The Fahrenheit Twins by Told by an Idiot

Told by an Idiot, the collective theatre duo of Hayley Carmichael, and Paul Hunter (not forgetting John Wright dished on the side) are back in full force with a new piece, The Fahrenheit Twins currently playing as part of the Bite programme at the Barbican Pit Theatre. Bringing together their adaptation of Michel Faber’s book of the same name, Told by an Idiot along with director Matthew Dunster have created a surreal landscape of snow, a childs playground.

There is something quite striking about The Fahrenheit Twins when first entering the Pit Theatre. There is no way of missing Naomi Wilkinson’s set design, a circular rotating disc of white fabric and fur, complete with a slide that reaches to the heights of the lighting rig. A wind turbine off to one side that reaches from ground to ceiling. The expanse of fur and white, it’s like something out of a muted Salvador Dali painting. Coupled with Gareth Fry’s frolicking playful music, it’s all something of a winter wonderland.

A slightly surreal moment, the husky experience

I suppose that is exactly how Told by an Idiot want us to view this piece, through the goggles of a surreal storytelling of two twins, Tainto’lilth and Marko’cain who live with their parents deep in the Artic in an exploration station. The twins are played by Carmichael and Hunter, along with every other character. They change swiftly from parents to child, to animal with a slight change of costume and a different voice. The effect is actually quite impressive for something so simple.

There are undoubtedly some poignant moments throughout this piece, but there was something nagging away at me as I watched this. I know that Told by an Idiot are a superb theatre company, with a great track record. The set design and music, along with Philip Gladwell’s lighting design all combined to make for a spectacle of the eyes and ears, so it wasn’t this aspect nagging at me. It was rather, Carmichael and Hunter’s performance itself. Whilst the piece itself is an intriguing tale – its execution didn’t quite live up to what was expected.

The playground experience of theatre

The peformance of The Fahrenheit Twins didn’t flat line, it wasn’t dead and emotionless, but it lacked some kind of energy. Certain moments became repetitive and at times I didn’t quite understand what or even why this was being shown. Particularly the continual use of the husky masks. Whilst at times comic, during other moments it became over-done. Don’t get me wrong, The Fahrenheit Twins is to some extent an enjoyable piece, but one to stick in my mind for a long time? No, I think not.

Told by an Idiot under the direction of Dunster have created a playful piece, where the performers really do create a winter wonderland out of Wilkinson’s set, which has been designed in a multi-functional way, compartments dotted across the stage hiding most of the props and added surprises.

Sliding across the stage and manipulating fabric into the form of their dead mother, the tale is actually quite heart warming. The twins wanting to find a way to bury their dead mother, head into the Artic with the hope that there will be a sign from somewhere as to what they are meant to do. Throwing themselves against the elements of the Artic weather, their support for each other and their maturity in desperate times is lovingly shown by Carmichael and Hunter.

If you’re looking to see devised theatre that doesn’t quite enter the world of nonsense but equally creates a surreal landscape and story, then The Fahrenheit Twins is certainly for you. In fact, I’d implore anyone who is interested in a different theatre night out to embark on Told by an Idiot’s new piece. I’ve not been put off but excited by what will come next out of this company.

Hoy la selección es un monográfico sobre el desaparecido Michael Jackson. “El rey del pop” nos dejó muchos videos en los que ponía una especial dedicación. Algunos eran pequeños cortometrajes, películas sintetizadas en 4 minutos, como el primero de esta serie, Liberian Girl. El último single de su álbum BAD se promocionó con una filmación en la que aparecen muchos amigos de Hollywood del cantante. la nómina es extensa: Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, Carl Weathers, Dan Aykroyd, John Travolta, Steve Guttenberg….

Uno de los últimos que grabó fue You Rock My World en 2001.  Basado en una historia escrita por él mismo y por Paul Hunter, podemos ver en pantalla a actores de la talla de Marlon Brando, Mickey Rourke, Michael Madsen, Chris Tucker, Billy Drago y a la actriz y coreógrafa Kishaya Dudley, que interpreta a la chica que origina toda la trama.

En 1991 John Landis (Granujas a todo ritmo, El príncipe de Zamunda) dirigió un de los más famosos de Jacko, Black or White. Las “celebrities” que hacen acto de presencia son el niño de moda en aquella época por la saga Sólo en Casa, Macaulay Kulkin, en el papel de padres el bonachón Norm de la serie de TV Cheers (George Wendt) y Tess Harper, la modelo Tyra Banks y la artista musical y actriz Cree Summer. Como curiosidad decir que en la canción participa tocando la guitarra Slash de Guns & Roses, y que el riff suena parecido al Hurt So Good de John Cougar Mellencamp.

Perteneciente también al disco Dangerous, In The Closet se proyectó un año más tarde que Black or White. Como respuesta a las dudas sobre su orientación sexual, Michael escribió este “Dentro del armario” en el que hablaba de una relación oculta entre un hombre y una mujer. Para rodar la historia se acompañó de la modelo Naomi Campbell, que despliega sus movimientos más sensuales a lo largo del video. Aunque los coros de la canción se acreditaron a una “Mystery Girl” luego se supo que fueron obra de la princesa Estefanía de Mónaco.

Ζέστη κάνει, η βαρεμάρα χτυπάει κόκκινο, η αντίστροφη μέτρηση για τις πολυπόθητες διακοπές έχει ξεκινήσει, το πέρασμα των ωρών, των ημερών, των εβδομάδων μόνο με το βασανιστήριο της σταγόνας μπορεί να συγκριθεί . Επόμενο είναι, η όρεξη μου για ενασχόληση με το μπλογκ να έχει πάει προσωρινά περίπατο .

Ήθελα όμως να μοιραστώ, με όσους θερμόπληκτους αναγνώστες έχουν απομείνει, την τελευταία περίπτωση μουσικού βίντεο που μ’έκανε αρχικά να γουρλώσω το μάτι ( μη σας πω και το αυτί ) και στη συνέχεια να γελάσω με την καρδιά μου, τόσο με το τραγούδι όσο και με την εικόνα .

Η ασπόνδυλη Shakira-Shakira λοιπόν επιστρέφει στα μουσικά πράγματα μετά από πολύμηνη απουσία και … απογοητεύει . Το single λέγεται ” She Wolf “ και άνετα θα μπορούσε να το είχε πει η Madonna . Ναι, αλλά πότε ? Εκεί γύρω στα 1983, για τόσο πρωτότυπο ήχο μιλάμε . Το δε ρεφραίν θα φορεθεί πολύ στα παιδικά πάρτυ μετά την έναρξη του σχολικού έτους, είμαι σίγουρη . Η Shakira προσπαθεί να γίνει περισσότερο ποπ αλλά η συνταγή δεν πέτυχε . Και 10″ – 20″ με funky κιθάρα στη αρχή και άλλα τόσα με όμορφα έγχορδα στο τέλος δε σώζουν την κατάσταση . Τέλος, είναι θλιβερό το πόσο ” θάβεται ” η φωνάρα της με αυτά τα φωνητικά ( α, ξέχασα υπάρχει κι ένα σημείο που ουρλιάζει ναζιάρικα, και καλά σα λύκαινα . μιλάμε για άσμα με μεγάλες φωνητικές απαιτήσεις ) . Τη Shakira τη συμπαθώ πάρα πολύ, πιστεύω ότι είναι μια από τις καλύτερες γυναικείες φωνές της εποχής μας . Μετά όμως από τέτοιο αυτοχαντάκωμα που κάνει, κοντεύω να χάσω πάσα ιδέα . Λες και ζήλεψε την άλλη ηλίθια, τη Lady Gaga ( όνομα και πράμα ) και είπε να κάνει κάτι ανάλογο κι εκείνη . Πού είναι η Shakira του ” Ojos Asi ” και του ” La Tortura ” ? Κρίμα …

Το βίδεο κλιεπ από την άλλη, συμπληρώνει επάξια το τραγούδι . Κιτς το άσμα, κιτς και το βίντεο . Ό,τι θες έχει μέσα . Έναν φόρο τιμής στο Twilight στο ξεκίνημα, τη σπηλιά της Barbarella, τη ντίσκο από το ” Ρόδα Τσάντα και Κοπάνα “, την ταράτσα από το πατρικό της στην Κολομβία, διαφήμιση για στρώματα και μαξιλάρια στο τέλος και φυσικά, ένα κλουβί με τα όλα του . Νύχι ψεύτικο-κόκκινο-μακρύ-έτοιμο-να-βγει-ανά-πάσα-στιγμή θες ? Έχει . Μαλλί 2 μέτρα εξτένσιονς by Γωγουλίνι ? Κι από αυτό έχει . Φακό επαφής που κάνει το μάτι σέξυ και αντροφάγο ? Αμέ . Παπούτσια-πολυκατοικίες ? Καλέ ναι ! Φορεματάκι-δίχτυ, οικογενειακό κειμήλιο από τα ’80s ? Of course !

Τη χορογραφία αρνούμαι να τη σχολιάσω ! Κρίμα βρε Jake Nava και έχεις σκηνοθετήσει καλύτερα πράγματα . Ευχαριστούμε πάντως για τις στιγμές χαμόγελου που μας χάρισες .

( το βίδεο είναι φρέσκο, μόλις δυο εβδομάδων γι’αυτό και λίγο δυσεύρετο στο διαδίκτυο . έφαγα τον κόσμο λέμε . )

Καταλαβαίνω ότι ο απανταχού ανδρικός πληθυσμός πολύ θα εκτιμήσει τα ρούχα και τα κάλλη της Shakira και ο γυναικείος θα θαυμάσει την ευλυγισία της . Αν ο στόχος ήταν η εικόνα να αποπνέει ερωτισμό και σεξουαλικότητα, λυπάμαι αλλά σύμφωνα με την αισθητική μου, δεν πετυχαίνεται με τίποτα . Ως αντίλογο παραθέτω τρία απλά παραδείγματα από την τελευταία δεκαετία ( η οποία, πλάκα-πλάκα, όπου νά’ναι τελειώνει και ούτε που τό’χω καταλάβει ! ) .

Και τώρα που βλέπω αυτά τα βίντεο, σκέφτομαι, συνειδητοποιώ, ενίσταμαι και διαμαρτύρομαι για το φαλλοκρατισμό της μουσικής βιομηχανίας που μας αφήνει  παραπονεμένες . Πόσα χρόνια έχει να εμφανιστεί ένας αξιοπρεπώς γοητευτικός και σέξυ ξένος τραγουδιστής, να ανοίξει κι εμάς το μάτι μας ? Και δεν εννοώ να τσιτσιδώνεται απαραίτητα . Μόνο με τους παλιότερους θα πορευόμαστε ? Πόσο να αντέξουν κι αυτοί ?  Απαράδεκτο .

Κι αυτά . Τα ολίγα, ανάλαφρα κι ανέμελα . Δείτε το βίντεο της Shakira μόνο και μόνο για να ξέρετε με τι πρόκειται να μας βομβαρδίσουν και να μας κάνουν πλύση εγκεφάλου τις επόμενες εβδομάδες σε ραδιόφωνα και τηλεόραση . Περαστικά μας .

It occurs to me I never linked to two stories I wrote about possible wind farms in Clinton County. My friends who head up the local green energy/green jobs advocacy group would be appalled.

when i’m editing (and waiting for shit to render on FCP!) i always make playlists of music videos with shots/transitions/effects/lighting & blah blah that in one way or another inspire an idea for my own project. It’s especially useful to watch videos outside of the genre your working in but really hip hop x rap x pop vids always kill it – and on a sidebar people who take issue with the grindin’ girls in rap videos seriously need to start hating on dance videos, cause honey those really bad house x techno x eurotrash clips take misogyny and the exploitation of women to a whole new level.  

Anyhow in it’s simplicity the video for Justin Timberlake’s, My Love, is incredible! The black & white, the fast cuts, the set design and the girl with her leg over T.I are majik in every sense – oh & the extended intro still gives me fruit tingles. It should be noted that the clip was directed by the brilliant Paul Hunter, who is probably responsible for most of your favourite r ‘n’ b videos: 

This past Tuesday, May 19th, a crowd of about 80 gathered at East Clinton High School in Lees Creek to listen to presentations by two National Wind Power Companies. The large crowd which  included local residents, farmers, and public officials, exceeded planners’ expectations–as Executive Director of the Regional Planning Commission Chris Schock put it [the crowd], was “beyond my wildest expectations.”

The convening of this meeting was the result of the many hours and the tireless effort of local resident, and citizen extraordinairre Paul Hunter. Hunter, who for months has been pursuing wind power companies in an attempt to get commercial turbines up in the northeast corridor of Clinton County–the only potential area with today’s technology.

The presentations were given by two speakers: Jason Dagger of Everpower and P.J. Saliterman of OwnEnergy, both based in New York City.

Everpower, which currently has a project in Ohio, and seven states total, focuses primarily on large-scale commericial wind farms.  OwnEnergy, approaches wind power projects from a community-level, eyeing more modest, mid-sized projects that involve community cooperatives. They are currently developing their inaugural project in West Texas.

While both companies have no formal plans to enter the market in Clinton County, they both did speak of the potential viability for commerical turbines in Clinton County.

Mr. Hunter has devoted much of his own time, money, and resources to identifying potential enterprise developments for Clinton County. He is a strong advocate for advanced and renewable energy development, and has demonstrated the value that active citizens bring to the growth and strengthening of local communities. At ECC, we strongly applaud Paul’s efforts and the example he sets for the community.
