We’re still having fun FUN-raising! Get used to it. We’re doing it until the 15th. Tonight, though we don’t have anyone in the studio with us,

Amalia Goros and I will be featuring the music of Tereza. The big song from this disk is “Fly me to the Moon”. Written by Bart Howard in 1954 the song was first recorded by Kaye Ballard then covered by many other great artists including Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, Julie London, Patti Page, Doris Day. In 1969 (forgive me–a pun this good just can’t be ignored) it reached dizzying heights when astronaut Buzz Aldrin of Apollo 11 played the Frank Sinatra version as he walked on the moon. On July 20th of this year the 40th anniversary of the moon walk was celebrated at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and to commemorate this historic event Diana Krall serenaded the three Apollo 11 astronauts with her version of the song.

In May 2003 Tereza released her version of this classic on the aptly titled Double cd: Fly Me To The Moon. It was catapulted into the public arena when Cutty Sark picked it for their TV ad campaign that year.

The disk we’re offering at the $100.00 pledge level has this and many other great songs by Tereza in both Greek and English. Though she grew up in New York her roots are Greek.

Click here to check out her video for “Akouse Me”.

So, while they last, call (718.204.8900) and pledge $100.00. Not only will you get this great disk you will also be supporting HPR (Hellenic Public Radio).

BioShock would be a mere shadow of the game it is now if it weren’t for the outstanding soundt

BioShock would be a mere shadow of the game it is now if it weren’t for the outstanding soundtrack. Most of the songs listed here link to YouTube. However, since songs on YouTube are often removed because of copyright issues (can’t they understand that YouTube is basically free advertising, and that it opens up a whole new demographic for these old tunes?), I make it a habit to link to Deezer whenever I can.

Anyway, in case you’re one of these copyright enforcers for these long-since deceased artists, here is a little newsflash how popular media works in the 21st century: I only link to the songs, I don’t provide them – so you’re barking up the wrong tree by sending Cease and Desist notices.

My schedule lately seems to revolve around two things that will never be “done”. Singing and buildin

My schedule lately seems to revolve around two things that will never be “done”. Singing and building my website.

Here is my schedule:

Sing a little. Site build a little.
Sing a little.Site build a little.
Sing a little. Site build a little.
Eat (optional) & Repeat.

Apparently with any art form I take on, I’m never satisfied that something is “finished.” Even if it would appear that something is “almost finished”, I always need to try a new variation. It never ends.

I think the biggest nightmare for a musician would be to have an inane hit song, and then have to sing it the same way, every night, for 20,000 times in a row.

I heard Patti Page was in town recently. Her hit was “How much is that Doggie in the Window.” I think that was in the 50s. She must be, what, in her 70s? 80s? How many times do you think she’s had to sing that song.

The only song I have that could even be considered a mini-hit for me is “Buy the Bitch a Cadillac”. (also a dog song!) It’s mandatory in all of my shows. I don’t mind. I like the song and I’m younger and not as famous as Patti Page, so that’s probably about 19,990 times less I’ve had to perform it. But doesn’t anyone want to hear any of my new stuff!!!

I could probably stop learning anything new right now and just go around the country singing “Buy the Bitch a Cadillac” and everyone would be happy and I could just spend the rest of my time working on my website. But noooooo……

I understand websites are the same way – never done. I was working on mine till late last night and got up early this morning for an early appointment. I barely had enough time to get myself out the door, but FIRST, I had to try some new colors I woke up thinking about.

If you have a chance, check out my site and let me know what you think. It got a whole new facelift today.

Stings. Piss me off. They are manufactured criminality. You put a piece of chocolate in front of me, and say– here take it–baby, I am gonna reach. And this is me, basically a law-abiding sort. (although there is that weakness for dipping into the lost-and-found–shh!)

That said. I wish they would not have appropriated the name of a fine song to cutsify that investigation into corrupt state officials a while back. That adds some irksome colorings to the memory.

Turning it back around in my mind, I went searching out a few versions.

The very basic: Patti Page

Young and strong: Sam Cooke

Bonnie Raitt and Norah Jones

What do Sarah Vaughn, The Platters, Brook Benton, Patti Page, The Diamonds, Del Vikings, James Brown

What do Sarah Vaughn, The Platters, Brook Benton, Patti Page,
The Diamonds, Del Vikings, James Brown, Dinah Washington,
Roger Miller, Jerry Lee Lewis, Frankie Laine, The Troggs,
Wayne Fontana, the Mindbenders, the Troggs, Leslie Gore, Blue
Cheer, Manfred Mann, Steam, Freddie and the Dreamers, Dusty
Springfield, Keith, Paul Mauriat, Jay and the Techniques,
David Bowie, The Blues Magoos, Spanky and Our Gang, Crispian
St. Peters, Jerry Butler, Bobby Hebb, Louie Armstrong. and
Rod Stewart all have in common?

They all recorded for Irving Green, who owned Mercury Records,
a little indie who could… and did… become a major label!
He also owned Smash and distributed Phillips records and all
of their subsidiaries. He was one of the first champions of
Rock and Roll and Mercury was the first major company to
promote Black artists to crossover into the Pop mainstream.
It also was the first to have an African-American as Vice-
President of A+R, Quincy Jones.

Although he repeatedly asked me to call him Irv, I always
called him Mr. Green, out of respect for his daughter Kelli
Ross, who was my partner in Allouette Productions. Not many
people knew that Mr. Green was a silent partner in our
publishing and administration firm.

He was one of the few CEOS I’ve ever known who an artist
could talk to. Although he wasn’t a producer, I remember
when James Brown recorded briefly for Smash, he wouldn’t go
into the recording studio without Mr. Green being there.

From time to time he’d ask me to go “undercover” for him. In
the last days of Cameo-Parkway records, he asked me to
introduce him to my friends Neil Bogart, who was running the
label and Bob Reno, who was with the publishing company. He
wanted to get them to come over to Mercury, but Neil and Bob
wound up going to Buddah Records instead. A few years later,
Bob Reno did have a successful stint at Mercury, as head of
MRC publishing and later as head of A+R.

When the Lovin’Spoonful were about to re-sign with Kama-Sutra,
Mr.Green sent me to Wilkes-Barre to meet up with my old pals
and offer them a check for a million dollars to defect to
Mercury! When I mentioned to him that he hadn’t signed it, he
said, “When they sign a contract…I’ll sign the check!”

The last time I saw him it was 35 years ago hanging out at
Quincy’s house. He said he would leave the music buisness
when it stopped being fun. I guess it stopped being fun when
a big conglomorate bought him out. A few years later he went
into semi-retirement and moved to Palm Springs.

Although I’d heard he had become a top land developer, I will
always remember him as one of the greatest developers of pop
music and the human potential. Thank you for believing in me
and helping me to believe in myself.

Rest-in-Peace, Mr.Green.

Respectfully, Artie Wayne
