Mua ha ha ha ha ha! My brother and I really wanted to watch 2012 yesterday and so at close to 2pm we decided to head out and give it a shot. I knew that it’d be difficult as my colleagues had already told me that they couldn’t get tickets last Friday but I figured that it’d be nice to spend some time with my brother even if we didn’t get to watch the movie. Oh! We did I mention we sorta dragged my brother’s girlfriend along as well? And so the 3 of us began our 2012 adventure that’d take us through the whole of Saturday afternoon and night.

First stop: Berjaya Times Square
We parked at Starhill to save on parking and walked all the way to Berjaya Times Square (good exercise!) even though it looked like it’d rain (thankfully it didn’t). We hit BTS at around 2-something and headed straight for the cinema. After lining up for almost half-an-hour we discovered that tickets were sold out all the way till midnight! Gyaaaaah! Fine. There’d be no tickets to be found here so we had lunch at Marrybrown (which was just next door to the cinema) and just walked around; checking out the toy stores that litter the higher regions of Berjaya Times Square. I hit Borders & Video Ezy and almost made some purchases but my common sense kicked in and I didn’t buy anything in the end.

Second stop: Sg Wang Plaza
It was rainy yesterday so we stopped by here anyways and I stopped by some of the video game stores there to check on Bioware’s latest RPG epic “Dragon Age: Origins”. I didn’t look around too much and one of the shops offered me a copy for RM170. I gave my regular game store a call and found that I could get it at a similar price so didn’t see the point of buying the game at Sg Wang cos’ I wouldn’t have saved on anything anyways. We left Sg Wang Plaza empty handed on purchases but we did manage to treat ourselves to some durian ice-cream and keropok so going there wasn’t a total bust. Keh keh.

Third stop: Galaxy Ampang
After spending a full day in the Bukit Bintang area we were still undeterred and so we headed in the rain to Galaxy Ampang to give 2012 one more go! MBO cinemas are usually empty and even though they’re not that great, a cinema’s a cinema so we figured we’d have a good chance here. We got there at close to 7.30pm and lo and behold tickets were pretty much sold out too! The only available shows were for 11.30pm and midnite. We were super tired and hungry by that time.

Final stop: Jang Su Chon Korean BBQ Restaurant
Ah! This was definitely the highlight of the night. We got directions from Eric which were wrong but eventually found the place. Koreans frequent the place and the pricing was just nice. Our bill would have come up to just RM50++ if I hadn’t forgotten that Korean places always came with servings of vegetables, kim chi and other assorted stuff. Needless to say, we were quite stuffed last night. But I suppose all that walking around the whole of the Bukit Bintang area would have compensated for the food we consumed last night.

Nekaj zapisov nazaj sem pisal o obisku letošnjega Beneškega bienala in o tem, kako me je navdušil nordijski paviljon. Zakaj? Koncept prikazuje hudo veliko in drzno moderno stanovanje očitno premožnega pisca pornografskega čtiva, njegovo delovno mizo oz. kotiček z vsemi pripomočki in, glej ga zlomka, s pisalnim strojem – kje je že to? Vendar tip, če sem si sceno prav interpretiral, leži zunaj mrtev v svojem bazenu. Zakaj je umrl? Lahko le špekuliram, ker je v bazenu oblečen, ima pa vzorno sezute in na rob bazena postavljene čevlje. Morda samomor? Osamljenost? Umor? Ga je zastrupila ljubica, nemara konkurenca? Kdo ve. In še je tega. Vsekakor postavitev, polna zgodbe in ideje, tudi izveda ne šepa.

The article “State DMV introduces new N.Y. license plate” explains how April 1 the state will require us to buy a new license plate or we will have to pay to keep our old ones.

The state should not make it mandatory for new license plates to be bought and manufactured. The online petition I feel is going to do nothing. The people should really fight this. The state is gouging us through mandatory products to purchase and i feel its something the people could really turn over. The state is planning on increasing driver’s license and registration 25 percent and it’s not going to stop there. The price always goes up, and it’ll never stop. The state will make $137 million dollars out of our pockets on worthless product for our vehicles.

There is no point to mass produce license plates for our vehicles that already have license plates. If the new registered vehicles obtain them, that’s acceptable, with no price increase of course, but we shouldn’t have to pay for anything. The state is just looking for another way to get money out of us and quite frankly I’m sick of it. New York State already has extremely high taxes and we don’t need more costs.

Assemblyman Steven Hawley was completely correct, “We do not need new license plates”. He brings up valid points and I’m glad he is addressing the situation and not passing it off. Hopefully it will be an option to have the license plate.

Club: Rondeau Pavilion

Location: Rondeau Park Ontario
What: Hottest dance club around for decades.

Note: People would drive from a hundred mile radius to party at the Pavilion, and there is no way I could do the Chatham Music Archive without mentioning this place and what I have been told about it. Nothing was like it for miles and miles and the kids would do anything to make it every night.

• The club drew 1,500 on average every Saturday night
• People came from Sarnia, Windsor, Detroit, London and everywhere in between
• Ages 12 – 20 were the scene for the infamous dances held
• The rules were strict but were respected and followed by patrons
• Bands included The pharaohs, The Fiends, Sally and the Bluesman, The American Breed, MC5(in 1969)
• Bob Seger and Alice Cooper played there regularly as struggling musicians before becoming famous
• The Hops (DJ’s spinning what the kids wanted to hear) were the high lights for the kids
• Popular Dj’s for the years the Pavilion were most packed were Bill Saunders and Paul Dustin
• Bill Saunders became the DJ in 1964
• The place is also memorable for its closing song “The Sand and the Sea”
• Girls waited against the wall for a guy to ask them to dance, that was the era
• The guys constantly walked clock wise around the hall
• Mr. Smyth sold Rondeau Pavilion in 1975, attendance was dropping as policies changed to the park
• The pavilion was the third and last dance hall at Rondeau
• Rondeau is Ontario’s second oldest provincial park, which was established in 1899, a year after Algonquin Provincial Park.

We’re getting ready to hit the road for Fresh Air live- 4 special live shows as part of FRESH AIR.  The first stop is the Pavilion in Cork tomorrow night (Sun 15th) where special guest Spilly Walker joins artist-in-residence Katie Kim. The show will be presented by Donal Dineen who will also provide live visuals throughout, and spin tunes after the gig in to the small hours.

Both artist did Fresh Air radio shows this week: Katie Kim on Mon 9th and Spilly Walker on Tue 10th on Today FM.

Katie Kim’s music has been alternately described as perfect swellings, sedated, distorted chaos and sculpted slow burns; words which only go some way to describing the music that bleeds from Katie Kim. Formerly a member of the Galaxy 500-esque, dreampop outfit Dae-Kim she left the band in early 2008 to start recording the songs she had been writing over the past 5 years, until a computer mishap wiped over 50 of her finished works. A collection of new songs, born from the mourning of this loss, butterflied into Twelve; her critically acclaimed debut album.

Twelve has generated an overwhelming response, with many calling it the great hidden albums of 2008.  Initially released on limited edition vinyl it was re-released on CD in early 2009 and has quickly fallen into the favourite lists of anyone that owns a copy.

First emerging in 2007 on the Donal Dineen curated Foggy Notions compilation; ’Small Hours Summer Mornings, Spilly Walker’s Let the Freak Come Out at Night married pop-craft with electro’s intensity. Although a departure from his back-catalogue, the voice was unmistakably that of David Kitt. His accomplice is younger brother Robbie Kitt, and that first track was followed by a memorable performance in the Foggy Notions tent at Electric Picnic in 2008, where they mashed-up synths, old skool house-style motifs and emotive choruses into a forty-minute rush of disco soul. Expect disco, soul, electro and lush beats underpinning Spilly’s distinctive vocal stylings. The debut album is near completion and should see a release early next year.
