Nejspíš znáte Faith No More, s kterýma se proslavil a nejvíc vplul do dá se říct “mainstreamu”.

No, možná je snadnější ctrlc ctrlv:

“Mike Patton could very well be one of the most versatile and talented singers in rock music. He may be rock’s most valuable player as well, since he has divided his time between at least five projects: Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk and an experimental solo career.”

Do každýho songu si pozval nějakej známej subjekt (Massive Attack, Amon Tobin, Kid Loco, Nora Jones…)

I’d like to hear what the U.S. Generals, Eisenhower, Patton, and Schwarzkopf have to say about Obama’s fear of making a military decision. It is clear to me that if Obama was Commander-in-Chief during World War Two that Hitler would have us all goose stepping to his favorite marches.

Why does he make such a huge deal about selecting options from his advisors? Could it be that they gave him honest appraisals, and he was looking for the option that said, “GET OUT.” Obama does not have a clue about leading a war. He doesn’t have the knowledge, the will, or the guts to fight the biggest threat the world has ever known. There is a good chance that his final policy decision will be “to not win.” The final result will be another Viet Nam, and we will have sacrificed our finest young people to liberal politics.

Patton film senaryosu

Senaryo metni (İngilizce Orijinali Reverse Spins Editor)

SAHNE:

General George S. Patton (George C. Scott): Dur. Buradan sağa dön.

Şoför: Ama savaş alanı, diğer tarafta efendim.

Patton: Lütfen Benimle tartışma, Çavuş. Savaş alanının kokusunu alırım.

General Omar Bradley (Karl Malden): O buraya dün de geldi, George.

Patton: (elindeki sopayla işaret eder) O tarafta. Hemen sağa dön, dediğimi yap.

SAHNE:

Jip yoldan ayrılır, turban giyimli eşeğe binmiş bazı Kuzey Afrikalının yanından geçerek Romalılardan kalma birkaç harabe yakınına gelir. Patton iner, Bradley de onu izler. Fonda sanki uzun yıllar öncesine ait unutulmuş bir savaşın o çağlara ait kolay unutulmayan müziğini çalan boru yankılanmaları aksetmektedir.

KONUŞMALAR:

Patton: Buradaydı. Çarpışma buradaydı. Kartacalılar şehri savunurken… …üç Roma lejyonu saldırıya geçti. Kartacalılar gururlu ve cesurdu. Ama dayanamadılar. Arap kadınları……onların giysilerini, kılıçlarını ve kalkanlarını aldı. Askerler güneşte çıplak yattı…… 2.000 yıl önce. Ben buradaydım.

SAHNE:

He mutado.

Entonces me alejo.

I call myself a pacifist. I’m pretty sure that there isn’t a time when killing swaths of your fellow humans could be justified. I can’t think of a war that 1) couldn’t have been avoided if the right people were in charge, 2) didn’t go terribly wrong in terms of casualties, civilian and military and 3) bring out the worst in human behaviour. But I have a dark, dirty secret (that isn’t so secret to those who know me well)…I LOVE war movies. I don’t just mean the anti-war classics like All Quiet On the Western Front and Paths Of Glory. I mean good old-fashioned jingoistic flag-wavers with John Wayne and Van Johnson. I mean modern classics like Saving Private Ryan and Platoon. I know this seems like a disparity and I suppose it is, in a way. But in war movies, I often see men (and women) rising to humanitarian heights, overcoming physical limitations and demonstrating partisanship and cooperation, bringing out the man’s best in the worst of circumstances. This week is Remembrance Day here in Canada and in Britain and Veteran’s Day in the United States and at this time, I always feel led to watch a few of my favourites as well finding one or two I may have overlooked. As I grow older however, I become more aware of my mortality and more appreciative of the sacrifices made by others who chose to go into harm’s way for the ideal of freedom and this year in particular, I have been thinking of people I have known who were connected to war in some way and of course, the movies their situation brings to mind.

Although my dad was a couple of months shy of active service in World War 2 (he joined up on his 18th birthday but all he saw was basic training outside Toronto and weekend furloughs in Toronto), I have several uncles who saw a great deal of action. My uncle Mike was shot down behind German lines early in the war and sat through the war in a POW camp. As a child, when he and my aunt Kaye would come over for a swim and he would take off his shirt, I would marvel at the foot long scar rippling across his left shoulder from stray bullets during his capture. The Canadian military was ultimately very generous, providing him with a pension and a cushy job chauffeuring military types around Southern Ontario until his retirement but that would be a small price for the indignities he must have suffered and horrific sights he must have been privy to in those years in the German camp, as in the quintessential POW movie, The Great Escape. Although this rollicking and exciting adventure strays sometimes from the source material, the book by Paul Brickhill that outlines his own experiences as a prisoner at the infamous Stalag Luft II, the truly amazing thing is that the most unbelievable parts in the film are those that actually happened with Steve McQueen’s unpredictable behaviour and demands accounting for the bulk of the changes from the book. Another great movie (and book) from this same event is the British classic, The Wooden Horse, the true-life story of how an escape tunnel was dug essentially using only a wooden gymnastic horse and the ingenuity of dozens of prisoners.

My uncle Harry was one of the 76,000 Canadian troops that participated in the invasion of Sicily and ultimately Italy and spent many long months working his way north to free Italy from the fascist grip of Mussolini. On a recent trip to Italy, we were in Salerno, where the disembarkation of the Allied invasion of Italy took place and and as I walked on the boardwalk next to the Mediterranean, I couldn’t help but think of the thousands of young men who lost their lives where I was walking. The invasion of Sicily brings to mind the Oscar-winning film about the man who led the great invasion, Patton. General George Patton was an imposing, brash, egotistical man but a brilliant tactician and the ideal fodder for a movie biography. Francis Coppola and former military man Edmund North wrote a terrific script that perfectly captured the enigma that was Patton. George C. Scott would not give a better performance, even if he felt it necessary to turn down the Oscar that came with it and the movie would famously become Richard Nixon’s favourite.

Many years ago, I watched what was essentially another rip-off of The Dirty Dozen, The Devil’s Brigade. An entertaining romp, this one held a place of importance and pride to me though because it concerned a ragtag U.S. commando unit drummed into shape by Canadian Special Forces officers, led by Cliff Robertson. For once, the Canadians were the real heroes. It was many years later that my dad informed that not only was the Devil’s Brigade a real World War 2 unit, but the best man at my parent’s wedding, George Stocking, was a former member of the Devil’s Brigade. I promptly rushed home and watched it again and got a copy for my dad, who had never seen the movie.

My favourite war sub-genre is the submarine movie. The idea that a small group of men from every background works together for the greater good (and their own safety) inside a giant tube, constantly facing stress and danger is a formula that never gets old for me. Purists will list Das Boot and Run Silent Run Deep as the classics of the genre but my favourite is a propaganda piece that may lack in realism, but more than makes up for it in heart, Destination Tokyo. Released at the start of the Second World War to give audiences a glimpse into the heretofore unknown world of the silent service, it stars Cary Grant as the skipper of a sub that has the unenviable task of sneaking into Tokyo Bay on an espionage mission, providing us with humour, pathos, excitement, and sheer bravado in spades. Yeah, it’s old-fashioned but it’s old-fashioned fun.

Many may feel, even with the advent of ultra-realistic movies like Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line, that war movies diminish the great sacrifices the men and women who have served have made but I know that during virtually every war movie I watch, I have at least a moment of reflection when I’m thankful uncles Mike and Harry and all the other uncles, fathers, brothers, sisters, wives and aunts were willing to make the decision to serve their country so that pacifists like myself can enjoy the freedom they fought for.

“Man was born to love-
Like Icarus, to fly too high-
And far too lonely than he ought
To kiss the sun of east and west
And hold the world at his behest-
To hold the terrible power
To whom only gods are blessed-
But me, I am just a man”

For all those movie buffs out there, you’ll be happy to know that I’m a huge movie addict. In another life, I would totally come back as a movie critic, member of the voting board for the Oscars or anything else that would require I watch movies pretty much for a living, because it’s definitely one of my favorite past times. That being said, I have been a member of Netflix for many years and am able to feed my movie cravings every night—as long I remembered to send in the movies I already watched…–or any night I have the time. I watch everything from silent classics to romantic comedies, foreign films to Oscar nom’s…and everything in between. I’m an avid user of the “What You May Like” feature on Netflix and I’m one of those nerdy people who actually rates the movies I’ve already seen, so lately I’ve been getting a diverse set of 3 red envelopes in the mail, which brings me to what I’m getting at…

The other day, I received “Patton” in the mail, which won 7 Academy Awards and features the incomparable George C. Scott as General Patton. It’s considered the 228th best movie of all time on IMDB, so aside from the fact that I had to watch it in installments due to its 170 minute runtime, it was a pretty good war movie, which is saying a lot coming from me because war isn’t usually my cup of tea…What I thought was most fascinating about this movie was the history of this great general and the examination of Patton’s character.

Patton was an extremely interesting man believing in reincarnation and was a general completely obsessed with classic war strategy, focused on recreating battle scenarios of the Romans where they were successful. He participated in the first Olympic pentathlon—fencing, riding, swimming, running & shooting. He was also a poet and while not religious, was deeply curious about God and the Bible. Intellectually curious and non-political, he was a portrait of the classic war general very different from today’s—a respected leader, a feared fighter and a deeply complex man. Patton was responsible for winning a number of US battles against the Germans in WWII and some say he was even responsible for helping bring the war to an end. He was such an offensive strategist, I’d even venture to say that had he not died shortly after the war, he and his troops may have influenced a different outcome in Vietnam. In short, if you don’t see this movie, definitely read up on this interesting man, a great American 4-Star General of the United States Army.

How does this relate to The Shells?? Well, I’ll tell ya!

Patton was a “Guts & Glory” kind of man—always on the offensive & never-surrendering. One of my favorite quotes of his from the film was, “Now, an army is a team – it lives, eats, sleeps, fights as a team. This individuality stuff is a bunch of crap.” This guy was a great general, but he knew that his talent would only take him so far. We’re only as strong as our weakest link and will be judged not just as individuals, but by the sum of our parts.

That got me thinking a lot about The Shells…I know I’ve been talking a lot recently about the value of perseverance through challenges and sticking to it when things look hopeless. I think one of the things that differentiates The Shells from other indie bands we see in our network is that we really try to work as a team. Each of us has our own strengths and shortcomings, but we’re there to help each other out when something goes wrong. We know our limitations and aren’t afraid to ask for help where we need it. Being able to lean on each other when we need help, both as a band and in our personal lives, has brought us closer together as a team. Recognizing the strengths our musicians bring to making the sum of our parts into a better product has been challenging because it requires a lot of trust and letting go of control. But, sometimes we have to realize that Rome wasn’t built in a day and it took a whole army full of all kinds of people to do it. I always compare living in NYC to being in war because even the simplest task of going to the market can feel like you’re entering a battlefield. In the same way, being in this band has been a constant uphill battle. It can get you down, but it’s always easier when you remember that you’re not in it alone. We’re doing this as a team. Maybe we can all take a lesson from Gen. George and start thinking about the future of The Shells in the same “guts & glory” kind of way. When you’re creating your own destiny, it doesn’t pay to stand on the sidelines and wait for a miracle. You have to constantly be pushing forward and looking for the next window of opportunity to strike while the iron’s hot. Patton didn’t become a legend by the number of battles he won, though he was clearly a hugely successful soldier…he’s a legend because of the way he made his decisions…the style & pinache with which he conquered his enemies and forged ahead through the worst conditions. If The Shells can remember not to let the small stuff get us down, that some battles were meant to be lost, and that there is still victory ahead if we can keep plowing through the storm—then we’re already successful. If we can do it with grace, honor, confidence and heart, even better. If we can be inspired by our failures to write new songs and create something good out of pain, isn’t that the reason we’re musicians to being with? If we can each be the sort of individual who wants to bring their best to the team, then there’s no way we can fail.

People often ask us what message we’d like to send to the other indie artists out there who are struggling every day like we are. This is the blog I’d have them read…Patton’s a movie I’d recommend seeing…and really trying to practice what you preach (or, “be the things you say..”  from our song “Change…”) in the face of struggle and victory is what this message is really about. I’ll leave you with a little prayer Patton had his chaplain write up in the film during a particularly harsh time in the battle against the Germans…The weather being our challenges—we the soldiers, the battle-our daily lives, and the oppression/wickedness of our enemies being our own minds & negativity getting in the way of our true potential for success.

“Almighty and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee of Thy great goodness to restrain this immoderate weather with which we have had to contend. Grant us fair weather for battle. Graciously harken to us as solders who call upon Thee that, armed with Thy power, we may advance from victory to victory, and crush the oppression and wickedness of our enemies, and establish Thy justice among men and nations. AMEN.”

Good luck on the road to your dreams! It’s all guts & glory from here—Surround yourself with a good team, stay positive and always on the attack to conquering your own future with perseverance, dignity and grace. The wisdom and the lessons you’ll learn along the way are all a part of the success.

Until next time—Peace, Love & Harmony with The Shells!!

<3 Jessi

Tentative list of things I think kick ass: Killin’ Nazi Bastards, George C. Scott, tanks, bull terriers, good old fashioned plain talking men, hating Communism. Yep, let’s just get this right out of the way here. Patton kicks large sized portions of my ass. This movie was great.

To clarify, I’m the type of fellow that’s not particularly into biopic pieces. I’m a fiction man. More specifically, I’m a science fiction man. But nothing could matter less here. From Jump Street, Patton grabs you and really never lets go. I know that the opening scene has become an iconic part of our culture, so this isn’t saying much. However, I’ve found that a lot of the revered parts of our culture tend to be overrated anyway. With Patton, this is not the case.

This is one of those difficult films where the goal is to make the audience connect with and even love a character that has some tough traits to fall in love with. Luckily, Franklin Schaffner knew what he was doing. This movie wasn’t about the War. It was about a great man trying to conform in order to preserve his dream. Granted, Patton’s dream was to make himself famous for killing a shitload of dudes. But, nonetheless, the man had vision, and it is impossible to resist respecting him for it, and it’s obvious that Schaffner does.

I may be biased, because I have a massive hard on for Scott, and have since Dr. Strangelove, but this performance is masterful. He captures the true essence of Patton, which is no easy task. The man was revered, hated, mocked, feared, and respected, depending who you talked to and when it was that you talked to them. This is a character with so many different sides to his personality, it would take a master to do him justice on screen, which is exactly what happened.

A great portion of the movie is spent illustrating the differences between Patton and General Omar Bradley, masterfully played by Karl Madden. Bradley was shown to be a reserved and humble man, typically characteristics of someone deserving respect. It’s no different here, however, the restraint that he shows also shows us the mistakes of living a life with no driving passion. Patton’s all or nothing attitude is what ended in success, not the restraint shown by “Monty” and “Brad” on D Day.

In the end, it’s evident that all of the problems that Patton ever had were brought on himself. However, they always came on him because of the same personal characteristics that brought him success in the first place.

But, possibly the best aspect of this film is the sweeping from genre to genre in each new scene. I can’t see how any single movie fan could not love this film. You like interpersonal dramas, and hate war movies? Fine, just be patient through the tank battles, and you’ll shortly be watching a power struggle between two opposing personalities. You want to watch a rise and fall success/failure story? Just hang tight, it’s in there. You love to see shit get blowed up? Done.

Overall, this film can make you think, can make you feel patriotic, can make you tune out and watch shit explode, can take you down a path in history, and all the while was shot beautifully. As opposed to the last war movie I reviewed, Glory, this is a movie well deserving to be on the list of top films ever.

What Patton would have said… This is how General George S. Patton would sum things up …. and then catch holy hell from Ike. He sure had a unique way of expressing his thoughts. ATTENTION!

To ALL those whining, panty-waisted, pathetic Citizens, it’s time for a little refresher course on exactly why we Americans occasionally have to fight wars to keep this nation great.

See if you can tear yourself away from your “reality” TV and Starbucks for a minute, pull your head out of your ass — and LISTEN UP!!
Abu Ghraib is not “torture” or an “atrocity.” This is the kind of thing frat boys, sorority girls, and academy cadets do every year. A little fun at someone else’s expense. Certainly no reason to wring your hands or get your panties in a wad. Got that ?

WHICH PART DON’T YOU GET?

Islam a peaceful religion? My Ass! Millions of these warped misled sons-of-bitches are plotting, as we speak, to destroy our country and our way of life any way they can. Some of them are here among us now. They don’t want to convert you and don’t want to rule you. They believe you are a vile infestation of Allah’s paradise. They don’t give a shit how “progressive” you are, how peace-loving you are, or how much you sympathize with their cause. They want your ass dead, and they think it is God’s will for them to do it.

Some think if we give them a hug or listen to them, then they’ll like us, and if you agree – Then you are a pathetic dumb ass!
If they manage to get their hands on a nuke, chemical agents, or even some anthrax — you will wish to God we had hunted them down and killed THEM while we had the chance. How many more Americans must be beheaded? You’ve fallen asleep AGAIN – get your head out of your ass! You may never get another chance! NOW GET OFF YOUR SORRY ASS and pass this on to any and every person you give a damn about – if you ever gave a damn about anything!

DISMISSED!

The truth shall set you free!
