We went on a trip to Paul Wright’s studio in Leicester to attend a life drawing class. Being a photographer who isn’t any good at drawing anything let alone people, I did not feel like this class would benefit me. Sure we could watch the bodies movement and study it, but I can do that everyday as I have my own body and I see other people walking around. but they are wearing clothes. He did eventually try to bring photography into the class, by telling us to create the frame where the figure will be, but I would have prefered a class on lighting of a body or something different. I am sure there are people who enjoyed the class, I did enjoy being able to use charcoal and really draw how I wanted to. But I just don’t like looking at or drawing a naked person that I don’t know, as I believe your naked body is something to cherish and only show to the one you love. But I still think this class was worth while and in context with the picbod course.

As part of my this current module at university, “Picturing the body”, we are learning new ways to look at the body. so last week we went to artist Paul Wright’s studio is Leicester to do some life drawing. At first I thought I can’t draw and it is something I would normally do, however once we learnt how to look at the body in a different way when drawing it made sense weather you could draw or not.

We learnt to look at the body put not the paper when we were drawing, so we would literally draw what we saw without stopping and looking and our drawings. Sometimes these images were better than the ones we took more time on! Overall I felt I learnt a lot more about the body and looking at it in more detail led me to ideas for photographing the body.

Warning: the following images may scare younger children or to those that have not been exposed to gingers in their life time.

There are people in this world who vary from others, some by appearance, some by style, and of course some by their souls or lack there of. As we all know gingers, based off of proven scientific evidence (refer to south park), don’t have souls. Now this interesting crowd goer may have turned this known fact back into theory…or did he? When I first watched the video I thought someone definitely dubbed it over due to everyone’s knowledge that Gingers, especially with curly hair, are hilarious in this day and age (Actually, I’m pretty sure the hilarity of a goofy looking ginger like this kid, dates back to the 1600′s). So I dug a bit into YouTube and was able to track down the original whole performance where, of course, at minute 1:12 out of no where comes the Paul Wright version of a ginger (Paul Wright aka the big show or the giant). (view below for comparison). Now the first thing that went through my mind when breaking down this gene defect was obviously his ridiculously red hair and then I came across another revelation. A ginger, who supposedly was to have no soul was “gettin’ sick wit it” at an Eminem concert. After watching the video numerous times and calming myself down from continuous laughter I reevaluated the specimen again and realized that this was not a man enjoying himself at a concert. This was a soulless being trying to use some sort of stare tactic in what I think was an attempt to suck the soul out of any man or woman to look into his eyes. So, there are a few statement/questions/opinions that I will make in conclusion after watching this video. One, the finding of scientists that gingers do not have souls remains true. Two, gingers mayyy actually be trying to find a way to take the souls of others to end this stereotype. And three, Does anyone think that there Ginger bars where only gingers go to hang out? And possibly where they all dance like this? (In the words of Demetri Martin “….think about it.”)

A day of life drawing with Paul Wright`s teaching us. The idea was not to improve drawing skills but to look and to observe the bodies tone and composing with out a camera.

First we simply had a go at drawing a pose in pencil and then charcoal. He then asked us to draw without looking at the paper with I found interesting because it made me observe the body and look for lines, shapes and tones. We did many tasks such as drawing whilst keeping the pencil stuck on the page, drawing in one stroke, drawing shadows tones and highlights, drawing weight as the model stands, drawing with our back to the subject. At the end we made a final piece, learning all the techniques we just used.

The workshop was interesting because I had never done life drawing and wanted to experience it. I understood through the workshop that drawing and taking stills are the same thing, in both your observing and looking at the detail to create an image through what you see. A good and an exciting day.

When I was at college just over two years ago it was compulsory to do art one day a week. Many students objected at the time as it never involved picking up a camera. Although this consisted of drawing, painting and making collages etc..it was beneficial to photography. It did make me look at things in a different way. In fact I rather enjoyed it as it was a break from the norm.

Well today saw me and the rest of the ‘picturing the body’ group travelling to Leicester to do life drawing under the instruction of artist Paul Wright. Yes its pretty much self explanatory. Drawing a real model. Once the easel was set up it was a case of completing different tasks which were opening up our visual awareness. This ranged from looking at composition and tone to looking and shape and form. Now I’m the first to admit that I am no artist. I do believe that I have an artistic eye (on the odd occasion) but when it comes to putting pencil to paper I’m not going to pretend that I am anything special. However, Paul assured us that this was not about that. There was not a right or wrong way of doing this. This was about us realising how we look at things. After completing the various tasks I did feel that I had learnt a lot about the way in which I view subjects. Something which I will no doubt continue to use and incorporate into my practice.

So today was a really beneficial day in many ways. When looking at things to shoot my ideas can become stagnant. This has opened my mind up to be more creative. To pre visualise more before I compose the image.

Anyway, must go as the phones ringing….It could be that bloke Saatchi

What a day today! After 5 hours making one of my university tasks last night this morning was quite

What a day today!

After 5 hours making one of my university tasks last night this morning was quite weird. I kicked myself out of the bed, took black, hot and strong coffee and went to uni. I was little late but did not matter.
However, we had a great talk and workshop with one absolutely interesting and wonderful artist – Paul Wright (http://www.paul-wright.com/).

Since the very first 2 minutes after starting his talk, he became my favourite paiter! It’s true that I do not know many painters, but it is also true his work struck me right in the heart! I’m absolutely, perfectly impressed! I really adore and admire him! Great artist, Great! I’m in love with his pieces, the way he represent his emotions and feelings and the way they look – breathtaking!

I’ve never been interested and impressed so badly from paintings. Do not take me wrong – I respect people’s work, but sometimes is just that. Sometimes not. And in this particular case (with Paul Wright) is one of those which grab me right away! My soul just give up to his work and he gently made it passionate fan!

I also had an apportunity to be reviewed by him and hear what he thinks about my work. This was the best day at the university so far! I’m really glad and thankful and I’m feeling very lucky as well. Envy me, yeah, that’s right! This is the best you could do!

And if I could paint I would want to paint like him!

‘Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work and the belief that things will grow out of the activity itself and that you will, through work, bump into other possibilities and kick open other doors that you would never dream up if you were just sitting around looking for a great art idea. And that a belief in that the process, in a sense, is liberating and that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel everyday. Today you know what you will do, you could be doing what you were doing yesterday and tomorrow you are going to do what you did today and at least for a certain period of time if you can just work to hang in there, you will get somewhere.’

P.P.S. The date of this post is not correct. We had our meeting with Paul Wright at Thursday (28/10/2010) and I published my thoughts firstly at my personal blog http://mimchs.blogspot.com/ . Then forgot to post it here. Anyway, I’m still obsessed of Paul Wright’s work! Respect!!!

Free stuff rocks! That is exactly the reaction that Paul Wright and his band Rootdown were hoping to

Free stuff rocks!

That is exactly the reaction that Paul Wright and his band Rootdown were hoping to get when they decided to give out their first album out for free via digital download on their website in 2007. It is a strategy that has been popularized by bands like Radiohead and Coldplay, but the difference is Rootdown is an independent band that could barely afford to make the album they were giving away for free.

The thousands of dollars in cost of giving away those albums has proven to be a positive for Wright and the band, which is benefiting three years later, by selling out shows throughout the West Coast and is launching their first headlining tour across Northwest college campuses this Spring.

In an industry that has recently been slowed by piracy and lower sales, down 30% since 2004, Rootdown is seeing success by staying local and independent.

Wright has been in the industry as a signed solo artist for the better half of a decade. His songs are still being played throughout the Christian radio market. Signed in 2001 to Gotee Records, Wright’s has used his time as a solo-artist to develop perspective that works for him now as the lead for an independent band.

“Being independent allows you to control your music. You can produce what you want and how you want it to connect with your fans. Really much of the money to be made is in doing live shows, so if you can get people to those shows that is how you make money,” says Wright.

Giving away that first EP album gave the band a mailing list that of 15,000 people, a solid fan base for a band that is just starting. Throughout the past few years they have also been able to get radio airplay and spread their music throughout the web — something that they have managed tightly.

Web and music technology has changed the face of the music industry as a whole. Social Networking and Music Discovery services allow artists to have their music played in the same playlist as their biggest influences, for Rootdown and Wright these means being in the same playlist as Bob Marley and Sublime.

Wright checks his personal and the bandsTwitter and Facebook accounts constantly with his iPhone. “Being connected makes you so much more likeable,” says Wright. He believes that it is much more likely a fan will come to a show if a friend has invited them.

Those relationships mean a lot in an industry that has seen its fair share of big stars that seem almost untouchable. The Internet has been a big reason these guys are able to make music. Without it Wright might be working at instead of writing about his favorite burrito joint, “Burrito Boy.”

Have you ever heard a song play on your radio, ipod, record player, etc. that was just what you want

Have you ever heard a song play on your radio, ipod, record player, etc. that was just what you wanted or needed to hear? Its a magic moment, when synchronicity shows her face and you know once again you are not insignificant but part of a bigger picture or story that matters. I had that magic moment today…my iPhone “creative” playlist was going and the song “Heaven” by Paul Wright came on. My attention was drawn to the most memorable line of the song “we don’t need long hair forever, no, no…” Now, I’d been thinking the last couple days that it was time for a haircut – hence the magic moment when I heard my favorite line. Yes! It is time for a haircut, and I’ll even do it myself I’m so inspired (no joke, LOL)!

And yet, before I could get out the scissors, my latent curiosity took over and I decided it would be a good idea to look up the lyrics to this song. I mean, I’d made up a story in my head on why this line could be in a song about heaven but I wanted to see all the lyrics to get the real picture. So to google I went.

Lo and behold! There wasn’t anything about long hair, short hair, or any kind of hair in the lyrics of this song! Instead I read “we don’t belong here forever, no, no…” Huh. I listened to the song again and there it was, I could finally hear the original intent of the song and could also see how I had misconstrued the words because of how they were sung.

Now what? My incorrect view of the song had created an alternate universe for a wonderfully magic moment. For me, that still exists and I am going to cut my hair. And, at the same time I now see and hear the original intent of the song and now hold a new meaning for what this song is about. I’ve read the lyrics and have a new appreciation for the song writer. I also have spent some time thinking about heaven and what I think it will be like, what I hope it will be like. This, then has provided some more magic moments for me.

I’m reminded of how I, and I dare say others, have made meaning out of what we have seen and heard in our lives that has served us very well. These ways of seeing or interpreting life can be called mental models:

“Mental models are deeply ingrained assumptions, generalizations, or even pictures or images that influence how we understand the world and how we take action.” The Fifth Discipline, The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization, Senge, (Doubleday: 1990) (from http://www.pimaregionalsupport.org/systems/glossary.htm)

These mental models can also be skewed or incorrect as illustrated by my own story. My hair example is a “light” version of some of the mental models I have had. Some more deeply ingrained ones have been much more challenging to not only define but to examine and/or change. I’ll save these for some later posts.

For now, I hope you enjoyed the story and you’ve had a chance to think about a few of your own ways of seeing the world that have provided humor and laughter in your life. This story today had me cracking up enough to inspire me to write this blog post.

For you curious types here are the lyrics for Paul Wright’s song “Heaven”:

Heaven
Right around the corner
I want to know what it’s like to be in heaven
Looking back on my life having answers to my questions
Cuz we don’t belong here forever
No no we don’t belong here
And we’ll be dancing, singing, bringing our praise
By lifting our voices to Jesus
There’ll be no more crying, lying or dying when you and I are in heaven
I want to know what it’s like to live forever
Embraced by the light of knowing you better Lord
Cuz we don’t belong here forever no no we don’t belong here
We we we gonna be dancing, singing,
Lifting our voices to Jesus
Take me home
I want to go home
I want to be in heaven just singing and dancing and praising and living forever

I’ve been listening to this guy nonstop for a good amount of time now, and I do believe he and his current band deserve some major props. They are fantastic. First, let me tell you how I discovered Paul Wright. It’s simple, really. I used to watch the “Top Ten (or is it 20?) Countdown” on TVU back in high school circa 2002 …ish. His first video to the song, “Your Love Never Changes” premiered at about this time. My fam digged the vid and my madre bought the album. My sister and I wound up really liked his stuff. We got even more hooked when his second record, “Sunrise to Sunset” released. His beats/jams/vocals are tastefully captivating and his lyrics set the mind to crashing waves and gorgeous sunsets, the ups and downs of relationships, and always faith in the Creator, among other various notions. Reggae/hip-hop/acoustic/worshipful. Paul Wright

Since those early years, Wright has come out with some more incredible albums. He is also part of an indie reggae group, ROOTDOWN. They are revolutionary, really. How can one go wrong when singing about burritos and utilizing a trumpet/sax? They are a bit more deep than that. I could go on, but I am certainly not a musician or a reporter. Check these guys out yourself, enjoy the tunes, and support ‘em. Rootdown

You have no excuse now. You know who they are. They are fantastic.

Paul Wright’s very first album, Fly Away remains in the dash cd holder in my Jeep. We might be fifty, but my sister Lindsay and I consider it a life goal to see Paul Wright and ROOTDOWN perform live. Till then, we’ll keep up our quota as the Delaware goonies.

So this last Friday we had Paul Wright and Rootdown play at our church for a very intimate concert. They were full of energy and they did a great job of making the students and families at the concert feel special. You would have never know how many people were in the building. Which I did as I watched ticket sales. But they were there to share the love of Christ with the people that were there and they made the night awesome. Why? How can I say that?

First as a Dad my kids love Paul and the guys they can not wait to hang around them. These guys make the people around them so comfortable and they are FUN. They don’t take themselves and what they do so serious that they can’t enjoy the people around them. That is something that I have to say I love about these guys.

Second as a Pastor to Students the kids of our church want to have these guys around. This last concert was a younger crowd and I have to say that it worked out great because the came back to church on Sunday with a new excitement for being a part of the student ministry. They saw that you can have fun in a worship sense and they were acting that way Sunday. Thanks to the guys for leading our students in this way.

Finally as a friend I am so encouraged to know that these guys are out their touring and sharing their gifts and talents. I am so proud of the men that they are and the way that they are serving Jesus in what they do. I pray that that everyone who gets to hear these guys or just hang out with these guys are able to to catch a glimpse of what it means to serve Jesus with all that you are and who you are. Thanks guys for a great night.

The Musicians’ Table is the fifth title in ABC Classics series The Perfection of Music – Masterpieces of the French Baroque, featuring the work of Ensemble Battistin. The disc contains some little known pieces composed between 1695 and 1739. This was a period in which Parisian composers sought to fuse the graceful French styles, which owed much to courtly dance, with less restrictive, more technically demanding Italian styles. As François Couperin put it “The bringing together of French and Italian styles must create the perfection of music”.

Philidor’s Suite for flute, violin and continuo was not published until 1717, two years after the death of Louis XIV, but it typifies the kind of formal music he loved. It is easy to imagine these sprightly dances being performed in the glittering surroundings of Versailles.

Apparently Boismortier was not only a prolific composer and talented flautist but was also a keen cellist. Suzanne Wijsman and Noeleen Wright breathe life into his Sonata in D for cello and cello continuo. The acoustic of the chapel proves a sympathetic environment for the excitement of their playing, especially in the dramatic second movement and the spiky third.

One of the most influential composers of the period, Louis-Gabriel Guillemain, is represented here by his Sonata in A Minor for two violins. The virtuosic interplay the piece demands, together with a strong sense of inner momentum illustrate the move towards a more Italianate style.

The transverse flute and violin return in Rebel’s Sonata in F Major, which has a reflective opening movement, demonstrating that the emotional power of the flute is no less intense than that of the violin. A second composition by Boismortier rounds of the CD. His Trio Sonata in D major elicits some of the most exquisite playing on the album. This piece, like the earlier one, displays Boismortier’s fondness for the cello. He takes the instrument out of the shadows of continuo work and places it centre stage with the violin.

The Musician’s Table is an impressive CD. I’m looking forward to hearing the other discs in the series.

The Belfast City Marathon Relay has become one of the most prestigious RP sporting events alongside the EP Volleyball Competition, the Ballyclabber football tournament and competitive sports day at Senior Camp. Dromore RPC are the current holders of the fastest RP’s in Ireland title although team captain Rev. David McCullough is talking down the chances of a repeat performance this year. The team has been rocked by a sprained ankle and two cases of shin splints leaving them unlikely to match last year’s heroic time of 3hrs 21min.

Stephen Steele has joined fellow Faughan runners Andy Morrison (Renwick FC Young Player of the Year 2009) and Super Pete Fallows whilst drafting in Cromie Robert and Paul Wright to complete the team. PJ’s Heroes will be keen to recover from last year’s disappointing 3rd RP team finish and should pose a strong challenge but the clear favourites to triumph on Monday are Carrick who have made big name signings including Strobert and Alan Blackwell.

The federal Bureau of Prisons was ordered by a U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., on Thursday

The federal Bureau of Prisons was ordered by a U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., on Thursday to either look again for records requested by a legal magazine under the Freedom of Information Act, or prove that its initial search was done properly.

In its lawsuit over the records, Prison Legal News challenged the Bureau’s handling of its 2003 FOIA request. The non-profit magazine initially sought records of lawsuits and claims filed against the Bureau from 1996 to 2003, and requested a processing fee waiver typically granted to the news media, according to the court opinion. The Bureau and the Department of Justice denied the fee waiver request, according to court documents, and in 2005 the magazine filed suit over that denial in federal court in Washington.

The next year, the federal court ruled that the Bureau was to perform the records search without charging the magazine. But once the Bureau released some information to Prison Legal News, the publication questioned whether the Bureau had properly complied more generally with FOIA.

The Bureau argued that it had provided the plaintiff with more than 10,000 pages of relevant records after searching multiple offices, and said any withheld or redacted information was protected under FOIA exemptions.

But the court found that the Bureau had not met its burden in “demonstrating that its search for records was adequate.” The Bureau must now either conduct a new records search, the court said, or submit an affidavit declaring that its search was in fact proper.

The Bureau’s “continued failure” to produce public records “is in direct conflict with a recent memo issued by the U.S. Attorney General‘s office which directed federal agencies to apply a ‘presumption of openness’ when responding to FOIA requests,” said Prison Legal News editor Paul Wright in a press release.
