Went to Times Book store get a friend some stuff. Ate at a sushi restaurant. 2 appetizer , 2 main course, a Japanese Tea and a bottle of Ribena cost us 53bucks. Not a big fan of japanese food so in my opinion food was yucky..service was good. Price was kinda steep.

Hier soir la chaîne de télévision “13éme rue” organisée une soirée au pavillon Cambon, rue Cambon à Paris.

Début des festivités à 22H13… En réalité la soirée a commencé à 20h10 avec la mise en scène d’un spectaculaire braquage de banque avec intervention des équipes du GIGN pour intercepter et neutraliser les ravisseurs qui tentaient d’ouvrir le coffre fort de la banque. Du beau spectacle !!! Pour info, le pavillon Cambon Capucine était une banque avant de devenir un espace Potel & Chabot.

Ensuite, au sous-sol de ce lieu, les invités ont pu s’essayer aux tirs à l’arme à feu avec un stand prévu à cet effet.

Etaient présents : Karl ZERO et Daisy D’ERRATA; Igor BOGDANOFF, Zinedine SOUALEM avec Julie NICOLET et d’autres encore…

Belle soirée dans un lieu splendide.

Le garage désigne étymologiquement l’action de ranger un véhicule dans une gare. L’expression “voie de garage” lui rend hommage : elle est la métaphore d’une situation condamnant à l’immobilité.

Dès lors, comment expliquer les mythologies créatives – très américaines – gravitant autour des garages ?

Historiquement, le garage nous raconte l’histoire de l’urbanisation du 20e siècle et de la société de consommation : l’american way of life fait rentrer dans la légende le pavillon de banlieue, synonyme d’indépendance, de jardin, de confort, de propriété.

Ce mode d’habitation s’est développé parallèlement à la démocratisation de l’automobile (THE transport individualisé). Parce que la nouvelle bourgeoisie habite dans les suburbs (en distinction des centre-villes populaires) grâce à l’auto, elle doit de doter d’un lieu où la ranger. Initialement indépendant de la maison, le garage va progressivement se coller à l’habitation afin de symboliser le lien qui unit les gens à leur voiture.

Au fur et à mesure, on intègre le garage aux maisons. On ajoute une pièce au-dessus du garage. On la loue pour rembourser son crédit, on l’utilise comme grenier où on la prête aux enfants pour les familiariser à l’indépendance.

Le garage devient un lieu à part, une alternative entre le foyer parental et le monde extérieur, une annexe de l’autorité : le sanctuaire de la voiture, outil d’ouverture sur le monde extérieur.

Pas étonnant dès lors que le garage soit autant lié au changement, à la transformation, il est le catalyseur entre l’ordre et le progrès. D’où le nombre fou de mythologies – savamment storytellées – de créations d’entreprises révolutionnaires ayant vu le jour dans un garage : informatique (Apple, Microsoft, HP…), ingéniérie…

Le garage, c’est la déclinaison moderne de l’atelier ou de la dépendance au fond du jardin où tout se créé, façon Géo Trouvetou, Léonard ou Oncles fameux bricoleurs :

Sans avoir jamais rien appris c’était un vrai génie

Il s’enfermait toute la journée au fond de son atelier

On croise également le mythe du garage au cinéma : Doc de Retour vers le futur y invente sa machine, Kevin Spacey dans American Beauty s’y reforge une nouvelle jeunesse et découvre l’homosexualité…

Le garage, c’est un lieu de transgression : on y fait les premières boums (cf. Sophie Marceau ou Franck Dubosc), on y fait les sottises propres à l’adolescence, on y hurle des refrains pré-punks… Un style musical baptisé Garage Rock, caractérisé par un son sale, enregistré en amateur.

Ce style d’enregistrement subsiste encore de nos jours : le logiciel Garage Band symbolise à lui seul les premiers enregistrements maison.

En bref, le garage témoigne de l’évolution de la société et des cultures adolescentes, il cristallise les alternatives et les idéaux jeunes, il est le lieu de transit vers le monde extérieur…

 Wir erwarteten gestern Besuch von Bekannten und schon Tage vorher wurde überlegt: Was sollen wir den Gästen zum Essen vorsetzen? Da wir dieses Jahr erst  dreimal gegrillt haben, beschlossen wir: Sonnabend ist die Gelegenheit das vierte Mal in Angriff zu nehmen. Opossum baute glücklicherweise in einer geschützten Ecke des Gartens ein Pavillon auf und  bereitete alles für den Abend vor.  Tische, Stühle und Grill wurden mit Hilfe von Alpha aufgestellt, und wir warteten auf den Besuch. Zehn Minuten vor Ankunft der Gäste bezog sich der Himmel, und es fing natürlich an zu regnen. Als unsere Bekannten kamen, schien wieder die Sonne und wir konnten mit dem grillen beginnen. Wie konnte es anders sein, nach kurzer Zeit schüttete es wie aus Eimern und dann hagelte es auch noch. Komischerweise haben wir fast immer Pech mit dem Wetter, wenn der Grill bei uns angeschmissen wird. Für uns schon eine normale Situation. Grill unter den Überbau, wir unter dem Pavillon, was soll es. Da es sich nach dem Regen sehr abkühlte, sind wir anschließend ins Haus gegangen und haben noch einen schönen abend gehabt.

Xa estaba autorizado o pavillón, xa tiña unha partida orzamentaria asignada, é dicir, xa había uns cartos que eran para isto, e xa había planos provisionais e todo. Pero agora chegou o novo conselleiro e estimou que se van destinar eses cartos a cousas pequenas que sexan máis importantes. Se cadra non consideran importante que os nosos fillos e fillas estean comendo de prestado nunha casa que non é comedor nin é nada, ou que teñan que andar cruzando a rúa para ir comer, chova ou vente, ou que non teñan nin unha mísera cancha de  baloncesto nin de futbito, nin unhas duchas axeitadas.

Deamoslles as grazas, porque seguramente estamos pedindo de máis e nos están educando… unha petición que se remonta a cando estudaban eiquí moitos pais e nais dos que agora van ás clases.

Seguramente debe ser moito máis importante gastar 300.000 euros (trescentos mil) nunhas enquisas trampa sobre o uso do galego…e que non valeron para nada…. co que se gastou aí, xa se pagaba a planta baixa do pavillón. ¡ISO SI QUE ERA URXENTE!

During the war (1941-1945) the creation of 17 million new jobs finally pulls the economy out of the Depression. Millions of married women enter the labor force. The demand for restaurant meals escalates, increasing from a pre-war level of 20 million meals served per day to over 60 million. The combination of increased restaurant patronage with labor shortages, government-ordered price freezes, and rationing of basic foods puts restaurants in a squeeze. With gasoline rationing, many roadside cafes and hamburger stands close.

For a time after the war, rationing continues and wholesale prices stay high but patronage falls off as women leave jobs and return to the kitchen. Trained restaurant personnel are in short supply. Restaurants take advantage of food service methods and materials developed for the armed services. The frozen food industry supplies restaurants with fish, French fries, and baked goods. Boil-in bags of pre-cooked entrees become available. Fast food assembly lines and serving techniques used by the military are transferred to commercial establishments.

Highlights

1940 Based on how many restaurant tablecloths have numbers scribbled on them, executives of the National Restaurant Association reason that mealtime deals are being made and that business is finally bouncing back from the Great Depression.

1941 When the restaurant in the French pavilion at the New York World’s Fair closes, its head Henri Soulé decides he will not return to a Paris occupied by Germans. He and ten waiters remain in New York and open Le Pavillon. Columnist Lucius Beebe declares its cuisine “absolutely faultless,” with prices “of positively Cartier proportions.” – Chicago cafeteria operator Dario Toffenetti, who also had a successful run at the Fair, decides to open a cafeteria in Times Square.

1942 According an official of the National Restaurant Association, nearly one tenth of the 1,183,073 employees and proprietors in the U.S. restaurant business are in California.

1943 Decreeing that patrons will not need to turn in ration coupons for restaurant meals, Washington makes a fateful decision that will fill restaurants to the bursting point. In Chicago, restaurants in the “Loop” experience nearly a 25% increase over the year before, while in New York City patronage doubles and earlier seatings must be devised.

1943 Food imports cease and Chinese restaurants cannot get bamboo shoots. They substitute snow peas, now grown in California and Florida. Because of restrictions, restaurants of all kinds leave cakes unfrosted and substitute honey and molasses for sugar. Instead of beef, lamb, and pork, vegetable plates, fish, omelets, spaghetti, and salad bowls fill menus.

1944 In Reno, Nevada, the White House offers a menu with many fish, seafood, and poultry selections, including lobster, crab legs, frog legs, oysters, fried prawns, brook trout, guinea hen, squab, pheasant, sweetbreads, turkey, duckling, and chicken a la king.

1946 Like health departments all across the country, NYC begins a crack down on unsanitary conditions in restaurants, a problem that worsened with skeleton crews and extended mealtimes during wartime. An official says that of five inspections he witnessed only a Schrafft’s (shown here: Schrafft’s at Rockefeller Center) could be pronounced “sanitary and clean.”

1947 The Raytheon Corporation, maker of radar systems and components for the military, teams with General Electric to introduce the first microwave oven, the Radarange. Not available for home use initially, it is rented to hotels and restaurants for $5 a day.

1947 After numerous Afro-Americans are refused service in Bullocks department store tea room in Los Angeles, a group sponsored by C.O.R.E. stages a sit-in. Later a supportive white veteran publishes a letter to the editor of a paper declaring that since black soldiers regarded it as their duty to protect him from the “enemy abroad” during wartime, he now feels it is his duty “to protect them from the enemy at home.”

1948 An advice column tells girls to let their date handle all restaurant transactions, including complaints or questions about overcharges. “The girl does not intrude or ask, later, who won the argument,” advises the columnist. – In Chicago, a year-long trade school program in professional cooking enrolls veterans to help relieve the city’s acute chef shortage.

1949 Howard Johnson’s, the country’s largest restaurant chain, reports a record volume of business for the year. HoJos, which has not yet spread farther west than Fort Wayne IN, plans a move into California.

Last week’s intervention led to a miraculous admission to Pavillon Treatment Center in western NC. The experience was an important reminder that patience and respect are the keys to creating an environment that can lead to willingness to engage in treatment. Let me explain.

Early in my years of substance abuse counseling, I was exposed to counselors who, along their own journies from addiction to recovery, had experienced hardnosed counselors who stripped away defenses and dignity. I came to believe that, if these methods were the “stuff” of good substance abuse counselors, then I should leave the field because I wouldn’t be a very good one. I believed then (as I believe now) that people need to experience an attitude of respect from those who seek to help them if they are to be open and willing to hear. I believed then (as I believe now) that I do not have the right to strip away their dignity, even if it’s with the intention of helping. Years later, working with folks from Hazelden, I learned that my instincts are good and that I can help without stripping away dignity and respect from those I seek to serve.

Denial is a powerful thing. Despite all his weird ideas about penis envy and Oedipal complexes, Freud was really the one who helped us appreciate the defensive structure of the psyche. That structure is in place to protect us. When that structure is hard at work denying, intellectualizing, rationalizing, justifying and the like, it is hard for people to see the truth about how alcohol or drugs are affecting their lives.  My good friend and mentor, Eugene Robinson, used to tell me that “people can’t deny what they really don’t know.” Often it is true that alcoholics and addicts really DON’T know ~ even if it seems so obvious to everyone else.

Last week, I led a family through the process of structured family intervention. They had been terrified to confront the alcoholic they loved, but they were more terrified to stand back and let her continue to self-destruct. Their love for her and desire for her to get help were so evident, but their doubt about her willingness to consider treatment was also very strong. This is not unusual. Families have squared off against the person in denial for so long that they do not believe that the person would even consider getting help. They believe that intervening may drive the last wedge in between themselves and the person they love. They sometimes get scared and decide to continue suffering rather than to take action. But that doesn’t mean that their fear goes away.

Debra Jay, in her book No More Letting Go: The Spirituality of Taking Action Against Addiction, points out that:

When we’re living in a closed system of addiction, fear has nowhere to go…living with addiction is like living with a tiger. One eye is always on the tiger, even when it’s asleep in the corner. We can never stop thinking about it for long – hypervigilence being our best defense. We make sure it’s content, and when it isn’t, we quickly placate it or move out of the way. We know the tiger’s potential; it can turn on us at any moment…. How do we overcome pervasive, sometimes unnoticed fear? We begin by working with other people. When we try to manage the alcoholic one-on-one, we’re defeated by the addiction before we begin…Addiction is challenged successfully when a team of people unites and arms itself with knowledge. However, even building a team can overwhelm us with fear. It’s helpful to know that we need fear; fear gives us a sense of urgency and motivates us to act. …We ought to fear the DISEASE and the continuing consequences it brings to those we love. We ought NOT to fear confronting the disease, taking constructive action with other family members and friends to begin the treatment process. …Intervention can help reduce fear and give us strength to proceed.

Indeed, the intervention planning process brings up fear and some walk away without proceeding with the intervention. They are scared of confronting the person and overwhelmed by doubt that the person can accept help, and instead of taking action, they back away leaving the disease in control.

I have great admiration for the family I worked with last week. They pushed through their fear out of love, hung tight in response to several refusals to accept help, and remained calm, respectful and hopeful. Their actions allowed me the time to connect with and engage the person they love, and eventually she agreed to go to treatment. Treatment is just the beginning, but without beginning a new journey, the old journey just continues down the same treacherous path.

For me, perhaps the greatest triumph was the 2 responses I hope for with each intervention. “Yes, I have felt respected today, and I have felt like you allowed me to have dignity in making a choice about treatment. And yes, I will go with you to the treatment center today.”

And a new journey began.
