Limited edition poster available!

Renowned artist and graphic designer Shepard Fairey has created a portrait of Captain Paul Watson to support Sea Shepherd. Fairey is regarded as one of the most well known and most influential street artists today. His work is included in the collections at The Smithsonian, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. His work made headlines last year with the widely distributed Barack Obama “HOPE” poster during the presidential campaign.

Fairey became involved with Sea Shepherd Conservation Society this past summer by participating in an art benefit in Riverside, California called “Sea No Evil.” The event helped raise critical funds for Sea Shepherd’s direct action campaigns.

When asked why he supports Sea Shepherd, Fairey responded, “I am opposed to injustice in any form and I am an environmental advocate. The delicate balance of eco-systems needs to be maintained to protect all species, including humans. The mission of Sea Shepherd and founder Paul Watson to protect the oceans and their species is noble and inspiring. Any important movement requires a great leader to galvanize and motivate. Captain Watson is a leader who I wanted to celebrate with my art and hopefully have the art benefit the mission of Sea Shepherd.”

Limited edition prints are available online for purchase; a portion of the proceeds will benefit Sea Shepherd. The print comes in two different colorways: Light Blue and Dark Blue. Both are limited editions of 450, 18 x 24 inches, and are signed and numbered by Shepard and Captain Watson.

what is your name?
Paul Watson

how would you describe what you do?

Up until recently I worked primarily in collage and assemblage, but now I’m working with Artist’s Books – using the book as a sculptural form.

what are you currently working on?

The Book of the Erinyes is my current project – http://www.bookoftheerinyes.com/ – it’s a handbound limited edition (30 copies) artist’s book containing lino-prints, photographs (some digitally manipulated), and hand-set letterpress printing.

Essentially it’s a limited edition collection of pieces of artwork, bound together in the form of a book (itself a form of Book Art).

The text, which I’ve described elsewhere as “written in the style of a late 19th century description of pursuit by the Erinyes transcribed by an opium addict” presents an incomplete narrative giving tantalising insights into the artwork. All the text is printed with hand-set movable lead type (letterpress printing).

As well as the book itself, I’m going to be releasing a number of postcards of the artwork, and I have plans for a print-on-demand paperback version as well as a free ebook version.

what has had the greatest influence on your work?

Over the years I’ve been influenced by many artists – Francis Bacon, Robert Rauschenberg, Edvard Munch, Egon Schiele, Jasper Johns…

With regards to the Book of the Erinyes, the influences have been wide and varied – due in no small part to the variety of media being used. Artists like William Blake are a strong influence (although not so much with regards to his visual style – more his working methodologies).

Book Artists like Mia Leijonstedt (http://www.leijonstedt.com/) are a great influence and inspiration with regards to the actual binding and sculptural form of the books.

what is the greatest misconception about you or your work?

I’m not aware of any.

what do you see as the main strengths and weaknesses of the medium you work in?

With regards to Book Arts, the strengths are that the form of the book is so immediately recognisable to people that they feel an immediate connection with it. Books are full of mystery and wonders (or, at least, they should be, and they always are to children).

Weaknesses – well, the very familiarity of the book format means that sometimes people don’t realise that creating a handmade artist’s book can take hundreds of hours of work – which means they are frequently undervalued.

how has technology impacted upon the work you do?

Enormously. In my day job I’m the Web Manager for a Publishers, and prior to that I’ve worked as a web designer/developer for over 15 years. While my artwork mainly uses technologies that are many hundreds of years old (letterpress printing, bookbinding, relief printing) the marketing and promotion of the artwork mainly uses the internet.

In recent years I’ve increasingly eschewed more traditional ways of promoting and selling artwork (gallery exhibitions etc) and concentrated on my online presence.

I have started using a bit of digital manipulation of images in my artwork more recently, but it’s a minor element compared to the larger part of the artistic process.

The most interesting aspects of the internet are free access to global audiences and the ability to infinitely reproduce digital goods at effectively no cost. The second of those aspects is causing a lot of problems to old media companies who refuse to change their business models, but that’s because of their inertia and blindness. I see these aspects of the internet as massive opportunities.

what’s the greatest piece of advice you would like to pass on?

The best advice I can think of is: keep producing artwork, don’t stop, don’t delay, keep doing it.

where can we find you online?

My main site is the Lazarus Corporation – http://www.lazaruscorporation.co.uk/ – which has been online for the past 13 years. I’ve also opened a branch office on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/lazaruscorporation
The Book of the Erinyes has its own website at http://www.bookoftheerinyes.com/

And I’m on Twitter at http://twitter.com/lazcorp

what are you reading at the moment?

I’m currently reading City of Saints and Madmen by Jeff VanderMeer

what are you listening to at the moment?

I tend to listen to a lot of alternative music originating in the 80s and 90s – The Sisters of Mercy, Godflesh, Swans, Psychedelic Furs. But I’ve also been listening to a variety of newer music such as Godspeed You Black Emperor and the Dresden Dolls.

anything else we should know?

Over the last few years we have observed the conflict of conservation ships on the deep seas and the conducts towards interaction with international shipping and whaling.

Through this unpermitted war on international fishing and shipping via the Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace numerous attempts have been made in intercepting, trying to board or have boarded (attach to and unpermitted flag), interfering via misconduct and deliberately navigating towards and/or in the path of these international ships and their navigational lane ways.

Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warriors and Irwin’s Sea Shepherd conservation and research ships are non-government organization ships directly related the conversation of the environment. These ships legally do not have the right in interfere in international shipping and are not contracted via the Navy nor Customs of any country.

Conservation ships in the past have been fined for numerous violations including $7,000 USD for damaging the Tubbataha reef, conservation ships have been also known to interfere with the navigation and/or interference of single-hull oil tankers and cargo ships that may have been the cause of disasters in the past not contributed to the weather or human error.

Rather than submitting to organisations such as AMSA etc and dealing with these ships on land, these conversation companies have taken it on them self’s not only not observed sea safety but demonstrated acts of piracy according to United Nations Law of the Sea.

The definition of piracy on the sea means any illegal acts committed for private ends by the crew or passengers of a private ship or air craft on the high-seas against another ship or air craft against persons or property of that ship or aircraft.

Ships which are entitled to be seized on the account of piracy may be carried out only by military that can be identified as being on a government service and authorized to that effect. The right to pursuit may be exercised only by ships identifiable as being a government service and authorized to that effect.

Japan started whaling via netting in the early 12th century (1101-1200) in which in this time dragged these whales onto land, they progressed in 1510 to the use of open boats; Norway started in the middle ages. Europeans settled in Australia in 1788 prior to this aboriginals hunted whales off the shores via netting as in the way Japan and Asian countries did all those centuries ago.

The current population of Japan is 128 million & Norway is 4.8 million rounded, whale catches each year according to this populous ratio indicate over the last 10 years would suggest that Norway is catching an estimated of 135 more on average per year then Japan and that Japan is catching under their permitted amount by around 200+ working off IWC.

Yet knowing these facts Senator Siewert from the Australian Greens has stated that Japan are estimated to catch 1000+ this year when for the last 20 years they have not taken any more the under their permitted seasonal catch.

Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd has quoted in saying “our intention is to bankrupt the fleet like we have been doing for the past three years, our intension is to block loading operations” “collisions may happen!” In stating such facts Mr Watson is stating that his ship and crew have every intention in not only to intrude on permitted operations of an international industry but also to endanger his own crew and the crews of the ships involved, also in these quotes direct to media confessed to the intention of espionage of an international corporate industry in-past and present.

Such conservation companies pursuing such courses of action directed purely at Japan is a clear indication of bulling via the use of underhandedness and disorientation to draw vessels into conservation areas only to singling out an individual country for the purpose of defamation of an industry.

In relation to whaling and the reproduction of each, the Humpback Whale produces 6-8 young per year after the age of 10 it is estimated that there are 10,000-15,000 worldwide, a Minke Whale gives birth to 1 per year after the age of 2 it is estimated that there are 800.000 worldwide and Sperm Whale produce 7-10 per year after 10 years of age it is estimated that there are 200,000 worldwide.

The average hunted is 2 Sperm, 535 Minke and very little of anything else per average year by Japan for the last 20 years where in comparison Norway just for Minke alone was almost 500-600 est. per year for the last 10 years.

Regards

We should all want to be wise and careful stewards of the beautiful planet we call home. But most of us realise that humans in general are not being good stewards. We are wasteful with our natural resources and have reduced biodiversity. Therefore, when we read about groups and organisations calling for a ‘green revolution’ and a new relationship between humanity and nature it is easy to agree with their ideas.

However, certain aspects of the modern green movement that is permeating every segment of our society are not about protecting the environment. You don’t have to dig very deep to discover the true beliefs of the influential leaders who are using genuine concerns about the environment to promote an agenda of fear and control. Please carefully consider the implications of the opinions that they so openly and freely express:

November 24, 2009

If you own any shares in alternative energy companies I should start dumping them NOW. The conspiracy behind the Anthropogenic Global Warming myth (aka AGW; aka ManBearPig) has been suddenly, brutally and quite deliciously exposed after a hacker broke into the computers at the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit (aka Hadley CRU) and released 61 megabites of confidential files onto the internet. (Hat tip: Watts Up With That)

When you read some of those files – including 1079 emails and 72 documents – you realise just why the boffins at Hadley CRU might have preferred to keep them confidential. As Andrew Bolt puts it, this scandal could well be “the greatest in modern science”. These alleged emails – supposedly exchanged by some of the most prominent scientists pushing AGW theory – suggest:

Conspiracy, collusion in exaggerating warming data, possibly illegal destruction of embarrassing information, organised resistance to disclosure, manipulation of data, private admissions of flaws in their public claims and much more.

One of the alleged emails has a gentle gloat over the death in 2004 of John L Daly (one of the first climate change sceptics, founder of the Still Waiting For Greenhouse site), commenting:

“In an odd way this is cheering news.”

But perhaps the most damaging revelations – the scientific equivalent of the Telegraph’s MPs’ expenses scandal – are those concerning the way Warmist scientists may variously have manipulated or suppressed evidence in order to support their cause.

Here are a few tasters. (So far, we can only refer to them as alleged emails because – though Hadley CRU’s director Phil Jones has confirmed the break-in to Ian Wishart at the Briefing Room – he has yet to fess up to any specific contents.) But if genuine, they suggest dubious practices such as:

Manipulation of evidence:

I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. -Phil Jones

Private doubts about whether the world really is heating up:

The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t. The CERES data published in the August BAMS 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong. Our observing system is inadequate. -Kevin Trenberth

Suppression of evidence:

Can you delete any emails you may have had with Keith re AR4?

Keith will do likewise. He’s not in at the moment – minor family crisis.

Can you also email Gene and get him to do the same? I don’t have his new email address.

We will be getting Caspar to do likewise.

Fantasies of violence against prominent Climate Sceptic scientists:

Next time I see Pat Michaels at a scientific meeting, I’ll be tempted to beat the crap out of him. Very tempted. -Ben Santer

Attempts to disguise the inconvenient truth of the Medieval Warm Period (MWP):

……Phil and I have recently submitted a paper using about a dozen NH records that fit this category, and many of which are available nearly 2K back–I think that trying to adopt a timeframe of 2K, rather than the usual 1K, addresses a good earlier point that Peck made w/ regard to the memo, that it would be nice to try to “contain” the putative “MWP”, even if we don’t yet have a hemispheric mean reconstruction available that far back….” -Michael E. Mann

And, perhaps most reprehensibly, a long series of communications discussing how best to squeeze dissenting scientists out of the peer review process. How, in other words, to create a scientific climate in which anyone who disagrees with AGW can be written off as a crank, whose views do not have a scrap of authority..:

“This was the danger of always criticising the skeptics for not publishing in the “peer-reviewed literature”. Obviously, they found a solution to that–take over a journal! So what do we do about this? I think we have to stop considering “Climate Research” as a legitimate peer-reviewed journal. Perhaps we should encourage our colleagues in the climate research community to no longer submit to, or cite papers in, this journal. We would also need to consider what we tell or request of our more reasonable colleagues who currently sit on the editorial board…What do others think?” -Michael E. Mann

“ I will be emailing the journal to tell them I’m having nothing more to do with it until they rid themselves of this troublesome editor.” -Phil Jones

“It results from this journal having a number of editors. The responsible one for this is a well-known skeptic in NZ. He has let a few papers through by Michaels and Gray in the past. I’ve had words with Hans von Storch about this, but got nowhere. Another thing to discuss in Nice !” -Phil Jones

Hadley CRU has form in this regard. In September – I wrote the story up here as “How the global warming industry is based on a massive lie” – Hadley CRU’s researchers were exposed as having “cherry-picked” data in order to support their untrue claim that global temperatures had risen higher at the end of the 20th century than at any time in the last millenium. Hadley CRU was also the organisation which – in contravention of all acceptable behaviour in the international scientific community – spent years withholding data from researchers it deemed unhelpful to its cause. This matters because Hadley CRU, established in 1990 by the Met Office, is a government-funded body which is supposed to be a model of rectitude. Its HadCrut record is one of the four official sources of global temperature data used by the IPCC.

I asked in my title whether this will be the final nail in the coffin of Anthropenic Global Warming. This was wishful thinking, of course. In the run up to Copenhagen, we will see more and more hysterical (and grotesquely exaggerated) stories such as this in the Mainstream Media. And we will see ever-more-virulent campaigns conducted by eco-fascist activists, such as this risible new advertising campaign by Plane Stupid showing CGI polar bears falling from the sky and exploding because kind of, like, man, that’s sort of what happens whenever you take another trip on an aeroplane.

The world is currently cooling; electorates are increasingly reluctant to support eco-policies leading to more oppressive regulation, higher taxes and higher utility bills; the tide is turning against Al Gore’s Anthropogenic Global Warming theory. The so-called “sceptical” view is now also the majority view.

Unfortunately, we’ve a long, long way to go before the public mood (and scientific truth) is reflected by our policy makers. There are too many vested interests in AGW, with far too much to lose either in terms of reputation or money, for this to end without a bitter fight.

But if the Hadley CRU scandal is true,it’s a blow to the AGW lobby’s credibility which is never likely to recover.

“We need to get some broad based support, to capture the public’s imagination… So we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements and make little mention of any doubts… Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest.” – Stephen Schneider, Stanford Professor of Climatology, lead author of many IPCC reports

“Unless we announce disasters no one will listen.” – Sir John Houghton, first chairman of IPCC

“It doesn’t matter what is true, it only matters what people believe is true.” – Paul Watson, co-founder of Greenpeace

“We’ve got to ride this global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing in terms of economic and environmental policy.” – Timothy Wirth, President of the UN Foundation

“No matter if the science of global warming is all phony… climate change provides the greatest opportunity to bring about justice and equality in the world.” – Christine Stewart, fmr Canadian Minister of the Environment

“The only way to get our society to truly change is to frighten people with the possibility of a catastrophe.” – emeritus professor Daniel Botkin

“We require a central organizing principle – one agreed to voluntarily. Minor shifts in policy, moderate improvement in laws and regulations, rhetoric offered in lieu of genuine change – these are all forms of appeasement, designed to satisfy the public’s desire to believe that sacrifice, struggle and a wrenching transformation of society will not be necessary.” – Al Gore, Earth in the Balance

“Isn’t the only hope for the planet that the industrialized civilizations collapse? Isn’t it our responsiblity to bring that about?” – Maurice Strong, founder of the UN Environment Programme

“A massive campaign must be launched to de-develop the United States. De-development means bringing our economic system into line with the realities of ecology and the world resource situation.” – Paul Ehrlich, Professor of Population Studies

“The only hope for the world is to make sure there is not another United States. We can’t let other countries have the same number of cars, the amount of industrialization, we have in the US. We have to stop these Third World countries right where they are.” – Maurice Strong, Environmental Defense Fund

“Global Sustainability requires the deliberate quest of poverty, reduced resource consumption and set levels of mortality control.” – Professor Maurice King

“Current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class – involving high meat intake, use of fossil fuels, appliances, air-conditioning, and suburban housing – are not sustainable.” – Maurice Strong, Rio Earth Summit

“Complex technology of any sort is an assault on human dignity. It would be little short of disastrous for us to discover a source of clean, cheap, abundant energy, because of what we might do with it.” – Amory Lovins, Rocky Mountain Institute

“The prospect of cheap fusion energy is the worst thing that could happen to the planet.” – Jeremy Rifkin, Greenhouse Crisis Foundation

“Giving society cheap, abundant energy would be the equivalent of giving an idiot child a machine gun.” – Prof Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University

“The big threat to the planet is people: there are too many, doing too well economically and burning too much oil.” -Sir James Lovelock, BBC Interview

“My three main goals would be to reduce human population to about 100 million worldwide, destroy the industrial infrastructure and see wilderness, with it’s full complement of species, returning throughout the world.” -Dave Foreman, co-founder of Earth First!

“A total population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal.” – Ted Turner, founder of CNN and major UN donor

“… the resultant ideal sustainable population is hence more than 500 million but less than one billion.” – Club of Rome, Goals for Mankind

“If I were reincarnated I would wish to be returned to earth as a killer virus to lower human population levels.” – Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, patron of the World Wildlife Fund

“I suspect that eradicating small pox was wrong. It played an important part in balancing ecosystems.” – John Davis, editor of Earth First! Journal

“The extinction of the human species may not only be inevitable but a good thing.” – Christopher Manes, Earth First!

“Childbearing should be a punishable crime against society, unless the parents hold a government license. All potential parents should be required to use contraceptive chemicals, the government issuing antidotes to citizens chosen for childbearing.” – David Brower, first Executive Director of the Sierra Club

A few weeks ago I was catching up on my DVR’d tv shows and I came across the Southpark episode “Whale Whores.” It was their spoof on the tv show Whale Wars which airs on Animal Planet and chronicles a group of people who harass Japanese whaling in the Ross Sea. It’s kind of an interesting show.. So i’m watching this episode of Southpark and up pops a picture of Whale Wars Capt. Paul Watson that looked very similar to a picture I made of him a few weeks before the episode aired. I paused the show and busted out my laptop and what do you know, the picture used on Southpark was mine. I don’t really get excited anymore when I see one of my pictures in print but this was a whole different story. Southpark has long been one of my favorite tv shows and to see one of my pictures get the Southpark treatment was awesome. In fact i’m still riding the high from seeing my work on that show.

Paul Joseph Watson Prison Planet.com Friday, November 6, 2009 The Empire strikes back – right when w

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet.com
Friday, November 6, 2009

The Empire strikes back – right when when public support for the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan sinks to all time lows, an anti-war Islamic extremist with links to suicide bombers goes on a shooting rampage at a U.S. army base, reinvigorating support for the war on terror and demonizing opposition to it as anti-American extremism. The scam would be believable if it wasn’t so perfectly staged.
Without getting into convoluted conspiracy theories about mind control and whatever else, not that they aren’t without merit, the facts we already know about Hasan and his behavior prior to the deadly shootings just screams out “patsy” and “set-up” and almost exactly mirrors other terror scams the Empire has run in the past.
Just like the would-be liquid bombers that were supposedly planning on bringing down multiple airliners in August 2006, who were caught on CCTV buying bulk supplies of cake in the very hours before the plot, Hasan’s pre-shooting behavior contradicts completely the idea that he was preparing for a deadly rampage.
Shortly before the massacre, Hasan was caught on camera shopping at the convenience store located on the army base – laughing and joking. Is this the behavior of a man psychologically readying himself for the high-intensity horror of gunning down dozens of his colleagues, or someone unaware of what was to follow?
We learn that Hasan “Showed no signs of worry or stress when he stopped at 7-Eleven for his daily breakfast of hash browns, said Jeannie Strickland, the store’s manager.” ” He came in (Thursday) morning just like normal,” she said, “nothing weird, nothing out of the ordinary.”
CNN feverishly seized upon the CCTV footage and began broadcasting it relentlessly because Hasan is seen wearing Arab garb and Muslim headdress, fitting the carefully pre-arranged stereotype perfectly.

The Smiling Assassin? Hasan’s pre-rampage behavior is completely at odds with the idea of him preparing to massacre more than a dozen of his colleagues.
Just like the 7/7 bombing patsies who were filmed laughing and joking, getting into arguments and generally doing everything a terrorist would want to avoid, Hasan’s pre-attack behavior should set alarm bells ringing.
Just like the 7/7 bombing patsies and the liquid bombing patsies, the description of Hasan by those reinforcing the official characterization of him as a vengeful jihadist is completely at odds with how his own family members described him.
Hasan’s cousin laughed when an interviewer asked him if the shooter was “violent.”
A D V E R T I S E M E N T

“He was just normal, loved sports, never got into trouble.” He said his family was “shocked and baffled” by the incident.
“His parents didn’t want him to go into the military,” Mr. Hasan said. “He said, ‘No, I was born and raised here, I’m going to do my duty to the country.’ ”
The backdrop behind Hasan’s alleged motive for the rampage also represents an inch-perfect staging for subsequent characterization of those opposed to the war on terror as lunatics, crackpots and extremists.
In the hours after the event, we were told that Hasan was upset about being deployed to Iraq at the end of the month. This then mutated into the notion that Hasan was “anti-war” and later we were informed that he was “facing an FBI investigation for expressing sympathy with suicide bombers.” The fact that this was known by authorities six months ago and still Hasan was not only allowed to remain at the Army base, but also invited to participate in Homeland Security exercises only raises more red flags.
Then the lurid details really began to pour in to reinforce the Islamic terrorist stereotype – Hasan screamed “Allah Akbar!” before opening fire, he made “outlandish comments concerning U.S. foreign policy.”
As Michael Yaki highlights, the media characterization of Hasan as a Muslim terrorist was assumed by default, and almost from the first moment it seemed as though news anchors were reading from a script prepared well in advance.
“Once the name of the protagonist was established, the blogs lit up and the talking heads immediately turned to the “terrorist” word. Anderson Cooper repeatedly referred to Hasan as an “American Muslim.” I somehow don’t see Cooper referring to the Columbine killers, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris as “American Protestants.” Yet, front and center, the media began their speculation on whether Hasan was a “recent convert” to Islam, what websites he visited, and whether “outside influences” — code words for Imams and terrorist recruiters — had compelled him to walk onto the base and begin his shooting rampage. Indeed, the media was playing {and replaying} up the fact that he was shown wearing “traditional” Arab garb earlier in the day as he bought some coffee, although other footage from the day before showed him wearing hospital scrubs — which thus far has never made the endless loop on CNN.”
Pointing out the fact that every other killer in U.S. history was described as a “mass murderer” and not a terrorist, Yaki slams the media’s contrived and “implied presumption (that) Hasan appears to be terrorist unless proven otherwise.”
Why were initial reports of three shooters reversed? Why were two alleged shooters taken into custody but quickly released? Was Hasan framed?
When the dust settles on yesterday’s tragic events at Fort Hood it may indeed turn out to be the case that Nidal Malik Hasan was a lone nut seeking to exact revenge for what he saw as perpetual war crimes being carried out against the people of Iraq and Afghanistan. If that is the case, it doesn’t make such crimes acceptable nor does it mean all people who oppose the war on terror are likely to go on a shooting rampage.
However, from all the evidence that has emerged thus far, and in comparing it with other terror scams in the past where patsies have been deliberately groomed and set up to be the fall guys for false flag attacks, everything we know about yesterday’s events suggests that there is infinitely more to the story of Nidal Malik Hasan than meets the eye.

Police in Britain have defined political activism as “domestic extremism” and are treating people who attend demonstrations as criminals, cataloguing them on multiple national databases as well as tracking their vehicle license plates to enable them to be targeted for stop and search harassment.

People of any political persuasion protesting any cause whatsoever, right or left-wing, are having their details stored on a network of nationwide intelligence databases overseen by three national police units exclusively devoted to spying on those who are even mildly politically active in Britain.

“The hidden apparatus has been constructed to monitor “domestic extremists”, reports the London Guardian. “Detailed information about the political activities of campaigners is being stored on a number of overlapping IT systems, even if they have not committed a crime.”

The police units in control of the system are headed up by the “terrorism and allied matters” committee of the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo), illustrating once again that the British government equates peaceful protest with domestic terrorism.

“Vehicles associated with protesters are being tracked via a nationwide system of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras,” reports the Guardian. “One man, who has no criminal record, was stopped more than 25 times in less than three years after a “protest” marker was placed against his car after he attended a small protest against duck and pheasant shooting. ANPR “interceptor teams” are being deployed on roads leading to protests to monitor attendance.”

The system, funded to the tune of £9 billion by the taxpayer, also employs spies to infiltrate and inform on protest groups.

The following Orwellian statement is the the government’s response to criticism that the databases contain vast numbers of people who have no criminal record.

“Just because you have no criminal record does not mean that you are not of interest to the police,” said Anton Setchell, national co-ordinator for domestic extremism for the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo). “Everyone who has got a criminal record did not have one once.”

In other words, everyone who attends a protest, criminal record or not, is on the database and is regarded as a “domestic extremist” by the government.

Superintendent Steve Pearl, the front man for one of the units within Acpo tasked with surveilling protesters told the Guardian that the system was set up after intense pressure from big business, particularly pharmaceutical giants, as well as banks, who demanded that demonstrators be targeted after a minority of animal rights activists engaged in criminal acts.

As another Guardian report on the story explains, just like their counterparts across the pond, British authorities have rebranded lawful protests as “domestic extremism” and now treat any attempt to further a campaign, change legislation or domestic policy as probable cause for criminal surveillance.

Police are provided with mug shots of protesters, known as “spotter cards,” (see above) enabling them to identify key members of protest groups, despite the fact that these individuals have no criminal records.

As comedian Mark Thomas discusses today in his Guardian piece, despite the fact that he was merely attending an arms fair for the purpose of researching for a book, his mug shot is featured on the “police spotter card,” while companies inside the fair who were openly selling illegal torture devices were completely ignored by the government and the police.

“The very phrase “domestic extremist” defines protesters in the eyes of the police as the problem, the enemy. Spying on entire groups and organisations, and targeting the innocent, undermines not only our rights but the law – frightfully silly of me to drag this into an argument about policing, I know,” writes Thomas.

“Protest is part of the democratic process. It wasn’t the goodwill of politicians that led them to cancel developing countries’ debt, but the protests and campaigning of millions of ordinary people around the world. The political leaders were merely the rubber stamp in the democratic process. Thus any targeting and treatment of demonstrators (at the G20 for example) that creates a “chilling effect” – deterring those who may wish to exercise their right to protest – is profoundly undemocratic.”

This is what spying on and treating protesters as extremists and criminals is all about. The government has created a chilling atmosphere where people are scared to exercise their rights because of the fear they will be targeted by the authorities. This is an end run around freedom as it is just as good as outlawing protest altogether. This is how tyranny throughout history always begins – first the state demonizes protesters as extremists and discourages anyone from joining their ranks through fear and intimidation. Once the number of dissidents has been reduced to a tiny minority, the authorities then have free reign to stamp the boot down and eliminate free speech altogether.

The only way to counter this is to shake off the psychological shackles of intimidation, get past our fear and be more vocal than ever in exercising free speech and our right to protest – because the alternative and what it may entail is nightmarish to even consider. If you care about living in anything like a free society with any modicum of free speech whatsoever, then the message is simple – use it or lose it.

Hieronder leest u waarom.

Bedreigd?

De walvis is bedreigd. Welke walvis?
