I guess you could say I have a pretty distinctive taste in music, I don’t know, I hear something, I like it/I hate it. I mostly listen to Triple J, and regularly hit up Unearthed because its just a plethora of unseen talent! I’m into my local bands Anyways, so thats pretty much what I have been listening to the most, as of late!

Remember how I’m always going on and on about how A Place to Bury Strangers is my new favorite band?

No?

Maybe I’m thinking of Whitey. Or you are.

Anyway, they are. They are like the Jesus and Mary Chain + My Bloody Valentine + a fuckload of noise. So: fun. This remix, however, charms the hell out of the noisy New Yorkers and takes them on a laidback and melodic spin dangerously close to the dancefloor.

Faux Pas shakes up a fellow Antipodean’s tune about life, the universe and everything and turns it into something resembling a Gary Numan track making love to some sort of wonderful thing made out of flanging and phasing. Couldn’t be more pleasant and agreeably hummable.

Plus Faux Pas himself is an all-around good guy who actually stopped by here and corrected just one of my many factual errors. And he called me “Big Ears,” which I have chosen to believe is a compliment.

Straight out of Rocky’s hometown by way of Manhattan comes this new synthpop combo, whose M.O. is making fucking good tracks that sound like all the best things from the early 80′s, namely early New Order, Clan of Xymox and Echo & the Bunnymen. How can you say “no” to that?

From out of England (as is the case with most fine dance music – except when it comes out of France), SMD bring their disco strut to this track, which posits the age old complaint – “I’ve got it all, but I don’t have you.”

The difference here are the tongue-thru-cheek lyrics, which name drop everything from PM Dawn, Peter Tosh to Minidiscs and, notably, a “biodiesel dirigible.” Fun, fun, fun and all done with the swaggering overconfidence that says, “Hand me that yardstick so I can measure my cock.” Highly recommended.

PNAU, whom we last heard front-mouthing for the Groove Armada on their blistering single “Warsaw,” turns in this blissfully melancholic track which cruises gorgeously into your forebrain, thanks to the incredibly sure production of Fear of Tigers.

Andy Preece’s men bossed the first period, but failed to capitalise as the sides went in at the break with the score goalless.

The visitors broke the deadlock against the run of play five minutes after the restart. Robins skipper Paul Dempsey poked home after a scramble in the Vics penalty area.

But Nat Kerr restored parity within a minute, powering in a header from a corner kick.

Vics completed the comeback on 58 minutes with the goal of the game, Jamie Vermiglio volleying a sublime effort across goal and into the top left hand corner from the edge of the area.

Ian Herring put the result beyond all doubt from the penalty spot with 12 minutes remaining, after substitute Lee Elam had been hauled down in the box.

Wayne Riley added extra gloss to the scoreline by pouncing on a Dan Lowson parry from a Michael Connor effort on 85 minutes.

The result takes Vics up three places to 11th in the table.

1. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - Phoenix

I’m quite certain that I’m not the only person who has this album listed as their number for oh-nine. The Parisian boys have brought us something quite remarkable indeed. ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix’, is one seriously catchy indie-rock record with killer hooks and catchy melodies. Stand out tracks from this record are ‘Litszomania’, ‘Lasso’, ’1901′ and ‘Countdown (I’m Sick for the Big Sun)’, but don’t get me wrong, I’m not one to skip tracks on this one. As a whole, this record is strong, addictive and it makes you want to skip down the street; and you know that’s always a good thing.

2. Manners - Passion Pit

So, when you think of Passion Pit, what word slips to mind?.. if it’s ‘Sleepyhead’ we’re on the same page here! For me, Passion Pit were the breakthrough artists of 2009, they came out of nowhere, and brought a breath of fresh air to the music scene. Don’t get wrong ‘Manners’ is not a one single record, it consists of eleven, well written and well executed songs which make you want to dance like you’re in a club or something.

Stand out Tracks: ‘Sleepyhead’, ‘Little Secrets’, ‘Moth’s Wings’ & ‘Let Your Love Grow Tall’

3. The Ecstatic – Mos Def

To be honest, I’m new the world of Mos Def. I’m certainly not ashamed to say this, because it’s better late than never!  This year he brought out a top notch, well produced and well written piece of music history. The Ecstatic is a signature Mos Def record, one that uses a plethora of samples in a way no one else can! Listening to it is like following a narrative, there’s a story, there’s empathy and most of all there’s a moral.

Stand out Tracks: ‘Auditiorium Ft. Slick Rick’, ‘Roses Ft. Georgia Anne Muldrow’, ‘History Ft. Talib Kweli’ & ‘Priority’

4. Homesick – A Day To Remember

This choice may seem odd to some of you, but you know, I’m a pop punk kid at heart, so naturally, I’m a sucker for catchy choruses, gang vocals and summer anthems. What can I say; it’s what I grew up with. ‘Homesick’, is the only ‘heavy’ record I bought this year, and there’s a reason behind this! it consists of the said characteristics above and after a spin of this record, you are left with this urge to see ADTR live, and when that happens, you know there’s something special going on.

Stand out Tracks: ‘The Downfall Of Us All’, ‘NJ Legion Iced Tea’, ‘Have Faith In Me’, &‘If It Means A Lot To You’

5. Sigh No More - Mumford & Sons

The first time I heard Mumford & Sons, I was literally in awe. The single ‘Little Lion Man’ was the perfect song to introduce these british lads to the world. ‘Sigh No More’, is a delicate folk-acoustic record, with a strong British flavour. Marcus Mumford’s voice and accent is charismatic and to be honest, how can one deny a band with a banjo?

Stand out Tracks: ‘Little Lion Man’, ‘The Cave’, ‘White Blank Page’ & ‘Timshel’

6. Everything Is True – Paul Dempsey

For all those living outside Australia, you’re probably thinking Paul who?.. well at least you’re curious right?! ‘Everything Is true’ is Demsey’s debut solo record, in addition to his role as Something For Kate’s lead singer. This acoustic record is utterly beautiful. It’s soft spoken, so pretty, and with an incredible orchestral sound-scape. It’s one of those records that you hear and you just know you have to own it. This was the record I turned to this year when I was down and out.

Stand out Tracks: ‘Ramona Was A Waitress’, ‘Fast Friends’ &‘Man of the Moment’

7. Ordinary Riches – Company of Thieves

Ordinary Riches is the debut album from Chicago’s spunkiest Company Of Thieves. This record is outstanding from start to finish, believe me! Their singer Genevieve Schatz has such an amazing and strong voice; imagine Feist with more attitude and a full band behind her. There’s an indie rock, jazz and blues aesthetic on ‘Ordinary Riches’ and its one of those records you blast when you’re having a good day.

Stand out Tracks: ‘Oscar Wilde’, ‘Pressure’, ‘The Fire Song’, ‘Even In The Dark’ & ‘Under The Umbrella’

8. Mama, I’m Swollen - Cursive

After all these years, I still think Cursive is one of the most underrated bands still around. Their sound is smart, complex and seriously mind-blowing. Tim Kasher is a freaken genius! ‘Mama, I’m Swollen’ is another record which should be heard by the masses! You experience such intensity on this record, a mix of anger and fragility in each song. Kasher’s raspy voice adds such a different element to their sound that you can’t really compare them to anyone.

Stand out Tracks: ‘I Couldn’t’ Love You Anymore’, ‘Mama, I’m Satan’, ‘We’re Going To Hell’ & From The Hips’

9. Chasing Hamburg – Polar Bear Club

Polar Bear Club; a post-hardcore band from New York have been causing a bit of a stir with their 09 release. Think ‘Rise Against’ meets ‘Gaslight Anthem’ meets some freaken awesome anthems. Thank God I checked this band out because this album is just too good to pass. It’s just raw emotion with that punk rock feel. It gives you hope that the scene will still produce some quality music in the midst of everything else that’s happening in it.

Stand out Tracks: ‘Chasing Hamburg’, ‘Boxes’, ‘Living Saints’ & ‘One Hit Back’,

10. Not Without A Fight – New Found Glory

As a long time New Found Glory fan, ‘Not Without A Fight’ was one of my most anticipated records for the year. In their last couple of albums, NFG experimented and tried new techniques in their recording process which may have distorted their natural sound and essence. However this year’s release captures the intrinsic quality of their earlier albums. It’s pop punk, plain and simple. It’s melodic with catchy choruses and fun gang vocals. ‘Not Without A Fight’ delivers and brings NFG back on top of their game.

Stand out Tracks: ‘Listen To Your Friends’, ‘I’ll Never Lose Again’, ‘Right Where We Left Off’ & ‘Don’t Let This Be The End’

Gosh where do I start, this was an incredible night of beautiful music and even more incredible performances by an array of Australian leading lights of the music industry.

At the beginning of the night it was great to hear people in the audience sharing their stories of when they first heard Paul Kelly’s music. For me I remember seeing Paul Kelly and the Dots on Countdown and that was it, I was a goner. And yes, that was almost thirty years ago.

Paul Dempsey (born 1976 in Melbourne) is the lead singer, guitarist and principal songwriter of Australian rock group Something for Kate. Paul was a founding member of the band, and in August 2009 is to release his first solo album whilst continuing his work with Something for Kate. A multi-instrumentalist, Paul has also produced and co-written records for other artists.
