I’ve been enjoyed spinning textured batts recently, and have been looking for a pattern to use

I’ve been enjoyed spinning textured batts recently, and have been looking for a pattern to use with small amounts of textured handspun. I found a nice simple stitch pattern and came up with this scarf

Unfortunately I only had about 50g of yarn, so the resulting scarf is a bit short – just long enough to tie around my neck ( I really needed 75 – 100g), but I’m pleased with the effect, and will be using the stitch pattern again

Here’s the pattern:

I used approximately DK weight yarn (approx 11 wpi), and started with a foundation Ch of 19 Ch using a 5.5mm hook to make a scarf approx 5 inches wide. The stitch pattern is a multiple of 2 + 1

Using UK terminology**

Row 1: miss 2 Ch, insert hook into next Ch, *2 Half trebles together inserting hook into next 2 Ch, Ch1, repeat from * to end working one half treble into last Ch

Row 2: Ch2, miss 1 st, *2 half trebles together inserting hook into Ch1 space, and then into next stitch, Ch1, repeat from * to end working one half treble into top of turning Ch

Repeat row 2 until scarf is desired length or you run out of yarn, fasten off

**For those using US terminology use half double crochet instead of half treble.

No. Is sheer chiffon overlaid with velvet the most practical choice for winter warmth? No. Is gray one of “my” colors? No. Do I love the material? Yes. Did I buy the material? Of course. I picked up the Silk Velvet Burnout Isadora Grey from Fabric.com . I got 4 yds (45″) at $14.98/yd (-20%) because I’m not entirely sure what I’m going to make with it.

I’m considering making sheer tunic to wear over over a pair of flowing silk pajama bottom pants or a straight fitted skirt. I tentatively selected B4856 as a potential tunic because like how the smooth front means I don’t have any buttons to disrupt the flow of the material. I would make the neck facing in a charmeuse/satin (or even a duponi) in an understated charcoal gray. I’d also make the coordinating bottom (skirt or pajama pants) and a camisole in the same shade/material.

If I wanted a less blocky shape, I could make a skirt & blouse set. I could use the velvet burnout as an overlay on a straight skirt and then make V8194 blouse (using the velvet burnout for the sleeves & neck ruffle). I’m not sure what I’d use for the peplum because I think the two layers of the velvet burnout (one from the peplum and one on the skirt) could be too much.

Now I’ve got to improve my social life so I have somewhere to wear this outfit….

Today has been a grey old day in Amsterdam, but I’ve been continuing with some colourful papercutting to keep the grey at bay.

In stark contrast to the peaceful monochromatic winteriness of the wolf and bear cards that I blogged about earlier in the week my papercutting has taken on a positively summery direction, colour bursting at every seam.

I’ve raided my paper stash – of Japanese origami and washi papers, saved gift-wrap and envelope security patterns, ticket stubs and other ephemera – collected over many years and in many different places…

i ♥ paper

envelope security patterns

… and I have been cutting and layering them to create what I’ve dubbed ‘rare blooms’ (as each papercut-thread-and-sequins-concoction is very much one-of-a-kind).

It’s a completely addictive activity and so much fun!

On the subject of fun… tonight we’ll see Scout perform at the Occii (I think its small size will make it the perfect intimate venue for her, always in my past experiences, intense & exposed performance), and tomorrow we’re off to Brussels (just a hop and a skip across the border) for more musical fun in the form of the Toutpartout festival @ Botanique (can’t wait!
In between all the excellent music this weekend I’ll be participating in the Etsy Holiday Sale (I’m thankful for modern technology and the virtual ’shop’, which allows me to be in more than one place at once . My small garden of rare blooms has taken root over there.

It’s not often when you stumble upon a massive phone OS security bug when searching for a fix

It’s not often when you stumble upon a massive phone OS security bug when searching for a fix to your own phone problem.

I suppose while others enjoy family and race for Black Friday for bargains, I write a post about mobile phone OS bugs. So be it.

Black Friday Goodtimes

Yesterday, Thanksgiving, my 12-year old nephew was searching for the infinite amusement of a [flatulence] app on my T-Mobile myTouch 3G.

Android phones feature a “visual lock/unlock pattern” equivalent to password. Trying to get into the phone he “guessed” too many times. I knew he was guessing the pattern; he was playing with it during the Thanksgiving meal; I had no concern about it because I recalled that it causes the phone to go to a “guessed pattern too many times” screen.

I entered my ID & PW, no dice. I carefully entered it several times; once again no luck. I used my Google ID & PW multiple times daily, so it’s clearly a bug.

Determined to fix my phone immediately (and avoid holiday family over-exposure by hiding in the office for a while), I sat down in the office to search for a fix online. I searched Google for “Android Phone unlock pattern fail myTouch 3G”, and found a nearly 3-month old thread on the topic.

Here is the thread:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3006

It would seem to indicate the bug is rarely seen; only 2 dozen posts or so no matter it affected ME, so then everyone else gets to hear now. The article describes a work-around to get onto phone if your unlock pattern was entered wrong too many times, and your Google Account ID & PW aren’t working – in effect, getting around all security.

To be succinct, to get around lock an an Android phone:

Simply CALL that phone,

Once hanging up , repeatedly press “Home” button rapidly, and you’ll reach the main home screen.

YOU HAVE DEFEATED THE LOCK.

This helped fix my unlock and password bug, but it brings to light that any T-Mobile G1, T-Mobile myTouch, HTC Hero, or Verizon Droid phone can have its unlock pattern feature defeated.

I don’t know about you but I have loads of important information on my phone. I raise the issue publicly to expedite the resolution – this one really needs a fix and it looks like Google has been puttering along for 3 months on it.

Happy hacking-

My aunt is currently renovating her house. Since she knows I deal with interiors and decoration, she called up to ask about a good paint color for her house walls. I suggested to her, why doesn’t she try out wallpapers. Now she hasn’t been to my house yet. So she had no idea about the kind of wonder wallpapers do to our homes. So, when I suggested it her wallpapers, her immediate response was, “Aren’t they limited in patterns?”

This is just another myth about wallpapers. Wallpapers are available in every kind of shade, pattern and texture you can think of. Also as I have already mentioned in my previous post, a variety of other kinds of materials like jute, silk, metallic are also available.

Patterns like stripes and geometric are the evergreen ones. You can get unlimited styles in them. You can always find a new perspective every time you look at them. They never grow old or boring.

Also wallpapers are available in a multiple number of textures which gives a chic finish to your walls. With so much to select from, once you finish wallpapering your house, it will definitely be a dream home!

about everything we have to be thankful for. My thanks? First – my family (including my pets),

about everything we have to be thankful for. My thanks? First – my family (including my pets), friends and health. These things I cannot do without. Second – I’m thankful for a creative mind and at least some talent to do something with it. Life would be boring for me if I were not able to create fun & interesting things. Third – I’m thankful that DH & I are, at least for now, able to provide a home for my SIL. As a developmentally disabled person she doesn’t have many options. It can be frustrating and a struggle at times, but she can also be very funny and absolutely adores the dogs. The dogs are thankful they don’t have to spend everyday in their crates while DH & I are at work. And I am really, really, really thankful that my broken foot is finally mended and I can work on getting normal use & movement back now.

Speaking of my foot…..here’s a photo of the “aftermath”…..and no, the photo won’t spoil your holiday meal…and yes, it explains my newest nickname – Scarfoot. The incision on the right was the first one to insert the pins, the little tiny one just above & to the right of the incision in the middle of my foot was the planned one to remove the crosswise pins. However, with one pin absolutely refusing to come out, I ended up with the bigger incision in the middle of my foot. That one little pin turned a 15 minute procedure into 1 1/2 hr surgery. There are three more scars due to this whole episode – one on the bottom of my foot where the stubborn pin finally came out and two on the side of my foot – one to insert the pins in my 5th metatarsal and one to remove them. I couldn’t take photos of those by myself though. Now my task is exercising and working my foot to regain normal use. And I’m working hard on that!

Now that life is returning to normal around here, or at least pretty normal, I can get on with my knitting projects. Finally finished is a pattern that I started before breaking my foot. So without further ado……introducing the Pamper Yourself Spa Collection…now exclusively available at sandrasingh.com. The pattern includes instructions for all three pieces – Hand towel, Face cloth and Soap sack. Each piece features a unique eyelet border that is easy to work. (Border stitch pattern devised by me, not to be found in any stitch dictionaries or anywhere else.) The Face cloth and Soap Sack are creatively worked from the center out. Knit in Schaefer Susan, a wonderful 100% mercerized pima cotton, this set is quick to knit (perfect if you still need holiday gifts), feels and looks lovely and is sure to be appreciated by any recipient.

So that’s it for today – I want to share some thoughts with you on some of the yarns I’ve been working with but that will be another post. For now – I wish you all a very happy, healthy and safe Thanksgiving holiday! Enjoy good food, friends and companionship. I’m off to figure out what I need to start first for our holiday meal.

Cheers! Jean

Cincinnatian Alli, the lovely lass behind One Pearl Button, attended last Saturday’s Crafty Supermarket in Northside, and was kind enough to post photos of her purchases, including some of our own work!
Above, our Coney Island vintage typography print. Below, the Bar 1132 coasters:

If you didn’t get yours, we still have a few available in the print section of our online shop. Each one is unique, printed on [sometimes layered] test prints from our previous projects. $10, postage paid.

Alli also inexplicably sent us this photo of a couple of wanna-be hipster doofuses. I have no idea what’s going on here. I think he’s saying, “What the what?” and she’s wondering if someone farted. Who are these crazy kids?
