Mr Allen, 56, founded Microsoft in 1975 with Bill Gates but left in 1983, when he was diagnosed with another form of cancer – Hodgkin’s disease.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Microsoft Corp co-founder Paul Allen has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and has begun treatment, a spokesman for his investment company said on Monday.

Employees of Vulcan Inc, which Allen formed in 1986 to manage his business dealings and philanthropic activity, were informed of Allen’s illness in a company e-mail on Monday.

“He’s feeling pretty good, he’s remaining very active at Vulcan and his other holdings and interests and he has no plans to cut back on any of that,” said Vulcan spokesman David Postman.

Postman said Allen’s diagnosis was recent and that treatment has already begun.

Allen, the 32nd richest person in the world according to Forbes magazine, co-founded Microsoft in 1975 with Bill Gates and resigned as an executive in 1983. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease in 1983 but his cancer was successfully treated.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system, which is the body’s disease-fighting network. It is a far more common disease than the related but distinct Hodgkin’s.

The subject of money is a complex one.  Don’t you agree that there is nothing quite like the subject of money, that evokes strong feelings and reactions in people? Except perhaps, sex and religion?  That is because, as Abraham-Hicks says;

“…it touches most of you in one way or another, hundreds or even thousands of times in every day, it is a large factor in your vibrational make up and in your personal point of attraction… Because such a high percentage of your thoughts in any given day reside around the topic of money and financial success, as soon as you are able to deliberately guide your thoughts, not only it is certain that your financial success must improve, but the evidence of that success will then prepare you for deliberate improvement in every aspect of your life experience…”

It may be hard for someone who struggles to pay the bills every month, to sympathize with someone at the opposite end of the spectrum who has his own painful issues with money.

But it is true; money is an emotional button, a contentious issue. But I am not here to debate the pros and cons of dosh. I just want to tell a different story about money, because the one that I have been telling hasn’t worked for me.

“…abundance cannot find us unless we offer a vibration of abundance… even in the absence of something we want, we must find a way of feeling the essence of it, or it cannot come… when you ask for the manifestation prior to the vibration, you ask the impossible. When you are willing to offer the vibration before the manifestation, all things are possible…”

I have found a great tool to help me feel comfortable about money. It is a book called The Official Filthy Rich Handbook by Christopher Tennant.

Before doing the filthy rich handbook therapy, I used to raise my eyebrows at the filthy rich excesses.

“One could end world hunger with what they spend on a birthday party,” I used to say.

Not anymore! Two weeks of sitting on the toilet first thing in the morning with a latte macchiato in one hand, and the filthy rich handbook in the other, has worked like a charm. I’ve had a change of heart. I’ve come to see that the many ways these people can come up with, to spend their money, is brilliant. No, I really mean it. You want to try sitting there every day, as I do, with a checkbook in your hands panicking that you can’t think of a single thing to buy. Seriously! You see, in Ask and It Is Given, Abraham suggests the following exercise to help us pinpoint our energy: write yourself a check every day and spend it on the same day. Starting with $1,000 on the first day, $2,000 on the second and so on. It is also suggested that one should be as descriptive as possible on the memo. I have to tell you, I am stumped. When I finally figure out what to spend the money on, I sigh with relief. Then I worry about thinking of something to buy the following day.

Pathetic, pathetic, PATHETIC! Now do you see why I think the filthy rich are geniuses when it comes to spending money? Did you know that one of them bought a plot on the moon, for God’s sake!?

“How big is 525 feet,” I asked my son after reading that Roman Abramovich’s Yacht, Eclipse, is 525 feet long. “Is it as big as the QE2?”

“No, the QE2 is bigger,” he said.

“Well then, what’s all the fuss? It can’t be that big.”

“Yes but,” he explained. ” A 525 ft yacht is big enough to block out the sun, and The QE2 carried thousands of people.”

I see the point, and it increases my admiration for the-larger-than-life-sense of self these people have! Truth be told, they deserve some sort of public recognition.

Take Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich again, he paid $282 million for a house in London. Do you know something? I’m rethinking my position about being on a Real Estate sabbatical. In fact, if the likes of Abramovich, Rupert Murdoch, Bruce Kovner, Larry Ellison, Paul Allen and Bill Gates want to buy a house, I’ll be happy to make an exception for anyone of them, anytime. Just fly, sail, drive on over in one of your custom built cars, and I’ll postpone writing a chapter until after I sell you a house. I’ll even include you in one of the chapters. Oh, please don’t be upset if you didn’t see your name on the list. Anyone on Forbes 400 is welcome.

Feel better? Good.

Now, jokes apart (who’s joking? Not me), money is a great thing. And I want to say a big thank you to Patty Stonesifer and the Bill and Melinda Gate’s foundation for their generous grant to help save babies from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Also to Jeffrey Lewis, Chief of Staff to Teresa Heinz and President and Chief Operating Officer for the Heinz Family Philanthropies for his support of First Candle national Kicks Count! campaign. None would be possible without money.

And last but not least, thank you to my elder son who brought the Filthy Rich Handbook home, and left it lying around in the bathroom.

See you tomorrow

Memo to Paul Allen: If you’re one of the richest men on the planet and CHOOSE to own a professional sports franchise, stop screwing your star players around over a couple thousand dollars.

According to the website Blazersedge.com, fans at the Portland Trail Blazers annual “Fan Fest” loudly cheered starting forward LaMarcus Aldridge during player introductions. They even chanted “Sign him! Sign him! Sign him!” to the delight of Aldridge and the squirming of Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard.

Portland fans are renowned for being among the most knowledgeable in sports. They are also among the most loyal. That simple Fan Fest was attended by more than 16,000 people.

Paul Allen has seen his personal fortune dwindle over the past several years. Once the second richest man in the world, Allen is now only #32 on the Forbes list of billionaires. Don’t feel too bad. Allen still has $10.2 billion in personal wealth. In fairness, Allen has been burned by paying NBA players high salaries in the past. His annual payroll once exceeded $100 million for a cast of underachieving criminals once referred to as the “Jail Blazers.” However, this collection of young players is NOT those guys. Led by Brandon Roy, Aldridge and Greg Oden, the Blazers went 54-28 last season and won the NBA’s Northwest Division. Just as importantly, there were zero character issues on that team and Roy and the rest have been model citizens.

Still, once burned, twice shy and Allen took forever to get an extension for Roy done. Aldridge’s seemingly inevitable extension is taking even longer. Maybe this weekends fan reaction will speed up the signing.

[Note: This article was first posted as a comment to Lynn Zimmerman's "Twitter Could Drive You Cuckoo" (1 Oct. 2009).]

Studies like this, and the related reportage and unsupported speculation, are what could drive me cuckoo. More accurately, taking such reportage (and the related study behind it?) seriously is likely to be far less healthy for one’s brain and working memory than Twitter.

Look closely at what’s going on here. The cited articles make no mention of how Twitter was used in the study. So I spent (wasted?) 30 minutes or so looking for the actual study. Still haven’t found it. That’s your first clue: the assertion that Twitter is bad is mostly, perhaps entirely, an echo chamber.

A Google search did not yield the study; none of the articles I found have a link to it. I did find Dr. Alloway’s web site; that should have been promising — except that I couldn’t find a link to the study there either. I found a couple of references buried on her web site and through Google searches, but none which appear to be the related study either. Much more easy to find on her web site are links to all the media coverage she’s received and the talks she’s giving. That’s your second clue.

It appears from her web site that she’s doing some good research to establish the importance of working memory, among other areas. Bravo for that. She claims that it’s more valuable than IQ as a measure of intelligence (although the study I found measures the efficacy of working memory in terms of increased performance on IQ, literacy, and numeracy tests — hmmm). But even this appears to be a double-edged sword: she is also promoting “JUNGLE MEMORY, a brain-training program based on my research and promoted by Pearson Education, improved from a grade C to a B, and a B to an A after just 12 weeks! It is the only training program scientifically proven to raise grades.” So her web site is long on self-promotion and short on links to actual research.

______________________________

Clearly working memory as defined is an important skill. But why is it THE most important skill?

______________________________

But here’s the thing: What does all this have to do with Twitter being unhealthy for working memory? Where’s the evidence, the data? I found someone who suggested that the study did not actually test Twitter (can’t find that reference now). Dr. Alloway herself noted in a comment on her web site that the conclusions are “based on findings from a pilot study, more to follow once the study is complete.” Hmmm. Someone else on her web site asked four weeks ago for a link to the complete study; no response was posted. The reportage also suggests that Twitter was not actually tested, and that its detrimental effects are pure speculation on Dr. Alloway’s part. As reported in the Scotsman, “Paul Allen, editor of ComputerActive magazine, questioned the study and said technology like Twitter was ‘too new’ to make conclusions about. He said: “‘It sounds very spurious. I don’t see a correlation between the length of a message you send someone and the effect on memory. It could be a really interesting Twitter message.’” Exactly.

But in the meantime, the blogosphere has already run wild, and sooner or later you’ll be hearing someone tell you how science has shown that Twitter is bad for your brain. Just like another British scientist ran amok earlier this year with unsubstantiated speculation about how social networking sites were harming children’s brains.

Fortunately, the British have also provided us with several fine words for dealing with such situations: Balderdash. Poppycock. Twaddle.

To me, the worst part about this is that it totally obscures a deeper, more important question. As Dr. Alloway says on her web site, “Cutting-edge research has shown that working memory—the ability to store and manipulate information—is the most important learning skill a child can have. Working memory is the foundation of good grades and a successful life beyond the classroom. Without it, students would fail at every task, and with it they can dramatically improve their classroom performance.”

Clearly working memory as defined is an important skill. But why is it THE most important skill? It makes sense to say that if you believe that classroom performance as currently defined (store and manipulate information as per the teacher’s requirements) is in fact most important. But if you believe that there are more important skills, and that getting good grades is at least as much about social conditioning as it is about learning, then you would be asking a different set of questions. Ones, sadly, which we are not going to hear in this media blitz of misinformation…

The collective net worth of the super rich on Forbes’s annual list of the 400 wealthiest Americans fell by $300 billion over the past 12 months, and the tech sector spilled its share of the red ink.

Microsoft’s Bill Gates lost the most — at least on paper. His net worth dropped from $57 to $50 billion, not enough, however, to keep him from topping the list for the 16th year in a row. Two current and former Microsofties were close behind: Paul Allen (No. 17) lost $4.5 billion and Steve Ballmer (No. 14) gave up $1.7 billion.

Other notable losers were Michael Dell (No. 13), down $2.8 billion, and SAS’s James Goodnight (No. 33), off $1.9 billion.

In this company, the $600 million that Apple CEO Steve Jobs lost on paper doesn’t seem so bad. In fact, on the strength of the $5.1 billion he still has, he moved 18 spots up the Forbes 400 list, from No. 61 to No. 43.

Below: The 12 richest tech moguls and their change in net worth. One actually got richer. Can you guess who?

Sun was an early proponent of open source, giving the concept a huge boost when it opened up its Java software. And McNealy funded and helped promote a project called Curriki to create open-source textbooks that will ultimately be free, via the Internet.

One of Microsoft’s big bets when it decided to challenge Apple’s iPod in 2006 was a feature known as Zune-to-Zune wireless sharing — or “squirting,” as Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer dubbed it. People could use the built-in Wi-Fi to send a full song to another Zune device nearby, for as many as three playbacks.

It’s the first half of 2009, and unemployment’s rising to a 26-year high of 9.5%. Sound like the perfect time to launch an aggressive technology-driven product?
It was for Progressive Insurance, which kicked off its “Name Your Price” Web sitetool, letting customers build their own insurance policies, starting with what they think they can afford. It was for Coca-Cola, which tested a prototype fountain drink dispenser IT developed over two years with the company’s R&D team, letting consumers mix a variety of new flavors while aligning Coke with a select group of fast-food restaurants to analyze buying data and manage inventories better.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison is expected to announce a piece of hardware coming out under Oracle’s Exadata brand at a joint press conference with Sun Microsystems Tuesday. The joint press conference is unusual in that Oracle is still at a preliminary stage of acquiring Sun. Companies usually avoid talking about how they will change their product lines or the nature of future products until mergers are completed.

Your pregame fix on Sunday’s can officially be satisfied 1 hour earlier this year because both Vikings Weekly and Vikings GamePlan have moved to Sunday mornings in 2009. Weekly will air at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays and GamePlan will air immediately after, at 10:30 a.m.

Weekly and GamePlan will be broadcast on KMSP FOX 9 and also simultaneously on FSNorth, leading into the FOX national pregame broadcast. Both shows and both show hosts – Ann Carroll (Weekly) and Paul Allen (GamePlan) have been nominated for Upper Midwest Emmy Awards – which will be handed out on Saturday, September 26th.

Jared Allen has a new segment on Vikings Weekly called “Jaredwalking,” in which the boisterous DE interacts with people while out and about around town. GamePlan also has a new segment in which fans can submit questions to vikings.com and then Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress will answer a selected question in the program.

GamePlan also features a new segment that looks back on the 1969 NFL Championship season – a different topic from that season will be featured each week. Segments back again this year from last season’s broadcast include Film Study with Childress, where Allen and the coach review film of the upcoming opponent exclusive from inside Childress’ office.

After a long and distinguished career in the NFL. Mike Holmgren retired from coaching and handed over the reins to his understudy, Jim Mora Jr , as coach of the Seattle Seahawks .

Mike Holmgren (right) on the sidelines with his then assistant coach Jim Mora Jr . Mora now takes the helm as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. picture appears courtesy of Icon SMI / Matt A. Brown .........................

Holmgren’s predigree alone assures him that he’ll be a first ballot Hall of Famer when he’s due for enshrinement in Canton, Ohio. One only has to look down the list coaches that’ve learned under the auspices of the man. And who can doubt his prowess as a coach ? The success he had with the Green Bay Packers alone, assures us of this. And the fact that he brought about as to the change of environment with regard to the Seahawks and the fan-dom there. It brings about some semblance for the franchise that for much of its existence has been mired in mediocrity. That being said, even with the ownership of Microsoft co-founder and multi-billionaire magnate Paul Allen , in tow. The one thing that’s still missing from the team’s trophy cabinet, is that of the Vince Lombardi trophy to signify the franchise’s wining of the Superbowl.

Seattle Seahawks' owner Paul Allen (left) seen here alongside team CEO Tod Leiweke on the sidlines at the end of a game against the Baltimore Ravens in December 2007 . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ John Froschauer ....................

The one thing that can be said of the Seattle Seahawks’ franchise. It is that they can be either be consistently consistent as to their regular season travails. Or they can at times perform very much like the most inept franchise in all of the NFL. Now , not wanting to question Holmgren’s decision as to his successor. I was as surprised as any , when it was announced that Jim Mora Jr would be taking over the reins of this team. Albeit , what little success he’d achieved as a coach was with the now discredited and disgraced Michael Vick . When both were taking the Atlanta Falcons to their most recent of successes. But as we all know, when it all began to spiral out of control. Mora was nowhere to be seen , as he and the then disgraced star were basically like rats on a sinking ship. Mora was fired and as we all have seen , Vick chose to eschew his talents elsewhere.

For the Seahawks and the wilderness of the NFC West , which they play in. It has to be said that the division is one of the less endearing divisions in all of the NFL. From the hapless San Francisco 49ers , to the even more absurd St Louis Rams and a now resurgent Arizona Cardinals . It has to be said that whatever interest is taken in the division is merely from the standpoint of their fans and their own perceived interest. And that of the interest shown by the broadcast networks.

Coming off an immensely disappointing 4-12 season in 2008. The Seahawks hope to rebound and acquit themselves well in the ‘09 season. And if nothing else , the return of Matt Haselbeck along with the acquisition of T. J. Houshmandzadeh and recently acquired free agent Edgerrin James ought to stand them in good stead. That being said , the team’s fortunes just won’t lie in how they acquit themselves on the field of play. But primarily with the astuteness shown by Mora as a coach. I for one sincerely doubt that he is indeed the right man for the job. But the Seahawks have made their decision. And they will have to live and die by it .

<img src="http://americansportsblog.wordpress.com/files/2009/08/seahawks-quarterback-matt-hasselbeck-makes-a-pass-to-tight-end-john-carlson-during-the-second-half-of-the-teams-preseason-game-against-the-chiefs.jpg" alt="Seahawks' quarterback Matt Hasselbeck makes a pass to tight end John Carlson during the second half of the team's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City, Missouri, .
On first appearance when one looks at this Seattle Seahawks’ roster. You can clearly see that this team ought to have fared a great better than it has done over the years. They’ve a bevy of players that’d be the desire of a number of teams around the league. But seemingly they’ve never been able to put together a consistent string of results and then play themselves into contention when it really mattered the most.Either that came from Holmgren’s own failings as a coach. Or one could attribute it to the fact that was no real leadership on the field of play. Even if a team is beset by injuries , one would still expect for them to play with a great deal of zeal. Being straightforward in that regard it may well have been a mixture of both. It may well be a poor excuse as to what ails the franchise. But make of it , what you will.

RENTON,Wash-(AP) The Seattle Seahawks have let go of four players ahead of the deadline to cut the roster to 75.

Seattle waived defensive tackle Kevin Brown, fullback Dan Curran, linebacker Shane Simmons and tight end John Tereshinski. The Seahawks made the moves Sunday , one day after their 14-10 preseason win at Kansas City.

Teams have until Tuesday to trim rosters to 75 players. The final cutdown to 53 players has to be done by Sept. 5.

If there’s one thing that we’ve come to learn about Holmgren coached teams. It was that they were always proficient on both sides of the ball. That being said their failings of late were in particular on the offensive side of the ball. The loss of Pro Bowler , Matt Hasselbeck for much of last season , basically left the cupboard bare in terms of a reliable backup. And given the fact that watching Seneca Wallace on the field of play, was in essence very much akin to watching a doe being hunted by a pride of lions. He was very much caught in the proverbial set of headlights as usual . And he acquitted himself , thus.

If the Seahawks are to get back, whereby they’re to be a dominant force to be reckoned with in the NFC West as wll as the NFC as a whole. Then this season, they’ll have to step up their game and prove to the rest of the league as well as their fans . That they’re rightfully back in their customary place, as one of the top teams in the NFC and a force to be reckoned with. If anything , they’ve been very much the title of this piece . ….. Sleepless In Seattle ….Who Knew ?
