This was the first collaboration I ever did with Chalie Boy, for Rapid Ric’s Fistful of Dollars mixtape hosted by Trae and Paul Wall five years ago.

Ric called all giddy, and emailed me an mp3 with the hook on it. I was impressed, and started venting on the uncharacteristically long verse immediately.

I don’t think I’ve done as many joints with anyone as I have with J (of Reelaktz), Element7D and Chalie aka the only one of them who still raps.

For what it’s worth, he was #6 on BET’s 106th & Park today.

H-Town. I don’t have any urge to ever go there but for some reason I am obsessed with the rap scene. It’s not the usual stuff I listen to and it is in no way lyrically above the rest or even close to that but for some reason I’m in awe of the tracks that Houston artists put out. Whether it’s music about the hood, drugs, fly honies, rims, cash, or purple syrup I can’t help but give all my attention and leave my ears wide open. I think its the swagger that Houston artists have mixed with decent lyrics that keep them forever present in the rap game. I have been listening to H-Town rap since I was a kid and the Geto Boys were on and since then I have never felt that the scene fell off or was performing subpar as has been the case in the Bay and even NY. No matter how you feel about H-Town rap, as compared to other rap scenes and sub-genres, the music is great, the lyrics are catchy, the MCs tell the story well, and the tracks are consistent as hell. Much love H-Town.

I remember when the Nelly song “Grillz” played on the car radio one day during a family vacation, and sitting between my parents in the car, I explained to them what a “grill” was, and just how important it was if you wanted to be anyone who’s anyone in the rap/hip-hop industry.

As attractive as I find grills (as in, not even slightly)  I couldn’t help but be “captivated” standing in front of Paul Wall today at the Sheraton Laguna Guam resort— not because I was awed by his C-list celebrity  status, but more because he was flashing a  $10,000 mouthful of bling my way.

That’s right, 10 grand. Kinda’ puts into perspective the braces you got in middle school, eh?

Il Rapper Paul Wall ha pensato di scavalcare i classici problemi legati al budget per la realizzazione del suo ultimo clip, girandolo interamente con un iPhone 3GS assistito dal regista Amir Valina (e utilizzando non poca post-produzione).
Ad ogni modo MTV ha già iniziato i passaggi TV e il risultato è qui sotto:

För omkring fyra-fem år sedan (minnet är inte det bästa, alltså) ritades i alla fall min hiphopkarta om totalt när Houston helt plötsligt blev staden som alla pratade om. Mike Jones, Slim Thug och Paul Wall slog igenom med monstret Still Tippin’ och fick alla tre varsitt storsäljande debutalbum (även om det bara är en av dem som egentligen kan rappa).
Houstons hiphopscen hade desförinnan nästan helt ignorerats av de stora skivbolagen, vilket gjorde att staden hade byggt upp en stark lokalpatriotisk independentscen där glidarna säljer sina cds direkt ur bakluckan, behåller vinsten själv och sedan skickar in profiten direkt i kedjan, smycket, eller bilen.
Den ultimata introduktionen till Houstons hiphopscen är Vice-dokumentären “Screwed up in Houston”, där Vices korrespondent (som ser ut som en FBI-agent) visas runt i staden och får prova allt som hör dess raplife till (inklusive dricka “Sizzurp”, kodeinhaltig hostmedicin blandad med läsk). Dokumentären kom för ett bra tag sedan men den är fortfarande rolig att kolla på, speciellt den sista delen när man får se hostmedicinen ta skruv.
