recorded alot of the music for the movie.

After Cold Mountain wrapped, Jack and Meg recorded the album “Get Behind Me Satan” which I thought was ok but basically I was disappointed. It was like Jack White saying “Look how talented I am. Look it all the things that I can do.” It seemed like they were going all over the place in many different directions. It was alright but I would give it a B or B+, not an “A” like I would give the 3 albums that preceded it, nevertheless still pretty damn good. The duo quickly followed “Get Behind Me Satan” with the album Icky Thump which is about just as good particularly the single Icky Thump. The album is good but basically is a victim of the earlier albums great dark shadow. Still, Jack couldn’t sit still. He got together with Detroit artist Brendon Benson to write some songs and he recruited Patrick Keeler on drums, and Jack Lawrence on bass guitar, banjo; and recorded the album “Broken Boy Soldiers” under the band name “The Raconteurs”. The album is part garage rock part singer/song writer. There was a sort of a back and forth between White and Benson with the song writing/vocal duties. It doesn’t blow you way like the White Stripes albums Elephant or De Stij but it is a very solid rock album. The songs are not that complicated but who needs complication in music or life. I really enjoyed the album “Broken Boy Soldiers”. I have listened to it hundreds of times. Broken Boy Soldiers is the catchiest thing White has ever done. That being said with “COTL” I think White has taken a step forward(yet again!).

The Raconteurs album “Consolers of the Lonely” is a little different than “ Broken Boy Soldiers”. While the songs are still catchy like “Broken Boy Soldiers” the musical arrangements and the songs themselves are not as simple on “Consolers of the Lonely.” There is much more musical accompaniment on “COTL” than on “BBS”. There are horn arrangements as well as a Hammond B-3 on a few tracks. White goes wide range on this more than any of his White Stripes albums but the difference is that on this record all the wide range or “look at how diverse and talented I am” works on this record. Songs like the single “Old Enough” sings “Maybe when your old enough, you’ll act not so tough!” garage rock mixed with a bluegrass string accompaniment.

One of the many positives about Consolers for the Lonely and just from being in a bigger band is that White for once does not feel the need to let his guitar dominate the piece like on a song like “The Switch and the Spur” letting the piano and the bass guitar and horns do most of the work for the majority of the song. White’s songwriting has improved significantly on this album compared to earlier work. On early recordings a lot of songs were not very together and sometimes just didn’t make any sense. If it sounded like a good blues song, he would do it. Not that it sounded bad or even average, it’s just these songs are much more pulled together, much more concise, and tighter than earlier work. Before, White would just flex his guitar muscles for everyone to see but sometimes the lyrics didn’t make any sense. I didn’t care because the guitar playing was so amazing that I didn’t feel the need to care nor should you. This isn’t the case on Consolers of the Lonely. On early works, White would use lot of different musical arrangements on albums like “Get Behind Me Satan” but it appeared to be in one giant cluster. This is not the case on “COTL”. Everything is arranged in the right place and nothing feels squished. This also probably the most produced album White has ever released, lots of double tracks to make instrumentals sound fuller. It’s done in a way where it does not sound like White and company are complete sell outs kind of like the Kings of Leon are accused of, so it still sounds cool. I really like this album “Consolers of the Lonely”. Below is my song by song notes —

The Raconteurs (Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence, Patrick Keeler and Jack White) finish their new album

The Raconteurs (Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence, Patrick Keeler and Jack White) finish their new album in early March, and here it is released already in late March. But is it good? Well, in a word, yes. Some might say very good, in fact. If their debut album was an exercise in pop, Consolers Of The Lonely is a full on rock record, rock with an often distinctly 60’s and 70’s feel, clear from the opening notes of the title track and then the first single, “Salute Your Solution,” which follows in short order, right down to the stunner of a final track, the mini-epic “Carolina Drama.” There’s country and blues thrown into the mix, too, and some wicked good guitar playing. Though I liked a lot of Broken Boy Soldiers, I can’t say I really loved any of it. Consolers Of The Lonely, however, is right down my alley. I think it’s good enough to stand along the best work the various members of the band have done outside the Raconteurs, plus it’s as fun to listen to as all get out. Rock fans rejoice, you have a hell of a cool album in store for you. Standout cuts: “Consolers Of The Lonely,” “Salute Your Solutions,” “Five On The Five” and “Carolina Drama.”

Alors, un post un petit peu plus constructif.

Une petite photo pour commencer (jolies nouvelles coupes de cheveux)

Et ensuite, le bulletin myspace qui a été envoyé pour annoncer la venue de l’album :

The Raconteurs are happy to announce that in one week’s time their second album, entitled “Consolers Of The Lonely”, will be available EVERYWHERE Tuesday, March 25th.

“Album” meaning: full length vinyl, CD and digital formats; and “everywhere” meaning: local mom and pop Indie retailers, corporate superstores, supermarkets, iTunes, Amazon, the band’s own website and any other location that could get the record up and going this quickly (some places couldn’t move this fast, so they will join in as soon as they can).

It contains 14 new recordings and is being released globally on Third Man Records in conjunction with our marketing/distribution partners, XL Recordings and Warner Brothers Records.

The album was mastered and completed in the first week of March. It was then taken immediately to a vinyl pressing plant. Then to a CD pressing plant. Then preparations to sell it digitally began. March 25th became the soonest date to have it available in EVERY FORMAT AT ONCE. The band have done no interviews or advertisements for this record before this announcement.

The purpose: to get the album to the fans as soon as possible and as we promised. We wanted to get this record to fans, the press, radio, etc., all at the EXACT SAME TIME so that no one has an upper hand on anyone else regarding it’s availability, reception or perception.

With this release, The Raconteurs are forgoing the usual months of lead time for press and radio set up, as well as forgoing the all important “first week sales”. We wanted to explore the idea of releasing an album everywhere at once and THEN marketing and promoting it thereafter. The Raconteurs would rather this release not be defined by it’s first weeks sales, pre-release promotion, or by someone defining it FOR YOU before you get to hear it.

Another purpose was to also allow people to have their own choice as to exactly which format they would like to hear the album in IMMEDIATELY, rather than having to wait for their favorite format to become available. The band are also not releasing any version of this record that contains bonus tracks. Musically this album will be the same as the band created it no matter what format it is purchased in (The sound quality of each format however, is a different story. The Raconteurs recommend hearing it on vinyl, but the choice is of course up to the listener).

The band also prefer that fans buy the album as a whole instead of breaking up the tracks, but until iTunes and other digital services allows bands to release their albums with the option of NOT breaking it up, it will be sold in that fashion on those particular sites. On the band’s website however, the album will be sold in its entirety as an mp3 at 320kb bit rate. Also in Japan, fans will be able to download the record via their mobile phones, as that is how a majority of recorded music is consumed there.

The reason we are announcing this release one week ahead of time is because of retail pre-ordering and stocking, information about this album’s imminent release was bound to come to light and could be confusing to fans. Also in the event that the record leaks, we didn’t want this method of release to be seen as a REACTION to such a leak. It’s not. The actual worst thing about a leak is the usual poor sound quality, akin to watching a movie on a wristwatch instead of in a theater. Which for the album’s creators is a bit of a letdown, but again, it is completely up to the listener.

There will be a video up on the internet for the first single, “Salute Your Solution”, on the 25th as well, provided it gets edited in time. We just filmed it the other day!

We hope not to confuse anyone with too many options, or deny them the formats that they like best. The Raconteurs feel very strongly that music has worth and should be treated as such. Thank you to all those who respect music in this fashion, and thank you to our label partners for working with us to get this album to fans in as many formats as possible all at once.

Thank you, and we hope that you enjoy “Consolers Of The Lonely”.

Sincerely,
The Raconteurs
