Time for off topic. I’ve said all I want to, or anyone could read, about fiscal timing. I am

Time for off topic. I’ve said all I want to, or anyone could read, about fiscal timing.

I am an obsessive user of the iPod, eternally grateful to leave behind those barbaric days of mix tapes and minidiscs . As well as podcasts (Guardian, BBC comedy, that sort of sad middle-aged stuff), I am always looking for the Next Favourite Track, that wonderful uplifting moment when you realise you are going to love a 2-15 minute piece for ever. (except, of course, you won’t).

From my point of view, the trade-off is worth it if I listen to 10 pieces of rubbish for every hit. I probably buy 10 tracks every other day, most of them classical, on the strictly impartial advice of the InterWeb and its Lists. It is well worth ploughing through half of this for example to find that sublime slow movement from the Beethoven’s 5th piano concerto.

So I was deeply, sadly excited to see that the Times was adding to its 100 best books (for which read, novels) of the decade, and 100 films, with the 100 best albums of the Noughties. This is seriously useful: posterity is a wonderful filter. Thanks to posterity, most of us would not have heard of a mediocrity like Salieri (without that movie). A lot of pointless ploughing through anonymous works is thereby saved.

But I don’t like the Times list. Instant posterity is clearly nowhere near as reliable. My first, most obnoxious reason, is this. There are too many old people on it. Here they are:

Neil Diamond Paul Simon Johnny Cash Paul Weller Paul McCartney David Bowie Brian Wilson Bob Dylan Madonna Bruce Springsteen Richard Hawley

Now, before you get cross (whoever YOU is), hear me out. I loved some of the defining work of the people above. I thought Dylan the equal of any other poet – until I read some other poetry. But now I have to admit that I don’t like anything he has done since 1974. And it’s because Pop is different from those other arts where the practitioner becomes better with age. Shakespeare, clearly, got better. His thoughts became more complex, his range of references wider, and so on. So too can classical composers grow. Beethoven’s last symphony is generally rated the best, as are his wonderful late string quartets. And in many professions – I would offer politics – I seriously doubt the ability of the early practitioner to make judgements as fine as in later life.

Now look at the history of pop. Would anyone honestly have heard of Paul McCartney if he had started in 1985, with “Spies like Us”? Or the Rolling Stones, with that dreadful song about rocks and a hard place? No, of course no. Ditto all the names up there. Pop is overwhelmingly about adolescence. Its lyrics, for what they are worth, are pathetically adolescent. When pop tries to be profound or clever, it is embarassing. It is not meant for that. It is meant to be overthetop, vainglorious, pretentious, and not worth 20 minutes of a university course.

The people who compiled the Times list clearly take it too seriously, because they want to to be so much more. This is their life, after all. Part of this need is a desire to think that pop talent exhibits some sort of continuity, an ability to mellow and deepen with age and experience – like the other great Arts. But it obviously is not so. Great pop bands mature incredibly quickly, and then suffer an embarassing long afterlife, an endless second-act-angst. It’s like someone who makes everyone laugh once at a dinner party, and then launches into longer and windier anecdotes. Get your coat.

Of course, they never get their coat. The Arctic Monkey’s last album was full of painfully obscure and dark lyrics, lots of poetical preachiness: ‘a more experimental, darker sound and even bleaker subject matter.’. Sorry, but that is not what got us buying those wonderful early songs, so honest and witty about chippy underachieving mid adolescence. The same has happened to my favourite band, Gomez.

I don’t know much about the Times’ more obscure choices, at least 30 of which I had not heard of. I can’t rate rap, and had always hoped Ali G or the Conchords would do for it what I had hoped Spinal Tap would do for heavy metal. I am not pretending I have more knowledge than the Times’ experts. This is their life after all. But one thing that is certain is that their combination of obscure and old has pushed away some amazing bands:

Noah and the Whale – just that first album

Gomez

Razorlight, again the first album, if only for the gloriously pretentious “in the City”

The Fratellis, again the first album. Chelsea Dagger must have been the most used track on the telly

Florence and the Machine

Dirty Pretty Things, both albums. Barat is clearly the genius of that combination.

The Killers, for God’s Sake. All three albums, but they clearly deserve some recognition for writing the best song of the decade. (scandalously used by David Cameron).

Badly Drawn Boy – the first 3 albums at least deserved a place. Like Nick Hornby I am affected by A Minor Incident.

I am sure I could go on. So could you. I would like to add one more. It is easily my favourite album of the decade, from one of the best TV shows, and just about the only one I am (currently) sure I’ll still listen to in 10 years’ time. Because pop is meant to be like that.

By taking pop too seriously, the Times have missed the point of it entirely.

Original words and music “Here, There, and Everywhere”, by John Lennon and Paul McCartney
Additional lyrics by Wayne A. Schneider

To lead a fettered life they need my mode to be fear…

Fear, making the case through the year
Changing my life from a cave in the sand
Nobody can deny that it’s done to scare

Scare, running with flames through their hair
Most of us thinking how dumb that must be
Someone is speaking, but she doesn’t know she’s scared

They want to play unfair, and if they deride me
I know I need never care
But to hear them is to see them play unfair
Knowing their goal is to scare

Each one believing that fear never dies
Watching my eyes and hoping I’m always scared

They want to play unfair, and if they deride me
I know I need never care
But to hear them is to see them play unfair
Knowing their goal is to scare

Each one believing that fear never dies
Watching my eyes and hoping I’m always scared

They will be scared, and play unfair
Fear, scare, and play unfair

Confira abaixo a imagem:

Good Envening New York City.

Good Evening New York City não é diferente.

Canções como Mrs. Vandebilt, Highway e Sing The Changes (ambas lançadas no seu projeto paralelo chamado Firemen), além do medley A Day In The Life / Give Peace A Chance, valem o (pequeno) investimento.

O vídeo triplicou a venda do disco e ajudou a popularizar a MTV.

Em 1985 ajudou a promover a megacampanha USA for África. A música-tema We Are the word (Nós somos o mundo), composta por Michael Jackson e Lionel Ritchie reuniu 44 cantores da “nata” do pop americano.

Aí ficou fácil porque conheci muita gente, as pessoas me viam tocando e faziam os convites.

Senhor F – Como você viu todas aquelas mudanças na segunda metade dos anos 60, a cena mod, a psicodelia, os Beatles fazendo Sgt. Peppers…

Me identifiquei profundamente com aquilo. Me chamaram na hora.

Toquei em Jet e Band on the Run.

E eu “deixe-me ver…” Topei na hora (risos).

Senhor F – Você achava fácil trabalhar com ele?

Howie Casey - Sim.

Senhor F – E a turnê?

Ficávamos no hotel, bebendo e esperando as novidades.

originally printed in the Trenton Times

BY BRENT JOHNSON

For 20 years, Pete Best barely played the drums.

You could call the former Beatle one of pop music’s greatest casualties. He was the group’s original drummer — until John, Paul and George replaced him with Ringo for reasons that remain a mystery even to Best.

He ditched music a few years later, beginning a two-decade career as a civil servant.

“I still had me drums,” Best, now 66, recalls in his charmingly cheeky Liverpudlian accent, ironically not a far cry from Ringo’s. “I just covered them up in a dustsheet.”

Not anymore. Forty-six years after his famous firing, he and the Pete Best Band have released their first record, a musical biography called Haymans Green. The group — which includes his younger brother Roag, who shares drumming duties with Pete — will play selections from the album at the Record Collector in Bordentown on Sunday.

The title of the album is an allusion the to street where Best’s childhood home sits in Liverpool.

Best Friends: Pete Best sandwiched between Lennon and Harrison.

“There’s so many memories there,” Best says via phone on a recent Monday morning from his hotel room during a tour stop in Ohio. “It was Beatle headquarters for many, many years.”

Best doesn’t harbor bitterness or regret. He already collaborated on a book and documentary about his time with the Beatles. Now, the album, which he co-wrote with his bandmates, is even awash in melodies and
chord progressions that recall Rubber Soul.

“People turn around and say it’s Beatlesque,” Best says. “Other people turn around and say they hear Crowded House. … “I think it’s natural. Simply because of the era, because it deals with my life story. There had to be a certain amount of Beatlesque in it. I mean, like every other band we’re influenced by them. I played with them.”

‘40-Odd Years Ago’

Best’s family was actually instrumental in the Beatles’ beginning. His mother, Mona, turned the basement of their Haymans Green house into the Casbah Coffee Club, a music venue designed for local bands. The Quarrymen — featuring a young John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison — played opening night on Aug. 29, 1959.

Best was a member of a different group, the Blackjacks. But in August 1960, McCartney phoned the 19-year-old Best with an offer: The Beatles were about to begin a tour of Hamburg, Germany, and they needed a drummer.

The result was a legendary trip filled with sex and raucous rock that helped define the group’s attitude and sound. It’s chronicled in a track on Haymans Green called “Around And Around.”

Over the next two years, the Best-era Beatles stormed through sets packed with American R&B and rock songs, donning leather jackets and greaser haircuts. They landed a deal with legendary German producer
Burt Kaempfert that resulted in recordings of a few covers, a few originals and a minor hit, when they backed singer Tony Sheridan on a rocking version of “My Bonnie.”

But in 1962, shortly after auditioning for producer George Martin and EMI Records in Britain, the band decided to oust Best, assigning manager Brian Epstein to break the news. Rumors for the reason were many: that Martin didn’t like his drumming, that McCartney was jealousof the attention women paid to the handsome Best, that the drummer was too introverted.

Best says he doesn’t waste his time speculating.

Pete Best circa 2005

“The drummer theory, which was the one that was given as the dismissal, has never held up water,” he says of the idea that Martin didn’t like his playing. “People laugh at that. … People who saw me play then and people who have seen me play on the road shows now turn around and say, ‘That couldn’t have been the reason.’

“To me, it’s like: Fine, it happened. I’ve lived my life. … I’ve got my health and happiness and a sense of humor. And if I can wake up every morning to that, why the hell have I got to worry about something which happened 40-odd years ago?”

Stepping Outside

1963: The Beatles break big in Britain.
1964: Ed Sullivan, Beatlemania.
1967: “Sgt. Pepper.”

All the while, Best was bouncing around bands, releasing a few minor records.

But in 1968, he took the 9-to-5 route and focused on his family. The first single from Hayman Green, “Step Outside,” is about that period.

“You’re married, you have to basically step outside the business, have a look ’round, see what else was available, you had a family you have to provide security for,” explains Best, who has two daughters with
Kathy, his wife of for more than 40 years. “If you listen to the lyrics, that’s what you do. You’re stepping outside, seeing what’s available and making your own decision, which way you’re gonna go.”

Then, in 1988, Best agreed to play a one-off gig in Liverpool.

“My mother and my wife Kathy were there at the show,” he recalls, “and basically came up afterwards and turned around and said, ‘You don’t know it, Pete, but you’re going to be going back into show business.’
And how right they were.”

The Pete Best Band has been around for the last six years, featuring a revolving set of musicians he’s known from Liverpool. Appropriately, they recorded Haymans Green at a studio built on the first floor of
Best’s family home, right above the Casbah — which is still a tourist attraction in his hometown.

A Laugh And A Joke

As for the Beatles? Best played on a few bills with his former bandmates shortly after his sacking. But he says he hasn’t formally spoken with any of them since he was let go.

“If they want to get in touch with me, they know where I am,” says Best, who still lives in Liverpool. “I’ve tried to get in touch with them — not now, but in the early days. But it was pointless. You have different priorities in life.”

He’s open to the idea of speaking with McCartney or Starr, the only remaining members alive. And he certainly doesn’t plan on finding out what actually happened all those years ago.

“We’re no longer young kids anymore,” Best says. “We’ve matured, we’ve grown, we’re on the latter end of our careers. … It’s like, ‘Well, hang on a minute. Before we leave the planet, let’s get together and
have a laugh and a joke. Not re-open up old wounds again about what happened 40-odd bloody years ago.’ No one’s interested in that. At least I’m not.”

Best says he’s a Beatles fan, though. He has what he calls a “comprehensive album collection” of Fab Four recordings — which he never had to buy, since people often gave him records.

His favorite is The White Album.

“I think instead if they put it into one album, it would have been slightly better,” he says. “But I think it’s an old favorite of mine. It more or less shows what they were all about.”

A few of the recordings Best played on with the Beatles were released in 1995 as part of the famed “Anthology” series. And Best has made a late-life career touring the U.S. with the Pete Best Band. In addition
to Haymans Green numbers, they mix in Beatles-era covers like “Kansas City,” “Slow Down” and “Besame Mucho.”

His legacy is still growing, too. Best was recently inducted into the Liverpool music hall of fame. And he made a cameo in the recent comedy The Rocker, appropriately about a former hard-rock drummer kicked out a band before it hit stardom.

After the album is released internationally, the Pete Best Band may tour a few other countries, as well. Then, maybe a new record next year.

“If the response continues to be the way it is at the moment, we’ll be back in the recording studio,” he says. “It’s as simple as that.”

No more dustsheets on drum sets.
