Finaly I got around to starting my own blog. From now on I will have a place to put all my ramblings

Finaly I got around to starting my own blog.

From now on I will have a place to put all my ramblings, mainly having to do with microsofts .net framework. I am mainly working with relatively new .net technologies, which means I am not bogged down old stuff (anything released over 4 years ago can be called old, right! software is sensitive like people, esp. women on that particular subjct)

Currently I am trying to find a way to convert an old style asp.net web application which was written some years back into something which will be better maintainable, but without rewriting everything. Looking at some good way to use the model-view-presenter pattern, but not sure which flavor to use. Pretty strange that a pattern can be interpreted in such diverse ways (supervising controller, passive view, etc) Maybe these variant should be called true patterns on itself without all being labeled as MVP??

Before anybody starts, I know that the MVC framework from microsoft could be a good solution, but alas, this project had too many strong ties to the page model with all the current user controls that it will be too risky to redo all those in the MVC framework. Maybe MVC v2 should have an easy way to use old style user controls? No, after thinking about it for another 4 seconds that would not be such a great idea

Found objects from the Gower coastline. The tiny Teddy Bear with his red hat was washed up on Rhossili beach – see the picture below for how he looked when I found him. He now lives comfortably dry in the bowl shaped remains of a metal fishing float that I picked up on Whiteford Sands – “La Coquille” is embossed on the outer surface. The corrosion gives a rough weathered textural surface to the float; and inside there is a series of radiating ribs that make an interesting pattern. I used the piece of bright blue and yellow discarded fishing rope to carry the float home.

I’ve knit myself a couple of berets recently. They took about a day each, and I love, love, love them. You may remember that I had a hat disaster which ended with me deciding to knit a lace beret? Here they are:

I call the pattern “Sorbonne”, because my husband told me I look like a student of French literature at the Sorbonne when I put it on.

I used a little over one 50 gram ball of Rauma Vamsegarn for each of them, and I’ve threaded some hat elastic through the ribbing on both to get that snug fit around the forehead.

If you want, you can knit Sorbonne, too. This pattern is provided completely free, but with the clear proviso that I’m not a professional designer, and I have not test knit this pattern beyond the two hats I’ve knit for myself.

They’re pretty fun both to knit and to wear, though. Especially if you pretend to be a student of French literature at the Sorbonne.

SO obviously its Turkey Day and I am sitting here being completely lazy and cruising funny sites just for the complete mindless retardation of it all. We are supposed to be heading over to Mama’s soon, but the lure of my PJ’s is strong young Jedi. I have recently had tech issues on the printer front and needed to reinstall my drivers. Yeah I so am just not capable of tech we should know this about me right off the bat. My other personality Betty is but I do not let her out too much as shes rather a bore. Nerd Pron fuck that. I rather be the Vintage Vixen darling Lu that I am. Yup.

So The Russian offered some points of interests : look here and here he said.. check check and low behold there it was my driver. Yup. Install Print. WOOT ! Now I can print go sit somewhere today and knit endless hours away. YAY ME !

While looking at hat patterns I found this and fell out of my butthole:

OMFG!

The Selfish Seamstress loves a good sleeveless turtleneck. Is it just me or is a sleeveless turtleneck the ultimate sexy-but-elegant-and-still-casual garment? And especially a black sleeveless turtleneck. I’ve always got one in my wardrobe somewhere, and I don’t think I’ve been without one since college. I love the Burda 10.2005 cowl sweater I made recently, but I I decided I wanted one with more cowling around the neck and less spread around the shoulders, so I whipped up this quick one:

The ServiceResult class is a very simple class that I found useful in certain cases where I need to

The ServiceResult class is a very simple class that I found useful in certain cases where I need to make a call to a method that performs different actions or validations.

I have used it in webservices when a collection of items to operate are passed to a webmethod, and a result has to be returned summarizing the errors and warnings. And I have used it as well in Service calls where complex operations are made.

It can also serve as a base class for a “workflow pipeline” framework such as the approach used in the ORM nettiers (see this for further information).

The code:

public class ServiceResult
{
#region private members
private List<string> _errors = new List<string>();
private List<string> _warnings = new List<string>();
private string _errorsHeader = "The following errors were encountered:";
#endregion

#region properties
/// <summary>
/// This string will appear in the header of the errors list.
/// </summary>
public string ErrorsHeader {
get { return _errorsHeader; }
set { _errorsHeader = value; }
}
public string[] Errors { get { return _errors.ToArray(); } }
public string[] Warnings { get { return _warnings.ToArray(); } }
public bool HasErros { get { return (_errors.Count > 0); } }
public bool HasWarnings { get { return (_warnings.Count > 0); } }
#endregion

#region methods
public void AddError(string error)
{
  _errors.Add(error);
}
public void AddWarning(string warning)
{
  _warnings.Add(warning);
}
public string GetFormattedErrors(bool includeHeader)
{
  StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
  if (includeHeader)
   sb.AppendLine(ErrorsHeader);
  foreach (string error in Errors)
  {
   sb.AppendLine(error);
  }
  return sb.ToString();
}
/// <summary>
/// Takes the errors and warnings from another ServiceResults.
/// Use this method to compose multiple ServiceResults into one.
/// </summary>
/// <param name="serviceResult"></param>
public void Compose(ServiceResult serviceResult)
{
  foreach (string error in serviceResult.Errors)
   AddError(error);
  foreach (string warning in serviceResult.Warnings)
   AddWarning(warning);
}
#endregion
}

Then make a call to the method:

ServiceResult fooResult = Foo();

Or make several calls and combine the results:

ServiceResult theResult = new ServiceResult();

theResult.Combine(FooA());

theResult.Combine(FooB());

//Use the result.

if (theResult.HasErrors)

Console.Write(theResult.GetFormattedErrors(true));

Sometimes you can’t just code it and get it right first time. Sometimes you actually need to t

Sometimes you can’t just code it and get it right first time. Sometimes you actually need to think about things before you start cranking out the code. Nevermind that mostly you don’t have a hope of figuring things out until after you start coding, a little thinking won’t hurt, right? How can it hurt to try and understand things?

One thing that I’ve only recently discovered is that people who are trying to draw a flowchart of a process or are trying to come up with a look for a report or web page do a weird thing: they start thinking that their sketch is a real working design. They start to think that they have “solved” it and they have “the” design. I’ll tell you what is bad about that: at that stage you understand about 12% of the problem or maybe 7% of what the system is supposed to do. If you have managed to understand the whole problem in your mind and solved it right you have either: got a simple problem, so get coding; or, you’ve mistaken the problem and won’t find the issues until you do start coding.

One thing that I’ve found really helps is to make people work on paper. The paper sketch emphasizes that the models are all throwaway anyway and they will spend less time polishing the visuals and making sure that they are using the “right” flowchart shape and more time thinking about the ideas. The less time people work on a thing, the less they get attached to it and the less they think that it is “their baby” and needs to be defended against changes. The other thing is, you can’t make a paper sketch and kick it over the wall to “them” and expect “them” to implement it. The sketch nly makes sense as part of a conversation, and there is nothing better than a conversation for conveying intent, and fulfilling intentions is what design is all about.

Also, when you are working on paper, make sure that you are using a felt pen or other chunky marker. Don’t try to write with a mechanical 0.3mm pencil thinking that you’ll be better off being able to cram stuff on. Less is more, you don’t need to include the actual details of what types you are using or what shape the button will be, don’t get hung up on that! Using a big marker constrains what you can get on a page. can’t get enough on? Use bigger paper and keep sketching big!

You will struggle with the detail-oriented folks who think that details are more important and think the big picture is “obvious”. Possibly they think that everyone “gets it” already and there is nothing to think about. Or, there are those who are smart enough to handle more than one layer of detail; they might think they can handle all the levels of detail at the same time. How do we cope with these people? My only suggestion is do some drawing of your own, radically re-orient all their concepts; keep their details but invert and intussuscept all the big things. Twist and turn and show them their own ideas upside and see if they can pick problems. Not just layout; but change the timing, the chronological order, any hierarchy you can find, any chicken-and-egg, invert everything and shake it up. If you can’t find any problems then keep those details, it might work! If it all looks different once you’ve started thinking laterally you might convert them to thinking BIG first.

It seems a damn shame that we still haven’t got anything as fast as working on paper. I’ve used Google Notebook for working on brain dumping web searches and throwing ideas down using and a lot of success in work capturing unstructured and semi-structured requirements and use-cases using the excellent Microsoft OneNote, but it is still nowhere near as fast as using a piece of paper to sketch and draw. I’m hoping that I can try using a graphics tablet or tablet PC and OneNote. I have a feeling that the ability to draw and the use of OneNote’s OCR stuff (did you know windows 7 has OCR on TIFF images for free? So you can index images by search if there is text in the picture).

Then there are the UI sketch tools like Balsamiq, which I like very much but still aren’t as fast as paper. And, of course, when I draw a picture I want it to be a picture of the database design and the conceptual links and which system module that thing lives in and a picture of the UI on one page.

Of course I’m not the only person touting this; it really echoed stuff I read on Nielsen about paper prototyping and how fast it is to do a cycle with users compared to how long a real UAT takes. The other favourite of mine is the 37 signals blog on using a sharpie to sketch a UI.

An afternoon with no rain, Flickr playing well with others, and some mail that piled up makes for a yarn-crawlish post. Grab a cuppa’ (it’s chilly here), your favorite snack, and settle in!

We’ll start with the long-neglected last Loopy Sock Club package that arrived a couple of weeks ago. This is the last of this season’s sock club, but it’s also my last after two years in the club. To the best of my recollection, I’ve not knitted with the first yarn from ANY of the packages, so there’s little point in putting my name in for the lottery for next year. I’ve gifted some of the yarn, sold one offering, and I really do like some of it, but…

The yarn is a rich color that reminds me of the fur-girls. It’s Numa Numa’s The Usual in Red Bartlett Pear. I’m thinking that eventually I will knit these socks with this yarn, but once it swims into my stash, who knows?!

Then there’s my first Creatively Dyed Sock Club kit! This is a sneak peek at a new technique Dianne is doing. I’m quite certain this “Wild Thing” yarn will get knitted up in that pattern, right after 2010 becomes the current year. I’m leaving the pattern tamers right there with the yarn and the pattern too, so there will be no excuses!

Now, I know spinners like a WIP (wraps per inch) tool, but do other knitters really use them? I definitely didn’t, not before I started spinning. I mean… There’s swatching and there’s a label around the yarn, right?! Karat Stix made these little cuties. Obviously, they were part of my Loopy kit.

Still with me? Moving right along… Next up, we have some beautiful Gypsyknits BFL roving in Gem-Spin that grew up to be yarn.

I wanted to make the most of this beautiful yarn, but in the end, I decided to navajo ply it because I didn’t have enough of any solid that would work with it.

I love how muted the colors are. It reminds me of the beach, where the sky and earth and ocean seem to just slip together at some point out on the horizon…

A little larger than life, and those aren’t wrapped, but draped across the WIP tool, so it’s really about sport weight. I’m pretty pleased with myself… Three-ply, sport weight, with about 214 yards. I’m thinking I’m going to do Anita’s Mermaid scarf.

Ready for Thanksgiving, if you live in the States? We are! We’re going to have a not so traditional pot roast tomorrow, because that’s what the Knight wanted, and he’s cooking, so what’s not to love? I’ll add a couple of pies – because the extras can always go to the firehouse – and we’ll have a quiet day at home.

Happy Thanksgiving to those celebrating!

Douglas Hofstadter’s ” Godel Escher Bach” is the best book about recursion out there. However, it is important to note that Recursion occurs in all kinds of places in life generally. I suppose it’s a question of which particular discipline that deals with recursion you’re looking for. For general philosophical and intellectual stimulation, then “Godel, Escher Bach” is the one to read. You’ll find it on Amazon.

Books are written in language, and language is itself of a recursive nature. NLP, or Neuro Linguistic Programming, is also about recursion. There are many books opn NLP and it probably doesn’t matter which you read. Quite often the authors of these books give clues to their interest in recursion without direct emphasis. People who understand how to spot the recursion will pick them up without being told.

There best place to learn about recursion is the planet you live on. Take a look around you, you’ll spot it everywhere. The question is, of course, whether or not it is actually real – is it just in the mind?

So when you look at your life what do you see or feel is missing or is there something you want to c

So when you look at your life what do you see or feel is missing or is there something you want to change about your life. Maybe you’re stuck in old energy or thoughts or think that if you leave a relationship you won’t be able to make it on your own.

Could be that you just have a feeling that something is wrong and that possibly you’ve been looking in the wrong area of your life to try to fix something and it has nothing to do with what you thought it was at all.

A lot of times we get stuck in our lives and we’re not sure where we should start to look. Some of us look at our mates and say. “It’s their fault I feel terrible.” When it is really something about us that is the real culprit to life seeming hard or relationships a real pain to be in.

When we look inside to try to understand and ‘fix’ our lives there is so much that has gone on in our lives that we can’t sift through all the history. This history is comprised of emotions, judgements, punishment and dis-ease and way to much to truly understand what it is all about.

To be able to wade our way through all of this history requires a lot of work. Some of us journal our way to understanding ourselves and moving on beyond the life we’ve lived so far. Others go to counselors to work through our baggage. Suggestions and tools become our way of fixing our selves.

Another way is to actually look at the energy system that surrounds the energy body and find the energetic pictures, emotions and experiences that make up who we are. We are a product of every thing that we see, feel, hear, touch, and smell. We create our belief systems on other’s beliefs. Making it hard to really understand who we are and what exactly we are experiencing.

After many years we begin to shut down. We decide that what we have right now is enough. And the years slide by in the same patterns, and depression and disbelief.

When we decide that we don’t have to live in old belief patterns and emotions we can really shift our life. Instead of being the product of our past we can be the creator of our future by actively looking for change.

Get a reading and healing on the blocks in your energy system and live the life you came to live this lifetime.
